Dodge Dakota owners have reported 19 problems related to engine exhaust system (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Continued failure of the exhaust manifold bolts on Dodge 4. 7 liter engines. I believe all repairs should be done under the emissions warranty up to 80,000 miles but that is not happening. Heads on the bolts are breaking at 50,00 and 60,00 miles. Teh bolts being used are clearly of bad design or defective from the factory. . First teh bolts ont eh passenger side failed adn now the bolts on teh driver side have failed. Internet is full of forums talking about this particular engine having this type of problem which has to be a violation of the vehicles emissions requirements.

Two driver side exhaust manifold bolts broke off. These two bolts where holding on the heat shield. The heat shield drop down and wedged it self between the engine and steering shaft. The steering shaft is now scored. The only reason I found this was that I know what an exhaust leak sounds like and went searching. If I didn't I would have never found it until my steering shaft separated.

Dodge Dakota 1999 consumer states vehicle front end wobble, brake vibration and upper/lower ball joint problem. The shock absorbers and transfer case was defective. The power steering pump leaked and there was extra play in the steering. A piece of the exhaust fell off the vehicle.
Bolts broke on exhaust manifold shield and shield fell between steering shaft and motor, causing steering to jam in straight ahead position on highway. Could not pull over to breakdown lane to avoid other traffic. Bolts broke from heat stress I imagine, not too good a thing to happen on a highway but would have been worst in city if I could not steer away from pedistrians. Just cheap undersized bolts that break. Checked the other side and found one broke there too. Bolts are too small to hold the manifolds in place after they wear with age.

The catalytic converter on my Dakota keeps falling apart. I have taken it back to the dealer for replacement 4 or 5 times now (the first time was not long after I had bought the vehicle). Each time they put a new converter on, it falls apart within a years time. I asked them about it and they blame it on faulty manufacturing of the converter. I know other Dakota owners that have the same problem and are given the same story (just faulty manufacturing). I e-mailed Dodge, but they directed me to the dealer. Is anyone being held accountable for this? my vehicle is no longer under warranty, I am a single parent and can not afford to pay for a new converter when this new one falls apart. I see that there have been other complaints is anything being done??? my brakes also make a terrible noise when it is cold and/or rains or if it is foggy. The dealer said "OH, its just moisture" but there is really nothing wrong with your brakes. When it is raining, it seems that the brakes don't work as they should and the anti-lock does not seem to work intermittently. One other problem is the engine races after the truck has sat overnight or while I am at work, and it takes awhile before it idles at the normal rpm. I was told by the dealer, don't worry about it, it is just the cold air solenoid. What has NHTSA concluded in regard to the catalytic converter? or are you the wrong contact? dt.

Eimissions control system. In shop 8 times or about every two weeks for the same problem. Dealer has replaced parts to no avail.
Ever since I purchased the vehicle, while using the a/c, I have noticed a bad oder. His oder is noticable once the a/c has cooled down the interior. I would describe he oder as a "powdery chemical" smell. When I took the vehical in for routine maintainance, I asked about it and was told "we wil look in to it" and the problem is still unresolved. I want to know if this smell is dangerus because I have two young infants as well as my wife I am concerned about.
Second failure on exhaust stud allowing exhaust gases to enter cab.
