Rear left axel fell off my Dodge Durango and caused an accident. I was trying to get Chrysler to give me a copy of the inspection that was done by a inspector hired by and was denied. This model of SUV has had wheel problems in the past and I wanted to be sure it was not a defect. Consumer stated that in January 2004 she heard a noise coming from the rear end of the vehicle. She took the vehicle to the dealer, who repaired the vehicle. Then, again while taking a long drive, the consumer heard the same kind of noise. She took the vehicle back to the dealer, who told her that they could not find anything wrong. But the noise kept getting louder and louder. The consumer took it back a third time. Dealer kept the vehicle three weeks, rebuilding the front end. This was in may 2004. Currently, the consumer heard the same kind of noise. But this time the consumer was advised they could not solve the problem.
While turning consumer heard a loud noise coming from the rear passenger/driver wheel. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Rear end failed within only four years. Dealer notified.
Dodge, Durango, 2002 manufacturer's recall a08. Dealer changed the entire rear end suspension. Which was missing from the NHTSA data base.
While traveling at highway speed the rear end of the vehicle became disconnected, which caused the driver to temporarily loose control of the vehicle. The dealer replaced the rear end of the vehicle.
When the vehicle goes in reverse it makes a clunk. It feeels like it's engaging in 4- wheel. Dealer put in a rear carrier, and new rear end gears. Problem was not remedied, but dealer has order for another part involving linkage for rear end.
This vehicle and all other Durangos are not safe at this speed, to stay on track over un-even road. This can cause sevear accidents on fwy use as I-75 or I-94 in detroit. Please look also at the Ford explore up to the new model which has finaly a indepented rear , therfore a smaller roll-over incedent rate will result. Please contact me for further information.
Rear end of vehicle has been disassembled twice and put back together to correct a gear problem "that has bored out of tolerance. " please provide any additional information/attachments.
