We were driving down a major highway and suddenly the car lost power and all of the lights came on, luckily we were able to pull off the busy highway without causing a major pile up. The car had to be towed to a garage where we were told that it needed a new engine! the garage checked everything, all fluid levels were normal, the guy said that there was no "explainable" reason why this occurred. A few months before this my timing belt was replaced along with several other issues (to the tune of $800) and it had just had one of the big check ups. The last 6 months or so my oil light would come on intermittently. I had this checked numerous times, the oil was always fine (and always maintained every 3000 miles). The garage at that time could not figure out why the oil light kept coming on and for lack of anything else said it was probably a short in the light. My car is only a 2001 and now is in need of a $6000 engine!.

Check engine light came on and dealership stated that it was a sensor and replaced it. . . That was approximately 1 year ago. Knocking sound started a couple weeks ago and then car engine died in traffic 2 times. Got the engine restarted and then the oil light came on and engine died for good. Took it to one shop who stated that it was a timing belt and would not work on it. Had it towed to dealer and they stated that it needed a new engine to the tune of $6,500. 00. Stated that it was because of sludge build up and not changing oil regularly. Car was serviced every 2 to 3k miles for oil changes. Car was taken care of and yet dies @ 50,000. Miles? the government needs to force Dodge to own up to the failures and buy us consumers new engines that will last longer than 50,000. Miles! I still owe $8,000. On this vehicle!.

I had just gotten my 2001 Dodge Intrepid our of the dealers repair bay where they replaced 6 parts on the car that were working before discovering that the timing belt had broken. We tested all of the parts later and they worked. This cost 1,400 dollars. 2 weeks later I was in my car on I-75 in atlanta, georgia when I suffered catastrophic engine failure at 75 miles per hour. The engine seized and I lost all power steering and had to force the car off of the highway across 3 lanes of traffic to the shoulder. After paying a 200 dollar towing bill I found out the accumulation of oil sludge in the top of the engine had caused the failure. The car has now been on a trailer in murray county georgia for 8 months and I don't have the money to replace the engine. After contacting Dodge they said that they would not help with the repairs. They blamed it on me saying I didn't change the oil enough this cannot be true because we have religiously changed the oil every 3000 miles. I have done research on the topic and have found many other people with the same failures. Dodge should be forced into repairing these problems. So here I sit this problem has almost killed my business because I cant afford a new car that is nice enough to take clients around in so I have to drive a piece of junk. You would think that these companies would care about their customers but once again daimler/Chrysler proves that they don't give a darn about the people who make them profitable. Unless this is resolved I will never have anything to do with a Dodge, Chrysler, or mercedes ever again and I swear I will tell every person I come in contact what these people are doing to their customers I may even start a negative ad campaign against Dodge. I will take this to the ends of the earth before I let anyone I know run the risk of losing their lives due the incompetency of these money hungry sharks.
: the contact stated while driving any speed, there was a loud ticking noise in the engine. The dealership determined the timing chain was bad and the engine would blow in 1-2 months.

2000 Dodge Intrepid with 2. 7 l engine without warning or prior problem blew up while wife driving on freeway. Lost steering due to anti-freeze on belt. She was able to get off roadway without losing control. This engine has thousands of complaints about blown engines due to sludge buildup/water pump/design problems. My vehicle was properly maintained and engine replacement will cost $5000. Chrysler should be held accountable. Us govt. Should step up and enforce recall of defective 2. 7l dohc engines!.

After purchasing 2001 Intrepid in January of 2006 eight days later engine made loud scary noises while visiting family 250 miles away- I drove home and two days later engine failed- was towed to the used auto dealer where I purchased it. Less than two weeks after purchase, the engine had new chain, tensioner guides, cleaned intake valves, covers etc. Approximately $1100. 00 in repairs. I got the vehicle back in February of 06. On March 22, 2006 the engine blew while I was going to work. The warranty company will not touch it- the first time they refused and the second time is yet to be determined- I am without a vehicle and am pursuing legal options including opting in to a class action, PA attorney general, consumer protection bureau, private attorney since the check engine light was on when I drove the vehicle off the lot in the first place ( a cold winter night, I had two of my children with me and had to get them home, I called the dealer upon my arrival home to inform him of same).
Have had to replace engine 3 times an looks like it needs to be replaced again in a1999 Dodge Intrepid car 2. 7 engine due to oil sludge build up in engine with oil changed every 2,500 miles.
The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. The contact stated that the vehicle hesitates and shuts off between 5 and 35 mph. The failure occurs while turning and decelerating to stop. The oil and check engine lights illuminate on the instrument panel just before the vehicle shuts off. The contact has taken the vehicle to the shop and the oil pump, timing belt, and water pump were replaced. The current mileage was 98,000 and failure mileage was 86,000.
On Feb 17 2006 a knocking began under the hood of the car. On Feb 20 2006 the car was taken to sunoco for investigation, the mechanic suggested it was coming from the engine and to have it checked out ASAP. On Feb 21st the car cut off while driving down the street. I managed to drive the car to a midas shop, the mechanic told me there were many problems with the engine in my car model. The car sat at the midas shop until Feb 23rd when a tow truck took it to an auto shop.
2. 7 Chrysler motor. The timing gears and belt were replaced by marketplace Chrysler Suzuki inc around 65000. Then the motor develops a lower knock. The same dealership then says Chrysler made a bad motor and it will cost $3200 for a new motor. Will Chrysler own up for their failure ? and put a new motor in my car free of charge.
: the contact stated there was a noise coming from the engine. It sounded as though valves were clanking. The noise occurred one day prior to the vehicle not starting. The vehicle was towed to the dealership. The dealership determined the timing chain broke causing the valves to fall into the pistons. The engine needs to be rebuilt as a result.
Radiator pressure valve failed. Two months later the water pump failed. At this time the oil sensor light would come blink, but not that often. When I went to gfet the water pump fixed the told me the timimg chain was loose. I didnt replace it because I didnt have money at the time. Two months lated I take my car to the shop to get the belt replace. They told me that who ever replaced the water pump failed bent some nut connected to the pully.
The contact stated after turning the engine off, the vehicle would not restart. The vehicle had to be towed to the dealership, who discovered that the engine had sludge build up, and would have to be replaced. He chose not to repair the vehicle. The air condition and heat did not work and the timing belt was loose. Updated 12/27/05.
Timing chain of 2000 Chrysler Intrepid broke while traviling at highway speed on m84 between saginaw and bay city.

The contact stated the timing chain tensioner was replaced three times. It was replaced 500 miles ago, and is currently working correctly. Updated 12/27/2005 - each time it failed it caused the engine to seize and result in loss of power steering and power brakes. The timing chain has been replaced at 64306 miles, 72687 miles and 80982 miles.

The serpentine belt cracked. Transmission fluid leaked from cooler hoses. The front brake pads were replaced and the rotors were machined. The caller said timing chain broke while traveling at 30 mph. This happened without warning. There were noises, but he did not know what they were. Vehicle was towed to the caller's home. Dealer and manufacturer have not been contacted yet.
On August 18, 2005 the engine stalled while the consumer was stopping at a stop light. She was able to get safely off the road. When she took vehicle to dealer for repairs they told her that the timing chain failed and would need a new motor. There had been no previous problems with the vehicle. There were no accidents.
Contact owns a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. The contact stated the timing chain broke. The contact had two different repair shops inspect the vehicle, and they stated that the engine was not worth a dime. The mechanic determined that Chrysler should have never put this type of motor into a vehicle. The consumer contacted the manufacturer, and they advised the contact to purchase a new vehicle. The vehicle only had 57,000 miles on it.
Caller stated timing chain failed after 2 months. Dealer said there were three timing chains on the vehicle, and that when one failed they all malfunctioned. Caller did not fix vehicle f yet. Caller said this happened without warning. Manufacturer has not been contacted yet.
Dt the motor quit on the highway. No for warning, no noise, no lights. Had it towed the dealers, and they said a couple of sensors went out. They replaced the two sensors, and got it back, then, heard a knock in the motor when starting it. Took it back to dealer, and they said it was the timing chain, and vehicle needed a new motor. This started on June 5, 2005.
Contact states vehicle quit running while backing up to park. The service dealer stated the timing chain broke which caused no oil in the engine.
Consumer states: engine malfunctioned. Called Chrysler and replaced transmission 9 months ago. The engine just shut down, the timing chain broke. No lights came on when the engine shut down. Acted like it wanted to cut off, it started shaking ,and just died and wouldn't start back. It acted like it wanted to turn over, making a noise. Mechanic said internal engine damage caused by timing chain, and fluids got mixed in with the oil. Just had oil changed week prior to this.
My 2002 Dodge Intrepid started to make a knocking sound. Made an appointment for service/repair wiyh my local mechanic. Appt was for may 5, 2002. My car never made it to the appointment. On may 4, 2002, I was driving home from a dr. Appt @ about 4:30 p. M. & my car literally shut off with no warning. I was in the middle of rush hour traffic in a no passing zone approaching a metal grate bridge wide enough for two cars to pass in opposite directions. I was able to coast over the bridge safely & had to pull over onto the side of the road (rt#322 heading west-from west chester, PA. Approx. 1 mile outside of dowingtown, PA. ) & walk on the side of the road (no sidewalks) for approx. 1/4 mile with cars whizzing by me, to nearby wawa store. Had the car towed ($45. 00 paid by me) to my mechanic who promplty told me that the timing belt had snapped & gone through the top of my enginge. Unfixable! contacted the dealer who sold me the car - "carsense" located at 21 pottstown pike, uwchland, PA 19480. They said to have the car towed up to them ($85. 00 paid by me again). Finally the next day the service rep told us the car would need to have the engine replaced to the tune of $5,600. This car only has 42,000 miles on it! I haven't even had the car for 3 years yet. I still owe $7,000 on the car. Car sense will not bear the financial responsiblity for the repairs. Did some research on the internet by typing in the search words: Dodge Intrepid engine problems & located many sites describing the same thing that happened to me. Car quits with barely a warning & dealer will not pay for repairs, but instead, blames the "lack of proper maintainance" on the owner. Websites show me otherwise. Also know of 2 people personally, who have experience the same scenario. These cars are all over the place & I can't imagine how many people this has happened to. This proves a real safety hazzard for many drivers of this car & other drivers near this car when it quits.
While driving at 35 mph, suddenly a loud tapping noise was heard from engine compartment. Then, the vehicle stalled. Vehicle was towed to the dealership. The timing chain broke. This was a common problem with these my vehicles.
2001 Dodge Intrepid with 90,000 miles. Engine failed on 3-24-2005. Service garage reports sludge (oil), timing belt issue, lifter damage, and that most feasible correction is new engine.
While driving down highway timing chain tensioner failed, destroying engine.
While driving at 35 mph engine started knocking. Consumer took vehicle back to the dealer, and dealer replaced the timing chain, tension span, and an oil pump. Consumer drove the vehicle for approximately 10 miles and the engine blew. Had it towed back to the dealer.
The timing belt would make a slapping noise while the check engine light remained on. Results showed that the vehicle needed a new engine.
Replaced timing belt at 80,000 miles. 13,000 miles later the timing belt went again and took out the entire engine. Daimler/Chrysler refuses to do anything about it and was only willing to give a 2% reduction in the cost of a new vehicle. Car has less than 100,000 miles and is a boat anchor that I am still paying on.
While driving approximately 40 mph engine inadvertently stalled. When taken to get it serviced it was determined that stalling was due to the timing chain.
2000 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 l v6 - timing chain failed while in traffic making the car inoperable. Time cover exploded. Valves are bent. Cannot be repaired. Will require entire new motor.
Was stopping at a red light and the engine shut off after a brief damaging noise. I have been told the timing belt blew and destroyed the engine. Vehicle was left on busy roadway with occupants inside until a tow truck could arrive. Police were called to avoid a rear end collision. Every mechanic I have called has recommended replacing the engine. No action has been taken. Too expensive.
The engine failed twice, it was an oil sludge. Has paper work from Chrysler stating they would pay $850. 00, and by signing this consumer would give up all future rights. Mechanic determin ed that timing chain broke. The first major problem occurred ayear ago and mechanic replaced oil pump, the rod bearings, main bearing , and timing chain. Did the oil changes every 3,000. In the owner's manual it recommended every 7,000. Miles.
