3 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 01/02/2009

Driving south on icy and snowpack highway. Oncoming car spun into my lane. Braked hard, moved right, oncoming car spun back towards their lane, continued past car. Watched the car and it didn't hit anything. I accelerated but had no throttle response. Engine had died. The engine has never done this. Put in neutral, started engine, put in drive, accelerated and drove fine. I was going 55 to 60 mph. In drive and 4 wheel drive engaged. The pickup has an automatic transmission. I think it was in lockup and when I slammed on the brakes the lock up converter did not have time to disengage when the tires stopped when I braked. The pickup does not have all wheel anti lock brakes. It does have rear wheel anti-lock brakes. The tires are studded snow tires. I think the roads were slick enough to stop the wheels when braking hard. With all 4 wheels stopped, the torque converter in lock up it would act like a standard transmission and kill the engine. The only way that would have been a problem is if I had to go in the ditch to avoid the oncoming car. In that situation, deep snow in the ditch plus the plow berm, I would have had to accelerate to get through it and keep the pickup from going side ways and possibly rolling. Have you had any other complaints like this. If you have any questions please call. Thanks,.

5 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 10/16/2007

After my truck was sitting without starting for a couple of days, it would not go into reverse. I would hit the accelerator and the truck would not move. After a while, it would start to sift into gear with a very loud noise. I also noticed, that when I was coming to a stop, but didn't completely stop, the transmission would hit very hard upon acceleration. I have taken it to the shop three times. The first time I was told that since there was no code, that it was fine. I stated that if it was a mechanical issue, that you may not get a code. For instance, if you lose a tire on the road. The second time, they adjusted the electronic shifter, but it didn't help. The third time, they changed the filter, but only put silicone on the pan with no gasket. I was told that the tranny had a problem with the filter allowing the torque converter to back bleed and that they put in a filter with a check valve to fix the problem. I now have more power, but I am still getting some hard shifting when I slow down and then speed up. The problem started at 20,000 miles.

6 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 03/14/2007

A dash board cover glued (well siliconed over the top of old dashboard. Make sure the entire surface is sealed to cover because deteriation will continue and it will collaps e into lower dashboard area. Hint: genosgarage. Com . Transmission and torque converter,"check the tire size. If not same as on the door post you have found the problem. If not the same the speed sensor which should be replace anyhow , and you can do this. Are not reading incorrectly because of tires being larger than originally specified and/or towing something in overdrive. Check manual. Torque converter not in total lock up causing slirpage. Need the 'proper' computer code analyzer. Slippage will also be in the transmission before replacing the transmission, flush it and the torque converter. Replace d stated sensors, filter. Then had computer flashed properly. Note: when tires seized changed it and effected computer. The speed sensor and tps give wrong signal. Wear and tear, ie; time and towing, eventually an eight second slippage will occur and trip the computer thus the warning light. Hard acceleration will cause the transmission to bang in and out and try to down shift (tps and speed sensor). Dodge did "not" flash computer properly when the tire size was changed, therefore the problem. Most Dodge dealerships cannot proberly "flash" computer. Important; need to find shop that can flash it with correct tire size not a generic setting. Dealerships will not tell you this don't know. A specialty shop that deals in all Dodge truckss. This is not restricted to just the 1500. "flash with the proper tire size" if the slippage continues and light comes on after highway runs or towing again, you very well may have to replace the torque comverter.

8 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2001 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 07/25/2006

I have a 2001 Dodge ram with 61000 miles. Check engine light came on and dealer says I have an issue with my transmission. I late find out that daimlerchrysler issued a technical bulletin in 10/02/2000 that this model has a defect in the transmission pressure boost valve. . . Bulletin 21-11-00. Since my failure occurred after my warranty expired they are telling me I am responsible for the repair. I think this should have been a recall since the manufacturer knew they had a defect in the transmission in 2000 and still allowed cars to be sold with the defect.

9 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 02/13/2006

Transmission in my 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab pick-up truck with only 3656 miles on it is making a whining sound when it is warmed up, the vehicle was brought back to the dealership where it was purchased and looked at by one of the service technicians, the technician stated that the transmission would need a torque converter and a front pump. The manufacturer of the vehicle was contacted and the parts which were requested by the dealership under warranty were denied by the manufacturer, so at this time I was told by the service director that I would have to live with it and was sent home with the transmission still whining as it was when I brought it in, this condition to me is completely unacceptable and it is unsafe.

12 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2001 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 05/20/2005

Re:"service issue" upon purchase, was told by dealer no codes, yet recieved constant engine warning light. Another dealer in s. C. Addy Dodge, charged $270 to fix, while on vacation there which made the problem worse by illuminating more dash lights. Addy Dodge then stated I needed a torge convertor for $2200. The '01 ram had 32k miles and ran fine with no shift problem however I was sold a convertor on the premise it "would not make it home" after the first repair the day before. I drove out to the dealer to see for myself and the truck was completed in record time, left in front of the dealer who could not provied the "old parts". I paid for the unit and had addy Dodge deliver it to my vacation condo. 2 hours later it was stolen from the 5th floor of the condo. No other stolen vehicle history at that address, one way in and out and many other bikes and trucks on floors 1-5. I suspect the entire episode related to the dealer and cannot get help from Chrysler as the vehicle was out of warranty in" time" yet lustine Dodge of woodbridge could not find this issue from point of sale to repair at another dealer.

19 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 02/05/2004

Dashboard cracking becoming severe. Many cracks over the complete dash board top surface. This may be related. . . . . Possible chemical reaction - per dealer. Fumes from the transmission overflow seep into driver compartment. The dashboard engine light comes on periodically. Transmission functions fine but dealer says the torque convert is slipping at lock up causing a no-lockup slippage condition after 8 seconds. Dealer says I probably should replace the transmission completely and replace the dash at my cost. Total would be about what the value of the 1500 book is when they got done. I hardly tow anything but a small boat. It spits out fluid out the overflow over a period of time. Have installed a transmission cooler but condition, slight odor and spilling continued. Repeated flashing the computer only popped up the acceleration a little but has not made any other changes. Gas mileage is way down 10. 4 mpg highway.

20 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2001 Dodge Ram 1500

Transmission failure due to torque convertor failure. Went to dealership while under warranty was told everything was fine at 34000 miles. At 43000 miles transmission went out. Now I am out the money to fix it when if they had fixed the problem at 34000 miles it would have been fine.

22 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2001 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 11/28/2003

I bought a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 in Nov 2002. Since ive owned the truck I have had to replace in the transmission: a locking silinoid, an overdrive solinoid, 2 torque converters, and a pressure transducer. I would think that maybe I just had a lemon, but the more people I talk to that have these trucks the more that I find that it is a manufacturers problem that they will not address (I have contacted Chrysler) refused any assistance.

23 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500

2000 Dodge ram, transmission failure, torque convertor and overdrive components under 60,000 miles. Automatic transmissions are rated for 150,000 miles, 3 others in the same shop for the same problem.

24 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2001 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 10/14/2003

I have a 2001 Dodge 1500 w/a 5. 9 v8. At around 58000 miles transmission started to go out. Took it to a shop, and they told us it was the torque converter. We replaced the transmission, and yet the problem still occurred. I am an hard core Dodge buyer, but this is starting to turn me off Dodges all together.

25 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2001 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 06/04/2003

Pulling into driveway, the truck shut off. It started back, but seemed to hesitate when trying to accelerate. The following day, the truck continued to hesitate. I added transmission fluid and took a "test drive" in the driveway to see if it continued to hesitate. It did not, but I noticed fluid leaking out of the bottom of the truck (the transmission fluid I had just put in). I had to call a roll-back to tow it to a mechanic. He said it took him a day and a half just to remove the transmission. He noticed metal shavings in the transmission fluid. He was unable to remove the torque converter at all. It was completely stuck. This truck has only 50,100 miles at the time of this repair. We had to have a new transmission, and transmission cooler, totalling $3,061. 19 in repairs. I called the dealer I bought it from, and no one returned my call. I called the daimlerchrysler corp. And was told that there was nothing they would do.

26 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2001 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 01/07/2003

I have a 2001 Dodge ram with 23,600 miles on it. Two weeks ago the transmission completely failed 2 hours form my house. It left me stranded on the side of the road with a truck load of hunting gear. Of course it had to be towed to the nearest dealer. Diamler Chrysler could care less that it was 9pm and I had no way home. The dealer in annapolis rebuilt the transmission - they claimed the torque converter failed. They had the vehicle for a week. 3 days after I got the vehicle back, the transmission started to fail again. Now its at leesburg Dodge (va) and they are in the process of rebuilding it a second time. This truck has no tow hitches and has never towed a heavy load. It is not abused but just failed. This is unnacceptable and if things are not made right with me, I will never buy another Dodge again.

27 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 12/03/2002

While driving the vehicle, the automatic transmission had broken, and caused the consumer to pull off of the road. The dealer has been notified. The dealer stated that the torque converter had gone out and melted on the flywheel. The dealer also found metal shavings all over. There was another incident where the consumer placed gas in the vehicle, and later found fluid pouring out of the vehicle. The consumer then placed transmission fluid in the vehicle. The transmission was replaced along with the cooler line, and the system was flushed the system.

28 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 1500

29 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 03/18/2001

The van would jerk badly when put into drive and when sitting at a red light or stop sign it would begin to lurch forward requiring me to press hard on the brakes. After 8 days in the dealership and numerous calls from the service rep. Saying that they keep finding more problems with the transmission. After I got it home I noticed that the invoice showed that one of the parts that had been replaced was the torque convertor and that it had been replaced with a remanufactured one. This van had only 3762 miles on it when the original transmission failed. How safe will it be for me to drive my small grandchildren around in a new vehicle with a rebuilt transmission when the original transmission failed with only 3700 miles on it. The customer service rep. Advised me that the she would contact the regional rep. To meet with me . It has been three days and no one has contacted me yet. No onerhrgrnufactured acedinbn.

30 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 1997 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 07/01/2000

Since January I have been having problems with it stalling when I put it in reverse if I had it idle for awhile or warming up. I took it back to auto nation and they could not find anything wrong. They took it to dickinson Dodge (910) 864-2411 and they could not get it to duplicate. The problem continued periodically until April when the transmission started slipping. This would only happen when I was in reverse then would try to put it in drive. The transmission would hesitate and it was like I was in nuetral. After a few seconds the drive gear would kick in and it was fine. A few times I had to put it in d2 then pull out and put it in drive. I had dickinson Dodge check this again and they could find no problem. In late June I took it in for service and told dickinson to check the transmission again and they could not find anything or get it to duplicate the slipping and stalling. They di replace the serpentine belt and told me that could have been the problem but it wasn't. Two ddays after on July 1st I was driving around fayetteville and the check engine light came on. I contacted dickinson Dodge again and on 5 July took it in. Initially they said the fault registered as a drop in rpm's. They could not find the source of the problem and thought it was electrical initially. Then on 6 July they decided to drop the transmission pan and found the torque converter was separating and putting metal fragments in the transmission. They said this ate away the seal for the gear box and allowed oil in the clutches. That was causing the slippage and the transmission would have to be rebuilt. They also said my overdrive gear was already out. They said it would cost approximately $1500 to rebuild it. I have already spent $95 for testing which showed nothing and another $80 for the serpentine belt replacement. I would think a truck with only 48,000 miles on it the transmission would be in excellent condition. I am suspecting it may be a flood vehicle.

31 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 06/21/2000

While towing a travel trailer (3000 lbs) from san antonio to corpus christi, air temp 85 degrees, overdrive off, distance 130 miles traveled, all of the sudden the torque converter unlocked and the engine revved up, and the transmission started vibrating. I immediately took my foot off the gas and let the vehicle coast untill the torque converter locked again, about two miles and speed dropped to 50 mph. Everthing seemed alright until we traveled another 10 miles down the road and it happened again, it happened a third time about 10 more miles down the road. We towed the trailer exactly 185 miles when we had to stop for gas, tank on empty, and put in 27. 5 gallons of gas. I would say the transmission is slipping alot. Stayed two days at the coast and tried to drive back to san antonio, traveled 30 miles to a military base with the engine reving and barely doing 50 mph, left the trailer in storage, filled the tank again, took 8 gallons of gas, drove back to san antonio, any time tried to do over 70 mph to pass slower vehicles the transmission would start vibrating. Took the vehicle to the dealer and explained the problems, they gave the vehicle back to me a week later stating there is nothing wrong with the transmission. Went down to corpus christi on 14 Jul 2000 to retreive the trailer, temp 92 degrees, left the base and traveled 11 miles before the transmission torque converter unlocked again. Could only do 30 mph back to the base or the torque converter would unlock. Took it back again to the dealer and they said "there are no problems with the transmission". All they did was put the computer on it , the pan has not been dropped yet, pressure gagues have not been put on it either. They want me to duplicate the problem, the trailer is 185 miles away and the vehicle can not tow it back here. What do I do???.
