While driving the vehicle on a flat, paved road a sudden small grinding noise was detected. Without warning, the rear axle froze and the rear wheels locked up. While driving home a noise started to occur when letting off gas pedal, got louder the more I drove, I drive 25 miles to and from work, well as I was coasting to slow to enter my driveway (I live in the country) and the then boom and no power rear end locked right at end of my drive and would not move, found drive shaft gone and pinion was pulled into differential, stopped in the middle of as state route had to drag truck off of road removed cover and found rear end chewed up, my question is why is Dodge only coving this rea end back to 2005 and not to when they started using it in 2002, glad it didn't happen in heavy traffic, I would have been hurt or worse someone else would have.

Heard grinding noise in back of truck driving straight at 45 mph on highway , truck skidded to a stop and I found the driveshaft at the back differential had broken off. Could not move truck in drive, 4wd or push in neutral due to the back diff locked up. Back wheels locked due to differential. Mechanic diagnosis is it needs a whole new differential and driveshaft. Highway was single lane with on coming traffic and I was lucky to miss a head on collision.
Driving on a 3 lane heavily trafficked road, and all of a sudden my drive shaft falls out of my truck. This locked my wheels up, started shaking my truck violently. I was extremely lucky that someone was not directly behind or adjacent of me because it would've resulted in a sure collision.
My 2006 Ram 1500 suddenly dropped the driveshaft on the highway last night with no warning or noises until it just dropped from the rear differential. I was going about 70 mph when it happened and was lucky enough to get off the interstate and slow down to about 30 mph when the rear end locked up and I couldn't go anywhere. The pinion nut apparently backed off enough for the driveline to just fall down. I called Dodge about the issue and they said there were no recalls for this problem on 2006 Ram 1500 trucks.

I was approaching a stop. There was a slight whine as I decelerated. Then a clunk and a loud bang. The rear wheels locked up and I stopped immediately in the middle of the road. The driveshaft had fallen out from the differential and was on the ground. I was only going 25-30 mph at the time. Luckily I had just gotten off the highway. I had it towed to the dealer and they said the pinion nut had come loose. My wife was looking on the internet and found this problem had been a recall but the dealer said it was VIN specific and mine wasn't included in the recall. They need to expand the recall!!! if it had happened just a few minutes earlier I could have been involved in a deadly crash.

This vehicle has given me many problems and most recently very dangerous ones. A few months ago on my way to work around 4am the drive shaft broke off and flew out at 75 mph. Luckily there wasn't much traffic during that time and the back part of the drive shaft is the one that broke off not the front so the truck didn't flip over. The truck has been repaired since then. Now a few days ago my pregnant wife was driving the truck and it turned off on her in the middle of an intersection while I was working out of town. On my return I found the electric throttle control light on at the dashboard. In doing some research I found that this is typically in relation to a bad fuel pump relay. I found this to be more than common on many Dodge vehicles and obviously a very dangerous problem to have. The fuel pump relay on my vehicle seems to be integrated into the tipm and not serviceable. There also seems to not be a recall for this problem. It now appears I am being forced to spend $1200 on a manufacturer defect. This vehicle has gone from being my daily commuter to a huge liability because I am not sure what will happen next.
I have reported this issue several times now, I took my vehicle to dealership for replacement of pinion nut on driveshaft to prevent the driveshaft from seperating from the rear end of the truck. My vehicle continues to lock up, rear wheels will lock up when vehicle in put in reverse or in drive, this issue is related to the driveshaft pinion (seperation) and could cause a catastrophic collision endangering my family and any other vehichle in close vicinity of mine while driving. I am afraid to drive my truck due to this issue, I have also considered what will happen when my truck is catapulted from this issue, hoping that my family will be able to file a class action lawsuit against Chrysler/Dodge for ignoring mine complaints and refusing to fix the problem, once I am killed in an accident from this recall issue. I am very upset that I am not getting any help from Dodge for this issue. I know I'm just the little one who bought your product, and care none about me and my family, however, you can and will be sued if I am in an accident due to this recall issue, (my rear axle locking up therefore locking up my rear wheels). Everytime I try to move my vehicle, I hear a loud "boom" in the rear of the vehicle and my rear wheels lock up and vehicle won't move. I will hear a loud "boom" in the rear end of the truck while driving. I am very afraid to drive the truck due to this recall issue, and due to the fact that my wheels continously seize up. This has happened at least 20 times in the past month, thank god I have not yet been catapulted, I fear though that it will happen very soon.

While in motion pinion nut came loose drive shaft fell off vehicle rear axle locked up I was able to regain control of the vehicle and avoid crash and injury to others, this is the second incident where I could have been seriously injured due to pinion bearing and nut coming loose, Dodge took care of this issue on 11/09/10 at 150,768 and this occurred again on 2/17/17 at 187,568 vehicle has only been driven about 36,000 and has failed again I believe this is the same issue the 05,09,10 ram models were recalled for but Dodge continues to deny.

Rear end seized and driveshaft fell out of rear end. Was driving around 35-40 mph on street. Lost all control of the truck and braking system and wrecked into an enbankment/ditch.
It looks like the pinion nut came loose and allowed the drive shaft to come off while we were driving on a secondary road. The rear wheels locked up. I see where there was an issue with 2005 vehicles made from January 2004-August 2005. Ours is a 2004 and was made in March 2004.
Driving straight in town at 30 mph when rear-end locked up. With no warning, no sounds, no grinding, squealing, or shimmying, the truck skidded about 20 yds before the driveshaft literally ripped in half, with both halves shooting out from under the truck in different directions. Pinion bearing already had been replaced about a year prior after feeling some grinding and hearing sounds, but has run smooth as butter since. I had my last oil change and inspection at take ten about a month ago. Rear end remained locked up with driveshaft removed (obliterated) when the tow truck got there. Glad I was not on the highway, or myself and 7 year old son may have not survived.

Tamara recall I recently was driving down the highway to pick up my child from his fathers in ohio my truck. We are driving down route 8 north going 45 and all of a sudden we here this noise and shaking and the drive shaft literally just snapped off, we ran over it. We end up swirving all over the place , it locks up and won't move , I proceed to get out of the truck and pick up the pipe up off the road and the bolts are broken off in the ends . Very dangerous. Could of hurt my child and myself. I called aaa and had it towed home.

While driving down a hill at aprox 45mph I heard a loud bang and my drive shaft hit the ground and my differential locked up due to pinion nut backing off. I had no clue anything was going to happen. Thank god my family wasn't injured or killed.
The bolt attaching the drive shaft to the rear differential pinion came off and the drive shaft fell off. The pinion was then able to slide back and lock the differential carrier causing the rear axle and tires to lock in place, the dealer explained this is a problem and they actually recalled the 2005 model for the same problem. Because I was never made aware that this needed to be checked, severe damage has occurred which will cost several thousand to fix. I was fortunate this happened on a side road going 30 mph, if this happened on a highway or worse yet while hauling a trailer, chances are a major accident would have happened (serious safety risk). There needs to be some kind of notification to other ram truck owners that this may occur and the simple fix or maintenance that is needed.
Rear axle recall. My 2009 Dodge ram was part of a recall regarding rear axle problems where rear axle could lock up. Recall work was performed by the dealer but did not solve the problem. On may 7 2016 at approximately 7pm my rear axle locked up while driving down the highway. The rear yoke broke away from the rear axle assembly and driveshaft was almost twisted in half.
