(1)no events leading up to the failure. (2)rear end locked up at 55 mph, caused us to slide off the road and into the ditch. Truck had to be towed home. (3)replacement not available as it was discontinued. Parts are too expensive to be repaired at this time. Dealer quote on parts $3500. Failure at 92k miles on a $30k truck that is not a 4x4.

Keeper failure (clips) in 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup, replacement of rearend by the dealer (under warranty) out of pocket costs of $239. 00, what happens after warranty is up?? this is a huge problem with this rearend, have heard from many owners with same problem.
From 2002 to 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 pickups fitted with a 9. 25" corporate rear end differential complete with lsd. "c clips" which locate the clutch packs within the lsd, over time, slip out of place causing major damage to the carrier bearings usually leading up to a complete replacement of the entire axle assembly. Also, these clips can and do, foul the differential causing catastrophic damage to the ring and pinion gears etc ultimately leading to the locking of both wheels as the vehicle is moving. The potential for both wheels to suddenly become locked whilst at speed/moving in the truck, is lethal. Please note well I have filed this complaint using incorrect zip code/state information as you don't have the ability to submit a complaint from overseas, namely england. My full address is:- mr allan barmby. 7 stanhope gardens, belle-vue, middlesbrough, cleveland, ts4 2qa england. I'm submitting this complaint to you, as there is no one here in england who can help and in support of the many american friend I have in the us who have the same issues over this lsd c clip failure. Daimler Chrysler must be held accountable for this potentially disastrous defect and it should be dealt with free of charge on a recall basis.
: the contact stated the rear axle flange detached and the wheel separated from the vehicle. The dealership was contacted. Updated 10/25/2006 - as a result the consumer lost control of the vehicle and collided with a concrete wall.
Upon taking my vehicle in to have maintenance performed, I was notified of a problem with the clutch retainer clip in the rear differential. I was told the part would not be covered under warranty as I had not performed the service therefore they would not cover the replacement. The problem was that the clip broke inside the axle housing did not affect the performance and wore away the housing inside. There is no timeline to pinpoint how long this has been broken. The dealership stated that if not repaired the part would break and cause the rear end to lock up.
: the contact stated while driving 35 mph the rear axel fractured and came off the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, upon inspection the dealer stated the contact must have hit something to cause this failure.

The contact stated while making a right turn in 2005 Dodge ram the rear driver's side tire came off and went under the vehicle. He had the vehicle towed to a dealership , and they would not look at the vehicle because he did not buy it there. The contact paid to have it towed to the dealership where he purchased it. The manufacturer sent a field representative to inspect the vehicle. He found a broken axle, which caused the tire separation. The manufacturer refused to fix the vehicle under warranty. Therefore, there have been no repairs made to the vehicle . The contact stated the vehicle had never been off road, and there were no pot holes where the incident occurred. He has pictures of the location where the tire came off.
Front and rear axle seals leaking on drivers side. Rubbing sound on front wheel when cornering. Drove straight to mechanics when sound heard. Front wheel bearing was bad causing sound, was told it was very dangerous to drive. Replaced axle seals at time of wheel bearing. While replacing rear axle seals mechanics found a retaining washer half shattered in rear differential that holds the clutch plates solid for the anti-spin differential. Was told that if any more shatters off this could have dire consequences, including having the rear axle lock up solid while driving. Must have repaired immediately.

Left rear axle broke while backing up. .
While traveling on the highway at 55 mph the truck veered to the right on its own. Vehicle would not stop, causing it to go off of the road into a ravine. The rear wheel came off. Consumer was injured. Vehicle was towed, and the rear axle was found to be broken.
While stopping at a traffic light the consumer heard a breaking sound from the rear left side, but didn't think it came from vehicle. Two hours later, the noise occurred again, but louder. The vehicle immediately started spinning in the left direction until it crashed into a ditch and hit a concrete bearer. While spinning driver's door opened, and the seat connection in the middle broke. This was a bench seat. The driver's side slid forward, and the passenger's side slid backwards. When vehicle was picked up the rental store mechanic determined that the rear axle broke.
While driving 45 mph asphalt turned into gravel and vehicle hydro planed, landed on gravel, and passenger's side aluminum wheels broke. The vehicle hydro planed, again, twisted, and landed on roof. The vehicle was totaled. The driver sustained injuries, and was taken to hospital for surgery. The axle assembly failed.
I was on I-95 driving about 55 mph when a car cut in front of me then slammed on brakes. I had to slam on brakes to avoid this car. Then all of the sudden my drivers side rear wheel sheared off and spun me across the left lane of I-95 and into the steel cables in the middle. I was towing a car on a car trailer at the time. The truck was messed up pretty bad, the whole passenger side and bed are gone due to the steel cables in the middle. The car I was towing had damage to the front bumper and a side skirt. Me and my brother managed to make it out alright though.
Right rear axle assembly sheared causing engine to stall/loss of steering/control of the wehicle. Truck bed was empty and traveling at approx. 60mph; upon occurence vehicle rolled 3 times on busy highway; both driver and passenger injured.

2003 Dodge ram std cab 1500 4x2 5. 7l vehicle, about 9,000 miles on it, 4 months since purchasing it. While driving down the freeway at 75 mph the right rear tire/wheel assembly broke off the axle shaft. The vehicle spun out in the center median. Vehicle substained enough damage to have the insurance company say it was totaled. The dealership, southpoint Dodge, told me to contact daimler Chrysler. I put a claim in with DC customer service only to have it denied. I called DC corp. To ask if I could get a reason why and see their report on the subject and they denied me this information.
Vehicle has had repeated failures of rear axle components. All appear to be related to overstated towing capacity. After purchasing a trailer well within the vehicles tow rating the vehicle on the first trip out with the trailer exhibited a putrid smell that could not be located. This occurred on 07-25-03 at just under 8500 miles. The dealer could not locate the source of the smell, an independent garage found coagulated differential fluid and metal shavings in the rear axle. See your odi number 786051 for a similar case. The rear gears were replaced. On 12-01-03 at 10638 miles I was able to limp the truck with the trailer attached into southside Dodge/kia in kissimmee, FL. The entire rear axle was so badly damaged including the antilock brake sensors that the entire unit had to be replaced. On 12-06-03 my wife and I retrieved the trailer. The truck was having trouble maintaining expressway speeds into a headwind on this trip. Upon arrival at our home 265 miles later we again smelled the overheated rear axle fluid. Later inspection at the dealer showed it to be burnt smelling, and discolored. Further repairs are now awaited. I will be forwarding complete documentation today via usps.
Dodge hemi both wheels snapped at axle, brakes still on tires.
98 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab - the bearings in the rear end axle assemblies of these trucks fail prematurely. I have found many inquiries over the internet about this problem. All of the vehicles have low mileage (less than 100000 miles) and the bearings have worn out. There is a loud whining noise from the rear end assembly.

Wobble in the rear wheels which has caused me on a couple of occasions to almost lose control of the vehicle. I have notified daimlerchrysler of this problem also.
Wheels were locking up and almost caused an accident. He took it to the mechanic, had to have axle bearing s replaced.
Have experienced failure in passenger side rear axle 1998 Dodge ram. Going to open rear end on 5/26/03 for inspection. Have approx. 1/4 in horizontal movement in axle. From checking site conclude that this may not be isolated failure as first suspected but may be failure in heat treat of axle or bearing not set correctly. Vehicle has 68,200 miles.
Rear right axle seal has failed for the second time in less than 2 years. Rear right brake is rendered useless hence was a factor in an accident the 1st time the seals failed. Corporate rejects the claim as well as the dealership which "repaired" the seals last time. Customer is left to eat the cost. Nlm.
Per dealer service advisor, my trucks wheel sub-assembly was damaged from an over-torqued center nut (during manufacture assembly). This condition caused the bearings to seize and superheat, they have been cutting into the axle and the heat expansion caused the brakes to fail (locked on, but steering has not been pulling). Parts needing replacement include: axle; caliper; hub and bearings; rotor; center nut; center cap.

During normal operation of the vehicle at any speed, there is a loud "humming noise" coming from rear of truck. An independent mechanic diagnosed that bearings and gears for the rear axle have to be replaced. Please provide any additional information / documentation.
Right rear axle broke while driving 40-45 mph. Dealer and manufacturer have been notified. Consumer sent broken shaft to dealer for testing, but dealer denied any claims, stating that it was driver neglect, one person was injured in accident caused by the defective rear axle.
The rear axle bearings and seal had to be completely replaced. The problem was detected from hearing some rear axle noise. Ph **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**753546.
While driving at any speed consumer heard a squeaking sound coming from the rear axle of the vehicle. Rear pinion bearings were replaced five times. Dealer claimed that the problem was corrected. However, consumer insisted that the problem was still evident.

Driver proceeding along interstate at 60 mph with cruise engaged when felt a jolt in rear end and truck started fishtailing. Truck struck side barrier, spun, crossed 3 traffic lanes and came to stop. Right rear wheel assembly was detatched and had come to rest along shoulder. Subsequent department mechanic inspection revealed what appears to be shearing of axle, with center of axle appearing porous.
