Chevrolet Silverado owners have reported 17 problems related to axle assembly (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact's husband heard a noise in the vehicle. She thought it was the brakes because it sounded like metal to metal. When the vehicle was checked at the dealership one could pull the tire out because the pin that held the axle had dropped down into the differential unit. This could have caused a serious accident. The contact purchased an extended warranty. The driver side was replaced under warranty but the extended warranty company would not agree to replace the passenger side even under the warranty.

The locking rear axle on my Chevrolet Silverado 2500hd does not release when entering a turn or intersection from a stop, causing the vehicle to continue forward and fight steering in the proper direction. I have had several near head on collisions with opposing traffic upon finally completing the turn. Chevrolet inspected the rear axle and installed a lubricant additive at approximately 10000 miles but the problem still exists. I have spoken with other owners of the same make, model, and year vehicle who have similar problems.

2004 chevy Silverado 2500 diesel, four months old(4000miles) rear axile went out. Said default from the manufactor. Took fourteen days to get new one. Chevrolet built new from st. Louis and shipped it to be put on. They gave me a little car to drive. 27000 miles and now rear axile leaking. Took to dealer. They said nothing but normal leakage coming out. ( whats normal leakage on a axile? they are not suposed to leak on the brakes. ) looked like it was on fire smoking so bad and could smell axile grease. Seen some on tires. But this is normal leakage. Was told to drive it till it brakes down. Also everthing in the dash stops working then it will just come back on.
At 30 mph in 4 wheel drive, on a snowpacked road, something in the front differential broke and caused the front end to lock up. This sent the vehicle into an uncontrollabe slide into the ditch. Fortunately there were no obstacles to collide with. Vehicle would not operate in 4 wheel drive but would operate in 2 wheel drive. Had this happened at 50 mph on a mountain road, deaths would have occured. It is time that general motors deals with this problem.

Vehicle's rear end locks up when making turns. Took vehicle to dealer 6 times, replaced entire rear end. Vehicle was fine for 5 weeks, then vehicle locked up again. Consumer states there is a loud popping sound after starting off, dealer replaced differential case, bearings, and axle seals, problem still occurs.
Rear end locking up, and causing internal damage. Manufacturer notified, and informed consumer that vehicle was not covered under manufacturer's recall. Please feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
I have had my truck which I purchased used in March 2000, with 13,000 miles on it into the dealer numerous times to identify and correct a problem with the rear end making a clunking sound upon shifting and starting from a coasting position. The first time I was told they could not find a problem, the second time I had the service manager ride with me and he heard the problem, they performed maintenance as delineated in a service bulletin covering changing the oil in the rear end. This did not correct the problem, the problem has gotten significantly worse in the last 6,000 miles. I had another gm mechanic look at the problem and he indicated that the rear end was not properly set up at the point of manufacture and to go back to the dealer and tell them. The third time I had the truck in for this problem, once again I had the manager ride we me and hear the noise again and again. They looked it over, and not wanting to tear into the rear end discounted the problem and inherrent to this vehicle and described the problem as differential torque slap. I am quite concerned about this noise, and the issue of warranty coverage. I dont like having to go back time and time again to resolve a problem and told there is none. I bought the truck to drive not sit in the service bay.
On Jan. 17,2000 we were driving through norman,it was foggy, and we hit a slick spot. I over corrected and the truck spun. We hit the crub with the left rear tire and jumped the crub. It looked to be flat but when we tried to pull the truck off the crub and straighten out to put the spare wheel on it would not move or turn. We had it towed to a repair shop who looked at the damage and fixed it. We filed with the insurance because we thought it wasn't covered under warranty. We were told later that the axle should not have bent like it did to begin with. ( dot number: tire size: p235/75r16 ).
2002 Chevrolet Silverado brake equipment. The consumer had to replace the ear rotors, shoes and hardware. The rear axle fluid was low and discolored. When the rear axle was serviced it was determined that the front axle vent tube was leaking from the oring. The axle vent tube was replaced.
This is an intermittent problem that occurs unexpectedly. When brake is applied pedal goes to the floor, resulting in no braking power. Dealer cannot duplicate the problem. The customer is concerned about safety, since the problem could reoccur anytime in the future. Customer had problems with the transmission and rear gears on rear axle.
2 front axles failed within 90 days while driving at approximately 70 mph, and in traffic which could have caused crash.
