37 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2002 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 03/23/2006

2002 Dodge Durango slt 2wd: ball joints were replaced after recall was issued, however about 6 months after they were replaced, the exact same noises began occurring again. Took car to dealer with the complaint and they denied the new ball joints were worn. Upon getting new front tires installed at sears (about 3 months after the dealership inspected the joints) they inspected the car without being asked (it is part of their service) and on the report they issued, it said the ball joints were indeed worn. The recall notices I have read about the replacement of the original ball joints state that if the joints fail you can lose control of the vehicle, so obviously I am in fear that my car can fail at any given time. I am writing this to make it aware that I have already had the recall replacement, but fear that the replacements are also defective as indicated by an independent, unsolicited inspection.

41 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 11/29/2005

On 10/24/02, I had to replace the upper and lower ball joints on the driver and passenger side of my 1999 Dodge Durango because I failed the state inspection and was told by the dealer that my truck was unsafe to drive. There was 46382 miles on the odometer in the vehicle at that time. My truck failed the state inspection on 11/29/05 because the upper and lower ball joints on the driver and passenger side of the Durango need to be replaced again! I now have 71508 miles on my odometer. That means I have driven only 25126 miles since the ball joints were replaced and now have to replace them again. Apparently this is a very common problem with Durango's and is a major safety issue. I see that Dodge is recalling all vehicles from 2000 onwards. Why are they not being forced to recall the vehicles prior to 2000. There can be many serious consequences if the suspension fails whilst driving the vehicle. Are you all waiting for people to die before you act?.

57 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 07/03/2005

My 99 Dodge Durango 4x4 has had vibrations and noise in the front from when I purchased. The Dodge dealer earlier told me there were no recalls or hidden warranties on this product, VIN# 1b4hs28y1xf650897. My goodyear dealer, inspected my Dodge and showed me that my upper and lower ball joints were bad (( moving over 1/2 in)) he said take it to your dealer, because this is not right. Dodge dealer also said that both right and left, upper and lower ball joints were bad and also that the hubs and wheel bearings. Were bad, and needed to be replaced for my safety. I called diamler Chrysler corp. And asked if they would cover this mfg problem. I was given clam #13756706. The customer service person said they would not cover this problem because my VIN # not covered by the upper & lower ball joint recall. I could not believe this would not be covered, because when I looked up my 99 Durango on your site on complaints, I saw over 500 similar cases for 99 Durango, with ball joint and steering problems. Dodge said 99 not part of recall. I think the u. S gov. Needs to tell Dodge to include in recall all the Dodge Durango with this problem, please look out for the safety of the amer. People and not alow Chrysler corp get away with this safety problem. I feel the amer people should not need to get the courts involved when we have an agency that should protect the amer. People from defective products. I hope this ball joint problem etc. Does not became another "Ford - firestone" situation. Dodge said they need to hear from you before they can do a recall on 1999 Dodge Durango's, (( with over 500 complaints of similar problems, how many more do you need!!)) I live in the washington, d. C. Area and when I drive I-495 beltway I hope you are not their when my front wheels fall off because of bad ball joints. Please do your duty and recall all Dodge Durango 1998 and up for upper & lower ball joints, steering etc. Please do your job and protect me and my family.

61 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 06/25/2005

My wife and I purchased a used 1999 Dodge Durango slt 5. 9l in October of 2003. The Durango had approximately 55,000 miles. For the past few months we have noticed an odd ticking or clicking sound while turning corners. On 6/25/2005 (with approximately 77,000 miles) we replaced the front tires as they were very unevenly worn. While checking the wheels we noticed that both the upper and lower ball joints had failed on each side of the car. They did not snap but there was far too much play in the ball joints. The upper joints have since been replaced, we kept the old parts as proof if needed. We will keep the old lower ball joints when we are able to replace them. No accidents resulted of this failure, although this being our main vehicle and driven almost everyday it was a shock to find such a failure on parts that are gauranteed for far longer than 80,000 miles.

62 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2000 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 06/23/2005

Daimler/Chrysler did a recall on the upper ball joints on some Dodge Durangos. I have had my ball joints replaced two times, the first time was the summer of 2004, before the recall happened, then again in Dec 2004 when the recall was announced. To my understanding when you replace ball joints upper & lower should be replace together because they are one component as with the control arms also. As an result of not being replaced at the same time it caused damage to my SUV. I am going to dispute this with the makers of the Dodge Durango, because these components work together, one going bad causes the other ones to go bad also, they should have repaired the unit correctly instead of taking the cheap way out. I was told by an repair shop that when the dealer replaced the ball joints they also should repaired the control arms, which did not happen. The dealer wants to charge me for something that they should have done I the first place. I am very disappointed with the makers of this SUV.

Dealer is now recommending the ball joints and tires be replaced again at cost $1200 for ball joints plus the cost of tires. The dealer had no idea why this would happen. 66 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2000 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 05/26/2005

Excessive lower ball joint wear I recently had the upper ball joint replaced through a recall with Dodge. During the states annual inspection the lower ball joint showed excessive wear and failed the state inspection. The truck only has 62,000 miles on it and nearly all on paved roads. The condition that supposedly caused the recall for the upper ball joint is the same found in the lower ball joint. Failure Date: 04/28/2005

I took my 1999 Dodge Durango slt 4x4 to have an alignment and I was told that the alignment ws fine but that the front ball joints were failing. The serviceman told me that all 2000 and later model Durango's were recalled to replace the parts. He also told me that my vehicles parts were the same as the 2000 year models that were recalled. The recall was because the ball joints had failed causing several accidents. Why the 1999 models weren't included I don't know. I sent a letter to Dodge and they gave me the generic answer that there were no recalls active for my vehicle. I haven't fixed the vehicle yet and all the parts are still in place.
