Overheating. I have had a new radiator put in. 2 new thermostats, cooling system flushed twice, new radiator cap, new top and bottom radiator hose, and my car still overheats. I bought this car thinking it would be a good car. But I don't feel safe in this vehicle at all.

Engine coolant: car ran hot without warning. Temperature gage blew off of radiator and coolant exploded all over the engine.
Have a 2003 Dodge Intrepid. Husband driving car home and no lights came on. The car made loud banging type noises and he pulled over. Had car looked at - engine failure. This could've lead to an accident when it first started banging so loudly and we also had a coolant problem that suddenly the hoses popped and anti freeze was lost everywhere - it spewed against the hood and we paid 600 for that , and waiting to hear cost of engine now - mad that Chrysler won't stick behind their vehicles! - will probably cost over 2,000 to fix my car and is causing issues with my job /transportation!.

I was on my way to aldi's and before I pulled up into the parking lot the car shut off and did not start again fluids were running from underneath I had it towed and they told me it was the water pump and the result of that made anti freeze mix with the oil in the engine and I took it to a second mechanic and they said pretty much the same thing except they added that they did a compression test and it failed so it needed to be rebuilt at some point of time .

2004 Dodge Intrepid se car constantly overheats sounds like boiling/gushing sounds coming from the engine which can be felt under driver floor, replaced sensors, thermostat, waterpump, a/c belts, car still runs hot daily.
Water pump failure caused by oil sludge on a 2002 Intrepid seeped water into crankshaft of motor causing further damage to motor. Poor design for water pump.
My car temperature gauge showed it over heating, I pull hood to let air in as I was driving to work, the cooling system never kicked in, and 10 mins later as I pulled into work my car blew up while sitting inside.
I bought my 2004 Dodge Intrepid on April 26, 2009. About a week after buying it the engine light came on and my car started jerking and I had to lift off the gas and push the pedal back down to get going. Ever since this even it did this every once in a while. In July my engine light came on and it shut off completely and I had to push it to the side of the road and it restarted. In August the temperature gauge started to read high and the next day I put new antifreeze in the car and it didn't take. As I was driving down the road for only about 20 mins black clouds started coming out from under the hood and the car turned itself off. Most complaints I have read have been about 2. 7 engines but mine is a 3. 6. The antifreeze reservoir melted off, the timing belt broke, the water pump broke, and 3 different censors need replaced. My car is currently still sitting at the shop because I don't have $857. 00 to fix it. This all happened within 4 months of having the car.
While driving heard bang and car lost power and began to tap. Immediately pulled over and shut car down. Upon inspection found motor was full of anti-freeze. Water pump shaft bearings broke into "pieces" flooding engine with anti-freeze. Installed new water pump and timing chain, but too much damage was already done. Car repair costs too much to fix, have been advised by mechanics that problems will persist with this 2. 7 motor. Additionally, air conditioning fails repeatedly. Power window unit fails repeatedly. Front end problems. We tried to have the problem fixed, but apparently there is no "fix" for this engine.

My daughter was driving home from college when our 2002 Dodge Intrepid engine failed while crossing trolley tracks in our local town.
A/c evaporator, ac receiver dryer, heater core had to be replaced for my 2002 Dodge Intrepid. The car had less than 64,000 miles on it. The repair was extensive as the steering wheel and dash board had to be pulled out. Hours of labor apprx= 8. This was a problem described in the technical service bulletin # 2400204a. Apparently this part has a history of failure. Cost of repair was 897. 00. The main reason for this repair is because the air conditioner stopped working. I really thought we should of been reimbursed by Chrysler for this repair as it was so extensive, and there was so many other complaints pertaining to this part. I researched silent warranties on this problem but could not really turn up anything to help.
I was driving down the street when the engine stopped working. My brakes went out on me and I ended up in the middle of someone's yard, much better then the back end of the car in front of me, but still very scary. I was able to restart the car and get onto the side street before it died for the last time.
I purchased a 2004 Dodge Intrepid in 2006 I brought the car at 71,000 miles the car has 102,000 miles on it that's 15,000 per year . I never really drove the car long distances except to go to work. I just recently had a problem on November 24, 2008 the car cut off on the highway on me took it to the Dodge dealership they said the battery was weak. On Jan 17 the car cut on me in the middle of the street took it to the shop they said the car was over heating and I needed a thermostat. After I got it out on March 15, the car cut off on me again on the highway I pushed it off the ramp to safety called Dodge roadside assistance for help they denied me help stating my warranty expired so I used my last 70 dollars to pay for tow also had to get it towed again to the nearest Dodge dealer because the gas station said that my motor went. When I took it to the dealer they again stated I was beyond my warranty. I had to find my contract ,finding a way to work and dispute my case when I look over my contract I took out an extended warranty and still they denied me. On top of that the 2. 7 engine sucks and I wouldn't dare put another one in there. My car is at the dealership and I don't know what to do .
Heat failed in vehicle approx. Feb. 7,2007 then in March of 2008 car engine failed on the expressway. I had car towed to the dealer that sold me the car and they ordered a new engine. Engine was back ordered and I had to wait over a month for engine. Now I have to return the car because engine is running rough and black smoke is coming out of exhaust pipe when it is started.
The engine failed to turnover during a start. The timing chain is not working and has caused major damage to fuel injectors and the basic functioning of the car. Many things have been changed or repaired on the car but, I always get a check engine light that comes on constantly within minutes or days of a repair. The car sounds like a diesel truck engine when it idles, or is stopped at traffic lights. The belts make lots of whining noises. The car in this respect has cost me lots of $$ and is just sitting in a parking lot undriveable.
I was driving my car and noticed there was not heat. The fan was blowing, but the air was not warm. The day before, the car was running fine. I pulled over and called my husband immediately. I asked me if there were any noises, smoke, strange smells, and if the temperature was fine. I said no to all and that the temperature was fine. He said to drive a little further and see. I drove not even 1/2 mile down the road (myself and my daughter were in the middle of nowhere) and noticed smoke. I pulled over and called my husband again. He asked me if there was any water coming out of the exhaust, no there was not. He asked me to look under the hood and check the water/antifreeze reservoir. The reservoir was empty. He came out immediately and by the time he got there, the motor was all cooled down. He put 2 gallons of water in the reservoir, which seemed to disappear. He checked the oil, and there was water in it. There was not warning! I have maintained my car well and have had 90% of all my work done at the dealership where I bought it. I have done all the recommended work when they have worked on my car. I even had the radiator flushed, transmission flushed, and the serpentine belt replaced because they said it needed it.
I had my car oil changed regularly, while driving 55 mph, I heard a loud knocking sound. I took it to an independent shop, who informed me that the timing chain tensioners broke, after they got the engine apart, it was so sludged up and impossible to fix. Said this was the reason, there was no other warning that something was wrong. My warranty had expired 6 mos. Previously, when I called Chrysler they said it was not their problem. I was lucky to be able to borrow funds to pay $6,000. 00 for a new engine, as I have a physical handicap I require a vehicle, and had this happened in the country , it would have been worse because I cannot walk any distance. The mechanic told me these were a faulty engine and should have maybe had a recall.
Two incidents: October 2007, a 2002 Dodge Intrepid with 2. 7l v6 had an engine cooling failure causing immediate overheating problem on florida highways. The cooling fitting on the top of the engine popped off causing the engine to loose most of it's coolant. Approximate mileage 106,000 this was taken to the dealer for an expensive repair. At the time the dealer did not notify me of the serious problems with this engine, such as sludge oil pump failures. On January 19th, 2009, the engine failed again. At approximately 125,000 miles. The water pump failed, the heads were blown, and probably the sludge oil pump caused this whole sequence of problems that could have been avoided if Dodge made design changes back in 2007. The estimate for replacing the engine is at $6500. Not feasible to repair and I found many complaints about this engine design dating back to 1998 and 1999. Both failures were immediate with little warning to the driver. Thank god no one was injured. Owned by son nick straty.
No events leading up to incident. 2000 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 motor just stopped working while car was moving with no warning. Had towed said it was due to engine sludge. Car was regularly serviced and this shouldn't have happened. I have read all the other 2. 7 horror stories and I expect Dodge to do something about it.
My car initially started overheated got that fixed which was the water pump then the engine blown and I kept regular maintanance on this vehicle got the head gasket fixed then 3 days later the bottom blew and the timing chain tensor.
2001 Dodge Intrepid, I was driving on the freeway when all of a sudden the steering wheel got hard and the car stopped running. . . L had my children with me. . . Luckily when that occurred the freeway was curving and I pulled a side because as I looked left. . . Of course panicked. . . A huge semi truck had just passed me. . . . The freeway merging. . . I just thanked god for that curve. I turned on the car and I heard loud klacking noise. Now the motor is messed up and is costing me an arm and a leg so the car is just sitting there collecting dust.
Engine was running hot
towed into repair shop
said that the valves were burnt and block was cracked.

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. While driving approximately 45 mph, the contact heard a loud rattling noise coming from the front end of the vehicle. While driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle's speed decreased dramatically and the vehicle stalled minutes later. She took the vehicle to a local mechanic and they replaced the timing chain and stated that the entire engine and engine cooling system needed to be replaced. The manufacturer stated that they would only assist if there was sludge in her engine. The powertrain was unknown. The failure mileage was 70,772 and current mileage was 77,000.
The car was running fine and they one day just failed.
I am extremely upset because recently I purchased a Dodge 2002 Intrepid just a little less than a year ago an without any warnings my water pump went out which cause my timing belt to destroy the engine instantly. And I just recently read hundreds of reports of similar incidents. I also was on the freeway at the time in the middle of traffic.
Timing chain and oil pump failed in car oil sludge build up had to replace motor at 140,000 miles maintenance on vehicle done regularly thermostat housing and intake manifold had to be replaced at 160,000 miles vehicle is now leaking antifreeze.
: the contact stated while traveling 70 mph on the highway under normal road conditions, the heater started to blow cold air and then stalled. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who determined that a valve, connected with the timing chain blew out and that the engine would need to be replaced. The contact found similar complaint via the web. Compliant # 10099639 about the engine and engine cooling. The vehicle has not been replaced or repaired.
While driving, the car suddenly stopped. It wasn't until after the car stopped in the middle of the road that any of the gauges seemed to indicate any problems. There was no warning! this was a country road so there wasn't much traffic, but had there been, it would have been disastrous. The water pump suddenly quit working. In order to correct the problem, I am currently spending $1,000 to replace the pump! the car only has 67,000 miles!.
My car was towed to dealer on a Wednesday and radiator was replaced, after getting the car back on Friday evening, sat. The car overheated again and had to be towed. After called numerous times to find out the problem I was told the motor blew and they were trying to find a replacement. I was told I must have run the car hot. The car should not have run hot if a new radiator was installed the day before. Now I am stuck with a car payment and no car.
I was driving with my daughter ( she was driving my car a 2002 Dodge Intrepid with 2. 7 liter engine), and with no warning the thermostat began to rise. It was a certified used car and I did not have any problems with the car until this occurred. The car began to steam under the hood and cut off. My daughter steered the car over to the curb of a very narrow street hoping it would start. I called a nearby garage to take the car there if it started, after the engine cooled we crept the car to the garage. My daughter reminded about her Chrysler sebring with the 2. 7 liter defective engine and how it stopped dead on she and her husband at night at a green light because of sludge. When we arrived at the garage, the owner looked at the car after it cooled. He said that the engine was about to go and that I need to take it back to the people who I made it to have them fix it or trade it. I asked if the problem was from engine tampering, as I had tried to trade it earlier at another dealer and the tech said that the engine had been tampered with before I bought the car at kernersville Chrysler Dodge. He did not know, but that in his opinion short of them putting in a new engine, this will happen again. Kernersville Chrysler Dodge refused to acknowledge any responsibility and would not trade the car nor offered to repair it. I am a 65 year old woman who has had open heart surgery this year and do not need the aggravation. I am paying for insurance and making car payments on a car that cannot be used and sitting in my driveway. Need the stress. No body wants this car as a trade. If I sell it myself the bank said they would still consider it a repo. Chrysler Dodge can have the car back, but I do not think it is fair or right for me to be penalized for their defective engine. They should take the car and call it even. The Chrysler Dodge company and tim mitchell at kernersville Chrysler Dodge should be ashamed.
: the contact stated while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to a dealership, where it was determined the pump for the cooling system failed. This caused water to get into the engine, therefore, the engine must be replaced. Also, the brakes warped causing vibration in the front end. The vehicle was not seen by a mechanic for this and neither problem was repaired.
: the contact stated while driving 50 mph, the vehicle lost speed, and stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to a private repair shop, who determined that the water pump had failed, causing water and antifreeze to leak into the engine.
Engine sludge, cooling system problems. Was driving and without warning Intrepid shut down. I was told this was the timing chain.
Vehicle overheated while going down the road. Took the vehicle to the dealer they changed the oil, thermostat and housing. Then a week later was driving the highway and the motor blew out. The vehicle was back at the dealer. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who would not assist in the cost of the repair. This happened on August 4, 2005.
