The pinion nut has loosened up and that caused the driveshaft to become unstable and it has caused problems that have to be changed such as (crush slave, inner and outer bearings, spacers, and pinion nut) all have to be replaced. This same issue happened to the 2005 Dodge ram and they recalled those trucks just not the year of mine. I was driving my truck when this happened and it could have been extremely dangerous for my family and I and others on the road way if the driveshaft became unattached or the rear-end locked up on me.

While driving the vehicle came to a complete stop. It felt like someone had hit me from the back. When I got off to look I saw that no one had crashed into me. A bystander says that my drive shaft is on the floor. Had to call a tow truck to take home. Went to a Dodge dealer about the issue and stated that there was a recall on it. He said that the vehicle was taken to dealership 5 years ago. The problem was previously fixed. They can't do anything about it. I looked up some information and found that this has happened again to other drivers. All owners stated that issues were never resolved. My dad owns a 1999 Dodge 1500 and the drive shaft has never fallen off.

I was driving down the road at about a bout 50 mph down the road and started hearing a noise when letting off the throttle and slowed down a lil gave it some gas then let off again next thing I hear is the drive shaft hitting the road and the tires sliding across the road and causing me to slide across the road locally there was no traffic coming towards me I was able to control the slide of the rear tires to a stop on the side of the road. I got out and was looking what happen the pion nut came off the pion gear locking up the rear differential I think this is a safety issue because it could have ended up someone getting hurt and or killing someone in a crash. The truck is very well taking care of and has 108k miles low for its age and there was a recall on this before but on the 05 Dodge ram truck's that was made in 04 is what someone told me.

However, my VIN was not recalled. Multiple issues like this on this year also.

While driving on a major roadway in altamonte springs, FL. , with no warning, the rear differential failed and seized, locking up the rear wheels and shearing the driveshaft, and slamming me to a complete stop in traffic. As I was driving to my drs appointment in a city street at 40 mph. On February 11, 2018, while returning home from emt training, I heard a whining noise and then boom. Pinion nut backed off, dropped down into the gear area causing my drive shaft and yoke to break and my rear end to lock up, putting me into a skid. I found 35 other complaints where Chrysler corporation was notified and nothing was done. I also found out that the 2wd trucks were recalled but not the 4wd. When I contacted Chrysler corporation, I was told to keep my receipts and if any recalls were to come they would contact me. Chrysler knows of the problem but will do nothing about it. They put my life and my families lives in danger and will not honor their mistake. . Read more...
My wife and I were driving at about 55 mph and next thing we know we heard a very loud bang and then my rear end locked up and about caused us to hit the car beside us once I was able to pull over safely I got out and found my driveshaft separated from the rear end so I had it towed to the local mechanic and he had informed me that my pinion nut had came loose and backed out that it was not properly torqued I have contacted the dealership and the corporation of ram and neither will own up to it even though they informed me there was a pending recall for my year model for that pinion nut and they also informed me that I do have the same rear end as the 05 model that did have a recall on the pinion nut which is the 9. 25 ring gear Chrysler rear end but they said since mine is a 2002 they can do nothing about it and that I am stuck with paying for repairs for something that should've never happened on a truck with 124,000 miles and something that could've injured my wife and I and I've seen a lot of reports of this same thing happening to people atleast once I don't see why this is not a recall because I see it as a huge saftey issue.
Vehicle was in motion on city street rear pinion nut came loose and cause catastrophic damage to the drive shaft and rear end of the truck.
Slt quad cab 2wd hemi 5. 7 automatic 5sp with only 49975 miles on odometer. Driving along about 15 mph in a parking lot, then all the sudden out of no where, the rear tires locked, the entire truck shooked violently and then I heard my drive shaft hitting the ground. Got out saw the yoke still attached to driveshaft and gear oil flowing out of differential. I then put my truck in neuteral with motor still running and attempted to push my truck out of the way but couldn't do so. The rear axle was locked up. 3 guys got out of their cars to help me push it and couldn't. Then I saw the skid marks and knew the rear end failed. Tow truck driver said this was a common problem with Dodge transmissions and that there was an aftermarket repair kit that will keep this c clip from falling out that caused this failure. Truck's in the shop getting rear axle rebuilt. Estimated repair is $2500.
