I was driving my 2010 Dodge Dakota down the street turning left when the entire vehicle shut down. I lost the engine, steering and brakes. I nearly hit a utility pole by inches. I started the truck up again and started without any issue, the check engine light came on, and I continued to drive down the street, when I went to go make a left hand turn again, the truck completely shut down again. At this point my truck when over and onto a curb, I tried to turn the wheel and brake but had no control (luckily no one was on the sidewalk so there were no injuries). At this point I knew I could not drive the truck and had to call to get it towed. Once at the dealership herb chambers Dodge in millbury, MA they told me it was the crank shaft sensor. I asked if it was a common part to break because of the near accidents I could of had and all they would say is that there is no recall on it. When I said I didn't ask if there was a recall I asked if it is common for this part to break and loose all power in the car he just repeated himself "there is no recall on this part". I have owned a 2006 Dodge Dakota (I had to replace the crank shaft sensor twice) and now my 2010 Dodge Dakota had the same issue. Between my 2 vehicles this part has failed 3 times. I am worried about this part causing accidents, and making drivers not having control of there vehicles. If a sensor fails I don't believe the whole vehicle should shut down it is a major safety issue and puts the drivers, other drivers, and any pedestrians on the street. I also contacted diamler Chrysler about the issue and I received the same response "im sorry there is no recall on this part".

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Dakota. After driving the vehicle from the sales lot, the contact noticed that the check engine light was illuminated. She took the vehicle back to the dealer; however, they filed bankruptcy and were closed down. The contact discovered NHTSA campaign id number 07v555000 (power train:automatic transmission:lever and linkage:column shift) and took the vehicle to another dealer. The dealer stated that they would repair one issue under the recall, but another issue had to be repaired for $700 at the contact's expense. The manufacturer stated that because she was the second owner, she would have to pay out of pocket. The current and failure mileages were 85,289. Updated 09/10/08. The consumer stated even after the recall was performed, he is still having problems with the gear shift. Updated 09/11/jb.

Driving between 35 and 45 mph. The engine shut off, the key had not been touched. The gas gauge dropped to nothing, the only light I noticed on the dash was the current mileage. I had no power steering, no power brakes, I rolled to the side of the road and put on my flashers, put the truck into park, turned the key off and then started the engine. It only failed once but if I was on a highway or in heavy traffic most likely my wife and I would have been in an accident. Miles on truck was aprox. 2,900 miles Dodge Dakota quad cab 4 door, v6 automatic transmission, manufacture date is 5/2007 I called the service department and they said without an engine check light on they may not be able to find the problem. I have a 3:00 pm appointment today. I told him he has 3 tries to fix it.
Loss of engine compression, which resulted in the #3 cylinder misfiring and the check engine light staying on and not able to reset. Vehicle was at the mechanics shop for 2 weeks. After receiving vehicle back, check engine light came on again. When the problem of the #3 cylinder misfire was detected, it was caused by 2 valves being bent, which according to the mechanic was due to a carbon build up in the engine. Vehicle is and always was well maintained and never had any sort of mechanical problem. I am the original owner and purchased new in 2001, only had 63,000 miles on it. According to the dealership parts department, the 4. 7l engine is known for a carbon build up around 50,000 miles or so and the problem that I had was not an uncommon one. Was also advised that was one of the kinks that Dodge never could correct. Gee thanks! I corrected the problem myself, however, I traded it in on a 2006 Toyota tundra. It's no wonder why the american auto industry is in such poor shape!.
On June 5, 2006 the engine light came on in our 2003 Dodge Dakota (approx. 25,500 miles). We took it to the Dodge dealership and they replaced a hose for the fuel line at a cost of approx. $250. On June 7, 2006 the engine light again came on and Dodge said an O2 sensor needed to be replaced (at a cost to us of approx. $300). With in the next 3 weeks our Dodge was in the shop 2 more times (for a total of 4 items in a month) due to the engine light coming on. The last time they told us the O2 sensor that was replaced was faulty and was the problem. This concerns me as the car was 5 weeks over the 3 year warranty so nothing was covered and the service we received at Dodge was the worst I have ever received.

Just bought a Dakota truck 2 wks ago, second day engine light went on and car kept stalling when driving, it completely turned off while driving. It also does not change gear; it takes a while to get going. This happened 1/18/06. On 2/10/06 I noticed an idling sound right after breaking and it didn't want to stop. Very unsafe driving with children. Uncertain of its brakes and the complete shut off of truck & or stalling while driving. I took it to Chrysler and wanted to charge $170. For diagnostic work 2 weeks after I bought it. Why haven't they recalled these type of unsafe vehicles?.
Contact states the check engine light keeps coming on due to the transfer pump and diesel injector pump malfunctioning. He contacted the local dealership, and they told him to wait until the light comes on again, and then bring the vehicle to dealer to be checked. The contact never knows when the light will come on, and does not want to be stranded in a dangerous situation. He has not contacted the manufacturer.

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Dakota laramie. The contact stated when it rains water is sucked up through the air intake and forced to the back of the engine, causing it to go into the pistons. There was no place for the water to go so it broke the number five piston. The consumer will have to cover the expense of having the vehicle repaired because the repair will not be covered under the warranty. The dealership will have to pull the head and replace the number five piston. The contact stated while driving the engine light came on, and the vehicle started missing.

While driving down the road at approximately 40 mph, the engine of my 2000 Dodge Dakota truck, 4. 7 liter v8, just quit. The result was a complete loss of power steering. Power assist for the brakes quit after two attemps at brakeing. I coasted to the side of road and stopped. I restarted the truck and check engine light came on. The next day, the check engine was not on. A week prior to this occurrence, the power train control module was replaced under warranty. At that time, only the check engine light was coming on. It would go out in the next day or so.

Consumer states: that abs light, engine light, and brake lights came on at the same time. The clutch packed in the rear differential is half inch long , and its job is to hold the clutches and lemon slipped differential, and it failed. It came out and shredded speed sensor in rear differential.
Various problems with 2003 Dodge Dakota. There were backfires at times, the pedal would barely move at stop signs, when backing out, the vehicle would stay in second gear for a long period of time and the consumer would have to let off of the gas pedal then shift into high gear, sometimes the vehicle wouldn't shift into overdrive, then as soon as it started to misfire, the vehicle would drop to overdrive, the cruise control was inoperative, there was a whine and or howl in the rear differential around 50 mph, the engine light would never come on, sometimes the shift lever would be placed in park and the vehicle would start, at times when shifting to reverse or drive, the vehicle would not move and the would have to be jerked around on the shift lever, the heater controls were inoperative, and there were noises when the lights on the radio were turned on. The valve on the transmission was change and helped the vehicle, but sometimes when the vehicle was shifted up or down in gear it would be a problem.
On our way to the hospital (after dark) when the oil pressure went to '0' and check engine light came on. Truck started slowing down (as if downshifted) and smoking. About the time we got to the shoulder of the road it backfired and a flash came from the back of the truck and it died. I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota. We had to call 911 and get a deputy to pick us up and take us to the hospital.
While driving 60 mph engine light illuminated. Then, the motor blew out. Consumer had the vehicle towed. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
I puchased this truck used with 12,500 miles. It has a rear window leak,I have yet to solve this problem. It also has some paint flaws. I had a problem with the gas cap which caused a engine code light. When I went to local dealer to solve code problem,I was told that I had no warrantee. Dodge advertises otherwise.
The main bearing was going out and consumer needed to replace engine. While driving the consumer noticed that the oil pressure gauge dropped to zero and the check engine light illuminated and then would return to normal when the consumer resumed speed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who indicated that something broke in the top of the engine and caused metal shaving to end up in the oil pan and thus blocking oil from getting into the engine. As a result the main bearing failed and the engine had to be replaced. The consumer requested reimbursement 3 times for the cost of replacing the vehicles engine but was denied. *nolan.
Check engine light came on, engine locked up with only 665 miles. Oil pressure gauge also went to zero.
Two weeks after purchasing the vehicle and upon making a right turn there was a loss of power. Vehicle continued to run, but the vehicle would not move. This has happened four times. Also, check engine light illuminateed, and evaporation leaked. Took vehicle to the dealer, but problem recurred.
Transmission will not shift from 2nd to 3rd gear when climbing grades. Also truck will stall out with no warning or check engine lights.
Check engine light keeps coming on.
While driving the check engine light stay alluminated, dealer notified now sparactically comes on. Ts.
The contact had a problem with the oil pressure staying on high most of the time since August 12, 2002. In September 2002 the obd light came on. She kept taking vehicle to the dealer to be repaired. Every time she took it in to a dealership they would say that there was no problem. While driving in August 2005 the oil pressure dropped, causing the vehicle to die. The contact heard a sound, the check engine light came on ,and then three seconds later it died. Afterwards, she took it to a dealership, and they said that it was due to lack of maintenance. The contact has copies of most of the oil changes. The contact has the oil changed every 3,000 miles. She found that there are many other people having the same problem online. The dealership told the contact that there was sludge in the engine. And that the whole engine needed replacement. . The contact called the customer service of Dodge ,and they said that it was covered under warranty. The area representative told Dodge that there was sludge in the engine and that there was lack of maintenance, and that the warranty expired.
At just 22,200 miles truck in for third time for engine light being on. This time the thermostat was broken. Less than 1000 miles since the last time it was on, last time the canister hose was cracked.
