I watched the show on cbs about Dodge Durango's having a problem with the front ball joints in their vehicles and to date they have had 79 "incidents" relating to the front end/ball joints and Chrysler has not put out a recall for the vehicle. I have been stationed in guantanamo bay, cuba for the last three years and I finally got a chance to take my 2000 Durango in for some much needed work since arriving back in the states. I told them I had noise coming from the front end of my vehicle. We have heard this noise for about six months and then I saw the show in cbs about three weeks after arriving back in the states. Low and behold, you can add our vehicle to the list of problems. We had to have all our front ball joints replaced along with other front end work. Thank goodness I got the extended warranty, or I would have paid over $1,000 for something Chrysler should be recalling. We really enjoy our Durango, but we will think twice about buying another Dodge when they don't care about the safety of there customers.
The consumer heard a noise in the front of the truck. The consumer believed that the problem may have been the ball joints. After the consumer had been looking on the web to find a possible source of noise and researched the ball joints which he unexpectedly found to be sealed and unable to lubricate. The consumer spoke with a dealer about the noise. The consumer had not taken the vehicle to the dealer. The vehicle experienced uneven tire wear.
Both front ball joints shot-left so bad service dept. Said do not drive. I have the faulty parts. Why hasn't Dodge issued a recall?.
The front suspension ball joints and tie rods on my Dodge Durango 1999 are worn out prematurely. Occasionally when the steering wheel is turned, the front suspension makes a popping noise.
While replacing the front tires, the dealer noticed that the ball joints needed replacement. The dealer indicated to the consumer that he was unable to do the front alignment due to ball joint problem.
I was informed by my mechanic that the ball joints on my truck are defective. After being told this I saw the news the other night regarding the Dodge Durangos, and the tiers falling off do to the ball joints. My mechanic also told me that they needed to be taken care of. With a big price tag I was wondering what can be done about this. (there was no incident yet?).
I have a 2001 Dodge Durango. After seeing a report on the ball joints on tv I took my vehicle in to be checked. Good thing I did because the right ball joint was about to break and had to be replaced. The left ball joint has some wear but was not replaced at this time. There is a definite problem and it needs to be addressed.

The front end of my 1999 Dodge Durango started making noises around 50,000 miles. I carried it to a Dodge dealer where they informed me that the ball joints and the front suspension bushings were worn and required replacing. They further stated the reason was that there is no way to lubricate the joints. The costto replace is $800. This is to soon for this to be wearing out.
While driving the consumer heard a loud noise coming from the front end. The dealer determined that the ball joints wore out prematurely. The dealer replaced the upper arm and the ball joints.
Bad ball joints on my 1998 Dodge Durango. It has 35000 miles on it.
The vehicle was taken to the dealer for regular maintenance, and dealer found that the vehicle needed new bushings and ball joints.
The ball joint holding wheel on vertical axle failed causing wheel to tilt 45 degrees from a straight angle. Luckily this happened when my wife was leaving the grocery parking lot and was not on main road driving higher speed, otherwise could have been fatal. Ea03-023.
My 1999 Durango slt 4 x 4 has serious front end problems. I had to have the ball joints in addition to other front end components replaced in order to make the vehicle safe to drive. Everybody seems to know, ?everyone but me,? that this SUV is a rolling death trap. I have read so many complaints on the web that I felt like a sucker for re-entering the american car market. Chrysler knows that the ball joints on this vehicle are undersized and yet they have not recalled the vehicle. I am registering this complaint so that there is a record that yet another Dodge customer is out money due to their lack of quality control.
I have replaced two window motors and have another one to replace as it is out now I was wondering if there were any complaints or campaigns on window motors also I want to complain about front suspension either the ball joints upper or lower are weak or out but I have wear problems on my new tires and it should not be that way only being a 1998 are there any campaigns on this .
Front suspension of my Dodge durgango caused a cupping wear on my tires. The dealer said there was no problem with the front suspension, that I just did not rotate the tires, which I have done regularly. The tire dealer said he could not do an alignment because of bad ball joints. The car has 64k miles on it.
Bad ball joints (upper and lower) on 2000 Durango. Ref investigation pe03032.
2000 Dodge Durango. Popping sound coming from somewhere around the steering column. Have taken it in to Dodge three times and they cannot "duplicate" the problem. Sound occurs when steering slightly to the left or right. Have mentioned ball joint issue reported on the news and I'm told that can't be it. Mechanics at Dodge refuse to admit there is a problem with ball joints. Problem continues.
While having routine maintenance work performed on our car, it was noted that the front suspension ball joints on our '99 Durango are "dangerously" worn out. The repair facility mentioned that the same problem has been noted on all Durangos that have come through their shop and that such premature wear is not common.
Noise began in front wheel area and grew very loud within a short period of time. Also experienced steering issues (car shakes and pulls to right). Took vehicle in to check it out - had to replacel front ball joints and tension rods ends. We had to pay over $2000. 00 to repair this defect, and car still does not steer properly. Dealer reported to us that this is a common problem for this vehicle.
I have a problem with a grinding noise, and turning radius problem that just started with regard to the 2000 Dodge Durango. My vehicle is obviously out of warranty, but have been told by quick inspection of non-dealer mechanic that this may be related to the ball joint problem that is being currently investigated and was urged to file complaint and get the vehicle inspected by a dealer ASAP.
I would like to file a complaint about a defect in the Dodge Durango ball joints. In USA today, dated: July 22, 2003, there was a article indicating that federal regulators are investigating the Dodge Durango SUV for a defect that could cause the front wheels to separate from the vehicle because the ball joints had worn out and the vehicle suspension to collapse. I have an 1999 Durango with roughly 30k miles. In may 03, I took my car in for 30k mile maintenance and because it was running rough. I ended up having to have the ball joint and suspension for the front wheel replaced because I was told that the ball joints had disintegrated and the suspension had subsequently been damaged. I have only driven my Durango on the highway and I have never taken it off the road. Therefore, I thought this type of problem was very odd at only 30000 miles. After reading the article in USA today, it is clear to me the damage to my vehicle was due to this defect. This complaint is to further collobrate the 81 complaints already filed.
Vibration and noise in front end of 19'98 Dodge Durango. Had to replace all four ball joints and inner tie rod ends at 61000 miles. Mechanic remarked that I was lucky to have it repaired as it was ready to fail. After the repair an alignment was needed to bring wheels back to specs.
9/19/02 had to replace upper and lower bushings on my 99 Dodge Durango with 59,339 miles. Called daimler Chrysler and was told that they were not aware of any suspension problems. Then on March 8, 2003 I had to replace the right ball joint with 65,577 miles. Once again call daimer Chrysler and again was told that they were not aware of any suspension problems.
At 60,000 miles vehicle began pulling to left. Took to have front end aligned was told it would cost at least $700, maybe more depending on how many parts have to be replaced. Why do ball joints, tie rod ends, etc need to be replaced to align front end. Why require replacement at such low miles? these parts should last in excess of 100,000 miles.
Ball joints had to be replaced in my 1998 Durango in 2002. I kept hearing popping noises from the front wheels when I turned into a parking space or came to a stop sign.
Around 30,000 miles, noticed inner treads of front tires were getting low. Had alignment done around 20,000 miles and they said it wasn't neccessary. Went for another alignment at 44,000 because inner treads were now bald. Replaced tires and had alignment done. Problem, right ball joint is just about hanging off. Boot cover is fully stretched. Mechanic can't do alignment. Dodge says normal wear and tear (out of warranty). I don't think so, noticed alignment problem from start. Seems Dodge feels pulling is normal when driving.
I purchased a new 1998 Dodge Durango. I have had the ball joints replaced. Hree times since I purchased the vehicle. I am reporting this because of the recent news concerning the NHTSA investigating this particular problem. I still have all my receipts for work done.
The consumer heard of the ball joint problem/recall her model vehicle was having. The consumer requested relief under this recall but was denied due to time/mileage limitations. The consumer request reimbursement for her out of pocket expenses to repair the ball joints prior to receiving the recall notice.
Consumer inquiry as to why Dodge Durangos were only recalled to the 2000 model for the front end ball joints. *** answer required***.
Letter reporting the replacement of the front right ball joint assembly at 19k miles. The dealer replaced the ball joint free of charge.

Consumer took vehicle into the shop, because the vehicle pulled to the left. Took it to Dodge, and Dodge aligned the vehicle. Later, the problem resurfaced. The ball joints had to be replaced. The consumers mechanic(s) informed him this problem was not normal. The vehicle had constant problems with the front end. Within the first 10 k miles the vehicle had a 3 wheel alignment.
