2 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 03/20/2012

Purchased vehicle 01/30/12,test drove, checked fluids, made sure everything was working fine. Seller said he just had oil change and smog 1 month prior, he provided me documents confirming. Had no issues with vehicle, until about 03/20/12,the oil light came on, which was odd. I checked the oil, found it was completely empty, put 2 quarts in immediately, light went off. I started checking driveway daily for signs of oil leaking even though the car drove fine. 03/28/12, car stalled, went completely dead, as I exited freeway, leaving myself and my 3yr. Old stuck in lane on off ramp for about 30 minutes. A passerby attempted to jump it,that didn't work, car had no power at all,we pushed it to a safer spot. I walked 2 blocks home. Came back next day, jumped it,it started but now there was a knocking sound coming from engine and oil light was back on. I checked the oil it read full,I drove car home it stalled 3 times in the 2 blocks home. Knocking sound continued I parked the car. The next day I took the car to my mechanic the oil light was still on the engine was still knocking. He checked oil again and confirmed the car did have oil,and detected no signs of leaking. He ran a diagnostic on engine, it detected no issues,he ran it again, and the results where the same. He drove the car,me in the passengers seat so he could get a hear the knocking sound when car was moving. Backed out of lot driving about 10 to 12 mph, we got maybe half a block and the car went dead. He was able to guide car to side of road, when he pressed the brake to put the car in park, there was a barely audible bursting sound. We got out and found a thick black muddy type substance gushing out of the bottom from the front end, leaving a puddle the length and width of car. He immediately identified it as oil sludge, and said my engine had blown. We discussed my options and ultimately I had to have the car towed home it hasn't started.

3 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2003 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 10/25/2011

While driving to work the car lost power and acceleration several times and finally made a loud clanking banging sound. It stalled and completely stopped about a minute after the sounds. I had the car towed to my mechanic's shop and he said the engine had seized due to oil sludge build-up and that the engine would have to be replaced. He also stated that this was a familiar occurrence with this specific engine, the 2. 7l v6. Dodge is aware of the problem with their product and will do anything they can to avoid taking responsibility for their defective product.

4 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2004 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 08/06/2010

Friday August 6th I ran a few errands after work, then on the way back my car started making a banging noise. I traveled a little further then the noise became louder and louder, so I pulled over. I called my boyfriend who came in about 15 minutes and he checked under the hood. We found out that we could not get a reading on the oil stick when checking it. We took the car over to be checked by a mechanic. I seems like the oil was sludge/thick; now this is considering I got a complete oil change June 27, 2010. . . This incident happened August 6th. Now my mechanic says that I need a new engine. I have been diligent with the maintenance on my car. I get regular oil changes and other things that's needed for my car. I have not had any real problems up until now. I have recently bought new tires, I have also had to have the alternator and battery replaced, but nothing like this. Since this has happened I have read 100's of complaints concerning Dodges 2. 7 engines. They are notorious for doing just what my engine has done. With no warning the engine is gone. Dodge refuses to recall these engines that could very well cause major, major damage to lives. What a tragedy!.

5 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

I bought this car from my brother-in-law about 5 months ago. I changed the oil less then 3,000 miles ago. I began noticing some weird engine noise over the last week. The sound got alot worse today on a 30 mile trip to pick up my 3 year old daughter from her grandma's house. The car began making a loud banging or knocking sound when you let off of the gas while driving. The car then just died while driving down the road. Luckily, I was able to pull the car over without any problems, but who knows what would have happened if I was driving on the highway. I had the car towed to my house. I tried to start it at home and it would turn over and start, but it sounds like the engine has rocks or something in it and only idles for a second or two before dieing again. I hope that this problem has some way of getting fixed and that the ways you described really do help. I am now left with only one car to share with my wife and try to find a way to get to my full time job and my classes (I am also attending classes 4 days a week). I have always heard about the problems with the 2. 7 liter engine, but I thought they were just horror stories that were always told as "I know this guy who had problems with that engine" or "those engines are junk, and its only a matter of time before mine will blow". I really didn't expect this to happen because not even 3000 miles earlier I changed the oil and it was clean. I also drove the car up north which was a 3hr drive each way. No problems and the bang, knock, crunch its all over.

11 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2002 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 11/27/2008

I own a 2002 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7l engine. The car only has 45,850 original miles. At times it will make a knocking noise that will eventually go away. I was told that the 2. 7l has a problem with sludge buildup causing vital internal engine parts not to become lubricated. I have my oil changed every 1500 to 3000 miles and have only driven it 23,000 miles since buying it in 2006 I have taken it to several repair shops , but most mechanics refuse to work on it because of the so called sludge problem and the high cost of the repairs. Some suggested using full synthetic oil to combat the problem. Others have stated that the only solution is to replace the engine completely. I have also questioned Chrysler as to any recalls for the 2. 7l Intrepid but no answer. I have also noticed that there are several complaints about this problem across north America. If Chrysler knew this was a problem with these engines, they should have informed us the consumers and taken actions to correct it. I think they decided to keep their mouth shut and flood our country with a worthless product. Chrysler needs to own up to this defect. I have been a loyal customer of Dodge for many years but is fading fast when it comes to american made vehicles.

23 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 02/29/2008

There have been several problems with my 2000 Intrepid 2. 7l. I have had to replace all the door lock motors at different times, starting all the way back from 1/8/04 and the final one was just this month (February. ) I was having an issue with the car stalling out while I was driving it. Some times it would start back up while it was still coasting, other times it would take a long time before it would start again, leaving me sitting on the side of the road. When hooked up to a diagnostic machine it would not show what caused the malfunction. My mechanic had to change random censors until we found the correct one. Which turned out to be the crank sensor. This problem was occurring around February/March of 2007, with only 60,121 mileage when the first one was replaced. Then this past Wednesday, 2/27/08, the engine started to make a knocking sound. We thought maybe it was due to the extremely cold weather we were having. It did not due it after the car was heated up. When I was driving home from picking up my kids today, Friday 2/29/08, the engine started knocking very loudly and lost power. I did make it to my driveway but just barely. I still owe quite a bit for the car and now I don't have anything to drive and can't even trade the vehicle in. After searching the internet to try to find a replacement engine I have found that this is a very common thing with this engine. I have 73,945 miles on the car.

26 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 12/12/2007

Our car started making knocking noises during acceleration. We immediately took it in to a auto shop to have it looked at. The engine is blown and will cost more than the car is worth to fix it, approximately $5,000. The car has only 88k miles on it, has had regular oil changes. Apparently, the engines used in this particular car have the tendency to produce engine oil sludge, ruining the engine oftentimes well before 100k miles. That was what the mechanic told us and what we have since found doing research on the problem. We ended up having to sell the car for scrap because we cannot afford to fix it.

27 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2003 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 12/06/2007

The contact owns a 2003 Dodge Intrepid. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard a knocking sound in the engine. When the vehicle reached 2 rpm, the knocking became louder. 28 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2003 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 11/17/2007

My car had loss of power and yet it seemed ok except my gas mileage was not so good, and with no warning, no check engine light, or anything, I heard a really loud knocking noise in my engine and I had almost no power, I took it to a shop and they told me I have a rod knocking and I need a new engine. My car is a 2003 Dodge Intrepid, I have had it only a year, and I owe $9,000 on it still.

30 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 10/25/2007

While driving my 2000 Dodge Intrepid to work on a busy interstate, I noticed a loud knocking noise coming from the engine and the accelerator not responding properly. The engine then started bucking and racing while I tried to wrestle it to the next exit. The car got as far as the end of the exit ramp before it stopped running and would not restart. The vehicle was then towed to a local repair shop. Later that day, I was informed by the owner of the shop that the timing chain broke, resulting in bent valves and the engine needing replacement at a cost of approximately $4000!! I just finished paying off the vehicle in September. With only 69,000 miles and the manufacturers routine maintenance schedules adhered to, this vehicle's engine should not have failed this early in the game.

31 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2002 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 10/20/2007

2002 Dodge Intrepid engine failure from oil sludge. Driving down the street and the car started making knocking sound and started bogging out. Took it to dealer who said the engine needed to be replaced which will cost $6100. 00. Chrysler said that we would have to pay a $2500. 00 deductible since the car was out of warranty. We bought the car in 2003 with 19,000 miles on it from a dealer and the car now only has 53,000 miles on it. Chrysler needs to own up to this. There is hundreds of complaints on this very same problem. Please make them issue a recall on this 2. 7l engine. Toyota did with less complaints.

32 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 09/06/2007

Need assistance in repair to my 2000 Dodge Intrepid. I was told about the lawsuit against Chrysler caused by bad engines. My Intrepid has a 2. 7 liter engine. I was current on all my oil changes, it started off smoking all the time even after oil changes, knocking noises, also experienced bad driver side window. The lawsuit was told to me by a mechanic, and was also stated that Chrysler would reimburse the value of the car, or repair car need to hear from someone ASAP!!!! thank you.

33 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 09/05/2007

I got a loan on a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. It has been nothing but expense after expense. It didn't want to start, so I took to a Dodge service place. They said it was a crank shaft positioning sensor, which cost me $582. 00 to have it fixed. Two weeks later it didn't want to start again. They said it was the cam shaft sensor, which cost me another $284. 00 to have it fixed. Each time that the Dodge service department had the car, they supposedly did a 24 point inspection after fixing it, and it passed the inspection both times. So, a week and a half later, there was some really loud knocking sounds coming from the motor. The Dodge service place said that the whole lower unit on the engine is shot, so it needs either an overhaul or a new motor. I got some quotes over the phone to either fix the motor or replace the motor with a new motor. For overhauling the motor, which includes parts and labor, they want at least $4300. 00. To put a new motor in they want $4600. 00. I bought the car used for over $7000. 00, not including the finance and interest charges. Now in order to fix the car, I would have to pay out a whole lot more than half of what the car cost to begin with. The Dodge service places say that the 2. 7 motors are not made well, because they have too small of an opening for the oil to be dispersed correctly throughout the engine. My Intrepid only has 102,000 miles on it. So I am stuck paying for a car that cannot be driven, unless I want to be stranded somewhere. I still owe on the car, so I am paying payments and keeping insurance on a car I cannot afford to fix. Shouldn't there be a warning somewhere on these vehicles, about the chances of sludge build up causing the engine to fail? shouldn't Dodge stand behind their vehicles, and put some kind of recall on these motors? what are people like me to do? am I just suppose to pay and pay on a car that I would have to drive at my own risk, of the engine failing at any given moment?.
