1 Brake Sensor problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 01/29/2021

On January 29, 2021, my 2016 Tahoe lt, with 69,676 miles, experienced a "brake vacuum assist pump failure". The vehicle was on a flat surface (driveway), in reverse, moving very slowly backward, when I engaged the foot brake pedal it was hard and would not stop the vehicle immediately, the vehicle eventually stopped after an abnormal distance (without warning the brakes failed to engage). Once I stopped, I turned off the ignition, waited a few minutes, then started the ignition and no warning sensors/ lights were displayed. I then placed the vehicle in drive to check the brakes. I moved forward slowly, when I pushed the foot brake pedal it was once again hard causing me to pump the brakes which caused the brake pedal to become fluttering and the pedal was pushed to the floor, the vehicle eventually stopped after an abnormal distance (without warning the brakes failed to engage). Because of the severe safety risk, I had no choice but to replace the brake vacuum assist pump on February 2, 2022, at my cost.

Failure Date: 07/02/2019

Bad engine cuts off while driving. Burn excessive oil and water. Motor makes loud noises. Brakes have to be changed every 2 months. Grinding noises when you take your feet of the gas , sounds like a 18 wheeler breaking down to stop. Now the engine won't turn over. Replaced sensors and timing but still not cranking. So now it needs a motor. Dashboard is cracked up so bad you can see inside to airbag. Which sometimes gets extremely hot.

5 Brake Sensor problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 03/26/2019

Recently purchased a used Tahoe from dealership with warranty. While driving in snow making a right turn the stabilitrac light came on, traction control, and abs. The vehicle fishtaled, engine lost response. The abs and stabilitrac warnings continue for a short time and went off. I was able to stop the vehicle safely. Second instance in the rain, on the highway. I was traveling in the fast lane, wanted to move over for a fast moving vehicle behind me. As I was changing lanes the stabilitrac light came on again, this time pulsing the a b s breaks. I had to steer harder to the right, to get out of the way. The throttle response was low as well. The Tahoe is consuming huge amounts of gas. About 13miles per gallon. Drags up hill. Seems like it hard to shift into higher gears. Return to dealership for service. Dealer cleaned throttle body, replaced mass air flow sensor. Returned it to me, I told the dealer to drive it,before I accepted it back. Three codes popped up. Back to chevy for diagnosis. Yaw sensor not communicating, etc. I told the dealer I feel the vehicle isn't safe. I gave them a list of codes off my code reader. It doesn't seem they are taking it into consideration. We haven't had the vehicle a month. The dealer is providing a rental. Seems like a common issue with the Tahoe and other chevy vehicles. The dealer also told me I had to recreate the problem and/or have the check engine light on for warrenty. The stabilitrac lights comes on intermittently as well as check engine light. I don't think that's fair. They are however trying to figure out the issues. I feel like they sold me a car with known issues.

9 Brake Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 06/30/2013

Noticed wet spot in driveway and checked to see what the problem was. Turned out it was major leak from corroded brake line; no warning lights ever came on but brake fluid was almost empty by the time we got it to the mechanic the next morning. Thank goodness my husband was diligent enough to notice the leak as we were getting ready to drive the 8 hours back home through the mountains and a brake failure could have been catastrophic. We had the brake line repaired and now 4 weeks later, another leak has occurred and again, no warning lights have come on. I could almost tolerate the issue of the corroded lines if the sensors adequately told me that the vehicle was not operating correctly. But, the fact that I now feel like I am driving a vehicle that may or may not stop when I need it to and have no indication of the failure before hand is very scary. I have read through the complaints, and I am not the only one that has experienced this. I do not understand why this has been an open investigation for 2 years and nothing yet has been done about this.

10 Brake Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 02/12/2013

I had to replace 2 brake lines that failed on separate occasions . The brake lines are covered in rust, the abs system does not work and is now disconnected. The dealer stated abs problem was front wheel sensors, after they replaced both sensors they than determined it was my abs computer. I told them to learn how to troubleshoot on someones else's vehicle and removed it. The under carriage of this vehicle had been coated with a lite undercoating from the factory, as the coating falls you can see extensive rust on the exposed metal surfaces. In my opinion the metal was not prepared correctly before it was coated, for this to happen. The service manager from the dealer stated, the rust condition should be a class action law suit. I have purchase no corrosive brake line and will change lines as needed.

The contact had the brakes replaced. The vehicle was taken to a personal mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was told the wheel sensor needed to be replaced. The wheel sensor was replaced. The mechanic disconnected the abs and the fluttering ceased. Afterward when the contact applied the brakes the steering would become tight but only when turning to the left. The manufacturer was notified and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 136,000.

12 Brake Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 01/31/2011

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated when coming to a stop and depressing the brakes, the abs sensor would engage independently and cause the vehicle to lunge forward. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who informed the contact that there was a recall for the failure under NHTSA campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock), which was repaired in 2006. The manufacturer was contacted but provided no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 47,663 and the current mileage was 91,000. Updated 03/10/11 updated 03/14/11.

13 Brake Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

The condition was likely to occur in environmentally corrosive areas. The vehicle was repaired under recall number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). Six years after the repair the vehicle experienced unwanted antilock brake activation. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer who stated that the abs sensor needed to be replaced. Since the vehicle was repaired under the recall the manufacturer was not willing to repair the vehicle under the recall again. The contact stated that the remedy repair did not fix the failure and the manufacturer should extend the recall. The failure mileage was 108,000.

14 Brake Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

Abs engages on my Chevrolet Tahoe as I come to a stop, preventing me to stop in a reasonably expected distance. I have a 1999 Tahoe that seems to have the exact same problem addressed by NHTSA recall campaign number 05v37900, gm recall number 05068. The problem occurs every time I come to a complete stop. As the vehicle slows to 1 or 2 mph the abs engages and increases the stopping distance. The vehicle was purchased and registered and used in new york from new till present. New york is one of the salt belt states that is covered in the recall listed above. I have contacted gm and they told me the recall did not apply to my particular Tahoe. I bought the vehicle brand new in 1998 . The rep at gm could not explain why my particular vehicle was not covered by the recall. . The vehicle was looked at by a gm mechanic. He said the sensors would have to be removed, cleaned, anti-rust material applied, and replaced. The work has not been done yet.

15 Brake Sensor problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 12/12/2009

This is a complaint about the abs. I have had them cleaned , which worked a short time, but now everytime I apply the brakes the abs tries to take over, lengthening my stopping distance. I do not feel safe using these brakes and would like to know how to disconnect them. These sensors may work fine in a controlled environment, but out in the real world of snow and salt , the life span is too short.

16 Brake Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 09/21/2009

The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds, he experienced unwanted abs activation. As a consequence, he experienced extended stopping distances. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and a technician concluded that the abs sensor and the wheel hub needed to be replaced at an expense of $2000. 00 . No repairs were made. The failure and current mileages were 128,000.

17 Brake Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

Abs intermittently came on when I apply the brakes. After several weeks of this happening the brakes became very mushy. Changed both front wheel sensors but didn't fix the problem. Took to repair shop and they said the brake modulator was bad - $1200 to repair. We disconnected the anti-lock brake system at this point. Brakes work fine without it.

18 Brake Sensor problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 03/04/2008

Abs activation during slow motion, under 10mph. This is the third time I've had this problem. Both times one of the hubs had to be replaced. This time I asked the mechanic to clean the sensors (as suggested by chevy service updates) to try and save money. It didn't work along with trying to replace the sensor. Now I have to have a hub replaced again. I've been luckily so far because I know of the problem, but I've had a few close calls with hitting cars in parking lots.

The dealer stated that the VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock), although the failures were identical. The contact would have to pay $705 to repair the vehicle. The state where he resides is included in the recall. The contact still drives the vehicle and shifts into neutral or turns off the vehicle when needing to brake, in order to avoid crashing into the preceding vehicle. The recall indicates that the failure occurs in corrosive areas. The failure mileage was 120,000 and current mileage was 127,000.

20 Brake Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 10/15/2007

21 Brake Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 09/10/2007

Bought vehicle used from gm dealer Jan 2003. In sept 2007, this gm dealer replaced left front hub assy due to abs stopping problems under 10 mph charging me $605 (vehicle had 95,000 miles). In Dec 2011, at 151,000 miles the vehicle again had abs stopped problems under 10 mph. This time repairs required from another gm dealer were replacement of two new front abs sensors charging me $340. Both dealers stated not covered under NHTSA 05v379000.

23 Brake Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 10/13/2006

My 1999 chevy Tahoe 4x4 starting having the abs system act up starting a couple of days ago. I called chevy about a recall that is on the website for 99 Tahoe and they said that my VIN number was not in the effected range of 99's. The problem is that at low speeds around 5-8 mph the abs system kicks on and I can't stop the truck almost getting into many accidents with it. This is a big safety problem now and they wont fix it. Now I need the truck fixed and its doing the same thing the recall states its doing. Its says there was a problem with the wheel sensors. Please help me with this since they won't. This truck is very dangerous to drive now that there is snow and I don't think I should have to pay for something like this. Please help thanks for your time.

24 Brake Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 02/01/2006

: the contact stated the abs activated at speeds below 10 mph. The vehicle was taken to the dealership and both front abs sensors were replaced. There is a NHTSA recall, # 05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however, it is not included in the recall due to the VIN.

25 Brake Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 01/16/2006

1999 Chevrolet Tahoe with 49,000 miles anti lock brakes sensors activating at speeds under 10 mph. Took to dealer for repair at our expense, we were told this vehicle was not part of a recall. Gm is now trying to offer us 25% of our cost. This is not acceptable since this is a safety issue. My wife almost drove through the garage door one day. (incident date is being listed as date of repair, the vehicle had many incidents were the sensors failed.

26 Brake Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 01/15/2006

On 1/27/06 I took my vehicle to a certified mechanic for a problem with my abs. He informed me that there was a problem with corrosion on the sensors causing the abs to activate at slow speed. He disassembled, cleaned and reassembled the sensor for a cost of $148. 00. I drove it again and the same problem occurred. I looked to see if there was information about the problem. I found a recall NHTSA # 05v379000 gm campaign # 05068. I took the vehicle to a Chevrolet dealer today for a diagnosis and was told I needed a hub assembly which would cost $350. 00 labor $180. 00 and that my VIN number was not included in the recall. As of today 1. 4 million trucks and SUV's are recalled with the same problem. I called gm customer service and was told that because I did not buy the vehicle new and did not have it continually serviced at the dealer there was nothing that they could do. I don't understand how they can pick and choose vehicles to be covered by this recall. My vehicle falls into the category of every stipulation except for the VIN number.

27 Brake Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 01/01/2006

I have a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe. There has been a limited recall on the wheel sensor that controls the abs brake system. I took my vehicle in for the recall but was informed it was not included in the recall. It has the same problems that chevy's included in the recall. The problem is. . . Sometimes the abs activates when the brakes haven't even been applied. Sometimes it activates at very low speeds causing longer braking distance. I finally pulled the fuse to deactivate the abs.

28 Brake Sensor problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 12/28/2005

Low speed antilock brake activation causing excessive stopping distances. Dealer service rep stated that the abs sensors were corroded most likely from road salt. Started out as very intermittent but recently became a constant problem.

30 Brake Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 08/25/2005

The consumer's 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe has anti lock brake issues. When trying to apply the brakes vehicle did not come to a complete stop. Saw recall 05068 t on NHTSA's website. The dealer will not commit to do a recall remedy. And gm did feel it has to do a recall. The car was unsafe to drive. My wife drove into a intersection and fortunately nobody got hurt. The sensors would pulsate and cause the vehicle not to stop.

31 Brake Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 08/15/2005

Minnesota is a "salt" state. The bearing/abs sensor assembly has become "bad" on my 2000 Tahoe causing unwanted and unsafe abs activation at slow speeds parking or just before coming to a full stop. The recall should cover minnesota as a state with corrosion impacts. A $35,000 vehicle 5 years old, truck class should not require consumers to pay $578 per wheel to correct an obvious and unsafe design flaw.

32 Brake Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe. While driving between 10-15 mph, the abs engages automatically whenever the brake pedal is depressed. As a result, the vehicle fails to come to a complete stop unless the driver slams on the brakes. Through online research, the contact found NHTSA campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). The manufacturer stated that his vehicle was not included in this recall. He then found an investigation (action number pe05020) and took the vehicle to numerous places. Some repair shops were unable to find any failures initially; however, when he took the vehicle to the dealer for an oil change, the diagnostic revealed that the wheel hub sensor needed to be replaced. The contact believes that this is a manufacturer safety defect. The vehicle has not yet been repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000 and current mileage was 200,000. Updated 2/209 updated 02/04/09.

33 Brake Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 05/01/2005

34 Brake Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 04/14/2005

The 2002 Tahoe abs defect in them. Called gm they are not going to warranty the vehicles in new hampshire, because they have not received a recall letter. There is no recall in new hampshire, because they are recall the ones canada. The brakes at a slow speed are activating, and took to a gm dealer and gm will not reimburse. Testing and found the abs sensors corroded and gap spread, per gm tech at dealership. The consumer has corrected the problem at own expense and wants reimbursment!!.

35 Brake Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 04/04/2005

I currently own a 2001 chevy Tahoe lt 4x4 and just had my brakes fixed because of a problem with the design related to the anti-lock sensors. For the past few months I've been having problem when coming to a slow stop the anti locking brakes activate, then having to use the emergency brake to get the SUV to stop. When I had the system reviewed, there were no indications in the various onboard computers that there were any abs errors, so it was suggested that the brakes will need to be done. I spent over $1000. 00 replacing brake parts and the problem still continued. The next review of the problem, the warranty company suggested that it could be the wheel bearings, but to first try and clean the sensors first. Since the wheel bearings are over $350. 00 each, we had the sensors cleaned. My local mechanic cleaned the sensors and at this point I've not had any more problems. But they told me I will again because of the design of the vehicle. The repair shop that fixed my car is located in so. Burlington, vermont "autoworks".
