2 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

My car overheated on the expressway traveling 60 mph and completely shut down. I was lucky to have not been killed. I have replaced the crankshaft, crankshaft sensor, and water pump. My car stalls/hesitates every time I stop at a light. My mechanic has informed me the Cadillac converter is shot, I need a new timing belt and my engine is full of sludge. The air conditioning stopped working about 3 years ago, recharging the system does not work.

3 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 07/25/2009

The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 35 mph, the driver heard a loud knocking sound coming from the engine compartment in the vehicle. When the contact approached a red light and came to a complete stop, the vehicle suddenly stalled. She attempted to restart the vehicle, but the engine failed to start. The vehicle was towed back to the contact's residence, where it currently remains. Two mechanics came to her home and stated that the timing chain needed to be replaced. She was informed that the failure was common for her year, make, and model vehicle. The vehicle has not yet been repaired and is currently parked at the contact's residence. The current and failure mileages were 88,596.

4 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 06/20/2009

On June 4, 2009 I paid my 2001 Dodge Intrepid off. On June 20, 2009 while traveling on the interstate I heard my car making a knocking sound. As I pulled over to get off on the exit the car died and I almost lost control of the vehicle as I came off the exit. I had to put the car in park to get it to stop. This is scary being that my young children were in the vehicle with me. On yesterday the mechanic has advised me the engine is gone. I've had the oil sending unit replaced, the timing, the cam and crankshaft sensor, the water pump, the serpentine belt, not to mention the $600 just spent about 2 weeks ago to have the ac fixed. When the oil light first began to flicker the mechanic advised me that this would be the outcome. Something needs to be done about this!.

5 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 02/15/2009

The 2000 Dodge Intrepid all at once would not start. I came out of the grocery store and it had a weird "clicking sound". My mechanic said the timing belt broke. He said that this model is notorious for this, that the oil reservoir gets clogged no matter the maintenance and that the breaking of the timing belt ruins the engine, unlike other cars that have safety measures to prevent engine failure. The oil can no longer reach the top of the engine and it burns up breaking the timing belt. The oil level when checked was fine. A full tune up was done on the car just a few months before, same mechanic. The new engine, because Dodge does not sell the old one any more, I wonder why, is $5400. I still owe $4500. On this car. Dodge, from what I gather on the net, has thousands in class action suits over this. They will not change out the engines for us or recall of any kind. This car was sold to me off a lot, the guy took me right to it. I bit. I'm !@#$%. There is no correcting the problem. I don't have the money to fix Dodges' way of making millions off the consumer. We will not buy american again. And yet they will go to the senate and ask for more money to get out of their jam. I say let them sink until they make a better product. Every other business out there has to learn and do the same in America, why not them??!!!! why are they not held accountable??!!!! I hope my words make a difference. Sincerely,.

6 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 01/07/2009

My 2000 Dodge Intrepid wouldn't start without a jump for a few days in a row, so I brought it in and had it checked. The mechanic said he thought it was due to build up on the negative terminal. I also heard a noise in the engine, but all belts were checked and they were fine. 1 week later my car just died while I was driving to work. I have now learned that I need to replace the engine at a large cost. While researching the cost of this repair, I have come to learn that this is a very common problem for the 2. 7l v6 engine, and that the maker is aware of the problem, but because there have not been enough complaints, it is not worthy of addressing! I am disgusted! the way that my car died, on the road, I could have caused a major accident.

7 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 12/01/2008

I bought this 2000 Dodge Intrepid, v-6, 2. 7 liter engine, new from a dealer in December, 1999. In 2003, with less than 40,000 miles on it, the engine seized up. The dealer contacted Chrysler, and the engine was replaced as if it had been under extended warranty. Interestingly, the dealership found no indication of excessive sludge buildup, which apparently is the basis of most complaints about this engine. I paid about $200, and was satisfied at that point. Since then, I've had lots of (relatively minor) repairs done on this car, and I would rate it below average for reliability. The car now has about 81,000 miles on it, which means the current engine has about 41,000 miles. The engine has failed again. The only warning was an intermittent (not consistent) clicking sound, which my mechanic felt was coming from the housing over the front part of the engine (where the timing gear/belt is located). Thus far, Chrysler has not responded to my request for coverage as if it were under warranty. I have reviewed many of the on-line complaints about the 2. 7 liter engine; I have talked to at least three local (non-dealership) mechanics, each of whom was familiar with sudden catastrophic failures of the 2. 7 engine, and one of whom said he personally knew of seven such failures in this local area. None of those independent mechanics would touch this repair job. This is probably an $8,000 repair job, if I choose to have it repaired. It makes no economic sense, when the trade-in value of the car is less than $2,000. Even if I replace the engine (again) I would not sell this car to another individual without describing the problems with the engine. I've read enough, and heard enough, to believe that Chrysler should be forced to initiate some sort of replacement and compensation program, at least for those of us who bought our vehicle new, have owned it continuously, have maintained it properly, have not abused it in any way, but can't afford to prosecute a lawsuit.

8 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 10/19/2008

I have changed the oil in the vehicle regularly every 3-4 thousand miles, then on Sunday the timing belt tensioner went out and now the repair shop tells me I need a new engine and it's due to the tensioner failing from a sludge build up. I have since found this is very common to the 2. 7l engine. Now the repair estimate is between five and six thousand dollars.

9 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 04/19/2008

The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. If the contact does not drive the vehicle before it warms up, it will shut off. Once the timing chain cools off, the vehicle will restart. Once the vehicle gets warm, it shuts off again. The vehicle was towed a couple of times, but once it was home, it would start again. The dealer stated that the timing chain was the cause of the failure. The repair would cost $1,200. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 94,000.

10 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 03/01/2008

I was driving to work, low oil pressure light came on. Car stopped working had and extended warranty, took it to a mechanic. Mechanic found that the timing chain had broke causing the motor to go out. Per tech sludge cause the timing chain and motor to go out. Not covered under warranty due to lack of maintenance. Have only had car less than 4 months. I know their is alot of class act lawsuits on Dodge Intrepid for motor failing. Pls help!! per tech stated that their was lots of sludge in the car. I have read all the complaints on this car and they all state about the same failures. Sludge making motors and timing chains go bad.

11 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 02/10/2008

I purchased my 2001 Dodge Intrepid in October of 2006 and have had no major problems with this vehicle until recently. In the last 30 days I have spent roughly $1200 in repairs for a timing change, the replacement of the crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor and some other preventive repair measures like a tune up, serpentine belt, etc. The problem that I am most concerned about is the fact that when I am reducing speed the oil light flashes and when at a complete stop and the car is idling the oil light comes on. I took the car to Chrysler and they advised me that the oil sending unit was leaking and needed to be replaced. However, I have had this part replaced in the vehicle is still having this problem. An outside mechanic advised me of related issues with this vehicle and told me to do some research regarding this issue. In my research I have found that this problem usually leads to engine failure and this concern me greatly. For the number of vehicles that has had this same problem something needs to be done!.

12 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2004 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 12/05/2007

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Intrepid. While driving approximately 35 mph on normal road conditions, the engine stalled without warning. The contact made several attempts before the engine would restart. There were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. When the vehicle resumed operation, the performance was poor. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing and they discovered a timing belt defect. The engine was replaced at the contact's expense. The failure mileage was 76,000 and current mileage was 87,000.

Failure Date: 11/02/2007

Timing chain goes out with out notice due to a manufacturer defect had two go out this year then the oil sludge is so bad it makes the engine seize. 14 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 10/13/2007

I had been noticing a noise coming from my engine and was about to bring it to my mechanic, but while on the freeway, my car just died. I was able to pull off to the side and then get towed to my auto mechanics. The next day he had me come and look at my engine and showed me the timing chain and how much damage the chain did and how much sludge was built up in the engine. After doing some research, I came to find out that this engine was known for sludge build-up. I have to replace the engine and will not be putting a 2. 7 back in. I really like my car and am looking to put in a 3. 2 engine in so I can keep my car. This is something that should not have happened. This problem should have been taken care of by Dodge. My car is a 2001 Intrepid and only has 68,000 miles on it.

15 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 08/17/2007

Last year around Dec 12th 2006 I replaced the timing belt, and oil sensor. On August 17th 2008, one day after my oil light came on the engine seized. I checked the oil and it had slug. I just got a call from Dodge Thursday the 14th 2008, telling me that my car was due for service. 3 days later engine seized.

16 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 06/06/2007

I have a Dodge Intrepid that now has a blown engine when it should have lasted much longer. In taking it to the mechanic, I found that the 2. 7 engine was the worst one Chrysler has made and was a "disposible" engine. My windows do not work, and my fan (air/heat) only works on high. Calls to Chrysler and any Chrysler dealership have remained unanswered and now I look to get maybe $500. 00 for the car, if I'm lucky, and now have to get a loan for another car. Thanks Chrysler.

21 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 03/09/2007

I heard a knocking noise. So I took it back to the place I had my oil changed at, as I was turning into the the side street a belt broke. After my car sat for three nights on the parking lot of this business, it was then towed to the shope. It was then I was informed that I was not the first person who has had sludge build upthis. Engine needs to be replaced, due to sludge build up. My car is now sitting in my drive way, because I can not afford to pay 5,000 + to have my car fixed. I have no car to drive back and forth to school. Now I feel so disquestedwhen I think about this car. I think Chrysler should at least give me half, considering they were aware of this problem.

22 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 02/24/2007

Car stalled out in December 06 and battery replaced. Stalled again in March 07 and have been told the timing belt broke and new engine needed at only 81,000 miles. Tried to see if used engine available and was told none could be found because this was typical to the Intrepid. Also told a new engine cost and labor is about $3500. We owe $4400 and pay $163 every month with two years left to pay. Were already on the brink of foreclosure on our home and we were struggling to make these car payments, we willl struggle to pay for a car that we can not even drive. I will be contacting the dealership who should have been aware of these complaints from what I've read here, and I will be contacting Chrysler who really needs to stand behind there product!no wonder everyone is going foreign!to the ceo's, enjoy those huge homes and paychecks while the rest of us pay for Chrysler's mistakes!my brother died in a Chrysler when he was 20 years old because of a steering default!this was 23 years ago, I really should have known better!!!!I'm very glad to see from these complaints that few are getting killed from this engine defect. Lucky for Chrysler, they don't have to pay up!even more lucky for the owners of these cars and anyone driving around them when they stall!!!.
