4 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2005 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 03/01/2017

Mine is the 2005 Dodge Dakota extra cab and the exhaust manifold bolts breaking/shearing at the engine block. This can cause (and it has) a ticking sound that gets louder as you accelerate. Once you hear the ticking sound, both sides of the engine are affected. This results in poor mileage, overheating, engine will stall at low idle, ultimately allowing exhaust fumes to enter the cabin, potentiallu, poisoning the occupants with carbon monoxide fumes. I took this vehicle to the dealer to have then replaced. The 1st dealer said it wasn't repairable. 2nd one said, 1400 $ per side to extract broken bolts at the rear of the exhaust manifold on both sides of my 4. 7 . 3rd repair shop told me this very common on the 4. 7 and he does about 10 a week. His price was 350 $ per size plus gasket and doughnut gasket at the collector. Hey! if this is such a common problem why are we Dodge owners being hostage by having to make this repair ourselves and pay for it? it is an emmisions engineering underdesign that needs to be fixed and a recall needs to be issued. It is a design defect. Please investigate and get this situation corrected before some innocent child dies from carbon monoxide entering the cabin. Not to mention other potential hazards that may occur because the driver is overwhelmed by carbon monoxide and runs down 78 people because they passed out from the carbon monoixide filled cabin while driving. Please. Do. Something. Time is running out. Before somebody is killed.

5 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2003 Dodge Dakota

10 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2002 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 12/19/2007

The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Dakota. When starting the vehicle or after the vehicle becomes cold, the gear will not shift out of park for 30-40 minutes. While driving between 35-40 mph, the engine light remained illuminated. The contact drove to the dealer and they replaced the battery, the gas emission canister, and the hose package for emissions, the timing chain, the manifold exhaust on the left side, and the insulator steering gear. The vehicle was still under warranty. When the contact retrieved the vehicle, it was rattling and revving up to 2,500 rpm's. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer and remained there for over a month. When the vehicle was retrieved the second time, the alarm system was not working. The contact does not want to take the vehicle back to the dealer because everytime he gets the vehicle back something else fails. The current mileage was 80,552 and failure mileage was 79,700.

11 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2002 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 03/28/2007

Purchased 2002 Dodge ram used. At first service interval, rack and pinion boots were leaking, main seal was shot. Also had manifold leak, along with a steering problem that causes shaking at 40 mph. Steering problem still remains, and there is a loud rattle that the dealership cannot find. This vehicle has been a nightmare, most recently, my fuel pump decided to quit working. Also, the interior trim, namely the hand grips on the driver and passenger door have been replaced numerous times, due to the cheap plastic that is used as a holding ring. Do not purchase this type of vehicle. Have had nothing but headaches with the truck, from the simple things, to the expensive things. . . Was just told that my head gaskets are shot as well, have spent thousands on this truck, with no returns, do not get this year/model of ram 1500.

12 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 10/15/2006

I own a 1997 Dodge Dakota slt. The engine is a 5. 2 v8 with only 45,000 miles my complaint started around 40,000 miles. I am getting a severe spark knock and a tremendous oil consumption 2. 5 quarts every two hundred miles. They installed faulty engine intake manifold plenum pan gaskets. Through my extensive research there have been countless complaints on this. I was driving down the highway and my check engine light came on and checked my gauges I had a complete loss of oil pressure. Luckily no one was behind me because my engine stalled!!! the Dodge dealer told me this is very common, so why are they not taking responsibility?.

13 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 02/28/2006

My wife was driving home from work in my 2000 Dodge Dakota pickup truck. She heard a knocking noise and the engine locked up. Fortunately she was able to coast to a stop (she of course lost all power assist to the steering and brakes). The dealership denied my extended warranty claim so I purchased a rebuilt engine block and I am in the process of having it installed. There was excessive sludge buildup in the manifold and a piston rod had broken.

14 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 11/12/2004

I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota. I bought it with 11,000 miles on it. During my warranty at about 20,000, the truck would backfire when shifting up a gear. Towson Dodge had my truck for a day and said that they couldn't duplicate the circumstances and it cost me $75 anyway. Around 45,000 miles my truck was running real poor with no power. The catylitic converter clogged up so bad the truck stopped running. The goodyear place where I took it, carney tire, didn't tell me of the federal warrenty on converters and replaced it and the muffler for a few hundred dollars. After my learning of the warrenty, carney tire refused to refund 50% as suggested by the Chrysler rep. On the phone. Now at 80,000 miles the muffler rusted enought to loose the tailpipe, which now resides in my driveway. This is totally unexceptable for this truck. I had an '87 Dakota with 145,000 miles on it and never had an exhaust problem . I was going to trade it in for a 2500 ram but this and other complaints will keep me from ever buying another Chrysler. I will bad mouth Dodge, especially towson Dodge (schaefer & stromenger), to anyone who askes me. The service managers over there didn't help a bit. I was given a service bulliten by the mechanics about a broken bolt on the manifold after my third visit, when the 2 managers weren't around. I'll never buy anouther Chrysler product and I'll badmouth Dodge to everyone I can. I'm going to buy a GMC product where I know they take care of any complaints a customer might have, beings they know the customer is always right.

18 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 04/01/2004

Faulty intake manifold gasket in my 99 Dodge Dakota with 38,900 miles on it. Chrysler daimler covered only parts. It cost me 370 dollars to get it repaired. I contested when they said they would only cover parts. Chrysler stated that it was out of warranty and that this is all they would do. I found numerous complaints on the internet of other people with the same problem with a leaking intake manifold gasket at very low miles on this Chrysler product. I believe that this is unacceptable. Chrysler won't talk to me anymore. They stated that the only way I could still fight it was to pay the full price for the repair and then contest it. I needed my truck back. The dealer told me that it was unsafe to drive it far do to the oil consumption. I was stuck. I paid it cause I needed a vehicle. Age shouldn't matter in a case like this. 38,900 is way to low of miles for a major repair like this. I am worried that it will happen again and that Chrysler will just say "tough". I have read complaints on the web where people have had it replaced 3 times within 100,000 miles.

19 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 03/04/2004

Purchased used 1998 Dodge Dakota truck in April 2002 from Toyota dealer with mileage of 42,000. I heard a knocking noise in motor on 11-11-2003 took to my mechanic and he had to replace bolts in the manifold. Again on 3-2-2004 heard clicking noise in wheel my mechanic had to replace front suspension ball joint. I wrote a letter to daimler Chrysler of the problems and they said that they are unable to assist me with the problems because I was no longer covered under the warranty. So I feel, that other purchasers should be made aware of the protential problems with this vehicle.

24 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 08/05/2002

I had catalytic converter replace last summer because it was defective . I have an exhasust leak know and took it to the dealer and they said I have 3 broken exhaust manifold bolts. They said it would cost 65 to 75 dollars apiece to fix. I work for daimler Chrysler at twinsburg stamping as a machine repairman. I have never heard of exhaust bolts just breaking. I beleive there is a problem here they ought to fix. There more people at work that had the same problem. Thank you.

25 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 06/25/2002

We have been told by mckinney Dodge in mckinney, texas that we have an intake leak on our manifold. We have made arrangements with our mechanic to have this fixed. I went to the west loop Dodge in ft. Worth and picked up the manifold gasket kit from the parts department. Upon reading the insert it stated that the new bolts are now 1/2 inch longer and that the gasket itself is now thicker as well. Also with speaking with our mechanic, he informed us that we are the second truck in the past two weeks that has had the same problem. He was even able to tell us exactly where our leak was before inspecting it. This seems to me that Dodge has been aware of this problem and instead of recalling their defect in their product, they made changes to the gaskets and bolt sizes and are now charging over $600 to have this repaired. I feel that this should be considered a defect in their product and Dodge should be responsible for paying the bill and not the consumer that has purchased their product.

26 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 06/07/2001

The mainfold bolts broke flush with the manifolds. 1998 4 cylinder Dakotas are known for this defect. Chrysler will not pay for any part of this problem. They claim ignorance and basically told me I was stupid for not buying an extended waranty. I talked to and showed the truck to other mchanics and they said, "this shoudl not have happend to this truck. " Chrysler also told me when I called to take it to a Chrysler/Dodge dealer to get the work done for any consideration of helpingh to cover expenses. I did that and got an outrageous bill fro 1806. 99. I called the damler corp. Back and josh told ne too bad. I also have been doing research and it is my understanding that even though it has been recorde in 4 cylinder Dakotas you cna ssume the ame problem exists in the same make and model and year trucks. I am outraged. I have had nothing but problems with my 1998 Dodge Dakota truck. To date the catalletic converter, drive column, gear box, dome light switch and ball jpint have been replaced. All were covered except the ball joint. They told me it just passed at the lower end of their standard using some sort of tool. That's a crock. Also, I had to take it to 3 dealer sto get a water leak fixed. I had over 3 inches of water in my truck at one time. They finally found it and had to rip out the entire interior and clean it becasue4 it stank. How do I know that isn't going to rust in the future becasuse of the leaks. Now, the manifold studs have broken. I also had to get a car rental at the cost of 600 plus dollars. What can I do and how do I get daimler to own up to their poor quality/defective products?.

27 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 09/17/1999

Truck bucked violently and stalled immediately after getting discount gas, stalled thereafter shifting from reverse to drive and while waiting at stop signs/red lights . Dealer said it needed tune-up, problem not solved. Different dealer fixed gasket on intake manifold that was drawing oil into engine. Soon after transmission would hesitate before shifting, then rev high (from 2,000 rpm to 4,000) suddenly, then shift to next gear. First dealer claimed pinion bearings were worn, problem was not with transmission. Problem continued day after pinion bearings replaced, dealer pressed to look at transmission. Diagnosed clutch failure. Day after repair rattling sound was heard from exhaust, returned to dealer. Bolt had sheared off into exhaust manifold from heat shield, dealer claimed it was from snow packing on shield. Copy of letter to daimler-Chrysler being sent to NHTSA.
