Dodge Ram 1500 owners have reported 24 problems related to axle shaft (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While making a right turn into a driveway my front left wheel flange separated from the wheel bearing causing the wheel to come off. The truck is a two wheel drive however Dodge uses the same unit wheel bearing as on a four wheel drive truck. Two wheel drive trucks do not have a cv axle shaft through the bearing and so if the wheel flange separates there is nothing to hold the unit bearing together. To dramatize the issue the same thing happened on my same truck a year previous under near identical circumstances. The first time I think part defect, the second time I think design defect. Ironically I had just exited the freeway onto secondary road and was making slow speed turns when the failure occurred. I want to emphasize the whhel bearing did not fail. The flange with the lug studs for the wheel separated from the bearing. Two times, opposite sides on the same truck.

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 45 mph, a loud knocking noise emitted from the rear passenger's side of the vehicle. The failure occurred one week after the vehicle was serviced under NHTSA campaign number: 14v796000 (power train). The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who informed that the rear axle shaft exhibited 1/8 of an inch grove and declined to perform an additional repair related to the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

Experienced strong vibration in front left side of vehicle, as though driving on rumble strip on highway. Speed was irrelevant, anywhere from 25 mph and above. Felt as though it was a locked caliper or other wheel/brake issue. Brought to dealership where truck was always maintained, and after their inspection, they find nothing. This was March, 2010. Experienced same vibration intermittently throughout summer of 2010. Vibration became a common occurrence. At times it feels as though I was driving on the rim. In November, 2010, brought to another dealership for same complaint. They find front axle shaft requiring replacement, which was covered under powertrain warranty. Also found was front hub and bearing requiring replacement, which was not covered under warranty. This failure appears to be the subject of 2006 model year recalls.

My husband & I recently purchased a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 from gossett motor cars located at 1900 covington pike rd. In memphis, TN. While my husband was making a left hand turn traveling 3 to 5 mph, the rear right wheel sheared off at the axle. The wheel still had the brake assembly attached to the rim. The dealer stated that an investigator/engineer from Chrysler came to inspect the truck and in the report indicated that the axle break was caused by an impact and that the axle would not be covered under the 7 year 70,000 mile warranty which we were informed by a rep at Chrysler corp was transferable. The dealership & Chrysler corp refused to release the report to us. There was no impact that caused this and upon reviewing several other complaints it appears that there are several other owners of the same truck who have experienced the same problem. One in particular stands out odi # 10147823. In addition, there is a report from an engineer at the Chrysler axle plant, report # 10007842 that acknowledges that Chrysler is aware of a problem in manufacturing and the heat currying. See odi case # 10058633 and voq 10059475.

While making a u-turn traveling 3 to 5 mph, the rear right wheel sheared off at the axle leaving the truck sitting on the back side of the 20" rim. The wheel still had the brake assembly attached to the rim. The dealer had an investigator inspect the truck and in the report they said there was impact damage and they would not warranty the axle. I know the report has to be false. Besides the axle shearing the only other damage is scratches to the face of the rim, caliper bracket, and brake line. The wheel and tire are still usable. The truck only has 30,000 mile.
Power train - axle shaft broke

2004 Dodge 1500 quad cab 22k miles. Rear passenger axle end broke off causing no control of vehicle, thus the truck spins into a sign and damaged the passenger rear bed. Police report says that it looked like a manufacture defect of the axle. We went on line that night and found several cases they same. I contacted Chrysler and they had an investigator come and look. After approx 5 weeks I got a letter back that says the axel broke due to impact and they were not going to pay for anything. Just type in Dodge axles broke and the internet has a lot of the same failures recorded by other Dodge owners. This is not right someone can be killed with this fault. The wheel and brakes all just break off leaving no control.
After the light turned green, I began to make a left turn. The back of the truck dropped. After I came to a stop I got out and found my truck was sitting on my right rear rim. The inner axle and outer axle brackets had broken. I didn't hit anything or go in a pot hole. The dealer attempted to convince me that I hit something. It was snowing and I was not going more than 15 miles on hour, so even if I did hit the curb, which I didn't, it shouldn't shear my axle.
For christmas vacations, I went to durango, mexico. When I was driving there, I took a curve approximatly at 35 mph and I suddenly hear a loud noise on the back of the truck and I saw the left rear tire pass me by. I was able to control my truck, and there was no traffic at that time so there was no accident thank god. The rear axel broke, both wheels were out and the truck's bed was on the floor.
While driving down the road I hear a grinding and a pop noise and the rear end of my 2003 1500 ram drops down and immediately goes into a 3-60 spin. The whole axle assembly snapped off right by the hub. The whole brake assembly, still connected to the rim and tire this is the second time it broke on the same side, and it is identical to the first break. The first was at 8,000, and now 16,000 miles.
Driving northbound on the 101 freeway in the far right lane changed to the center lane on dry asphalt pass a slower moving car and heard a loud noise. Face impacted the steering wheel . Don,t recall anymore than that do have an accident report. Think the right rear axle broke or something in the right front suspension. Tie rod or ball joint the inside of the right front wheel is estroyed and was off. The truck complete with large bracket broken tie rod and ball joints and rotor . Outside of wheel is not damaged. Right rear wheel has the brake drum/disc and part of the broken off axle still bolted to it. . Allpar has a report on Dodge ram axles braking 2002 and up. States a new design is in place for 2006. Is aware of this problem. . Truck hit a concrete wall and skidded to a stop in the third lane of traffic on fire under the front end a following wittness stated sparks were flying through the air. . They also put out the fire. Major front end damage and no air bags deployed. Dodge denied any responcibillity a claim was filed have the letters and email. The dealers added further injury by charging as much as possible and high interest for a new magnum sxt. Made it impossible to buy the rt model. . I do have the two wheels in question at the shop I work at tri city tansmission service. And photos of the aftermath. . At the body shop. They couln't believe I walked away. Thankyou for your time sincerely michael a young.
Going 35 mph the rear axle on my 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 broke causing the rear wheel to fall off. There was no impact to the wheel beforhand. Dodge will not cover it under waranty even though it was clearly a faulty product. After reaserch I found many people have had the same problem.
While driving down an on ramp toward the highway at about 20 mph my entire left rear wheel assembly sheared or the side axle. This caused the vehicle to veer to the left and in fact made a complete u-turn. My travel trailer I was towing then jackknifed striking the rear quarter panel. Chrysler has denied liability. The vehicle was only 9 months only. A review of NHTSA site has shown 6 incidents within the last 5 months. Also a report filed by an engineer at Chrysler axle plant report # 10007842 acknowledges that Chrysler is aware of a problem in manufacturing and the heat currying. My axle is brittle and also appears to be crystallized in the interior. This is in my opinion a manufacturing defect, the total damage to my vehicle and trailer exceeds $15,000. 00. See voq 10059475, same incident.
Dodge 4x4 quad cab (2001), right front ball joint snapped. In the fall of 2003 I was in 4 wheel drive and turned to the left from a parked position when the boll joint snapped on the right front.

My son and others could have been killed because of this. He just pulled away from a stop lite in a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500, only 3 months old when the rear right axle snapped shearing off the wheel and sending him skidding on the pavement. He and others were very lucky toget out of the way of danger. I am writing this on December 23rd. We have not heard a word from the dealer where we had the vehicle towed which would be south oak Dodge at 4550 Lincoln highway in matteson, ill. Phone is 708-747-7950. VIN #1d7ha16d63j675887.
On 9/1/2003 at approximately 8:40 p. M. My son was driving our 2001 Dodge ram pick-up on us 23 south between omer, michigan and standish, michigan. I was in the passenger seat in the front and my husband was in the back seat. All of a sudden there was a loud screeching noise and we went into the oncoming lane of northbound traffic. My son kept saying he could not control the truck. He was able to get the truck back in the southbound lanes and the truck kept fishtailing. All of a sudden the truck took a very hard right and we went through the ditch with coattails into the farm field and rolled the truck. When we stopped moving and we were all out of the truck some people who stopped, we asked them what happened and they said all they saw was headlights flying in the air and it looked like we lost a tire. With the police there he asked my son if he had fallen asleep my son said no that all of a sudden he could not control the truck. The police then thought we had a flat tire but upon looking for the tire in the farm field it was discovered that the back drivers side wheel had broke at the axle right at the spindle. All lug nuts and brake pads were still intact inside of the wheel and it was not flat. Also where the axle broke off the wheel the metal was shining and crackling. None of us, luckily, were seriously injured scraps, bruises, and a lot of pulled muscles. None of us went to the hospital. We do felt lucky that it happened where it did since 10 more minutes up the road we would have been on I-75 south in holiday traffic and things I am sure would have been different. We do feel and with anyone we have talked with that this was a manufacturer defect of poor metal not being heat treated correctly.
When I was driving home the entire rear left wheel fell off my vehicle. It lloked like the axle snapped on it end. I was lucky I was able to control my vehicle.
Consumer states rear differential began making loud pinging sounds as if metal was cooling after the vehicle had been towing a trailer for three hours on the highway. Paint was bubbling off of the differnetial. Dealer found the entire differential and rear axle bearings needed to be replaced.
