1 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2017 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 04/08/2021

At roughly 77,500 miles our engine starting misfiring both while stationary and in motion. The check engine light came on. We pulled code p0305, indicating cylinder #2 misfire. We replaced the coils and spark plugs and the engine continued to misfire. We then began hearing fluid moving behind our dash board and noticed that the coolant tank was low but no visible coolant leak was found. We took the car to a local Ford dealer's service center (woodhouse Ford - omaha, ne) for inspection and diagnosis. They confirmed that engine coolant was leaking into cylinder #2, causing the misfire. It was also leaking into the heating element, causing a putrid smell in the cab of the vehicle and the rushing fluid sound behind the dashboard. They confirmed this is related to Ford TSB 19-2346. Ford stated that the repair requires a $6300 replacement engine and they are not liable for the damage to the engine as a result of their defect. Per the TSB, this engine defect may result in engine fires but fortunately it did not get to this point for us.

2 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2017 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 10/12/2020

My check engine light came on spent 500 dollars to have spark plugs and ignition coil replaced. Then not even 2 weeks later check engine is on again same issue again. Apparently break fluid is leaking due to a recall, but there is no fix for this problem. And I want my money back for what was fixed due to it being there problem.

3 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2007 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 02/12/2020

While traveling from work to home had a lost of power and started making noise upfront so pulled over and checked everything and it was fine fluids checked regularly and was told it could be a ptu problem and it has the jerking and sometimes you hear a chain noise and sounds like a slapping sound. Has something leaking up by tranny pretty sure its the ptu cause that's exactly where's it's located and have read lots of things online and everything. Their should really be recall for the ptu unit before someone majorly gets hurt cause of the loss of power all of sudden when traveling. Was traveling highway home.

4 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2013 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 06/10/2019

I bought a used 2013 Ford Edge: sport trim, 3. 7l awd with 84,000 miles on June 8th. Inspection was fine. I drove it home 1400 miles the next 2 days, and never drove it hard at all. It rained the whole way. Driving felt a bit odd at times, though I attributed that to my unfamiliarity with the new vehicle. Upon arriving home I had the oil changed and was informed that there was a major transmission leak. Upon my re-inspection, it was dripping at every stop, sometimes leaving 2-5" diameter puddles. I took it to the Ford dealership where they diagnosed that transmission was fine, but the power transfer unit was leaking and the entire unit needed replacement. Cost of repair, $1800. Upon researching, the unit which claims to have a "lifetime fluid" of gear-oil has a serious design flaw in which the unit is not properly cooled, and the "lifetime fluid" breaks down due to heat, causing the unit to fail. This serious design flaw could have caused my trip through the rain to have resulted in a catastrophic failure that would have endangered my safety, the vehicle's performance in the rain, and the lives of others. This is not an isolated incident. I am now stuck unable to drive the vehicle because I can't afford the $1800 repair, and driving the vehicle in this condition is dangerous. This part needs to be recalled ASAP, and Ford needs to take responsibility for this defective part before someone gets killed.

5 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2013 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 06/08/2019

I found spots of fluid on my garage floor and in my driveway that was leaking from my car. Ford dealer informed me this fluid is leaking from transmission ptu.

6 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2013 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 05/22/2019

2013 Edge with 53,000 miles - 3-4 months out of the power train warranty. Experienced intermittent noises when vehicle is cold (I. E. Grinding noise, engine running irregular, and faint humming at engine/transmission). This only happened approximately 3-4 times total with many days in between while the vehicle is moving. Very slight at first and progressed and became little more pronounced. When I would stop, the engine was calm and still. I would wonder if it was even still running. It took the dealership over a week to diagnose because it was intermittent and the mechanic had to continue to drive it before it happened again. Finally, formally diagnosed 5/22/19 as a failed ptu. No fluid leaks and all seals intact. Very little price break on labor and/or parts. The dealership refers you to corporate Ford for any part and/or warranty complaints. Since there was no core charge, I did request that the failed part be returned after replacement. Without intervention to force Ford to acknowledge that there is problem, this part will continue to be produced and installed on vehicles. Lastly, with the foreknowledge mentioned above about this vehicles' ptu issues. I would certainly hesitate to buy any Ford Edge or flex because of this substandard part that should be recalled for consumer safety reasons. Keep in mind that the fix is only to put this same poorly designed replacement part back on the vehicle - only to wait for it to possibly fail again.

Failure Date: 07/17/2015

Driving and a major road the car suddenly slowed down, it looked like someone put the brakes on, someone almost hit me from the back. After that, the car was jerking and shaking and made load noises. Unable to drive the car in drive I put the car on low gear and drove to the dealer. I was told yesterday that it is a transmission problem the cost 5,200 dollars. In November 2014 the car was leaking transmission fluid and was told it was the ptu the car only had 62,000 miles. I was told that was not covered and cost me 1,800 dollars.

11 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2008 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 11/22/2014

While preparing to stop at a light, seemed to have lost all power. Speedometer dropped to zero, airbag light came on and odometer was blank with a readout in its place that said something like odo failure also the wrench icon lit up. Shifted to park and the car jumped and jerked and loud grinding noises came from transmission. Was able to creep to a side street. Turned off engine . Waited several minutes , restarted car and the instrument panel returned to normal. Drove home about 3 miles. Took it to shop and they said it was a shaft seal. They replaced it for $182. 00 the part was $12. Got home and it leaks very badly it has leaked about a cup of fluid in 4 hours. (this was parked / not running) I am taking it back to the shop and hoping they can fix it right. I have been driving for over 30 years and never had this kind of problem.

14 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2007 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 01/09/2014

I was traveling on 95 north in s. Carolina when my car jerked and everyone lurched forward in the vehicle as if we had traveled over a speed bump or something large in the road. It was mid day and nothing was in the road. We continued traveling and about 30 miles it happened again and we realized it was the transmission. We were fortunate to make it home and took it to our mechanic. He saw no visual signs of trouble such as leakage, warning lights or check engine lights even during the test drive so he did an internet search and found that Ford suggest running transmission fluid through, draining and repeating. He did this. We had to travel out of state again the next month and the same problem occurred on the highway. I'm so concerned for my family and I'm now reading on the internet that this is not just a random issue and people are pleading for a safety recall before someone is hurt or killed due to the multiple transmission issues that are affecting so many of these vehicles. We need help, what does it have to take?.

15 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2007 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 01/03/2014

After 3 different seal repairs and ptu replacement(20k) during warranty period, current ptu is whining / howling between 30-50 mph. Dealer say fluid has been leaking slowly and ptu full of sludge. No evidence of leakage on garage floor but under carriage in ptu area is gummed up from fluid mixing with dirt. Based on mileage from repair receipts, took approx. 67k miles for this ptu to go bad. No adjustment programs at this time for ptu's as per phone call with Ford customer service.

16 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2008 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 10/23/2013

The car is leaking transmission fluid at the ptu seal.

17 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2008 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 01/26/2013

The transmission failed. As I was driving down the road it clunked very loudly as it shifted and then wouldn't change gears. I stopped at a light and the car would not move. The engine was running but the car would not go. By downshifting manually I was able to move forward and then got it to the dealer. They diagnosed it as drive and reverse engage but it neutrals out in 4th, 5th and 6th. They found metal shavings and chunks in a sample of the fluid drained. We bought the car used from Ford. It was a buy back from the previous customer because of leaky axel seals that could not be resolved. Had the same issue and the dealer replaced seals and things seemed to be okay. Transmission always clunked randomly; dealer thought it was mounts. Once we got new transmission we realized the old one always had problems. This new one shifts completely smoothly, which in retrospect the old one did not.

18 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2007 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 12/22/2010

Bought the car used from a Ford dealer with 46,138 miles and purchased an extend warranty 07/17/2010 in Dec 2010 noticed a smell from car , took it to a local repair shop, he printed me out the Ford TSB 09-25-7 that identified the problem with the right hand int shaft leak on the power transfer unit (ptu) I took to a local Ford dealership, they confirmed the problem and fixed, under the original car warranty. (55,799 miles) in Aug 2012 noticed the same smell, went an other Ford dealership(9-12-12), same problem with ptu seals, and not covered under the extended warranty. Paid approximately $800 to repair. In may 2014 same smell again, took back to the dealer who did the last repair (6-27-14), ptu again, except this time it needed seals plus a new ptu over $1,400 to repair. The smell comes from the fluid dripping onto the exhaust, not sure how toxic or flammable it is but I know it can't be good for you. This is not caused by miss use of the car or lack of maintenance. It is Ford poor design, and I realize mistakes happen, but stand behind your product.

19 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2007 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 01/07/2009

Burning smell originating from failed seal (now on national backorder this past year) in ptu assembly on most Ford Edge and Mercury mkx models. I've had my vehicle in the shop 3 times over the past year and they do not have replacement ptu assemblies in stock as the company who made them are now out of business. Transmission fluid leaks from ptu assembly onto exhaust, into vents and into our lungs. Vehicle is still in the service area at midway Ford in roseville, mn. They say I can drive it until they find a part, however it is winter and that is not an option as the windows must remain open. . Read more...

20 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2007 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 12/01/2008

The contact owns a 2007 Ford Edge. The contact stated that there was a leak in the vehicle and all of the transmission fluid leaked out. He took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the oil seal on the transmission. A few days later, he smelled transmission fluid burning. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer and they replaced the seal once again; however, the burning odor is still present. He believes that this is a health hazard and that a recall should be issued. The failure mileage was 34,000 and current mileage was 47,000.

21 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2007 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 11/04/2008

I have a 2007 Ford Edge awd. Around 15,000 miles, it began to have a "burned rubber" smell waft into the passenger compartment whenever I came to a stop after driving for awhile. Sometimes I could see smoke sift up through the hood near the windshield. The dealer found the ptu valve (power transfer unit) to be leaking, and I think they changed it. It worked for awhile, but within 4 months, it began to smell again. It was not too bad because it was spring and summer and the problem is only really bad during the winter when the heater is on. It's now October 2009, and I'm using the heater again. The smell was bad, so I took it to the dealer again. They said grease was packed into the valve, and the grease had overflowed. They did not replace the ptu valve. They only steam cleaned my car. It still smells, although not as bad. I have 35,000 miles on the car and I've owned it for 1. 5 years brand new. The internet has revealed that many Fordedge owners are experiencing the same thing, but Ford can't seem to fix it. It is only on awd models because the fluid that is leaking involves the transfer of power to the back tires. There is a website dedicated solely to this problem: stinkinedge. Com please help us convince Ford this is a defect involving a noxious smell and potentially dangerous chemical exposure. It is also annoying and uncomfortable. There seems to be no fix.
