1 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 09/10/2016

On 9/9/2016 my wife entered our garage to get something and found the garage filled with exhaust fumes due to my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 engine running. Obviously, it was parked without anyone in it. However, no one had the keys in their hands and there was no key in the ignition. It randomly started on it's own. I filed a complaint before about it randomly locking and unlocking doors, and it randomly having all lights go out while driving. This one, a random start when parked in a garage could turn fatal. This is a dangerous issue.

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. While driving 40 mph, smoke appeared from the engine compartment into the cabin. The contact merged the vehicle to the shoulder of the road. The fire department was notified; however, the fire was extinguished by a state highway employee. A fire report was filed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be inspected. The contact was informed that the firewall insulation under the hood of the vehicle had separated and fell onto the exhaust system, which caused the engine compartment fire. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 144,000.

Exhaust resonance at 1500 rpm on 5. 7 liter mds vvt engine. Have made 7 trips to two dealerships. Dealerships unable to correct. Have contacted Dodge three times. Manufacturer thinks it is connected with the mds but will not cover under warranty. Dealerships can not say if this will have an adverse affect on the engine over time.

6 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 06/10/2009

Continuing issue with egr valve, after about 5 minutes of research I can see this is a wide spread issue. Also, after discussing with several mechanics this is a not a valve that should go out in the first four years. Truck idles rough and stalls at slow speeds, valve is evidently faulty or other piece of system, whether that's solenoid, fuse, electrical connection, sensor is faulty. Cannot believe after reviewing that there is not a recall on this valve. Also, very difficult to find particular part in-stock at any parts stores.

7 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 05/13/2009

On going problem with Dodge Ram 1500 trucks. They contain a faulty exhaust gas recirculation (egr) valve. The sensor causes trucks to stall out when driving at slower speeds under 40 mph. With loss of power loose power steering and power brakes. I would also imagine affects exhaust emissions as gas mileage severely drops when egr valve is going out. Trucks engine malfunction indicator light usually comes on. If you go to dealership will charge you $175 to tell you why indicator light came on. If you turn the key on-accessory, on-accessory, on-accessory and finally on rapidly, will show you error code on odometer for free. Usually will get a p0404, p0405 or p0406 code which is the egr valve out or on its way out. If you search the internet you will see hundreds of postings with ones regarding vehicles stalling out. Something needs to be done before some unlucky person is involved in a collision due to loss of power.

8 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 04/11/2009

At about 1200 miles on vehicle noticed a low squeal sound from engine or transmission. At present there is 1500 miles on vehicle and the squeal has gotten worst. The noise begins after about one or two minutes of starting, and is contumely squealing. The dealer ship ran test and said it was normal. I drove another 2009 1500 ram and the noise was not there, or in the next 1500 ram from another dealership. Dealership refuses to go any further with the problem, quote: we cant figure where the noise is coming from, so it must be normal unquote. Vehicle is swb.

11 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 03/31/2008

Bolt on exhaust manifold broke causing exhaust leak. Bolt had to be drilled out and replaced along with the exhaust manifold. Repair shop said this is common on Dodge vehicles. Bolt receives too much vibration and heat.

12 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 03/25/2008

I started noticing my truck wanting to lose power when getting to a low cruising speed; approximately 25 - 30mph's. The truck would start to rev up and down, bouncing the rpm's from 900 to about 1600 as if you were tapping the gas pedal. Then the next occasion while it was happening, I came to a stop light and the truck completely died/shut off. Now its been happening for about a week or so and now when I go to take off from a dead stop, I have to really get on the pedal to make it take off. I took the truck in to see what was wrong with it when the check engine light came on, they reported a 406 error reading: the egr value was not functioning correctly. I went to my local Dodge dealership and they told me that they have been having this problem alot with the vehicles coming back. . . Come to find out, that is not covered under any type of warranty.

13 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 07/28/2007

The catalytic converter was replaced in 2007 under warranty. Dodge states it is bad again. Truck now has 64000 miles on it. Also the drivers side front bearing and spindle had to be replaced in 2009 because of a the same problem in the 2006 model due to insufficient lubrication at factory.

Failure Date: 04/01/2007

2004 Dodge Ram 1500 5. 7 liter. Last year I took it to the dealer after it stall several times they could not duplicate problem nor did it give them any error code. My truck currently has a noise that sounds like an exhaust leak will take to dealer.

15 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 02/15/2007

The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500. After putting 400 miles on the vehicle, it began overheating while driving uphill at an unknown speed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they replaced the transmission cap. When the windows were rolled down, they would not go back up. In addition, the headlights would dim when the windows were rolled up and down. While driving between 5-10 mph uphill, the exhaust system fell off the vehicle. The bolts were not properly tightened. The cd changer had to be replaced after failing twice. There was also a grinding noise in the transmission when the shifter was placed into gear, and there was a hesitation when placing the gear into reverse or drive. The transmission has been rebuilt, but the vehicle is still grinding and hesitating when placed into gear, drive, or reverse. On may 22, 2008, the vehicle will be taken to the dealer for the driveshaft to be replaced in hopes that the grinding will cease. The current mileage was 73,500 and failure mileage was 400.

16 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 01/29/2007

Since buying my 2005 Dodge crewcab 1500 pickup I have been experiencing bad headaches. I went to a number of doctors and underwent a number of tests. No cause for my ongoing headaches could be found. Last weekend my oldest son and I went on a several hour trip in the truck and we both became sick. On a hunch I stopped and purchased a carbon monoxide tester and when placed in the cab of the truck it sounded an alarm. In the next few days I tried the alarm many times and on all occasions it sounded an alarm. I feel that there is some fault with this truck that is allowing, or causing, carbon monoxide into the cab of the truck.

17 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 06/01/2006

While hauling approx. 4000lbs horse trailer, the vehicle lost power and I was barely able to keep the truck traveling at 20mph. I took it in for service and it was determined that the catalytic converter had failed, resulting in a blockage of the exhaust system. Apparently, Chrysler had recalled 1. 9 million of these catalytic converters because of the exact problem, but after I contacted Chrysler, they said my VIN was not part of the recall. I spent over $800 to replace miscellaneous exhaust components as a result of this failure.

18 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 03/09/2006

I have a complaint just as the gentleman below me. I have came extremely close to having accidents so many times that it worries me to drive this truck any where any more. 5-8 times per week the engine stalls. Usually when slowing down to a stop or turning. Sometimes while accelerating at traffic lights. Check engine light is on with the codes po404 & po406 set (egr valve) serviceman at dealership said if not replaced, it can cause other damages to the engine. ***2005 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab 4. 7l v8. 3-4 times / week the engine stalls while driving less than 10 mph, usually while slowing down to stop and sometimes while accelerating slowly. Check engine light is on with engine codes p0404 & p0406 set (egr valve) talked to service department at Dodge dealership. They said that this is a common problem with this model and that Dodge isn't doing anything to correct it unless I pay to have them fix it. The egr valve apparently has a design flaw and prone to fail. ***.

19 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 11/16/2005

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 quadcab lwb. While driving various speeds, the vehicle stalls and the service engine light illuminates. 20 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 09/25/2005

Noticed on September 25, 2005 the engine has been making a loud ticking noise. Took the vehicle to two different dealers, one said it was the valve train ,and the other dealer said it was exhaust system echoing. Both dealers said it was normal for the vehicle to sound like that. Could stand two to three hundred feet away and hear it roar, and even if im inside a vehicle. When first starting it up it doesn't make the sound right away. But once the vehicle is warmed up it makes this sound every time when driving the vehicle .

21 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 08/31/2005

This vehicle has had an ongoing ignition problem. It finally became noticeable in front of my mechanic. After much diagnosis it was found that the #5 cylinder of the engine had zero compression. A pressure test was performed, and found that no pressure could be held in the cylinder because it was going directly out the exhaust valve. Engine was disassembled and the cylinder head was found to have cracks between the intake and exhaust valves on 3 out of 4 cylinders, with number 5 being the worst. The opposite side cylinder head was also removed and found to have cracks in the same places (between the intake and exhaust valves in at least 2 of the 4 cylinders. The heads are not reparable. Upon calling a machine shop I was informed that this is a common problem with oem cylinder heads for this engine (5. 9l) 360 magnum. I also called several wrecking yards and found the same problem. None had any heads that were salvageable. They all had cracks in them. In my mind this is clearly a design problem that the daimler/Chrysler corporation. Should have known about, and probably does. Yet, no recall or TSB has been found to exist. These cylinder heads are a costly item and should have been manufactured to last much longer than they have.

22 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 07/06/2005

I own a 2004 Dodge ram with the 5. 7 hemi engine. The engine in my truck has stalled on numerous occasions when slowing down and going into a turn. Once on the freeway at 65 mph! this happens most when turning on city streets or pulling into a parking lot. The dealer has flashed the pcm 3 times and it still has the problem. The last time it was in for this problem the dealer screwed with the timing, fuel air mixture and idle all in poor attempt to keep it from stalling. The results are poorer fuel mileage, occasional black smoke from exhaust, stalls at idle, the engine stumbles and soot build-up in the exhaust pipes. Oh, it stills stalls while turning sometimes. The dealer and the regional Dodge rep are both dragging their feet. The truck is unsafe to drive. It has 20" tires and wheels(factory)which make it even harder to steer when the engine dies and you also lose the power brakes too. Real waker upper.

23 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 06/02/2005

Check engine light has come on. Code shows problem to be catalytic converter.

24 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 03/19/2005

The consumer stated that inspection was done on vehicle and the hood was found to be corroded. Rusting activity was present at time of purchase. There was an exhaust pipe leak mid-point underneath the truck. The inspector stated that this was a major safety concern due to possible intrusion into cab area while driving. Also, exhaust system muffler, catalytic converter, and pipe showed signs of extreme overheating. Heavy deposits of dry fluffy carbon was evident inside the tail pipe. Indication of rich fuel mixture that will cause overheating with possibility of fire. Suppose to be new 2005 4x2 ram single cab.

On two separate occassions, evap components, (vapor cannisters) attached to the frame underneath the passenger seating on the right side of the vehicle have been damaged due to road hazard and are not covered under warranty. Their location makes them susceptible to damage and they are expensive to replace and are not repairable.
