1999 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 motor. After replacing the motor in 2006 35 days after buying it lasted till about sept of 2008. Had to put in all new timing chain kit. Car ran for about a week and then broke down again. Had a mechanic look at it and now the right rear rod is shot. With all the money I have put into this car I think I should of just parked it at daimler Chrysler and put a sign on it saying what a piece of !@#$%. Cannot get anything for it trading it in all dealers know about this issue and want noting to do with it.

This is a basic vehicle complaint that I feel Dodge/Chrysler should be made to fix on their 2. 7l engines. I and after searching the internet have found that many people are having the same problem with this problem with their 2000 Dodge Intrepid and the company is doing nothing to help fix it when it is a known issue with the engine. Other mechanics have said the same thing. I think that some authority should look into this and have them recall this engine. People pay a lot of money for their vehicles and need them to work.

2001 Dodge Intrepid. The motor started to knock at start up for a couple of seconds then after about two weeks the engine dies two blocks from home. Got home and it started with a very loud squealing coming from the bottom of the motor. It has 137,000 miles and I am pretty sure it is a crank bearing. I use synthetic and change the oil every 3,000 miles.
Engine and transmission and a/c failure of Dodge Intrepids.
I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid and have had the oil sending unit pressure switch and a few other things replaced on my vehicle and yet the oil light still comes on in my vehicle and I can't keep affording to take it in to a shop and I maintain the oil changes before the 3000 miles if not exactly on the 3000 miles. I would really like to find out if they have any kind of recall on this type of situation.
I replaced an engine in a 2002 Dodge Intrepid last year and I am replacing one again this year. This engine is less than 80,000 miles and now the engine has locked up again. I am researching and finding other consumers are having engine problems with Dodge Intrepids. This is very costly!.

The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. While driving between 65-70 mph, the contact's son noticed smoke coming from the vehicle. He attempted to pull over, but the brakes malfunctioned and would not stop properly. The contact was forced to coast to a stop. He exited the vehicle and notified the police. Flames began to appear from under the engine and hood. The police and fire departments arrived, stabilized the fire, and towed the vehicle. The insurance company then towed the vehicle to their salvage yard to investigate. The contact has still not heard back from the insurance company. A police report was filed. The current and failure mileages were 130,400.
I own a 2002 Dodge Intrepid. . . I have to replace the motor. . . It only has 76,000 and Dodge will not do anything about it. . .
Engine was running slow and lacked power. Took it to local shop and come to find out the engine is trashed. Its a 2003 Dodge Intrepid with 84k miles, 2. 7 engine. Owned it for 21 months to be exact. Was told this happens alot with these models, and he's fixed 6 of these cars with the same engine. As of the moment we are trying to get money together ($3000) to replace the motor with a 3. 2/3. 5l engine. Dodge dealerships were of no help.
Purchased car last week (April of 08'). On my way home ( 100mi drive) from picking up car the motor started knocking then locked up in the middle of the interstate. Had to have car towed back to my dads house and are now trying to sale the car we just bought. It will be hard to sale a car with a locked up motor.
My 02 Dodge 2. 7 l timing has failed. Since almost all have the same problem why Chrysler does not have a recall ? that's what I call rip off.

On Sunday March 9th 2008 I was on the freeway about 10-15 miles from my house and my car just died I got it off the freeway safely and everything seemed fine I let it cool down checked the fluids and started it back up once started a loud knocking was coming from the engine and I got it back on the freeway and it died again made it to the shoulder and then had it towed to my house . Went out tonight March 11, 2008 and checked the oil dipstick and to my surprise sludge not oil or water just sludge. . . . . I did a google search to look up head gaskets for a 2004 Dodge Intrepid and had thousands of hits about the 2. 7l engine having this problem wow now I wish I never got this car!!!.
I have 2001 Dodge Intrepid. I have been experiencing a oil loss. . I have to add oil once a month for last 4 months. I have no ideal where the oil is going, neither does any mechanic that looks at my car know. . .
My car seized on route 3 in PA on my way to take daughter to see surgeon on her first trip allowed to be sitting in a car to get her staples removed after major back surgery. The oil light came on and within 2 seconds the car shrugged twice and died. With no warning beside the 2 second interval of the oil light I lost all steering and braking abilities to get my car safely off roadway. This was especially scary because it was the first day she was allowed to sit in a car and only to see her surgeon. I am told by my mechanic that my timing chain is bad and it is impossible to replace, they are on back order because so many people have had the same problem. My Dodge dealership told me they are unaware of anyone else having a problem with timing chains at all. My car is undrivable, useless, crushing blow for a single parent of 3 kids.
I drove a 2002 2. 7 Dodge Intrepid. One day I was driving down I-5, (the main highway) and my car started to over heat right away to the red and was blowing cold air. I was by myself and pulled over as far as I could. I pulled over as far as I could but my car was still in the lane. I waited a little while until my car cooled down, about 1 hour. I tried to drive it to the gas station to use a phone to call my dad. I finally got a hold of someone to come tow me home. The next day my dad had fixed the thermostat thinking this would help. Um. . . . . No! my car started to blow cold air again. I was driving then all of a sudden my car just stopped on the freeway. I was not even able to pull over at all!!! my car just started to slow down and I couldn't even turn my wheel. I had to call the police department and let them know that I was in the freeway and was scared to cause an accident. They came and blocked the road and pushed me to the side of the freeway. This is the worst experience that has ever happened to me in my life!!!!! my dad looked at the car and checked the oil and all he could see was sludge everywhere. I am still making payments on my car and I still have it in my yard. This is a waste of money and do not feel that this is something I should be paying for. Its just been sitting there and after reading all these complaints I cannot believe that Dodge is still selling these cars and putting peoples lives in danger daily! I looked online for ways to stop people from buying these cars and found this site. I really hope something happens with these cars. Atleast stop selling them!!! if anyone has any advise as to what to do or how to fix my car without spending more than my car costs please help me! thank you.
Blown motor 2. 7 liter Dodge Intrepid just bought from large Dodge dealership 28 days ago.
The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 40 mph the vehicle began loosing power and slowing down. The contact was able to safely maneuver the vehicle to the emergency lane. No warnings lights illuminated when the failure occurred. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was determined that the motor failed and the repair cost would be $7,000. No repairs have been made. The manufacturer informed the contact to take the vehicle a different dealer to be inspected. The failure mileage was 78,000.
I purchased a 2004 Dodge Intrepid with 26,000 mile for approx 20,000. I started the car one day and drive 5 minutes away to my sons school when I heard a loud knocking. I immediately called our local Dodge dealer who scheduled me an appointment for 6 weeks away. I stopped driving the car immediately. On Jan 2nd I took the car in to see what the issue was. It is now April 9 and I was informed today that the car needs a new engine due to sludge and my warranty was denied by Chrysler. Even though I provide proof of maintenance for the whole 40,000 miles I put on the car the district manager for Chrysler said my receipts were not verifiable and they were done in a actual car repair shop. I've been without a car now for 5 months and still owe 8,000 on the loan. The car has 68,000 thousands miles and Chrysler says to bad so sad.
The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. While driving at an unknown speed, the engine sputtered. The contact drove to a gas station and turned off the vehicle. When she attempted to restart it, there was no power. The vehicle was towed to a Dodge dealer. The dealer would not provide her with a rental vehicle to drive while they had her vehicle. The transmission type was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 73,000.
1999 Dodge Intrepid engine seized up without warning.
Engine blew up.
Chrysler Intrepid would lose all power while driving.
We bought a 2000 Dodge Intrepid, used, has 112k miles on it. Engine is ticking, about to blow a rod. My husband is a mechanic, he did some research on the engine and found the problem to be sludge build up. Jumped online and found tons of issues with these 2. 7l engines. I've emailed, called, written letters to Chrysler / Dodge and have had no luck obtaining a response back from them. I think it's ridiculous that they created a disposable car. According to the previous owners, the engine began having heating problems, then the noise began around 95k, the parked the car and put it up for sale. That's when we bought it. We had planned on fixing it and then having another family vehicle. Now that we realize we'll have to sink about $2,000 or more into it, we're not happy.
Driving around doing errands, heading to the next town (15 miles) to finish my errands and my engine started to overheat. I turned around and went to the service station that was only about 1/2 mile away and had them look at the car. I had no previous problems with it overheating. It ended up being a cracked block. I needed to get a different engine because it was to expensive to repair the original one.
In July of 2007 I bought a 1999 Dodge Intrepid for my daughter's first car. I paid 3,000. 00 for it from an elderly lady in town. Within 2 months the timing chain snapped and wound itself around inside the engine and blew through the cam cover. It was towed to a service station and the engine was taken apart. I was told that the 2. 7 l engines are noted for overheating causing oil sludge to build up and the timing chains to break. I was also told it would cost me 4400. 00 to replace the engine with a used one. Updated 12-12-07. Updated.
After starting the car the engine, it began to make a "rattle" noise that went away after a few seconds. Took it into a shop and they said nothing was wrong. 9 months later, the car would not start -> the dealership said the engine would need to be replaced (the car has ~72,000 miles). I now need to either buy a new engine, or sell it for parts (the cost of the repair will nearly equal the value of the vehicle. I would not have expected to replace a 2000 Dodge Intrepid engine so early. From what I can tell, many other people have had the same problem with this Chrysler engine: what are my options?.
My 2001 Dodge Intrepid blew due to sludge buildup under 100,000 miles. While driving it the temp. Light came on. On the way to the hospital to have our baby. We turned on the heater to cool the engine down but no heat came out. Then my car died smoke was rolling out the back.
