Repeated repairs of same problem, I had to have a timing chain put on this car twice within a year and half of having this car,I also have had leaks from the oil pan and the transmission which has been repaired twice thus far. Now the problem is that the oil light comes on when the car goes from fast moving speed to lower speed and it stays on for a minute or two then it goes off, but it does come back on eventually. This car has had more repairs than all the cars I have owned and just a matter of time before the engine does go out .

42 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 08/26/2004

I was approx. 10 miles out of town when I noticed smoke coming from under the hood. I pulled off the road and proceeded to open hood where I found flames coming from the engine. Fire was extinguished when hood was closed. I believe that the oil that was coming from the engine was what was burning. There was oil down the side of the car from front fender well to the back bumper and puddle along the side of the car. The car was towed to our local Dodge dealership. We were told that the coolant was evaporating inside the engine, and it was not cooling the engine. There was no warning from any gauges that the oil pressure was low or that the car was overheating. We were told that the engine would have to be replaced and that a rebuilt engine from Chrysler was $4700 and that was without labor.

53 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Dodge Intrepid

My 1998 Dodge Intrepid experienced sudden engine failure. It will cost me approximately $6500 to fix the problem. This will involve replacing the engine which has sludge build-up and a mass air flow sensor. I maintained regular service on this vehicle and was told by Chrysler that it was my fault. Upon investigation, I discovered that I am by no mean the only victim of this type of problem. Please help me get justice.

55 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 01/15/2003

I have a 1999 Intrepid 2. 7 liter v6. At 41000 miles the oil light started coming on. I had the cat towed to the dealer and they told me the engine was shot. It had spun a bearing. When the engine was opened up all of the oil had bee turned to sludge which looked like burnt pudding. I leased this car from a dealer as a demo with 21000 miles. I was told it was dealer serviced. I personally serviced it myself per the Dodge requirements. There is no way the oil should solidify the way it has. There is a serious design problem with the oil system and the cooling of this aluminum marvel of a motor. Dealer quoted $7000 to install used motor. I purchased a remanufactured motor and installed it myself for $3500. Dodge should stand behind it's products. I found dealer and factory people of no use to solve this problem which seems rampant with this motor.

56 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 01/15/2003

I own a 1996 Dodge inrepid with 61,255 miles on it as of today ( 1/16/2003). This vehicle has had three failuers of the water pump at a cost to repaire of $500. 00 each time to repaire. I have also had the front suspension fail, which cost $1185. 00 to repaire. This vehicle is not driven hard, mileage will show maybe 10,000 miles per year. I feel by the number of complaints on your system that the manufacture has had more than normal number of complaints for both these problems. I think a recall is called for, and some sort of remibrusment for the cost of repaires made. All my repaires where done by a goodyear facility or dealership.

57 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 12/06/2002

Complete engine failure at 75000 miles, oil light began to flash on and off engine started to knock loudly vehicle lost all speed and stalled on expressway enterance ramp. This vehicle's oil and filter was changed every 3000 miles yet when the engine was disassembled there was large amounts of sludge through out the it's inside ,engine was cleaned and rebuilt with new rods, camshaft, bearings pistons ect, this was the cheapest fix. From all the information that I have read there seems to be a problem with a great many of the 2. 7 liter v6 engines installed in this vehicle. The repairs are very costly and time consuming.

58 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 08/16/2001

59 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 03/02/2001

I have owned the Dodge for almost 2 years, this is the second waterpump that I have had to replace. The first was covered under my 3/36000 mi warrentee. The same thing happened this time. The water pump seesed, which in turn took out my timing belt, also took out a few other components. I contacted the company they told me that there was nothing that I could do because I didn't have the car towed to there service garage. I had it towed to my machanic. I was also told that this is not the first time that this has happened to this kind of car. My machinic said that he has seen other Dodge intriped with the same problem.

60 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 09/03/2000

Water pump failed / engine overheated / heads warped / cylinder walls damaged now engine needs to be replaced.

61 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 07/12/2000

Water outlet housing contains metal bleed screw which randomly leaks antifreeze. First leak occurred approx 3 months ago and housing was replaced. Housing leaked again, dealer tightened bleed screw but would not replace housing. Housing is once again leaking, dealer will not repair. Service manager says that Chrysler engineers report that this leakage may occur and that no action will be taken to correct antifreeze leak. Leakage occurs where bleed screw fitting inserts into the plastic water outlet housing. Leakage does not occur from bleed screw but instead from the fitting to housing interface. Chrysler engineers also reported (thru service manager) that they have had several complaints on this but there is no service bulletin or corrective action to stop leakage.

64 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 05/10/2000

I think Chrysler should recall the water pump on 3. 5l Intrepids, they are a very poorly designed.

65 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1997 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 01/11/2000

Water pump locked up, causing timing belt to break, causing instant engine fairure. This left me in the middle of a very busy highway at risk of collision. The police had to block the lane I was in until a tow truck could remove the car. It is my understanding the water pump p/n has been superceded because of high failure rates.

66 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 12/17/1999

The water pump failed on the highway, causing engine to overheat so bad the engine had to be replaced , all the while the temperature gauge stayed in the normal range.

67 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1997 Dodge Intrepid

Water pump leaking causing t-belt to jump tooth. Nlm.

68 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Dodge Intrepid

There was a leakage within the water pump. Consumer had water pump replaced twice, and water pump is leaking again. And dealer states that the problem is coming from the engine too.

69 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 05/26/1999

Water pump failed. Yh.

70 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 05/12/1999

I had to have my car towed to our local garage because of the water pump went. From what the garage mechanic told me was that it was leaking for a while with out being noticed. In turn, because of the leak it ruined the timing belt which also had to be replaced along with the water pump. My mechanic told me that it is highly unusual for a water pump to go on a 4 year old car with not that much mileage. This visit to the garage cost me $500. 47 (parts & labor).
