Dodge Dakota owners have reported 30 problems related to engine cooling system (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Coolant was leaking near cap, could not replace because dealer closed ,dealer only part, tried duct tape for tem. Fix until dealer opened, did not stop leak, was still wet at cap gave cap a twist to insure tightness,,, plastic housing suffered major failure, split apart and covered me with scalding coolant,2nd degree burns on 10% of me. . Beware if you have the 2. 5 l engine then you have this setup. All Dodge needed to do is make that thin plastic piece of junk a bit thicker.

The heat quit working in our 2001 Dodge Dakota quad cab. It would not work on any of the blower settings. I began looking up possible solutions to the problem. I replaced the fuse, and it still didn't work. I also replaced the resistor. While looking online for other options, I realized that many vehicles from Dodge from that year and surrounding years had a common problem. Everyone had mentioned the wiring harness was melted. Sure enough, I went and checked and it was melted just before where the resistor plugs in.
2002 Dodge ram 1500 4. 7 engine defect defective cylinder heads, loss of oil pressure engine lock up with loss of power steering and power brakes I have found hundreds of reports of engine failure they most often start with a cylinder misfire and go from their.

Warm weather causes 98 Dodge Dakota 3. 9 engine to stall at any speed, anytime. Engine completely dies and takes 20 to 30 min for engine to cool while off. Then able to restart, but problem persists within 5 to 15 minutes after cooling. Consequences are I have paid to have pcm replaced, as well as fuel pump. Could cause death on freeway when everything dies at 70 mph. Almost caused wreck today. No known fix, have spoke with Chrysler and dealership on many occasions with no answer.

Heater core in Dodge Dakotas. The heater core in Dodge Dakotas seems to be a really big issue with thousands of people complaining about the defective part. With a bad heater core, anti-freeze is expelled through the ac vents as a steam which is inhaled by the drivers and passengers. Inhaling antifreeze can have many results: antifreeze fumes can cause eye irritation and upper-respiratory irritation. Additionally, inhaled fumes, particularly if from a mist, can cause breathing difficulties, headaches, drowsiness, blurred vision, irregular eye movements, nausea and vomiting. Material safety data sheets show that repeated inhalation of antifreeze fumes may affect the central nervous system. Coma may occur if the inhaled antifreeze fumes were in mist form. Dodge really needs to make a recall on these faulty heater cores. I have read many forums where at least 5 heater cores have been replaced within 50,000 miles. That is way to frequent for just common wear and tear. It is expensive for the consumers to fix and has some bad health related issues from inhaling the antifreeze caused by this faulty part.

Check engine light came on code says its related to a condenser fan and wiring harness problem there is a technical service bulletin out on it and dealer says it is not covered.
The contact owns a 1998 Dodge Dakota. When the contact activated the heater, he smelled antifreeze. He inspected the vehicle and could not find any leaks. Approximately one month later, the overflow for the antifreeze was empty; however, antifreeze was still present in the radiator. The contact performs his own repair work and stated that the heater cores were defective. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The current mileage was 104,000 and failure mileage was 89,000. Updated 2/23/09 the consumer stated the heater core was leaking into the heater box, when the heater was on. Updated 02/26/09.
2002 Dodge ram 1500 quad cab has a surging problem at highway speed. The check engine light will come on and it is read as transmission fluid pressure sensor. This was replaced with a factory sensor and within 2 weeks it did it again. After 200 miles the light went out and the surging stopped only to start and stop repeatedly up to this date, 8/23/2010. How can a sensor repair itself? impossible! mileage at first check engine light was less than 100,000. Also dash is cracked to a completely unacceptable level for the age of the vehicle and mileage on dash at 138,000 with care taken to keep it clean and conditioned. Cracks began at 85,000 miles. Wipers when operating on high will lower speed and will continue to change from high to low intermittently unless they are turned off and turned back on several times. Do not consider this safe in any way. Intermittent wiper use with delay feature seems to be completely okay. Air conditioner will only blow cold air on driver's side and blows warm air on passenger side. After 45 minutes of a/c use, roaring sound issues from the vents and a gradual decrease in all air begins until only wisps of air escapes from driver side vents.
Timing cover housing that also houses water pump and thermostat, has poor casting quality where coolant enters housing from lower radiator hose resulting in erosion of material and ultimately leaks out radiator fluid. After speaking with Chrysler corporate, they are not willing to furnish pars for repair or labor to complete repairs. Even with having information that an average of 24 parts per week across u. S. Are being ordered and replaced they are not willing to act upon this problem. I feel that I should not be responsible for repairs that need to be made due to poor product quality for engine components that are essentially non-consumable.
I have had several alarming failures with my Dodge Dakota quad cab. It is a 2002 v6 auto transmission pw pl. I have had the ball joints replaced because of the recall, my transmission has failed (twice), my front hubs & spindles completely disintegrated and could have killed my family, my water pump has failed and had to be replaced, the driver side taillight seems to fail often, the vacuum hoses have all had to be replaced because of the cheap rubber used by the manufacturer fail by cracking and causing all sorts of leaks causing engine lights, loud noises under the hood, and horrible gas mileage. I have done everything possible to be proactive in my maintenance of the vehicle. I have had the major repairs done professionally. I do not understand how a 2002 vehicle can have so many potentially fatal problems and be ignored. I have searched high and low for quality bulletins but cannot find anything. My gas mileage is now down to 14 mpg and the truck is falling apart.

Intake manifold pan gasket was leaking. This problem was identified during an inspection by an independent mechanic, confirmed and repaired by a Dodge dealership. I was told this problem could result in destruction of the engine, despite the fact that the Dakota was running well. Repair cost $664. 72. Dodge was aware of this widespread problem, and issued a technical service bulletin the year I purchased the truck. Despite the fact that this problem was considered difficult to diagnose, Dodge did not notify me and suggest that I have the vehicle tested while still on warranty. I am the original owner of this vehicle. Dodge has declined to assist in the cost of repair.

Water pump failed. Due to recent failures on this Dodge Dakota, I have also become aware that water pump failures were common on Dakotas. This failure mode was known to Dodge. I am the original owner and was not notified by Dodge.
I purchased a 2004 Dodge Dakota slt from elk grove Dodge, elk grove, California, engine started overheating, first two times they couldn't find the problem, the third time was a broken radiator hose and the fourth time replaced both cylinder heads as heads are cracked due to overheating. They found coolant on spark plugs.
Vehicle experienced problems with the upper ball joints. Owner took the vehicle to an independent mechanic shop to have the tires replaced. It was discovered that the ball joints wore out completely. When turning the vehicle in either direction the wheels squeaked and clanked when turning and going over bumps. Dealer found right upper control arm bushing noisy. Cooling system leak. Thermostat and gasket replaced.
Failure of upper ball joint. 2000 Dodge Dakota. Discovered during a tire purchase. Having fixed at dealership. Wear is premature.

Engine coolant temperature sensor housing gasket leaking. Factory installed. Bolts found loose.
I had to replace the heater core , $650. 00, in my 1999 Dodge Dakota sport 4x4. This is absurd since the vehicle mileage is only 54834 miles. I contacted daimler Chrysler they stated the failure was unfortunate and that they will log-in my complaint.
I have replaced the serpentine belt five times since purchasing my Dakota (54,000 miles) as a new vehicle from a Dodge dealership in '98. I have not received any reason for the constant wearing of this item. It has become a very expensive maintenance item.
The vehicle was leaking antifreeze. The window had fallen on the consumer foot. Scc.
I drove this pickup three times before running into a bad overheat problem. I was driving at a very slow speed because of traffic that day. My girlfriend and I were heading out for the weekend for some camping and fun when my brand new truck overheated on the freeway and spilled coolant all over the freeway. This problem ruined our whole weekend and my hopes of having a good reliable truck. Now I am having extreme difficulties in getting anyone in the customer service department to help with my problem about reporting to the manufacturer.
While traveling on highway consumer turns on air conditioner and it was blowing hot air. Also, vehicle was leaking coolant. Dealership is aware of problem.
When backing up there was a squeaking noise. The engine was not getting enough power, and was leaking antifreeze. The mechanic replaced the water pump and other parts. This stopped the squeaking.
Nothing but problems poor customer service should replace vehicle. No safety defect listed within summary.
This truck is a lemon!!!! help! no safety defect mentioned in the summary.
