Chevrolet Silverado owners have reported 167 problems related to instrument panel (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The odometer and instrument panel in my 2004 chevy Silverado is not working, meaning that I can not tell how fast or slow I am driving. I was not sure if a safety recall has been issued to make gm repair this free of charge. The speedometer is stuck on 5mph and does not move the entire time I am driving.

I purchased a new 2005 Chevrolet Silverado worktruck in April of 2005. Approximately 6 weeks ago the speedometer started showing intermittent speeds not consistent with actual speed. Sometimes it would show zero mph when traveling at street or freeway speeds, sometimes showing less than or greater than perceived actual speeds, and currently for the last three days has stayed at zero regardless of any moving speed. The truck has 38,000 miles as shown by the odometer. I have not experienced/seen any problems with any other instruments as yet.

I have a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado with 85,000 miles. The oil pressure gauge on the instrument panel stopped working at 80,000 miles. Without the engine running the needle moves all the way to the maximum. I have herd from many Silverado owners that they have experienced the same problem with there vehicles. Why is there no recall with so many complaints?.

In my 2006 Chevrolet Silverado the speedometer turns off and on and gets stuck. I know for a fact that there are 4 other vehicles in our family that do the same thing. You will just be driving down the road and it either turns completely off or it goes up to 120mph or gets stuck were you were in speed. We have received two tickets because of this I would like to know what can be done about it? it is obviously a default if it is happening in all of our vehicles.

Speedometer had started to stick but now it doesn't work at all. . No matter how fast I may be going speedometer reads "0". Its been like this for a couple months but I haven't had the money to fix it. I've been using my gps system to gauge mph. Has this been addressed yet??.
Speedometer does not function properly. It will display 70 mph when standing still. It does not display the mph correctly. The needle will not re-zero after ignition is turned off.
First time we have taken the vehicle on a long trip. After 500 miles on the road, speedometer topped out at 120 mph (even though we had cruise set at 65). Even when we were at a complete stop, speedometer read 65 mph. After a couple of days it worked fine, week later when we were returning from the trip same thing occurred. We took it to the chevy dealer and they said it was a problem with the cluster and they ordered the part. We will take it in tomorrow to have the part replaced. Our vehicle only has 37,000 miles, we do have platinum warranty on it, but still will have to pay $200. 00 fee. Service tech says chevy has already had recall on 2002 and 2003, just wanted to report the problem is still there.
Erratic speedometer readings. Started with just reading a few miles over. Now 9 times out of 10 it says I'm doing 20 to 30mph when I start the truck. Checked online and many other people are having the same problem. How many does it take before a recall?.
Speedometer, is all over the place 20mph to 110mph, you never know how fast you are going without checking the rpms or a stop watch.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado. While driving approximately 60 mph, the speedometer displayed 20 mph. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer; however, a mechanic advised him to replace the instrument cluster. No repairs were made. The current and failure mileages were 58,800. Updated 02-25-08.
Broken odometer.

Speedometer pegs at 45mph and intermittently works.
Speedometer doesn't function properly. Registers at 70mph when standing still.
When coming to a full stop, speed less than 10 mph. Could not stop, and sounded like brake shoes needed replaced. After replacing shoes, still same sound. More work on brakes, no improvement still. Then talked to muffler brothers, franklin ohio. Also gas gage acting up.

The speedometer maulfunctions resulting in display of incorrect speed. Gm acknowledges the equipment failure and will not honor the recall.
We have a 2004 Silverado. On Friday, Dec. 21 the speedometer started to stick. When the vehicle is stopped it will go as low as 30 mph. When driving the speedo says about 110-120 mph. There is (without going and looking) about 38,300 miles on the truck. We bought this truck new in Feb. Of 2003. This is a huge safety issue.
04 Silverado with 46,000 miles, speedometer has malfunctioned. Sometimes will be pegged while stopped, sometimes will read 60 when stopped. I think gm should replace these obviously defective parts, plus pay for all tickets acquired in these defective vehicles. Obviously there is a "trend" here people(NHTSA),when I get my next new truck ($30,000-$40,000), I may be looking elsewhere. Truck is not fixed yet, but will be contacting the dealer tomorrow to hear "their sob story". Have never received a letter from anyone regarding this, but did acquire the vehicle new,off the lot.
Speedometer was fluttering and sticking since purchase of this vehicle, particularly in cold weather. Typically, after it warmed up, the speedometer would become somewhat functional again. Through discussions with gm dealership, it was discovered that a service bulletin and letters of notification have been sent out to warn owners of this problem. This web site shows complaints of this problem dating back to Dec of 2005. A 70,000 mile limit has been set for gm to cover repairs. My speedometer finally became totally inoperable at 105,000 miles, and I took it to the dealership for repairs. A month later, I see this notice. How can gm set a mileage limit on safety? this should be a total recall! at $500. To fix, most operators are obviously like me. You fix the things on your vehicle as you can afford to or if it makes the vehicle totally inoperable. I put over 20,000 miles a year on my truck. Like an above owner stated, why am I being penalized for driving more than 10k miles a year? why am I being penalized for using this truck on long hauls. It has been a great truck, and I have very few other complaints. However, gm knows that they put a defective and unsafe and faulty instrument cluster in these trucks. Now they want us, their consumers to pay for it? please NHTSA, this issue needs to be turned into a recall.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado. The instrument panel would intermittently malfunction. The gauges would drop while the vehicle was started. The dealer stated that the electronic control module needed to be reprogrammed. The manufacturer sent a letter stating that there was no recall; however, the warranty was extended to 70,000 miles for this failure. The failure mileage was 100,000 and current mileage was 102,000. Updated 01-10-08. Updated 12/31/07.
Speedometer is sometimes pinned at 120mph sometimes 60 mph when parked . Does not work at all. This is a known gm instrument panel cluster program & the truck is a 2004 under 4 years old but they won't do anything to pay for this known problem because I am over the mileage. Not my fault it broke after 70thousand miles . It has happened to many others earlier & they can get it fixed for free. If it was a defected panel it should be fixed regardless of the mileage for a truck under 4 years old.
Speedometer on my 2004 chevy Silverado is acting up. The needle is ticking like a clock as I accelerate and slow down. I have heard and read about many complaints about this same exact problem on this make, model, and year vehicle.
My 04 chevy Silverado ss has lost the gas gage and the rpm gage is sticking. The only gas gage that I have is the digital one. The rpm gage has started sticking. When the gas gage started sticking I talked to the chevy service department and they said a gas cleaner they sold would most likely fix the problem. We have done two treatments with no luck. Today is the first day the rpm gage is sticking. By the sounds of all the other similar complaints it will be stuck soon. How may people have to complain to get a obvious manufacture problem fixed?.
Speedometer is erratic, does not reset to zero when stopped.
Speedometer ranges from 70-120 won't come back down.
Speedometer completely failed, right after truck turned 100,000 miles.
My speedometer started acting up saying that I was going faster than I was going. Now it stays on 120 and now my oil pressure gauge is starting to do the same.
I have 12,000 miles on my 2003 Silverado and my speedometer constantly fails giving me readings of 120 mph to total failure. This is a serious safety concern. The vehicle has technical bulletins associated with this complaint but there is no recall. Please advise before an incident associated to this speedometer failure occurs.
While driving around 65-70mph my speedometer stuck. While slowing down after reaching speeds of nearly 70mph, I realized my speedometer was not backing off of this speed. I then did not know how fast I was driving. The speedometer is now stuck at 67mph. From what I understand I will have to replace this actual unit for $500. I have seen this same issue all over forums on the web.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado. While driving at various speeds, the speedometer displays inaccurate readings. There was a courtesy recall regarding the instrument panel, but the vehicle has too many miles. The current mileage was 78,000 and failure mileage was 72,000.
I have a 2003 chevy Silverado. Today the speedometer malfunctioned. At first it registered zero. Later in registered but only went up until it finally went past 120 and off the scale. This is clearly a malfunction that is dangerous.
I own a 2004 Silverado. As with an ever growing list of fellow owners of chevy and GMC 2000 to 2005 trucks, the speedometer has quit working with only 40,000 miles on the vehicle. This is a safety hazard not being able to know the speed at which our vehicles are traveling at!.
2005 Chevrolet 2500hd speedometer went out it was showing the wrong speeds, got stuck at 120mph the wouldn't go below 70mph. Very unsafe, chevy should recall the dash cluster, I mean come on. . . $55,000 dollars should at least get you a working speedo. . .
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado. While driving 70 mph for 20 minutes using the cruise control, the speedometer reading was 95 mph and the rpm was 2000. He didn't notice any warning indicator lights at the time of the failure. After coming to a complete stop, the speedometer read 45 mph. The dealer stated that the electrical instrument control panel clusters needed to be replaced. He has not called the manufacturer. The failure and current mileages were 32,640.
2004 Chevrolet Silverado speedometer has stopped working exactly as outlined by the other complaints, speedometer registers randomly with incorrect speed or stuck needle. I called my dealer and parts and labor amounts to around $500. 00. I asked a friend of mine who is also a service manager at the dealership if this is a common problem and his response was ?ohhh yeah, I don?t know why they haven?t recalled it yet. Chevrolet may not be considering this a safety issue, but if that is the case why do we even have speed limits? speed limits are intended to provide for the safety of the community, will a person with out a working speedometer be able to stop in time when a child runs out in front them? chevy better hope so.
