2002 Dodge ram 4wd 4 door currently on third engine after 2 drive train failures. Today the engine began making thudding noises, the vehicle bucked and the engine light was blinking. Further, when the front tire hits a small pot hole or other road deformity, the vehicle abruptly veers requiring drastic counter steering to correct, often nearly out of control. Repeated attempts to inform daimler-Chrysler corp. Have met with indifference and failure to acknowledge problem exists. I am concerned for my safety as well as my family's safety whenever I drive this vehicle. Keith bills.

Have owned 02 ram 1500 quad cab short bed for over a year now. After purchasing in Aug 02 had immediate problems with front end vibration/skip. Dealership replaced 3 sets of rims and 4 sets of tires, skip seams to be gone. However, continue to have vibration/shake at 40 mph and above, seems as if it is a drive train or engine problem but milton Dodge in milton florida states there is no problem. If a water bottle is sitting in the cup holder you can really tell had bad the truck vibrates/shakes. Have over 12 dealer service invoices where they have tried to correct with no success.
Timing chain broke. It caused damage to valves and head.

I bought a 2000 Dodge Dakota brand new from nelson auto group in marysville, ohio. The truck is less than 3 yrs old and only has 55,000 miles on it, which 95% of them are highway, and the engine went bad. I took it back to nelson's and they said the motor might need to be replaced due to somethings they found when it was hooked up to a machine. They are not really sure what exactly is going on until they tear it apart and really looks inside. They say it will cost a couple of hundred dollars to do that, and probably a couple hundred more to fix. If I just wanted to replace the engine on a truck that is less than 3yrs old, it will cost $4,624. 00. The service department said they contacted the diamler-Chrysler representative and they are not willing to cover the repair or even help with the cost. I contacted the diamler-Chrysler corporation myself and was told that a decision was made and they won't discuss it any further. The customer service person I spoke with (sandy norris), said she wouldn't let me speak to anyone else regarding the issue and disconnected the call. It is very troubling that we as consumer allow this type of inferior product to be sold to us. Then be told that unless we buy more of a warranty they won't back anything. Dt.

Vehicle is losing power when consumer is driving, and when towing objects, consumer will lose power again. Vehicle feels like it is about to shut off. Contacted dealer, and the dealer was not willing to do anything.
While traveling noticed a burning smell coming from under the hood. Consumer pulled vehicle over and saw insulation of engine was burning. .
Engine stumbles at 2300 rpm, two dealers have said problem is characteristic and not repairable. Steering is stiff at center very light elsewhere causing oversteering at the transition, also characteristic according to dealers. Steering problem amplified starting from stop and turning corner. Excessive vehicle roll and stumbling accentuates steering instability. Also noticable on freeway entrance/exit ramps when steering is on the transition between heavy and light effort.
Gasoline is getting into the engine oil system which could result in an explosion or fire.
Engine oil pressure drops to the low mark on the gauge with engine in gear, at operating temperture with a/c off.
When starting vehicle brake light came on. After releasing parking brake, light stayed on. Consumer states after a couple of minutes abs, engine check light, and emrgency brake light was on, then, vehicle died. Consumer has not contacted dealer. Please provide any further information.

Engine check light came on while we were on a trip to palm coast, FL on Thursday, April 26, 2001. The oil pressure dropped from normal to 0. We pulled off at the next exit. The truck was still running, however we called Chrysler and they said they would tow it to the nearest Dodge dealership. We told them to take it tallahassee as we were in madison. After one week being in the shop they told us the engine was blown due to non-maintenance (oil changes). We did not understand that because we had the oil changed. It was not every 3000 miles but it was sufficient. They told us that the oil had never been changed in this truck. This is totally untrue. We gave them receipts where it was changed and they said the inspector from Chrysler had to check it out. We had to pay russell Dodge over $200. 00 to break it down just for an inspection. The inspector for Chrysler came after 3 days and said it was not covered under warranty. So my husband works for prestige Infiniti dealership in tallahassee and we had it towed to their garage to look at. They told us the engine was gone and they had never seen anything like it. We are going to have to replace the engine. We believe there is a defect in the 6 cylinder 1998 Dodge truck engines, because we can prove that the oil was changed, therefore something in the engine was not working and caused a back up of oil or something was not functioning properly. The funny thing is that when we called to get a replacement engine, the person we ordered it from said they had sold 17 engines for 1998 Dodge 6 cyclinders in the last month. Now come on 17 in a month, what is wrong with this picture???? a 1998 is only 3 years old and our engine had 42,000 miles on it. Should not an engine last more than 42,000 miles without being totalled???? I think there is definitely something wrong here. Also the Chrysler corporation will not send us a copy of their inspection report do they have something to hide.

This trruck has been a lemon from beginning and Chrysler service center told me to get a lawyer and they do not care help me!! I have only drive my truck 1/2 the time that I have had it, because it always has broken down.
Loose clunking eminating from the steering wheel and brake pedal. This occurs when turning, accelerating and applying the breaks. Appears to be a loose fitting in the steering wheel colom or the mid shaft. Getting worse all the time. Only 21k on this truck. Also, truck slides all over the road when surface is damp or wet. This happens even at low speeds. Antilock system does not appear to work. Truck also burns up tires after 15k miles. Engine miss-fires and utilizes way to much fuel. Aprox. 12 mpg. Overall, my two main concerns are the steering and brakes. Problem. This is most certainly an unsafe vehicle which should be looked into before someone looses their life. The time is now, not later. I have been in contact with several owners of this year and model. They too report the same sittuation with respect to the steering and brake system.
While driving and coming to a stop vehicle will start to fail, and will not pull. Had to shut vehicle down and restart. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated didn't know what the problem was. The consumer stated that the front end was slightly out of alignment. The motor has a problem when the vehicle stops for a moment at a light or sign, it will shudder and choke .
No summary listed for above vehicle.
When turning very sharp corner vehicle dies. Vehicle could easily be rear ended. Also, gears do not engage properly. When shifting into drive it reads that it was in a different gear. Please provide any further information.
This happened 1 day after an oil change. A qualified mechanic should have noticed this. No safety defect mentioned in the summary.
No summary listed for above vehiclw.
The engine pings in normal operation at speeds from approximately 30 to 70+ miles per hour after the engine warms-up. The dealer, dispite repeated attempts, has not been able to resolve the problem which, in my estimation is a safety issue as the dealer can not (or will not perhaps) say that the problem will not lead to failure of the engine or some significant component. The dealer advises that they have contacted daimlerchrysler corporation and have not been able to get advise that will resolve the problem.
When running the a/c and stopping at a red light, then attempting to restart, and car just quits.
I have had three things wrong with this truck. All have been because the factory did not put the parts togeter right in the first time. I have the truck in the shop for the noises, if it is not fixed to the standards of a new 1999 truck, I will like a different truck. If this is not possible, I will sell this and never buy from Dodge again!!!.
Continued spark knock. Has been in shop 4 different times. Dealer not sure how to fix it.
While driving. Vehicle cuts off. Also while idling, giving vehicle gas or stopping at intersections, vehicle also cuts off.
This truck jumps around in the rear end when it is empty. Does not seem to be safe in bad weather.
No summary.
Engine fire.
Engine continually backfiring, unable to rectify.
Engine had fire coming from it and spread throughout the rest of car.

While driving vehicle caught on fire in the engine compartment on the driver's side, cause unknown. Please give any further details.
Engine knock. Dealer has tried to fix twice using tech bulletins and problem persists. Only fix I have found was to use highest octane fuel. Owners manual states only 87 oct. Is required and resulting damage from prolonged spark knock may not be covered by warranty. A service tech. Stated to me there is no fix avail. For this problem.
5. 2l engine has a loud knock when warm and accelerating past 2200rpm. The engine also burns 2+ qts of oil between scheduled changes. Cortese Dodge twice has told me this is normal behavior. Problem was reported at 9000 miles, still there at 12000 miles.
Engine problem due to oil sludge. Had engine cleaned by jiffy lube during an oil change after tech showed me sludge in oil cap and in the tube where you pour in the oil. Started having oil pressure problems and took it to dealer. They say that damage has been done to engine bearings and maybe rods and that at the best it will cost $4000 to fix. Not for sure if they will cover it under the warrenty even though truck is not 2 years old and under the milage. I have seen all over the internet that Dodge trucks are having problems with oil sludge. I hope that you can help.
Without warning engine blew while driving. Prior to incident, vehicle was inspected by dealer. Dealer changed the guage. Please provide further details.
