While traveling on the PA turnpike 3/31/16 apprx. 3:00 pm, I experienced total transmission failure. Only after seeing smoke emitting from the vehicle, would the heavy traffic allow me to pull to the shoulder. I put the trans into park and back into drive, allowing me to move appx 100 yards to a safer pull off. The vehicle is at the dealer and gm has been contacted case # 8-1908837872. No further contact by me to gm, or from gm to me.

The transmission failed on entering freeway on ramp causing the vehicle to stall while merging with other traffic. Other vehicles swerved, skidded, and honked while I coasted my vehicle to the right shoulder and limped off the freeway.

2006 Chevrolet Tahoe with transmission failure. Consumer states that the vehicle only had 43,639 miles on it when he experienced major transmission failure. He states the manual says there is no work needed until 100,000 miles. The transmission failed while attempting to accelerate. The vehicle sounded as if it was in neutral. The vehicle slammed into gear and lunged forward partially into the intersection.

Vehicle with 43,000 miles experienced major transmission failure. While entering intersection, vehicle came out of gear and accelerated as if in neutral, then clunking into gear and lunging forward. Maintenance schedules show that transmission requires no servicing until 50,000, yet warranty only lasts until 36,000. Manufacturer is misrepresenting life of transmission causing unsafe conditions due to a defective product.
My 2005 leased chevy Tahoe had approximately 49,000 miles on it when the transmission failed. There was no forewarning. The car performed normally right up to the minute the transmission let go. I was driving 45 mph when a gear exploded and the car was left with only first and third gear. The car was brought to a dealer and gm refused to cover the repair because we had not taken their extended warranty. I was furious because after inspecting the torn down transmission, it was obvious that there was no abuse to the vehicle and that the gear had shattered inside the housing (I have pictures of the inside of the transmission). I first called the gm service 1800 number and they refused to pay for anything. After a week of speaking to agents and supervisors, I was given the name of the local chevy dealer district manager. I contacted him and after investigating, he offered to pay half the cost (total cost estimated to be $3200). I let the car sit at the dealership for 21 days while I fought with these people. Finally, they agreed to pay for everything but the dealership labor. They also said they would guarantee the rebuilt transmission they were installing for another 100,000 miles - that was of no concern to me since it is a leased vehicle I will be getting rid of as soon as possible! I paid approximately $450 for the repairs and picked up my vehicle after 28 days. It seems to me that if you are willing to stick to your argument and have the ability to leave your vehicle sitting in the dealership repair shop, you can bargain because they know deep down it is a defective part and should last longer on a $38,000 vehicle. If I wasn't 8 months pregnant at the time, I would have let the vehicle sit there until they paid for everything. Ps - it was a boy!!.

I have had my chevy Tahoe for just over 2-1/2 years. During this time, my transmission has failed twice. The same part also broke prior to my owning the vehicle. Three times the same part has failed yet my vehicle has little over 55,000 miles on it. It had approximately 40,000 the last time it was repaired. I have sought assistance from gm to get the transmission fixed but was flat denied any type of support. I feel this is a problem with their transmission that should be addressed by gm, not the unsuspecting owner.

Transmission failure at 25k miles. Driving at low speed and turning a corner when I experienced a sharp shutter of the entire vehicle as though I had run over something that did not allow my wheels to turn. Transmission could be shifted from park to drive but there were no forward or reverse gears.
I had a maintenance service performed on my 2002 chevy Tahoe at the carl Chevrolet dealership in san jose, CA. A minor transmission service was included with this service. They replaced the filter, performed a visual inspection of the transmission and replaced 4. 5 quarts of transmission fluid that was removed for filter replacement. I picked-up my SUV and drove it home. There was a slight delay in shifting, but this was only noticeable intermittently. The next day, I was leaving on a family camping trip and my transmission went out approximately 1/4 of a mile from home. We were making a right turn and I heard a loud "clunk" which was followed by a spinning or high rpm winding sound. Since we were about to start down a steep hill, I tried to turn around. As I was in the process of making a y-turn, I put the car into reverse. I had lost my reverse gear, so I was unable to complete the turn. This left my car stranded in the lane of oncoming traffic. Fearing for my families safety,I put the car into neutral and pushed the car forward into a driveway to prevent blocking the lane. I had my Tahoe towed back to the carl Chevrolet dealership. The transmission tech stated that the sun shell gear had worn out and caused the transmission to fail. He also stated that there was no connection between the previous day's service and the transmission failure the following day. The service manager stated that this is a common problem with the 4l60e transmissions that are standard equipment in the Tahoes. The transmission tech also stated that the Chevrolet distributed a technical bulletin within the company advising the mechanics that the sun shell gear was faulty due to a lack of proper heat treating. Chevy has been aware of this problem since the year 2000. I asked chevy customer service for financial assistance and they offered to pay 10% of the bill. My family was put at risk due to this known part defect in the transmission.
I purchased a used 2002 chevy Tahoe from grand auto, northglenn CO, at the end of may 2005. I drove the car for 4 months, putting on ~11,000 miles. On oct 16, 2005 I was headed to dinner with two other people in the car. I turned right on to 95th st heading south. There were cars coming behind me, but there was plenty of room for a proper acceleration to cruising speed without in-convincing the other drivers. As I accelerated through first gear, all was fine, then the car tried to shift into second gear. As it tried, there was a popping sound, the motor rpms increased to red-line, and there was a squealing sound. I let off the accelerator, and tried to get over out of traffic to see what happened. Luckily there was enough shoulder and enough time to get out of traffic and try to figure out what the problem was. As it turned out, the transmission had lost 2nd gear, 4th gear, and reverse, leaving the vehicle close to useless, and unsafe to drive. While I was able to safely exit traffic, no all may be so lucky. If you pull out into traffic, or try to cross traffic and the transmission fails, losing 3 of 5 gears, you could easily have disastrous consequences. After getting home and researching this problem I found that this is covered in a gm TSB, 00-07-30-022 Nov 00 a/t. I also found many stories of this failure mode, indicating that this is not an isolated incidence, nor is this a one in a million failure mode. I believe this problem should be re-classified from a TSB to a recall, because of the probable safety issues.
Transmission failure. Vhicle became inoperable and required towing to repair facility. Transmission required replacement.

The consumer was unable to place the vehicle in reverse. The dealership informed the consumer that the transmission failed.
My 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe transmission just failed. Have no 2nd, 4th or reverse gears, always worked perfect until now. After a web search found out this problem is happening very much. Sun gear shell breaking on 4l60e transmissions. There is a big defect and gm has done nothing to fix the problems to all the gm owners. Seems they cut back a little much on quality control this time and don't seem to care about it from what I have seen. You probably heard about it before. Please help us get this problem recalled. I have not had any repairs done yet. Keep hearing $2000 to $2500 t0 fix this $40 part. Dealers want to replace transmission with new one just of this porblem. Does it seem right to you?.

Consumer stated transmission failed three times. . First year that consumer had the vehicle he had to replace transmission. Then, exactly one year later the same thing happened. Currently, transmission failed again. When consumer stopped at a traffic light vehicle moved a little and started to shake. Finally, it stopped doing anything. Consumer felt he purchased a lemon.
Transmission failed. Part has been repaired three times; however, problem still exists.
4th transmission failure in 4 years. On the last rebuild, I had the dealership repair the defective wire harness per the TSB but apparently it did not help. The dealership and Chevrolet both say it is not their problem but I think there is a defect and it is their problem.

The automatic transmission failed.
Transmission failed 4 times at approximately. 80000, 98000,119000, and 153000 miles. Although truck has high mileage, it is mostly hi-way. Light towing use - 5,000lb boat, 5,000 horse trailer. Little 4x4 use. All replacements done by gm dealer. Did not work correctly after last transmission replacement - had to put back in shop. They changed an electrical harness.
Automatic transmission failure. Extremely common to my 97 chevy Tahoe. Required complete rebuild and lots of money. I called probably a dozen transmission repair facilities and almost all said I was lucky I made it to so many miles before this happened as it is very common in this transmission. All say it comes from a structurally flawed in design piece in the trans that breaks and of course completely contaminates the trans with metal and destroys the majority of the remaining parts.
Vehicle will not go in reverse, it jerks and changes over slowly and grinds. Transmission has failed for the fourth time . Dealer has been putting in new transmissions. Transmission seems to fail every 15,000 miles. Dealer was notified.
Automatic transmission failed. Ecm code 1870 slippage. Valve body fails either by contamination or defect causing high line pressure causing hard 1-2gear shifts. Hard shifts cause internal damage and eminant failure. I've read hundreds of other similar failures that sound identical. This cannot be by accident. All transmissions are gm 4l60e.
Vehicle was taken to a transmission shop for jerking between 10-20mph. . . I was told that the transmission had internal problems and it was common for the Chevrolet trucks from 1996-2001 I have found well over 50 complaints of transmission failure on the internet in a matter of hours. I feel this is a serious problem that general motors needs to address.
I purchased my vehicle with 42,093 miles with the dealers additional coverage of 3,000 miles bringing the total coverage to 45. 093 miles on 06/25/2001 at 47,297 miles my vehicle started hesitating on the start after being stopped it was taken to the repair dealer meissner Chevrolet at 70th essington Ave phila PA where it was found to have code 1870 internal transmission failure it has to be replaced I'm very dissapointed about this I always wanted a chevy trunk and now I sincerely regret it.
The transmission failed while driving. Nlm.
Suddendly and without warning driver heard a loud "bang, after driving a few hundred more feet the vehicle would not shift into second gear or into reverse, vehicle towed to dealership for transmission failure.
Transmission failed as left parking space at low speed by making a loud rattling sound. Lost power to the wheels. Dealer confirms complete transmission failure and need to replace at cost of $2,000. This vehicle has not had heavy use and should not have a transmission failure until at least 100,000 miles instead of 44,000 miles. Warranty is 36,000 and no extended warranty purchased. I have checked recall and service bulletin database and found nothing to help me negotiate with manufacturer. If you know of relevant information, please inform. Thanks.
Consumer experienced premature transmission failure.
