We are writing to let you know of a major car fire that occurred in our Dodge Intrepid. The driver was driving on the interstate. The hot/cold needle began moving up and down. Then the brakes gave out. Then, the power steering gave out. The car started smoking producing black chemical smoke into the cabin. Then, fire started shooting out of the vents. With no brakes and fire and smoke into the car, the driver was forced to jump out of the vehicle and roll onto the middle of the interstate with the car still going 30-40 mph. The driver was in extreme danger inside the car and obviously laying on the interstate as well. The car ended up in the ditch while completely engulfed in flames. He was able to get onto the shoulder of the road. The fire department arrived to put out the fire. They determined the fire started inside the area of the heating core. The fire was so hot that it melted the bolts we were told by the fire marshal. There obviously was something faulty with the heater core to give this much damage. The driver was treated at the er for smoke inhalation. The contents in the car were either burned, melted, or have severe smoke damage. The vehicle is a complete loss of course. We lost many items of value inside the vehicle. We would like to be reimbursed for the car, the damaged or destroyed contents and any medical bills.

An oil plug front left of engine block blew out pumping oil onto catalytic converter. Open flames melted wheel well, back bumper, and fuel hoses off of gas tank. Fire went out went all the oil was pumped out of engine and car stopped moving. I contacted Chrysler safety, they referred me to Dodge customer care; they initially created a case #31892226 but then sent a letter saying they were not responsible because the car was out of a three-year warranty period and also unspecified environmental factors. Although my wife and son were almost immolated, it wasn't important enough for them to check into. The car remains parked at a local garage awaiting investigation.

The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Intrepid. The contact stated that fuel fumes were emitting in and around the vehicle. After inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that fuel was leaking from the top of the engine and the check warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 145,000.

I was driving along and the engine just stopped. No warning lights came on, no sudden noises, etc. I was driving the car approx. 25 minutes when this happened. I was able to pull off the road and have the car towed.

Car suddenly stopped while on the expressway at 60 miles an hour. I hear this is not unusual but seems to be a frequent compliant about this car. If so many people have this problem it should have been recalled for safety factors. But I am sure the big car company will not allow any of this to come to fruition and focus on the safety of the consumer.

I bought the car for 1500$ the inspection ran out at the end of that month, inspection was completed as a "lickem stickem" the car 2 weeks later was determined by an outside mechanic unsafe to drive and hazardous to public safety, car was left at place of purchase for two (2) weeks in which time nothing was done to correct the issue car remains unsafe to drive and not running.

The vehicle was not taken into the dealer for a diagnostic testing, the manufacturer had not been notified at this time. No repairs had been made, the failure mileage 129,000. Lnc.

The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Intrepid. The contact stated that while having repairs on the vehicle, she was advised by the technicians that the valve gasket was covered in oil sludge. The mechanic advised that the valve gasket cover needed to be cleaned and the oil needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. I was told my motor 2. 7 was totaled because of sludge.

I bought my Dodge Intrepid in June of 2010 knocking in the engine I have never ran the car over 55 mph no warning lights came on kept car up to date on maintenance oil changing and everything else checked oil it was out had it changed 2 weeks ago and also when I added more oil in the car the oil came up on dip stick very sludgy found out I need a new engine by a mechanic.

I have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. 2. 7l engine. The oil light came on and stayed on and now the engine is ticking. I was driving and then the car just cut off. The oil dip stick was at the right level.

Loud pop and a huge cloud of steam came out of the grill and around the hoods. I could not see through the cloud of steam for a couple of seconds. I was told that this happens often on Chrysler autos. ( connector valve ).

Due to engine sludge in my 2002 Dodge Intrepid the engine has locked up and needs to be replaced. Many other complaints and issues with this engine. Very unfair to the consumer not to correct the defects of this engine.

The Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 motor is a bad motor, I have already had it rebuilt one time and now it appears that I am going to have to have it done again. Everyone I have spoken to about this car tells me the motors are bad. I feel that this needs to be investigated. If I had know this I would not have bought this car.

My car has very low mileage and it just suddenly started coughing and choking and revving up and slowing down - it was completely out-of-control! I had to pull over on a major freeway (interstate 5 in oregon) and waited on the side for a tow. When I got it home I was told to drive it a couple of blocks to get the engine analyzer on it, but it sounded horrible, the valves were knocking fiercely and it sounded like it was out of oil, which I check frequently. The guy that checked it really didn't have much of an answer except a relay switch. We replaced it but to no avail. I took it to a local mechanic and he wanted about $4500 to replace the engine - where they found metal shavings and some sort of bolt that they couldn't get to down in the valve. I cannot afford to replace anything on this car and I am amazed and disgusted that Chrysler would put this kind of engine out to the public. I have read hundreds of complaints now about the 2. 7 l engine - with people in the same predicament. And it's not just online - I have a neighbor with one that has the alternative engine and he's heard the same thing. His car runs great because he doesn't have the 2. 7l. . . . Chrysler should pick up the pieces for all these poor people who have faulty cars and at least replace the value of their car as it stands today. Please help.

I would like to file a complaint on the 2000 Dodge Intrepid, 2. 7l engine. I had a front end crash with no apparent engine damage. When the cosmetics were repaired and I cranked the engine again the oil light came on and it was not running smoothly. Oil light goes on and off at times and now has knock in engine. I blame this on a design flaw in the oil galleys of the 2. 7 engine.

I was driving my 2001 Dodge Intrepid se and with no warning the heat went out and the car began to smoke and cut off and I had to coast over to the side of the road on a dark road and wait till the engine cooled down. It took about fifteen minutes before the car started again. I just purchased this car in July and it died on me in November. The engine is a 2. 7 and is known for these issues. I took the car to a mechanic and they told me that the antifreeze is mixing with the oil,the headgasket is gone and he gives it a month before the motor goes. Hello my name paula howard. My 2000 Dodge Intrepid just died while driving the other day. I called my husband, when he lifting the hood of my car there was steam coming out of the engine. He then checked the oil and saw antifreeze in the oil. I have since taken the car back to my dealership since I have owned the car for less than a year. They of course will not touch it or warranty it. They want a lot of money to even look at it. I started researching and found that I am by far not the only person with this problem. Can you help?.

I was just driving my 2001 Dodge Intrepid to work on the highway. No indication what so ever of engine problems. Cold air started to run through the heater vents inside the car, then I had no acceleration. I looked in the rearview mirror and saw white grayish coming out the rear and front of car. I pulled over immediately, but it was too late. I had the car towed to my mechanic and he told me the engine had blown and failed a compression test. I never had a problem with this engine before and always changed the appropriate fluids. I bought a used car and my Intrepid is still sitting broken in my driveway.

Engine & oil light repeatedly came on. Idled low and would cut off. I was in the middle of traffic and car just cut off when I attempted to slow. Car behind me almost hit me and man had road rage. Luckily the car restarted and got me into my apt complex where it cut off for the last time. I had completed oil changes as recommended and was told there was no problem. This is a common problem as stated per guy that attempted to look at the car. Now I need a motor on a car that is barely worth the value of the car. There may not have been an accident or death, but this is too common a problem for Dodge to ignore.

He waited two hours before the vehicle managed to restart and then drove it to a mechanic. The contact was informed that the oil reservoir was full of coolant and antifreeze, which was common for his type of vehicle. He took the vehicle to another shop and was informed of the same thing, including that the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer stated that they were not responsible for the defect. In 2007 I bought a 1998 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 l engine. . . . Nonetheless the engine blew. The car had regular oil changes and maintenance. It gave no warning that there were any signs of engine trouble. I paid $6995 for the car, it had 67,000 miles on it. . . . . 2yrs later at 87,000 it died. . . . Leaving me to pay the rest of the loan of $2200 on a car that just sits in the driveway!!!.

The contact later received notification of a manufacturers recall for the power control module. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for updates to the computer but no other repairs were made to the catalytic converter. The dealer refused repairs and advised that the component could not be repaired under the recall. The contact believed that the computer caused the catalytic converter to malfunction and the contact stated that the manufacturer should be responsible for repairs to the entire system because the initial defect caused the failure. The vehicle was not further repaired. The failure mileage was 105,000.

2000 Dodge Intrepid motor failure due to oil sludge buildup despite regular oil changes.

My 2002 Dodge Intrepid stopped running while I was headed uphill in traffic I managed to make it to the side of the road my mechanic towed it and ran a diagnostic check on it which cam back cam sensor and crankshaft sensor . . . Replaced both. . Car still wont start. . Was told that I possibly flooded the spark plugs while trying to restart it. . . Replaced spark plugs. . . Car still wont start after further investigation was told that the 2. 7 engine is defective and needs to be replaced which if I can find a decent used engine will be atleast $3500 but I cannot find a used Dodge Intrepid engine because they are all bad! I still owe more than $2000 on the car and cannot afford a new engine. . I am behind on payments because I have no transportation to work. . . Or to the grocery store. . Or the doctor or to my 3 kids school for that matter.

A report was filed with the manufacturer and they sent out an investigator, who concluded that they were not responsible for the failure. However, the fire department report stated that the fire was caused by a faulty gas line because the wires were not damaged. The fire department report number was unknown. The vehicle will not be repaired. The failure mileage was 80,000.
