Dodge Ram 1500 owners have reported 6 problems related to steering noise (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
If I get a little bump on the highway I lose control of my steering for a few seconds and it goes back to normal, its been like that for years. But lately in the past 3 months there has been a strange noise coming from my steering box and wheels mainly on the driver side like if I'm dragging something and as if my steering is falling apart. This has been a major concern that I recently stopped driving it.

Truck started squeaking then making a popping noise while turning in the driveway. The steering wheel makes a noise while turning. Didn't know there was any recalls on this truck. I took it to the shop and the man said the wheel was about to come off.

When operating the vehicle whether under a load or not, using sustained higher rpm's the steering wheel will freeze up and there is absolutely no steering available. This has happened in the mud pulling a trailer, in snow navigating a little hill and now on the interstate entrance ramp! twice just changing lanes going around 30 mph! the two little times I knew to lower the rpm's very quickly and observed a loud pop noise when the steering wheel let loose. On the entrance ramp to the interstate I came so close to a concrete wall before the steering came back. I took it in to the dealership and they kept it for 3 days. All they said was unable to duplicate. I duplicated it the very next week. Along with cold weather stalling at red lights. I do not think they looked at it or took it seriously. The vehicle when it did this in the mud and snow I at first thought it was a rock lodged into the wheel but then later realized it froze up.

My girlfriend's son was driving our 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 going about 35 or 40 miles per hour (he and his girlfriend were taking a ride waiting for a pizza) so just mosing along thank god . He rounded a curve and lost steering he tried to jerk it back and said it made a cracking noise and he had no steering ability. He ran off the road striking trees, knocked himself out by hitting his head on the drivers side window. When he came to, his girlfriend was knocked out. He got her alert and called 911. She was life flighted, 5 broken ribs, major concussion and he had cuts and scratches and a concussion. He was treated and released. I asked the insurance adjuster to check it but he looked at it (never tore the steering column apart) and said it looked ok. They moved it to a salvage yard. Since the accident 3 people have told me they had the same problem with their Ram 1500. Now her son is being fined for driving too fast around the curve. . Guess it is always a fine never a true accident anymore, but I am just thankful that the kids are both alive as the truck was totaled from the trees and stumps they hit. Her son feels he may have leaned on the gas pedal when he was knocked out but knows he was only going 40 mph tops prior to the steering failing.
