1 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2008 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 11/23/2020

I have a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country minivan that is in mint condition. I brought my van to a dealership for a repair. There was also a recall for the driver side airbag. The issue is 14 people have been injured by the plastic emblem that has become loose and can become a projectile in the event of airbag deployment. The tech said the recall has them remove the emblem on the steering wheel and they don't replace it with anything. Most people decline it because they don't like the way it looks. I told him I did not want this recall performed on my car until Chrysler has a better fix. Unfortunately, the tech forgot to take the work order for the recall off in the computer and they removed the emblem anyway. Also scratched the leather on the steering wheel when they were prying the emblem off. You can imagine my horror when I picked my car up and found that a decorative trim piece was ripped off. No replacement of any kind, just an open gape with holes where the emblem used to be on the steering wheel. Very noticeable!! this is unacceptable and I want to put it out there that Chrysler lied in their press release on July 14, 2020. This is what they said. . . Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's air bag cover with a redesigned cover, free of charge. . At this time there is no fix! there is no redesigned cover! don"t have a recall if you don't have a fix for damage to your customers car! called Chrysler and they still have no fix for this. What! way to stick it to your customers! they don't have any more lawsuits but leave the car owner with damage to their car. What if I wanted to sell my car? this devalues it! thanks Chrysler!! I want to know if the ceo, mr. Manley, of Chrysler would appreciate me going in his car and removing a decorative piece of trim or emblem with no regard for how it makes the car look? you know it would not be ok!.

7 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2007 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 09/01/2017

I had an accident and the under dash driver side air bag deployed. In front of the air bag is a large metal bracket , that is strapped to the front of the air bag. The metal plate stuck me in the shin, right leg and created a bone contusion and 3 inch high hematoma. The hospital said it was the worst one they had seen 3 months later I am still in awful pain and out of work. I contacted Chrysler after speaking to several shops who said they had never seen a design with a steal plate in front of an airbag. Chrysler refused any responsibility. They did send an inspector. More specifically the air bag is mounted to the van structure then, nylon straps are sewed to a steal plate in front of the air bag, a plastic cover under the dash clips into the steal plate. In my case the plastic cover dropped and broke and steel plate hit me. There is no way possible way for the actual airbag to protect the driver being the steal in front of it. Very, very disappointed to be so injured by something they designed so poorly. Then they refuse any responsibility. I would highly caution any other Chrysler town and country drivers. This is not safe. I am a young woman with strong healthy bones. I couldn't imagine if a senior person had this happen. Thank you for your time.

11 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2014 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 07/16/2014

Subject vehicle (2014 Chrysler town and country van, vehicle 2) was involved in collision accident with 2005 Ford mustang (vehicle 1). Vehicle 1 pulled out from a stop sign to turn left onto 4 lane thoroughfare with a large truck turning right onto street where vehicle 1 was stopped. Vehicle 1 driver's view of traffic was hindered by turning truck. Vehicle 2 was in the inside lane passing the truck. Vehicle 2's right front corner collided with left front corner of vehicle 1 at full vehicle speed since driver of vehicle 1 did not see vehicle 2 pulling out around truck in time to brake. Vehicle 2 driver side steering wheel airbag, driver side knee airbag and passenger side airbag all deployed. Driver was the only person in vehicle 1. Driver of vehicle 1 sustained extensive abrasions and bruising of both legs from the knees down and of one foot from the force of the knee airbag. The knee airbag also prevented the driver from pressing on the brake pedal to stop the vehicle since the airbag was between her feet and vehicle brake pedal. The vehicle traveled 3-4 car lengths crossing into the oncoming lanes before coming to a stop against the curb on the opposite side of the street. The knee airbag appears to be a safety issue causing more injury than what would have been sustained without it and also hindering driver access to the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. The steering wheel airbag deployment did not cause any bruising or noticeable injury to the driver other than minor soreness in the chest. The passenger side airbag also deployed and broke the front windshield.

12 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2009 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

I was driving at approximately 45 mph when my t&c Chrysler minivan just shut off. I had to "arm-strong" steer it to the side of the road and restart it. Luckily I was not on the highway. Now the key fob randomly gets stuck at 'accessories' and I am not able to turn the car off. Apparently the ignition does not know the car is in park as well. When I get to my destination, I am faced with having to either leave the key in the ignition with power being drained from the battery (since thing are still on). . Or continually driving around and park, drive around and park, until the key will come out. This is an on going problem. I have taken it to my mechanic he googled and found other town and country Mini vans have been reported with the same problem, including shutting off while being driven going back as far as 15 years! there is clearly a manufacture defect with the ignition. On a separate occasion, my passenger side air bag opened while I was driving. I pushed it back in place. . . But since I hit noting, I don't know why it opened up to begin with. Except for after reading about the faulty gm ignition and how it affected the air bags. Now I have no idea if the air bags will work or not when needed. I have complained to Chrysler openly and repeatedly on their twitter account and their facebook page, they messaged me once through facebook and said they closed my complaint (but without ever having spoken to me). And they are continuing to ignore me. The problems I am having with my ignition are the very same problems owners of the recently recall defective gm ignitions are having. I have no doubt the ignitions are one in the same. I want this dealt with while it is fresh in the minds of people who demanded the gm recall! I want something done today! I'm afraid of my own car! ps the engine lags as well. . The rpm's drop below the mph randomly.

13 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2001 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 10/22/2013

Critical safety equipment has failed in my vehicle. Most importantly, the horn has stopped working and I am unable to alert other vehicles of possible dangers. Inoperative horn. Inoperative drivers side airbag, inoperative speed control system. These safety feature failures are due to airbag clockspring failure. Chrysler recall or notification code d17. The Chrysler d17 recall (clockspring failure) included Chrysler town and country vehicles from 1998 through 2000. Although the model year of my vehicle is 2001, the vehicle was manufactured in Aug. 2000. The horn does not work at all. The horn not working is a tremendous safety risk. I am very fearful for my safety and the safety of my family. The airbag not working also puts me and my family at great risk. I believe that my vehicle would be included in this recall because the part has failed and my vehicle was manufactured in 2000. My ultimate concern is the safety of my family and I wish that Chrysler would honor their customers by providing repair for this great safety failure. Please let me know if you have any questions or need further clarification. Thank you.

18 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2005 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 10/11/2010

My husband was t-boned in our 05 town and country limited by a truck carrying a double long horse trailer running a red light. The impact hit right at the sliding door on the driver's side. The glass on the sliding door and rear seats were knocked out. The metal from the van came in and formed around the edges of my 2 year old's carseat. No side airbags deployed. Chrysler sent someone out to investigate and said that the airbags were "found fully functional" and that the impact was not great enough to cause the airbags to deploy. The accident totaled out our vehicle and we feel very strongly that the airbags should have deployed. Had my daughter not been in her carseat correctly, she would have gotten crushed by the metal of the van slamming into her body. I just had our faulty airbag sensor light fixed in June 2010 (which was staying illuminated at all times) and wonder if the side airbags also weren't functioning correctly. My husband and daughter were slightly injured but it could have been better had the airbags deployed. Mileage at time of accident and total loss - 55,990.

21 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2003 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 05/03/2010

On Monday, may 3, 2010, I was driving my 2003 Chrysler town and country Mini-van and made a right turn into a parking space as the passenger side airbag abruptly exploded out of my dashboard. No impact prompted the malfunction of the airbag. Whatever caused the passenger side bag to explode did not activate the driver's side air bag. The incident was investigated by our insurance company and the authorized dealership for Chrysler to confirm that no impact had occurred. The seatbelts were not affected in anyway. According to service center at the dealership the following is what caused the malfunction: detailed repair quote dated 5/13/2010. Air bag control module, r&r 01/03 side performed diag test -- found dtcs in the system for active passenger squib 2 circuit open-checked wiring -- no visible wiring problem seen -- also found passenger squib 1 circuit shorted together - - needs wiring harness-module-instrument pad and airbag pn the passenger side. We have not had an independent expert investigate the above finding to confirm its accuracy. We have been diligent in our request for assistance from the Chrysler case representative. The representative from the Chrysler investigations department informed us on may 13 that Chrysler did not feel the malfunction was due to a manufacturing defect and therefore we would not receive any compensation. We have not been offered compensation from the authorized dealer either. The owner's manual does not have any instructions for the vehicle owner to have the air bag, air bag sensor module, squib wiring, clock spring wiring, or any other related items checked and maintained on a regular basis. We feel the authorized dealer had the opportunity for firsthand knowledge of the condition of these items from our regular maintenance visits, and should have been diligent in assessing them given previous manufacturer recalls for the same issues on other model years.

Failure Date: 06/24/2009

June 24,2009 the airbag on my 2004 caravan -decided to explode. I was not in an accident (also it was the passenger side air bag). I was leaving my house going maybe 10mph all of a sudden I smelled something like rubber burning, right after that the air bag exploded. I called Chrysler and they had the care investigated. They found that the computer for the air bag was defaulted. They would not fix my car because I didn't have a warranty anymore. They also told me that they disconnected the driver side one. So right now I am driving a car with no protection.

26 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 05/18/2007

The airbag warning light comes on in the 2002 Town & Country limited shortly after starting it and as we drove intermittently. It stayed lit for 5-20 seconds each time. I took vehicle to the dealer to ask the question, and was told the airbag warning light was probably caused by the clock spring. I was told that they were on back order, especially for steering wheels with the radio controls built in which mine had. The parts representative said he could order it but didnt know when it would be in. In addition, I there was a cost for installation as well as the part. I expressed my concern about an airbag misfire or failure to fire, and he said that the airbag deactivated when the light was on, but as long as the light was off it should work fine. Also there shouldn't be any risk of misfire, but he couldnt guarantee it. Is this considered a safety issue, especially since while the light was on the airbag won't fire? should I be charged for such a repair if it was safety related? I just purchased the vehicle from a private owner and just wanted to make sure it was safe since I travel with my family in it.

My 16 year old son was driving our 1997 Chrysler Town & Country Mini van. He was traveling at about 30 mph. He hit a truck that was parked along our street. The impact to our van was on the passenger front side. Neither the driver side airbag nor the passenger airbag deployed. Both passengers in the front hit the windshield. The driver was wearing his seatbelt, but hit both the steering wheel (which bent) and the windshield. My van is totalled and the truck needs a new bed and back fender all replaced.
