Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) Problems of Chevrolet Silverado

Chevrolet Silverado owners have reported 6 problems related to gas recirculation valve (egr valve) (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/26/2015

Winter of 2014, Silverado would engage it's stabilitrack control. When this happens it slows the speed at which the truck could go if it sensed the roads may be icy. The truck would move but very slowly and it felt as if you had no control over it. Even when braking it seemed to not want to brake. Dangerous if it felt to engage while on the road. We removed the fuse that was associated to the stabilitrack and for a moment worked. Then while searching on you tube, we found that a sensor was replaced on other trucks. We replaced the sensor and it stopped it. Truck has been good until this winter 2015-2016. Now the internal temperature of the truck has to be at least 33 degrees or higher in order for it to start in the mornings. Otherwise it is dead. I have to get rides to work, since I work in town, I am able to have someone drive me back home between 9am and 10am to come get my truck, cause by that time it usually is warm enough for it to start. Unless the whole day is going to be below 32 degrees, well then I am just shit out of luck! there are no recalls, but I know I can't be the only one who is having this problem. You tube shows many videos with these trucks and how after they do one thing, it works, then they have to do another and another. I think that gm needs to fix these issues for free. It should be a recall. I just can't be dishing out money whenever the truck decides it wants to not work, gm has to know exactly what is wrong, instead of just saying one thing and then another to get our money. We are already paying for the truck monthly, don't think gm is hurting for money. Gm do something about this!!!! I have always been a loyal Chevrolet consumer, my thoughts are changing.

2 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/27/2013

The contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the motor of the vehicle hesitated to accelerate intermittently without warning. In addition, the accelerator failed to respond to acceleration attempts. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the mechanic stated that the vehicle was equipped with a fuel integration system which allowed the vehicle to switch from v8 to v4 for better fuel mileage and that the problem was normal. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 500. The current mileage was 3,100.

3 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/30/2005

Truck has 14000 miles, it has constant over heating problems while towing my 8k travel trailer. I have talked with the Chevrolet dealer about it, they told me that they were aware of the problem but at this time have no fix. I call stupid because I heard online that the 06 models have revised cooling systems and a larger turbo charger. My belief is the fix is to much $$ and they will only take care of the few people that tow and have issues. I have notice a lot of information on the net about 04. 5 and 05 lly duramax truck that tow over 10000 have this issue but my travel trailer fully loaded only weighs under 9k. The major down side is the trucks inability to maintain the speed limit due to the overheating water temperature and the power loss formed a cooling fan that runs hyperspeeds no stop when towing. My towing has been done at low outside temperatures ranging for 75 to 85 degrees outside. This truck is not performing as advertised or supposed to be designed for.

4 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/05/2003

4. 3 liter v6 engine w/standard trans. - butterfly valve in engine air intake throttle body has shallow cup riveted to engine side (underside) of flat butterfly valve. This shallow metal cup is tearing loose, with outside edge bending downward and away from flat butterfly valve to approx. 30 degrees. The bend is at the riveted joints where the cup is anchored to the flat butterfly valve. The cup metal has two tears in the metal where rivets have held fast. Vehicle has 40,000 miles and is in good condition, driven on city streets only. Dealer says will fix free if Chevrolet service center gives ok, and Chevrolet service center says dealer must approve. Problem has potential for catastrophic engine damage and/or engine fire. Please help.

5 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/01/2001

Within a month after our purchase, I took our truck to tony Chevrolet's service dept. For an engine knock. I was told this noise is normal to "all" 2000 Chevrolet and GMC trucks with the 5. 3 liter engine. I asked how an engine knock can be normal to a brand new engine and was told that the noise was called "piston slap" which general motors is aware of this "defect" and was working on a fix. I then explained to the service writer, since I've worked as a mechanic, that I've never heard a new or rebuilt engine knock unless there was a mistake made or a faulty part installed. I've heard high mileage engines with a knock problem, and I've heard high mileage engines with "piston slap". After research I found out gm was going to replace the faulty pistons with gm's new design pistons and that would take care of the "pistion slap" issue. After talking with another dealership about this issue, I was told that gm has replaced a few engines with the new designed pistions which now still have the "piston slap". I was shown bulletin # 01-06-01-028 which stated models:1999-2002 Chevrolet/GMC pickup & utility models,2002 Cadillac escalade (2wd) with 4. 8l,5. 3l or 6. 0l engines may exhibit an engine knock noise that begins in the first 12,000-15,000 miles of use. The knock noise is most often noticed during start-up and typically disappears within the first 5-30 seconds (may last longer in extreme cold temperatures) since we live in alaska this is very true. The noise is usually more noticeable on the intial start-up when the tempture is below 50 degrees and may be more pronounced on the first start following a long trip. The noise "may" be caused by an interaction between carbon that has formed on the piston, the piston motion and the cylinder wall. At this time, attempts to repair this condition by replacing the engine assembly or pistons is not recommended. Our truck's performance has gone down due to the knock sensor detecting this particular problem.
