1 Gasoline Engine problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 01/14/2008

Oil sludge has built up in the engine, leaving the engine without the ability to circulate oil through the block to lubricate the parts. A mechanic has diagnosed the problem and noted that driving the car will cause parts to break and the engine to fail. The mechanic took photos of the inside of one of the valve covers to show how thick the oil sludge is. Where the inside of the valve cover should be clean and shiny, it is coated with a half-inch of sludge. The problem occurred at about 121,000 miles. I noticed that the oil-pressure warning light came. A check of the oil showed it was full and clean. Before this incident, I had no problems with the car. It performed very well. With the exception of this significant engine problem, there are no other problems with the car -- no accidents, no dents of body damage, no rust, clean interior and everything else works. Consequences are that an otherwise perfectly good car cannot be driven. It has been parked for two months while I contact the manufacturer, file reports with the appropriate agencies, including the NHTSA and the center of auto safety, and research what can be done and at what cost. My preference, of course, would be that the manufacturer, daimlerchrysler, pay to rebuild or replace the engine. Having the manufacturer admit to a known design flaw, as alleged in hebert v. Daimler Chrysler, would be nice, but not essential. Getting the car back on the road at no cost or minimal cost to me is my goal.

2 Gasoline Engine problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 12/28/2007

I am the original owner of a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. It has 89,000 miles and I have religiously changed the oil and filter every three months since I purchased the vehicle. The night of December 28, 2007 my wife was driving the car home and when she stopped at an intersection the car died. I came and helped her push the car home. The next day I had a mechanic come to the house and he determined that the engine had in fact seized. I have got two different estimates to fix this failure and both are higher than the kelly blue book value of this vehicle. When I contacted Chrysler they referred me to the impartial services group who in turn requested a mountain of information to determine whether my case would be deemed worthy for reimbursement. So far I have heard nothing.

12 Gasoline Engine problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 07/14/2006

1999 2. 7 liter engines used by Dodge fail without warning. This leaves people exposed to high speed traffic on freeways. It also leaves the disabled vehicle on the roadside until it's towed. This makes the vehicle a danger to all that pass by it. The failure rate of these specific engines is excessive. The ntsb should insist that Dodge make an effort to remedy the problem. Dodge has ignored the issue and blamed their customers. Dodge has decreased the margin of safety on our roadways by producing vehicles prone to failure.

I bought this car from my mother which owned the car for little over a year. Oil changes and maintenence was on a regular schedule. On my way home from work about a week ago as I was changing lanes the engine suddenly locked up taking away my brakes and power steering and locking up the transmission while doing about 60 mph on the highway changing lanes. 32 Gasoline Engine problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 02/10/2005

I bought a used 1999 Dodge Intrepid 10-01-03 with 74570 miles. In February 2005 the oil light started coming on when I came to a complete stop. I contacted Dodge and was told there might be a sludge problems and they could try to correct it but would make no promises. I contacted rt clapp where they said that they could work on the car but with that engine it would be better if I could trade it. I would be pouring money down the drain. I called jasper engines and they said they made many rebuilt engines for the 2. 7 model and that would be 4200. 00. I have read on several websites that this 2. 7 engine has many safety issues. I am disabled and cannot afford to trade the car. I am terrified to drive it and it has been sitting in my driveway for over a month now. If I were driving it and it seized up on my I am afraid I would have a heart attack. One if my disabilities is congestive heart failure. I only put 6800 miles on this car in the 18 months that I have owned it. The engine has not failed yet but the oil light coming on when coming to a stop when the oil is full is one of the first indications that the engine is about to go. I wanted to lodge my complaint against Chrysler for making a bad engine and not doing anything about it to protect the safety of the cars owners. Driving on the interstate and having the engine blow is one day going to make a hugh accident but it will not be me because I am too terrified to ever drive this car again and could not try to sell a lemon to another individual.

33 Gasoline Engine problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 02/09/2005

Bought car used from dealership, next day car ran out of gas, guage registered over quarter full, took to dealership, was supposedly "repaired", 5 days later ran out of gas same place on fuel guage(just over a quarter tank), took it to dealership, has been in the shop for 4 days so far, hopefully they'll fix it this time. Much inconvenience, loss of work. But dealership has covered all repairs. Worried about oil sludge problem.

34 Gasoline Engine problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 12/27/2004

While driving my Dodge Intrepid home the engine quit causing me to pull over to the side of the road with no steering and very little braking. I was able to jump start the engine and begin my trip home again. The engine quit again and had trouble steering car off the road with also no brakes. Now the engine will not start due to being locked up. I have changed the oil regularly and maintained the car in good condition. I have had to replace the transmission sensors at 50,000 miles due to failure. The manufacturer service mechanics knew exactly what the problem was when described over the phone about the transmission and the engine. The transmission had a failure again at 100,000 miles. This is terrible for a 99 model car that has only a 100,000 miles. The engine is locked up and now I have no transportation to travel back and forth to work. I have more problems with this car since I bought it.

35 Gasoline Engine problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

I was driving on an errand to tucson arizona which is 65 miles from my home. I stopped at a stop light and the car engine died on me in the middle of a busy intersection without even a warning light coming on. I do regular maintanence on the vehicle, and do predrive checks on the vehicle before I go on long distance trips. The dealership where I bought the vehicle used from told me it would cost $6300 to replace the engine. I do not have $6300 to replace an engine in a vehicle worth about $7000.
