Dodge Ram 1500 owners have reported 61 problems related to transfer case (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The steering is very loose, when going over a bump the vehicle is pulled into another direction and you temporarily lose control of the vehicle. The 4x4 was not operating properly, so the transfer case was replaced. Upon replacing transfer case the rear differential locked up and the rear wheels won't move. This seems to be a very common issue with this vehicle. All of these issues are common among Dodge Ram 1500s of this year( 2003) these issues should be recalled!.

Truck started rumbling that sounded like when you go over rumble strips on the freeway if I replace the rear end and it's still doing it. The second thing is the transfer case has some kind of short in it that no one can figure out driving down the road it locks in lights out periodically so I had to disengage it so it wouldn't do that so I can drive it it would also go into neutral just randomly I was driving uphill when it happened and I had to replace the transmission that cost me $4,200 which I thought would fix the problem but it did not.

2004 Dodge Ram 1500 date of mfr is 02 - 04 (February 2004), which falls in the recall on the pinion nut, nhsta recall 14v796000, Chrysler recall p77, which states pinion nut may come loose due to undersize spline on the pinion gear. The date of manufacture for the recall falls between January 28, 2004 through August 3, 2005. The recall statement only states 2005 model years, yet the date range for the recall also include 2004 and 2006 model years. Recently I have had the pinion nut on my truck come loose to the point the drive shaft fell off and the result of it also ended up a destroyed transfer case. Unaware of the recall because I never received a recall due to the fact that the recall only included 2005 model years, when in fact 2004, 2005, and 2006 model years are effected by the recall and owners of all years should have received a recall notice but did not, due to the verbage of the recall. I was made aware of this recall through other means after the incident of the pinion nut coming loose on my truck several days later. The recall needs to be revised to include 2004 and 2006 model years where the date of mfr includes 01-04 to 08-05 (January 2004 through to August 2005). This recall effects the Dodge ram pickups with Chrysler corporate 9. 25 rear axles. At the time of my incident, the vehicle was in motion on a city street, as I was attempted to turn off the city street into a parking lot. My truck is currently being worked on my by mechanic and will remain so. I am highly disappointment at Chrysler in the fact that this issue was overlooked and consumers are in 2004 and 2006 model years and may be unaware of the situation. The date of mfr on my truck is 02-04, falling within the date of manufacture vehicles for the 14v796000 recall.
Takara recall the 4x4 shift linkage going to transfer case falls out of the shift levers due to the use of plastic grommets to secure and hold medal rod in place. The plastic grommets get dry rotted from the heat of the engine causing the grommets to crack and break therefore loseing the medal shift linkage while driving . The medal shift linkage falling while driving hitting other vehical causing damage to hurt the vehical and posable hurting the passengers of the vehical from an accident.

We was driving down the highway and the transfer case and drive shaft along with the evaporator box on the gas tank went flying out the ass of the truck. It lifted us off the ground put a whole in the gas tank and the truck could have exploded if we didn't get it stoped in time so it didn't spark. Our hole family could have died that day!.

Driving my vehicle down a city street I started to approach a stop sign. As the vehicle came almost to a stop I heard a scraping noise and then the vehicle abruptly stopped. When I pressed the accelerator pedal the engine would rev and the truck would act like it was in park while in "d". I got out of the truck to inspect and found my driveshaft was no longer attached at the rear of the vehicle, to the transfer case. No abnormal noises were heard prior to this, or any running issues that would have indicated a problem. The truck will not move in forward position, but will roll backwards in neutral. Once I was able to remove the driveshaft from the transfer case and inspect, I found that the pinion nut had backed off and was still encased inside the rear flange attached to the driveshaft & u-joint. Fluid had been blown out and covered all of the rear axle and differential. I was able to roll my vehicle in neutral backwards out of the roadway. We hauled vehicle home using one of our other vehicles and a trailer with a come-a-long wench. Vehicle is still not repaired at this time. I have contacted Dodge directly at the dealer as well as through their customer service chat. Both instructed me that nothing could be done at this time. It was suggested that I fix the vehicle and that if a recall was released at a later date then reimbursement could potentially be issued. The reason I contacted Dodge was due to the fact that this is a known issue with model years that are slightly newer than my vehicle. A recall was issued for almost 300k vehicles for this exact same complaint. I feel Dodge should have done further investigation into how long they had been using this particular design for their rear differential pinion nut and extended the recall further.

2006 Dodge Ram 1500 slt trx4 while driving the 4lo lights starts to flash and tries to engage 4wd without turning the switch to 4hi or 4lo. Then the light stops flashing and the service 4wd light comes on and stays on. This goes on while driving the truck at normal and highway speeds. Also the transfer case 4wd actuator motor cycles while using keyless entry to access the vehicle. If the 4lo was to activate while driving at highway speeds this could cause an accident and potential loss of life.

I keep my truck in excellent maintainance. I was driving at 65 mph and transfer case exploded open sending drive shaft and parts into gas tank smashing guard plate and underside of chassis and body then twisting of while twisting pinion out of rear differential. I bounced over driveshaft and gained control as I coasted safely to the shoulder of roadway. Trailing drivers too were able to avoid lost parts and collision. Thank god. Ive consulted with 3 reputabe auto mechanics whom all agree the tranfer case would have to be faulty. I find it odd that this specific recall which was issued on so many 04 Ram 1500's but according to my trucks v. I. N. Dealer says/informed me that my trucks not covered. I dont beleive this is fair. Or the recall list is not comprehensive enough to include all the vehicles its supposed to. Please help.
While driving home from work, my Dodge ram truck rear axle locked up and threw the driveshaft out onto the road. Luckily no one was behind me. When I looked under the truck, there was transmission fluid everywhere. That's when I noticed the transfer case was cracked in half. I was left out in the middle of catfish lake road. Had to call family to come get me and called the tow truck company to have the truck towed back to the house. This incident happened on June 20, 2016 at approximately 08:00pm. I was on my way home from work. My truck could have flipped if I had not been able to keep it under control because the rear axle completely locked up. This could have resulted in a fatality.
Rear pinion nut, drive shaft recall. In novembe while driving the rear pinion nut came a loose sending the drive shaft into the transfer case completely breaking the whole thing ripped the rear gears and locking up wheels. After 2 mos. Of trying finally got a Chrysler Dodge dealer to accept my truck under the recall. After almost a mos. In shop $1100 worth of repairs that I had to pay for that werent there prior to the incident, I got my truck back 2 weeks later it happen again. This time it was just the transfer case that was damaged. Towed it back to dealership, this time I had to pay $400 because 4x4 sensor was bad and because of the year of my truck its sold with 2 other switches and they werent going to warranty the work if I didnt pay to have switches changed by them. Mind you the light wasnt on prior to this happening the 2nd time. I called chryler corp explained to them what was going on and they told me that there is nothing they can do and they dont get involved with there dealerships. Now here I am 2 weeks later took a road trip to georgia and boom it happened again while im driving I just see smoke coming out from under my truck, I manage to pull over and the transfer case explodes again. I get it to Dodge dealership in gwinnette they find out the drive shaft is bent and was never replaced from when it exploded the first time. It took Chrysler a week to respond to the dealership in gwinnette on how to procede. Its been 3 weeks havent gotten a return call from Chrysler. No accommadations have been made for me. Im stranded with no vehicle wasted my whole entire vacation. Vehicle still not repaired.
While driving down the road the rear end locked up causing the drive shaft to twist in half and the transfer case to bust into pieces. The truck spun out of control into a ditch. There was no warning, there are recalls online for other year models having this same problem but not for 2008. I truly believe this is the same problem with the pinion gear.
The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. While driving 40 mph, an abnormal noise was heard from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact did not recieved notification of NHTSA campaign number: 14v796000 (power train). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000. Updated 03/09/lj.
While driving at various speeds and also sitting at an idle, the truck tries to engage 4wd low. Dealership has replaced the front actuator, flashed the tipm on 8/28/15. Didn't leave the dealers lot and the truck was still shifting into 4wd on its own. Back to the garage it went. I would have thought the truck would have a built in safety so that it can not shift into 4wd low at high speeds. . . Been told it could be the ac pressure switch, tipm, transfer case actuator motor. Awaiting transfer case motor to be replaced at the moment. Still waiting for dealer to say that it is fixed. The truck is presenting unsafe driving conditions and the dealership can't find whats wrong with it. The problem still happens as of 9/20/15. Dealer has had my truck since 8/26/15 and still has it as of 9/20/15.

I was driving at approximately 25-30 mph the rear wheels locked up and I nearly lost control of the vehicle. I safely made it to the center turn lane. The truck would not drive, I could feel and hear a noise from underneath. I got out and looked underneath, the driveline had separated from the rear axle. I pulled the drive line from the transfer case put it in 4wd and tried to drive to a side street, but the rear axle was seized. After taking it to a mech to get fixed that night. I checked and apparently there is a recall for this issue. I do all my maintenance at the dealership where I bough the truck brand new and they never told me, nor did I see a letter in the mail. Had this happened at freeway speeds it surely would have cause a crash.

I was driving my truck down a back country road on the sway to work when I noticed a whistling sound coming from the truck. I began to slow down from 55mph and then I heard a loud bang underneath the truck. I got out to find the transfer case blown apart and the rear end was locked. This could have been a serious matter if I was driving on the highway or had not begun to slow down. Upon further investigation I have found many recalls on my truck. I also found out that this is going to run me around 3 grand, if the transmission isn't messed up.
The truck rattled and shook. Then the driveline rolled out from under the truck. Once stopped, inspected the truck and the rear axle was locked up, transfer case was cracked and the yoke on back of transfer case was broken.

Just picked vehicle from dealership for rebuild of rear end from recall p77. Drove vehicle three miles and felt a vibration then saw large amount of smoke. Pulled over and saw what appeared was grease or oil leaking onto exhaust. Called dealership to inform something was wrong. Upon my return and delivering vehicle to service I was informed that the transfer case had exploded. Dealership claimed had nothing to do with recall, however I find several cases of this same issue occurring due to differential failure.

The rear differential locked up and the driveshaft separated at the rear connection to the differential in model year 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup. There was little or no noise or other warning prior to the lock-up and separation. The pinion was forced into the rear differential causing the lock up and damaging the internals. The drive shaft with the u-joint attached fell to the ground and was pulled free of the transfer case. I was traveling a speed of < 35 mph and was unable to move the vehicle. The vehicle was towed and repaired. I am in possession of all damaged parts and have supporting repair documentation. I am aware there is a pending investigation with this issue.
I was driving down the road about 5 to 6 miles from home. When the rear end lock up. It broke the transfer case.
