I am filing a consumer complaint against Ford motor company regarding a known, severe safety defect in my 2013 Ford Edge 3. 5l awd. The internal water pump has failed, leaking green coolant onto the ground and threatening catastrophic engine failure. Ford designed this vehicle with an internal water pump that dumps coolant into the engine oil when it fails, hiding the defect from consumers until the powertrain is destroyed. Furthermore, the all-wheel drive power transfer unit (ptu) is overheating due to a design that labels the fluid 'lifetime' and prevents standard servicing. I purchased this vehicle for $14,400 and have invested $4,000 in maintenance, and I am seeking state consumer protection advocacy regarding Ford's deceptive engineering practices. ".

The vehicle experiences a noticeable shaking, shuddering, or vibration during acceleration. The condition is most noticeable when applying throttle and attempting to accelerate from lower speeds. The vibration diminishes or disappears once the vehicle reaches higher speeds. The issue occurs while driving under load and may be accompanied by slight fluctuations in engine rpm. The condition can affect vehicle drivability and driver confidence when accelerating into traffic or merging onto roadways. Known issues with the transmission and torque converter exists with the Edge line of cars from Ford.

Vehicle: 2017 Ford Edge titanium, 2. 0l ecoboost, awd mileage at incident: ~90,000 (mountain 2 lane canyon road steep cliffs and very little pull off space) description of problem: while driving uphill on a 2-lane mountain road, my vehicle displayed “engine coolant over temperature” (and related engine heat) warnings. The temperature gauge rose rapidly, engine power was severely limited (could not exceed ~40 mph even with full throttle), and pink coolant fluid was visibly boiling and gushing from the reservoir/overflow tank. I immediately pulled over safely. After cooling for 2–3 hours, the vehicle restarted and completed the climb with lighter driving, but the incident was dangerous due to reduced power on a winding mountain road with oncoming traffic. A check engine light with code p04db (crankcase ventilation system disconnected) is also present. Coolant pump, relays, fuses, and oil was checked and showed no milky contamination or issues at the time. Some white exhaust and smell was present at the time. This matches the well-known coolant intrusion defect in 2015–2018 Ford 2. 0l ecoboost engines (see TSB 19-2346), where coolant leaks internally into cylinders, causing overheating, misfires, and potential sudden engine failure. Mechanics initially found no issue on a cold check, which is common with this intermittent problem. Safety risk: sudden power loss, overheating, and “engine coolant over temperature” warnings on mountain roads or highways create a serious hazard of stranding, loss of control, or accident. This defect has affected thousands of similar Ford vehicles and should be investigated for a safety recall. I request NHTSA open or expand an investigation into this issue for the 2017 Ford Edge and similar models.

Full transmission failure, resulting in a full transmission replacement required. The problem has been confirmed by more than one independent service center. The check engline light came on and off for about week before the official diagnosis. From what I've found this is a common issue that many many owners have also had and suggested filling an official complaint here so that Ford is held responsible.

While driving under 35mph vehicle starts to chatter or shudder with a mileage of 52968. Also, while trying to accelerate the vehicle seemed to jump out gear. This could cause a possible accident from following vehicles. The vehicle is set to go to the dealership on 6/10/2026. While there are no visible warning lights illuminated, I believe this to be a safety concern for those driving the vehicle themselves and to the traffic around them.
This is my wife’s car, I have already had to replace the evap hoses on this car twice due to faulty motor craft purge valves. I also replaced the charcoal canister before the second time I replaced the evap hoses so somewhere in the system there is a faulty part. Now at 80,000 miles my wife’s car is experiencing what many others are calling “shuddering”. How am I supposed to get anywhere in life when I just paid this car off and now I need a new transmission after I have done all services as specified by manufacturer.
Failed torque converter, diagnosed and confirmed by local certified Ford dealer in portage, wisconsin. Vehicle can potentially leave is stranded with additional repair costs if not addressed.
Gears stopped engaging while driving. After diagnostic, the shop asked me to replace the transmission. The repair shop would have my old transmission after I get the car repaired. I won't have it in my possession. As I was driving on m39 on my way to work, car was making creaking whining noise when changing gears and suddenly, it stopped changing gears in the middle of a fast moving, narrow highway. I had to pull over to inspect the issue. Didn't see any warning lights at the time. Drive engaged again, which allowed me to take the car to work but once there, reverse stopped engaging completely and there was a significant delay for drive to engage. This is when the warning lights and messages came on. Brighton Ford dealership in brighton mi has confirmed that there are metal shavings in the transmission and reverse gear no longer engages. I have been asked to replace the transmission my car only gets serviced at brighton Ford. I was not told about any transmission issues. All the inspections that they performed during routine services did not result in any concerns. I did not notice any transmission issues in my vehicle prior to that morning. All the issues I described above happened for the first time that morning. This issue occurred without any warning or symptoms.
At low speeds 20-40 car shifts with a shudder. TSB 21-2389 was issued by Ford which describes problem I am experiencing. Took car to Ford and paid them to complete procedure per TSB. This did not correct problem and after reviewing other Ford owners it appears or I expect my torque converter and/or transmission has gone bad.
Ford has issues a technical service bulletin for a transmission shudder on the 8 spd automatic transmission. They know there is an issue for this transmission, now they want me to pay $8,000 dollars to have it fixed.
Went in and out of gear as I was driving down the road I was almost hit several times do to this. The transmission did go out at 60,000 miles Ford would not cover cost.
My vehicle is a 2020 Ford Edge with only 41,000 miles and the transmission is failing. Currently I have had the torque converter replaced; however, the issues are not completely resolved. I’m taking the vehicle back to the repair shop today.
Known Ford Edge issue, coolant intrusion, that occurs due to bad design of the engine block and related cooling issue. Engine nearly locked up while driving without warning or notice on highway, bad stuttering.
Car wouldn't shift into another gear without jerking/popping. It stutters at low speed and we told it's the transmission. I've done research and several people have had same issue.
My 2021 Ford Edge has experienced ongoing transmission issues for an extended period including delayed engagement into reverse, flashing gear indicator lights before reverse engagement, harsh/jumpy shifting during acceleration and deceleration, and intermittent shuddering. The vehicle previously required a torque converter replacement performed by a Ford dealership, however the symptoms continued after the repair. Today, while driving on the highway, the vehicle experienced repeated loss of power and hesitation while attempting to accelerate and maintain speed. During one highway merge, the vehicle failed to respond normally while accelerating and I was nearly struck by a semi-truck because I could not safely match traffic speed. Shortly afterward, while exiting the highway, the vehicle suddenly jolted violently and began making loud grinding noises accompanied by severe shuddering. The transmission/drivetrain appeared to fail completely, making the vehicle unsafe to continue operating. I stopped driving immediately and had the vehicle towed to the same Ford dealership that previously replaced the torque converter. I am submitting this complaint because the transmission failure created a serious safety hazard involving loss of propulsion at highway speeds, unsafe merging conditions, and risk of collision.

My transmission shuddered and became inoperable. We were traveling on interstate 25 just north of denver, CO when this happened, and we had to get out and push the vehicle to the side and have the vehicle towed. The safety of my family were put at risk due to this issue. As of writing this, the vehicle has yet to be seen by the dealer. There were no warning lamps on the vehicle prior to this issue occurring.
Ford states torque converter issue causing shutter when shifting, similar to other vehicles of this year, make, model but ours is not under a recall. Significant shuttering when in low gears and low speeds.
Blown head gasket, coolant leak into engine tsb222229.
On Wednesday may 13th the car started acting a little jerky whence putting car in reverse like normal. There was a thunk sound. But it still shifted. We then drove the car about 10 miles. Then later in the day attempted to drive home. It’s was over-roving while driving. Acting erratic. We pulled into a tire place to see if something was stuck underneath. The check engine light was on and there was an error message saying broken parking brake? they said to have it towed to a transmission specilist. To our horror. They are saying it needs a new transmission! a 4 yr old car? this is not normal. It worked fine until now. It would not move out of second or third gear. It nearly crashed.
Repeated torque converter failure and repairs. Has been repaired ant dealership under warranty multiple times and keeps failing. 2 months after last repair the torque converter failed again causing damage to the transmission and engine stoppage on the highway.
Bought a used 2019 Ford Edge, and transmission had issues within 2weeks of minimal operation!! transmission slippage, does not go into gear or has a long pause going into gear (even right from park). Very hard shifts in lower gears upon upshift and downshift. Also, gets worse the longer you drive it. It jerks, bucks, lurches, snaps your neck forward or backward, or does not go at all!! after this happens for a few minutes, it wouldn't even go into reverse!! that's just trying to drive it. As you might imagine, it's quite difficult to concentrate on road signs, hazards, pedestrians, and other cars whilst you're trying to drive this thing!! how could Ford possibly even think this is a safe vehicle!!.
There has been an ongoing issue! changed the sparks plugs, coils everything. The car will shake. It will be fine then the acceleration was slow, pressed the gas again then the check engine light will come on and blink. There has been many issues with this car. My engine is blown!.
Torque converter and transmission failed just outside of the powetrain mileage limit. The compenents were replaced in January 2026 and have failed again as of may 2026. Ford is of no assistance to the customer for the failure.
Car shutters and jerks. Transmission has completely shut done.
Car was repeatedly hesitating and shuddering during normal stop/go driving. Took it to the dealer and it was diagnosed with a "torque converter" issue (estimated cost of repairs is $4100). After researching this more, this looks to be a known issue with Ford 6-speed automatic transmissions. The hesitating and shuddering is a safety issue since the car is not responding properly to the drivers actions.
Transmission broke way too early.
I bought my car in 2024 and while it was through a private party I have had transmission issues since the day I bought it. It surges very frequently and has since the day I bought it. Today I noticed it has now started surging at idle without. It does it in park and when I put it in drive it surges forward on its own without me having to push in the gas. This is a huge safety issue not only for myself but for others. If I had continued to drive it, it could have jolted forward more forcefully in traffic and hit another car or even a person crossing the road. Being broke down on the side of the road is not something I want to have to do which I understand happens but I feel like not only have I heard terrible things about this year of Edges but I’ve experienced it with owning one. I had two mechanics tell me I obviously had a transmission issues since from the start but I haven’t been able to get it fixed yet. I never had a warning or lights in my car come on prior to this issue arising today. I’m getting it looked it later today. I had a few different salesmen tell me at Ford dealerships that the 2020 Edges were poorly made and they’ve had complaint after complaint about this very car.
While I was driving my car stopped accelerating on busy [xxx] . It was myself my son his girlfriend who is pregnant and her [xxx] son no indication there was a problem just heard a some kind of noise and it loses speed when try to accelerate it wouldn’t we where able to turn in to a gas station. I then cut the car off and when I tried to restart it the car wouldn’t start a week prior to this a wench did pop up on my dashboard when I looked in the manual it said that I need to take car to get looked at, at earliest convenience but a week. I have only had these vehicle seen December 2023 I paid cash for the vehicle and had warranty that was up to late last year the noise I heard sound like the same noise that when I purchased the vehicle maybe about 3 weeks later they had to fix something with the transmission maybe whatever wrong with it had something to do with that I know if we where on the highway we could have died I have had many cars that had mechanical problems but not none of them ever lost acceleration while driving my car will not start after I cut it off. Unknown what is going on with it just gave the details that happened on [xxx]. Before the malfunction the car started and drove fine until that noise and the car lost acceleration no messages appeared on the dashboard that day. The vehicle experienced engine failure due to coolant intrusion into the engine cylinders. The issue presented with engine misfire, including diagnostic trouble code p0302, rough running, and coolant entering the combustion chamber. The condition was confirmed by a dealership, which determined that the engine has internal damage and requires full engine replacement. There were no external coolant leaks observed. This failure occurred at approximately 88,000 miles and was not consistent with normal wear and tear. The issue developed without significant prior warning other than engine misfire and rough operation. This condition may create a safety risk, as engine misfire and internal damage can lead to loss of power, reduced vehicle performance, or potential engine stall while driving. Technical service bulletins have been issued for similar vehicles equipped with the same engine, including TSB 19-2172, TSB 19-2208, and TSB 22-2229, which describe coolant intrusion into engine cylinders and require engine replacement. This suggests the issue is not isolated and may affect other vehicles with the same engine design.
The ecoboost 2. 0 engine allowed coolant to intrude into the block. The engine misfires, runs rough, and had the potential to allow large amount of coolant into the cylinder resulting in complete engine stoppage. The safety of the driver and those around the driver are at risk when the engine shuts off. The engine has been inspected by an independent service center. Yes, the engine light illuminated and a p0301 fault code was produced.
Basically these cars are known to have major transmission problems that cause transmission failure, and my car is now experiencing the symptoms leading to that failure. I've seen a lot of people complaining about it, and though I guess it is my turn to get in on the complaints. Wasnt sure where else to do something like this.
On April 15, 2026, I brought my 2018 Ford Edge sel to an authorized Ford dealership with a loud rattling noise at startup and an illuminated check engine light. Ford motor company had previously sent me two written notices (September 2022 and June 2023) identifying a known cracked flexplate defect on my vehicle under customer satisfaction program 22n12, describing these exact symptoms. The defect was never repaired at any of my 16 service visits. Additionally, on September 2, 2025 — just 8 days after safety recall 25s87 for the rear brake flexible hose was issued — the dealership presented that recall repair to me as a $532 optional paid service without disclosing it was a free safety recall I was entitled to by federal law. Safety recall 25s89 for the rear-view camera also remains unperformed. The vehicle is currently undriveable.
My 2017 Ford Edge se has been diagnosed with having a coolant intrusion into cylinders. I was not made aware of this defect neither by the dealer I purchased or by Ford. It seems like I might have to replace the engine which an inconvience given that I have own the car for less than 3 weeks.
