Oil Pump Problems of Chevrolet Silverado

Chevrolet Silverado owners have reported 7 problems related to oil pump (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Oil Pump problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/14/2014

The first incident occurred while driving the vehicle on the highway. The engine light came on and the dash readout gave a low oil pressure warning. The truck was towed to the dealer. They said it was a bad oil pressure sensor and replaced it at a cost of approximately $450. 00. Five months later the same problem happened again while driving on the freeway towing a horse trailer. I again had the vehicle towed into the dealer. They said the oil was low and did an oil change. The warning light was off when we got the truck back. The latest incident happened on 4/18/2015. The engine light came on again. I brought the truck to an auto parts store where they read the fault code. The code is p0521 - oil pressure sensor or oil low. I checked the oil it was nearly full but I added a little anyway. The light stayed on. I made an appointment at the dealer. The light went off the day before our appointment. I brought the vehicle to the dealer and now they are telling me that the truck probably needs an oil pump and a valve cover and it will cost approximately $1075. 00 to fix. I have done extensive research on this problem on the internet. There are hundreds of owner complaints on various websites documenting the same problem I am having. There appears to be a defect in the design of the oil system in these vehicles. My truck just went out of warranty in December 2014. They want me to pay for this repair even though I have already paid for repairs for the same problem while it was under warranty. This appears to be a serious product defect and gm should issue a recall.

2 Oil Pump problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/08/2010

I bought a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab used from bill byrd kia in panama city florida on 03/02/2009 and was told the vehicle would be covered under any remaining factory warranty, was led to believe it was a 5 year/100,000 drive train warranty. Unfortunately,. I did not do my homework on that statement. The truck had 36,581 miles at time of purchase. I have driven the truck for personal use only and took very good care and had regular oil changes performed. I am now facing a motor rebuild. The engine started making some knocking/crunching sounds from the low end and I'm told the camshaft, bearings, oil pump, seals, gaskets, etc have to be replaced at an estimated cost of $3,500. I have called the Chevrolet consumer number I found for their corp office in detroit and am told by Chevrolet that this particular truck only had a 3 yr/36,000 mile warranty. So I am left paying these repairs out of pocket on a truck less than 5 years old with less than 60,000 miles. I certainly feel ripped off after financing the truck for a period of 5 years. I have no choice except to pay for the repairs since it would have no trade in value in the condition it is in.

3 Oil Pump problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/19/2004

Noticed engine knock on cold start-ups as soon as vehicle was purchased. Purchased vehicle in oct. 2000, with 39,000 mi. (2nd owner) at approx. 85,000 mi. , noticed engine making a rattling noise as transmission up-shifted in 1st & 2nd gears after cold engine start-up knock went away. Took vehicle to dealer and was told that cold start-up knock was normal, but rattling wasn't. Dealer gave me service bulletin #01-06-01-028 which states that cold start-up knock may be caused by an interaction between carbon on piston, piston motion, and cylinder wall. Vehicle presently has 89,000 mi. On it and approximately 80% of said mi. Are highway mi. , so, carbon in my estimation, doesn't come into play! as far as the rattling sound goes, dealer found the hardness breaking down on camshaft lobes #1 and #4 (from front of engine). Dealer replaced camshaft, 2 lifters, and oil pump. Upon completion of said repairs, low and behold, I didn't notice any more cold engine start-up knock! you figure it out, but, my guess is, is that gm has a problem with it's camshafts again. (1970's and early 80's).

4 Oil Pump problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/05/2003

While driving a "pinging" noise could be heard coming from the engine. The dealer determined that carbon build-up on top of the pistons was the cause of the problem. Please provide any additional information. The oil pump was replaced but the noise was still present. Consumer concerned that the engine will fail if this is a lubrication problem. He brother has the same make, model and experienced the same defect. Vehicle was repaired by the same dealership and problem ceased.

6 Oil Pump problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/31/2000

Engine check light went on day after purchase. Saturday. Returned to dealer on Monday for checkup. Dealer said they couldn't reproduce the problem. Check engine light went on 08/10/2000. Returned to dealer. This time they checked the national computer and found that the knock sensors were overtorqued at the factory and replaced them. Why didn't they check the national computer when they had the truck the first time? started truck up in am 11/13-/2000 oil light came on. Checked oil, was full. Started truck up again, thought maybe guage was incorrect. Still no oil pressure. They towed truck in and replaced oil pump. The mileage was only 4513. I wanted engine replace, but they said there was no damage . Gas pedal sticking at 23550 miles. Returned truck to dealer. They installed new throttle body. Also oil filler tube was not installed correctly. Oil was leaking from tube. They fixed this also. At 26581 miles engine started to have valve noise on cold startup. Returned to dealer. They said nothing was wrong. On 12/05/2001 returned truck due to tapping noise. This time they said it was due to castrol oil filter. They changed oil and put on pf59 filter. Thought problem was fixed. Engine still has lift noise on cold startup. Also complained of transmission double shifting. Dealer can't find anything wrong. This truck has been in the shop so many times they should extend the warranty to 10 years, but I know they are afraid to do that.
