Dodge Ram 1500 owners have reported 9 problems related to steering knuckle spindle (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500. While driving 35 mph, the hub loosened at the knuckle and the brakes failed. The contact pulled off the road and the vehicle was towed to a repair shop. A diagnostic was performed and the mechanic stated that they could not repair the failure because it was a wearable part. They further stated that the failure was caused by the lack of maintenance. The vehicle was towed from the dealer to the contact's residence because it was unable to be driven. The failure mileage was 58,290.

Truck swerved to miss a dear in the road, when turning back, left front wheel came off truck, spindle shaft broke at bearing, causing truck to roll over, truck was totaled and driver injured, a couple small contusions, hit head and bruised elbow. Truck had 12000 miles on it. No correction taken, truck is totaled. When wheel came off truck, truck was starting to skid, wheel did not come into contact with anything but the paved surface, was not struck by anything. I believe the spindle shaft failed, witch should not fail under such conditions, I am a certified Ford technician. It should take a very hard impact for the spindle to fail if at all.

The left front tire came loose on the Dodge Ram 1500. The truck took a hard left turn into the concrete divider on the interstate approximate speed 65 mph. The impact broke the rear left wheel, and crushed the front left fender, as well as the entire front of truck. The air bags did not deploy. However, I hear of a potential lining recall that might have affected this. My brother thankfully only had minor injuries that we are aware off.

2001 Dodge ram with less than 40,000 miles and the bearings and steering knuckle went out and the wheel came off. Did not wreck but only because my husband was driving and he is a professional driver. Had I been driving we could have had a serious wreck and injured or even killed all 6 of us in the vehicle.

My husbands 6 month old Dodge Ram 1500 2002 tire came off while driving and caused a terrible accident. I was behind him in my car and had to pull him out of the truck. The aluminum spindal broke in half. Whcih many mechanics have looked at it and stated that this is what caused this truck to wreck. The airbags defaulted his body impression was in the steering wheel. The front left tire came completely detached from vechile.

My wife was driving the truck when it began making a noise and the wheel began to wobble. When she stopped, the wheel was wobbly. Her dad investigated the cause thinking it was a bearing going out but found out that the spindle nut that holds the wheel on had backed off. The wheel has never been worked on and it had the new type of nut that does not have a kotter pin in it and is the type that is "self locking". Needless to say, it did not lock and could have caused an accident if the wheel had come completely off.
I was hauling a round bale of hay home when the left front wheel almost fell of the truck. I lost control of the truck but was lucky enough to get it stopped before I hit anyone. I had the truck hauled to owensville motors and they found that the left front spindle nut had stripped off and the left front bearing went out bending the knuckle, ruining the rotor, brake pad, caliper, tire, abs sensor, and the seals in the axle. I am very lucky not to have been hurt or have hit anyone else when I lost control of the truck. The only thing that held the tire on was the brake. This should never have happened and I feel this is definetly a safety issue. I could have had a very serious accident and been hurt or hurt someone else. The spindle nut should never have been able to come completely off causing the wheel to almost fall off. I am also wondering if this has been reported by anyone else.
While driving 55 mph right knuckle arm broke, causing safety problems. Consumer notes vehicle did not hit a pothole. Cause unknown.
