4 Transfer Case problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/19/2014

Since I purchased this vehicle is has had a vibration from 5-20, 40-50, and 68-78. It has been in the service department 4 times for this problem alone with no resolution. General motors understands their is an issue with this model truck but does not have a solution. The vibration is felt in the seat, the gas pedal, the steering wheel and the rest of the truck. Tires were indexed, rotated, and balanced, along with the drive line specifications inspected and were found within normal limits even thought vibration persists. Other issues I have had were the exhaust squeaking noises when transferring from v8/v4 mode, in which the entire exhaust system was replaced, water leaking from the sunroof and windshield, frame coating peeling off causing the frame to rust, the seat frame shifting, moving and clicking when turning the vehicle, hd radio loses signal intermittently, radio and hvac knobs were not lit, headlights were misaligned from the factory, and 4 other recalls such as, overheated exhaust components, unwanted transfer case shift to neutral, peek in odometer display incorrect, and transmission oil cooler connections possibly being bad. This vehicle currently has 6500 miles and has been in the service department a total of 30 days so far.

5 Transfer Case problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/02/2012

My truck at speeds around 35mph while letting off the accelerator it would jump out of gear. So then, in 2012, I had the transfer case actuator motor replaced and it fixed the problem. Then just yesterday (oct. 31, 2014) I had cruise control set at 70mph and when it would coast or try to slow itslef down to maintain its speed, I would here a clunking noise and it would jerk. When I let off the cruise control and would let it roll to a stop it would pop out of gear! I made it back to town and even at slower speeds it would jump out of gear to the point where I had to put it in 4wd high to be able to move. I spoke with a mechanic at the local dealership and he said they have a lot of problems with them like mine which is why I think there needs to be some attention brought to them.

6 Transfer Case problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

The 4 wheel drive buttons fail to work every so often. I was coming home from ann arbor, mi. One night and my indicator light said I was in neutral for some reason. I played with it for a bit and no luck. My friend was with me and he owns a repair facility in south lyon, mi. He knew what was wrong! the encoder motor for the transfer case is bad. It is an electric item and fails. The encoder motor is what shifts in to 4 hi, 4 low, auto 4 wheel and 2 hi. This happened again toward the end of Feb 2010 when my truck would not shift at all, 2 hi was my only option. Another friend of mine has a 2004 Silverado and her encoder motor went bad on the freeway. Her problem was that her truck threw her into 4 low while she was at 70 mph. Omg is that safe???? gm needs to do something before people start to crash or worse getting hurt and dyeing as a result.

8 Transfer Case problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/12/2005

Failure of the 4 x 4 control module and automatic transmission shift motor. While driving the transfer case shifted into neutral, pressing the 2hi button caused the transfer case to lock up. The truck was shut off while driving on the freeway and was dead steered to the shoulder. Complete replacement of both module and motor replaced $1972. 00 dollars, truck only had 58,237 mi.

9 Transfer Case problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/20/2005

Since purchased from maher Chevrolet in 2001, the "c clip" in the "transfer case" has broken three times and we have never used the 4 wheel drive. This occurs during normal driving! the first time was within months after owning the vehicle. The second time was 30,000 miles after it replaced. Now less than 20,000 miles later, its broke again. There must be something defective internally in the transfer case. When driving and the "c clip" breaks, the gears start grinding loudly. You can not exceed 3 - 5 miles per hour. Since this is an instant movement, this can cause an accident wehn travling on the interstate. Which my husband frequently does while driving to work. The warranty has expired on the vehicle and I don't understand why this problem has not been fixed since it was brought back to the dealer on two occasions and supposedly, fixed then. Is the dealership the problem or am I dealing with unsafe defect with the transfer case. I will list the approx. Date that the dealership looked at my truck last, and then wanted to charge me over $2,500 to "investigate" why the "c clip" keeps breaking.

10 Transfer Case problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/02/2005

I noticed that the transfer case was leaking fliud. The truck was going in for a recall in the steerinng pump. So I asked the dealer to check where the leak was coming from. The dealer called me and told me that the transfer case had a small hole in it and it would be $1,200. 00 to fix it. I brought the truck home and looked at the transfer case myself. The transfer case did have a small hole in it. I was going to put some jb weld on the hole for the time being. Until I could afford to have the transfer case fixed. When I touched the hole with my finger I noticed that the transfer case had really weak medal in that area like when it was made it was not made right. I have been talking to gm about the problem they are tring to decide if the transfer case failure is there fault or if the truck has been beat on. I have only used the 4wd one time in the last 9 months that I have owned the truck the people that had it before me took really good care of the truck. I am really upset that Chevrolet's do not last more then 5 years.

11 Transfer Case problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/09/2005

After an average cold night about 0 - 7* f, snow and ice were on the roads so the vehicle was parked in 4wd and left for the night, when I went to work the next day, the truck made a very loud growling noise from the front differential and trive train for about 20 - 30 miles. Turns out the front diif fluid is a standard 90w gear oil. The fluid froze causing damage to the transfer gears and locking up the right front axle cuasing the 4wd to not engage properly. Took to local dealer in kearney, mo and verified damage to gears and axle. Gm was contacted, and initially advised of no proplem repair. Dealer removed cover plate and found signifigant gear and axle damage, gm then replaced the whole front drivetrain assembly as it was under warranty.

12 Transfer Case problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/02/2005

Service f. W. D. Light comes on , dealer says nothing is wrong but the f. W. D. Dose not work sometimes. I am afraid that it will go into f. W. D. Low when I am driving at a moderate speed causing transmission problems and possible injury.

13 Transfer Case problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/10/2004

2001 Silverado. . . . . My only problem with my truck is the service 4wd light. The problem is the electronic transfer case shift motor. The part runs a little over $100. I can't afford the part right now, but it doesn't affect my daily driving, just when I need 4x4 which isn't often living in oklahoma. Still runs and drives like a brand new truck.

20 Transfer Case problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/29/2004

On the advice of council, I have been instructed to outline and document to general motors corp. Details concerning a vehicle incident that took place on January 29, 2004, approximately 7:45 pm, while driving our 2003 chevy Silverado 2500hd (VIN#1gchk29u03e369348) my wife and I were driving on s. R. 224 east of findlay at 40mph when without warning, the entire front end locked up on the vehicle (later duplicated by the service technician at lariche Chevrolet in findlay, ohio) throwing my wife and I violently against our restraints. This resulted in a total loss of control and inability to move the vehicle from oncoming traffic. We were stranded in the middle of a road that is frequented by semi trailers and vehicles traveling in the 55-60mph range, and were completely unable to get the vehicle to move. The vehicle would not go forward or backward. After pushing the 2wd/4wd buttons frantically on the dash and shifting from park to reverse to drive, the vehicle finally moved in reverse (2wd). I then shifted to drive and was able to pull into a nearby driveway. After testing the vehicle up and down the driveway, we proceeded to get off the main road and went directly home (approximately 0. 5 miles). The vehicle was towed to lariche Chevrolet the following morning. (complete background of service work in memo page) as you can see this was a terrifying experience for both of us, leaving my wife unwilling to travel in this vehicle. Fortunately, our problem was duplicated by a technician at lariche Chevrolet who in the manager's words your truck about put my service tech through the windshield". Because we are afraid to ride in this vehicle, we are asking to have Chevrolet exchange this vehicle with another equivalent model. This was our second Chevrolet in 2 years, so we are happy with the brand, just not this truck. Please advise us of your decision.

21 Transfer Case problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/29/2004

Service four wheel drive light comes on. This truck has been to the dealership three times to have the sensor replaced. No apparent cause and no fix for it.

22 Transfer Case problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/04/2004

Service 4 wd light comes on while towing trailer. I've taken the vehicle to 3 different dealerships 4 different times and always find something new creating the problem. Per bbb order Chevrolet was to have another opportunity to fix vehicle and Chevrolet rep. Insisted that he would personally have a allison transmission guru personally review my vehicle. Well they changes some sort of part within the drivetrain and the guru never showed up. To this day the 4 wd light continues to come on and they seem to just call it a "minor flaw" and I have driven the vehicle to much! I purchased the truck just about a year and a half ago and it has 48000 miles. I guess I'm just not allowed to drive the truck that much. I'm just lost since they say the lemon law is good for 18000 miles only and I'm stuck with the truck. Please help with some info!!!.

24 Transfer Case problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/29/2003

The vehicle was unable to engage 4 - wheel drive. The dealer stated that the front axle actuator failed.

25 Transfer Case problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/04/2003

On one occasion the viehicle shifted into towing mode by itself, without any reason, (no buttons pressed). Yesterday, the truck shifted into 4wd - low range at highway speed by itself without any reason. This caused the front wheels to temporarily screech and the engine to over-rev. I stopped the truck on the side of the road, turned it off and then the 4wd control panel was inoperative and the service 4wd indicator was on. I took the truck to my local dealer, they told me they didn't have time to diagnose the problem right then, but not to worry because the error code would be stored and they could retrieve it after lunch. I took it back after lunch, and no error code. This is the third time I've had the truck in on 4wd problems, but the first time that the problems have presented a real danger. I had the truck in five times with transmission problems without a fix.

26 Transfer Case problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/15/2003

1999 gm Silverado 71,000 miles. New ventura 246 transfers case has developed a hole. The hole caused the loss of transfer case fluid under vehicle. Dealer and gm customer service content that is not there problem or fault and will not repair under defect of material or manufacturing. Dealer has also noted with gm customer service that the hole was a "puncture" indicating abuse. Local transmission shop (goodale transmissions. Columbus ohio) indicate that this is a common problem with this transfer case. The holes are caused by a retaining spring (used to hold an internal pump? per service shop) break and rub on the inside of the case. Safety issues cased by this failure are possible fire when fluid is deposited on the exhaust system. Loss of rear brakes due to contamination by transfer case fluid. Possible loss of vehicle control if transfer case freezes due to lack of fluid. Repair cost for $900 to $3000 plus.

27 Transfer Case problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/14/2003

At 6,130 miles the message "check 4x4" was displayed. At the same time, the 4x4 control buttons went inoperable. The 4x4 system was completely disable and inoperable. Onstar confirmed vehicle required service. Redwood city boardwalk found "mode switch shorted, replaced mode switch" and the problem was corrected. Dealer replaced switch module with different color (gray) module than was provided with the truck new (black), gray does not match dashboard.

28 Transfer Case problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/20/2003

Service 4wd indicator message light on, but when scanned no codes are present. 4wd functions in all ranges and once ignition is turned off and restarted message is cleared. It will come on again in approximately 5 minutes, and sometimes a it will pass before it goes on again.

29 Transfer Case problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/05/2003

I have 2001 Chevrolet 2500 hd 4x4 crew cab short box, with a 5 speed allison automatic with push button 4 wheel drive on the dash. At 117,000 miles my transfer case went out leaving me stranded luckily only 30 miles from home. Now at 279,000 miles my transfer case goes out again this time leaving me stranded on the wv turnpike. I realize the vechile has high miles on it mostly from towing campers and mostly all highway miles. The total 4 wheel drive miles can't be over 200 miles. I have a friend in indiana who has a 3500 with about 175,000 miles on his and he just replaced transfer case this past week. My question is are we the only two to have transfer case problems? no where can I find any bulletins or anything relating to gm on transfer case problems. Maybe you could let me know if there are any.

30 Transfer Case problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/17/2003

While driving, the vehicle shifted into 4 wheel drive high without warning. For the third time the sensor motor had to be replaced by the service dealer.

31 Transfer Case problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/15/2003

4wd drive is inop. The transfer case automatically switched to 4 lo on the move. The truck has been in 5 times for the same problem. The dealer and gm says there is no fix at this time, time frame for fix is unknown. Dealer says it can not replace encoder because gm will not allow parts to be installed because it will not fix the problem. This truck has less than 2500 miles on it.

32 Transfer Case problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/01/2003

Transmission transfer case has a crack. Leaking transmission fluid.

33 Transfer Case problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/01/2003

4 wheel drive system does not work and gm has no fix for it. Truck has been inoperable since I bought it. This means that it was broken at the factory.

34 Transfer Case problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/21/2003

2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd 4 wheel drive. The truck makes a loud banging noise when shifting into 4 wheel drive (on the fly). This happens almost every time when going into 4 wheel drive.

35 Transfer Case problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/09/2003

The transfer case on my 2003 Silverado 3500, on its own, switches from 2 wheel drive to low range 4 wheel drive while at speed. The dealer advises that gm has no "fix" for this dangerous problem and, instead, has had me remove the fuse to the "on-the-fly" 4 wheel drive. This leaves me with a 2 wheel drive vehicle only. The problem is constant once it starts. At 35 to 45 mph, control is difficult when you are surprised by this drastic shift to low range 4x4. My brother and I bought two identicle vehicles in December 2002 and his is doing the same thing. Gm and the dealer have been of absolutely no assistance at all. The problem continues and has very serious potential.
