On July 9, 2019 I was exiting the expressway and my vehicle began stalling at which time the odometer went down from 50 down to 0 immediately causing me to pull over to the side. Thank god I was already in the processing of exiting. No warning lights on the dashboard at all. I turned the car off, and then turned it back on. I took my car to firestone who was unable to perform a diagnostic at the time, and suggested that I bring it back. This is very dangerous and of great concern. This vehicle has only 42,460 miles or so on it, and I don't feel that I should be encountering this problem. I have had it since 2010 and at the time purchased at 18,000 miles or so. I drive my vehicle locally only. I have read that this a problem with Ford Escapes, and I believe that this issue should be listed as a recall. Please help!.
Vehicle stalls/shuts off randomly while in motion driving. This has happened several times while on side streets and on the highway. Recently happened twice within 30 minutes. Extremely dangerous.
Tl the contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. While driving 25 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and referred the contact to NHTSA. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 135,000.
Tl the contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. While driving 65 mph, an alarm sounded and the steering wheel seized. The contact pulled the vehicle over to a parking lot to attempt to restart the ignition, but the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the failure occurred multiple times. The vehicle was towed to asheville Ford Lincoln (611 brevard rd, asheville, nc 28806) where the power steering module was replaced. The manufacturer was also contacted and stated that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 117,500.
This happens in all conditions. Engine will lose power and start stuttering like it is missing. Exhaust will stink and darken enough so that it is visible. Accelerator will not work as normal. Vehicle will eventually stall as service light comes on. Fuel pump replaced twice in 2 days. Mechanics find no codes stored. Throttle body replaced under Ford customer service program. It reoccurred the next day. This needs to be recalled and fixed. The vehicle will slow and stall suddenly and is a safety issue.
My 2009 Ford Escape is stalling when I come to a stop. It is happening regularly and becoming a considerable safety issue.

Just driving normally and car stalls out--supposedly a failed throttle body.
Vehicle stalled and went into "limp-home" mode after accelerating from a stopped condition. ("limp-home" mode is a mode programmed by Ford engineers to only allow the vehicle to move forward under limited power, generally only 1-2 mph. ) I later found out that this was due to a faulty electronic throttle body. The vehicle then stalled an additional two times about two weeks apart from the first incident. I was able to use my own obd ii code scanner to detect the error code p2111. I found out that this component was determined to be faulty and Ford motor corporation issued an extended warranty coverage for this component. However, Ford will only replace this part if they are able to document the error code themselves on their code scanner. The problem lies in the design of this vehicle in that it won't store this particular code. When the vehicle stalls, the only course of action is to turn off the ignition and turn it back on in hopes of resetting the trhottle body. This works but it cancels the error code. The driver is forced to employ this technique to continue their travel or faced with the option of waiting for Ford to come and scan for the code themselves. If this happens after normal work hours, this of course is not an option. The fact that this error code erases itself in an attempt to get the vehicle moving again is a catch 22 situation and one that Ford should correct. I was forced to purchase my own replacement throttle body since Ford would not replace it.
After beginning acceleration from a stop light, my vehicle began to sputter and stalled out even though it was moving. I had to put it in park, turn the ignition off, and then turn it on in the middle of traffic. The gas tank was 3/4 full and the battery is only a year old.
On July 31st, my car was at a stop light, a minute after I pressed on the gas pedal, my car stalled (a light wrench on the dashboard appeared) -it would move maybe 1 mph but I was unable to accelerate on the gas pedal. After a moment, the vehicle was shaking . . . I turned off the vehicle and turned it back on, everything was fine, the light wrench disappeared. After 45 minutes later, on the road, the same thing happened again and I had to move to the shoulder to prevent any accidents from happening. Made an appointment with carmax less than a week later (because that is where I purchased the car, had it for a year). I was advised to come back if the same incident occurred because nothing happened since July 31st and they didn't want me to waste my money if they did not see anything. Since that appointment, the same incident happened numerous times during the week of August 3rd-9th. On Aug 16th, the wrench light appeared along with the engine light, went to my local mechanic and he mentioned that the throttle body needed to be replaced. It was confirmed today (Aug. 18th) when I went to an unscheduled appointment at carmax (even on my way there, the lights came back on) that the throttle body needed to be replaced.
The contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. After restarting the engine the failure recurred. The contact indicated that during the incident the maintenance service sensor light had illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 91,320.
Slowing down to turn right on adjacent street, the Ford Escape stalled and power loss ensued shortly thereafter.
Vehicle loses power when accelerating from a stop. Additionally, while traveling at a steady speed (usually between 30-45 mph) the vehicle power flucuates between surging and losing power. The vehicle has stalled when coming to a stop becuase of this flucuation. Also, the transmission shifts irregularly. The rpms rev excessively high, then the transmission jerks the vehicle when shifting. This happens the most between first, second, and third gear. The dealership stated there is a malfunction in the variable timing of the engine. They want to open the engine to try and find the problem without knowing what they are looking for. This issue started when the vehicle was purchased with 44,000 miles. They dealership did not have any appointments available until the vehicle exceeded 60,000 miles due to conflict of schedule and long commute times. Then they refused to honor the warranty. The vehicle has been to the dealerahip several times in the last couple years with no resolution to the transmission problems. I have almost been in several accidents from the vehicle stalling or losing power when accelerating.
I have a 2009 Ford Escape. This has happened many, many times, I do not even remember the first date of incident anymore (about 2 years ago) - the most recent was 1-27-2014. As I am at a red light or stop sign and attempt to accelerate, my engine stutters and chokes, occasionally gives a tiny little "pop" sound, sometimes stalling right in a traffic lane. When I restart it, there is no immediate problem. This is random, and does not happen every day. I have reported it to my dealer a couple of times in the past, but they could not find any failure codes, so they did not repair anything. I am taking it in again next week for this same problem - the service manager said it sounds like a throttle body issue, and will check it out once again to see if there are any failure codes showing this time. This is a very serious and dangerous condition !!.
I was stopped waiting at a red light at the top of a very steep hill. The light changed to green and I let my foot off the brake and went to push the gas and my Ford Escape lost all power and stalled. The battery light and oil light came on as it stalled and I started rolling backwards down the steep hill. I had no ability to steer the car and I also didn't have any brakes, I tried to slam the brakes as we were accelerating more quickly downhill but I had no control. In a matter of seconds my SUV veered off the road and hit a brake wall and at that impact my entire vehicle flies over onto the drivers side and stopped. The side airbags deployed and I was unable to open any doors. A passing car stopped and helped my son and I out of the back hatch.
While driving on Monday 11/18/13 my wife was stopping then went to accelerate and the vehicle stalled. Upon turning it off it restarted just fine. This happen 3 more times from then to Tuesday evening. I drove it to work Wednesday 11/20/13 and while accelerating on to hwy 94 the vehicle stalled. It did hesitate upon restarting but started and ran. Wednesday evening on our way home doing approx 30mph the vehicle stalled and again hesitated to start but did and ran ok. Thursday morning 11/21/13 while on my way to work I was at cruising speed doing approx 60mph on hwy 94 the vehicle stalled. It hesitated to restart again but started after leaving the vehicle off for a few seconds.
On Thursday 9/19, my wife was leaving work in our 2009 Ford Escape when after a few minutes it lost all throttle response and stalled on the road. After shutting off the car and restarting, she was able to drive it again for a few miles before the same thing happened. Luckily we were close to a local Ford dealer and were able to guide it there after another couple of stalling incidents. It turns out that the electronic throttle body was stuck open (code p2111) and needed to be replaced at a cost of over $500. The service advisor mentioned that this is a very common problem with the Escapes and that many of the original parts have failed but the newer parts are much more reliable. I found a petition online which alerted me to the fact that this is a widespread problem. . Read more...
2009 Ford Escape 40k miles. Driving down the road in normal driving conditions the vehicle started shaking slightly the idle started fluctuating and the tachometer started rapidly spiking up and down as well as a loss of acceleration. The vehicle also is stalling. Shutting the engine off and restarting vehicle temporarily fixes the problem. It would appear it is the same throttle body issue everyone else is having. Brought the vehicle in for service the dealer said it was not covered under warranty or my extended warranty that I purchased.
Two times today, while I was driving, my 2009 Ford Escape stalled while I was driving. The first time I was in the middle of an intersection around noon on a six lane road, and the second time luckily I was in my neighborhood. This is ridiculously unsafe, and Ford has taken no responsibility.
Driving down the highway at 60mph when car slowed down to 10-15mph. Had to place my emergency lights on in order not to get hit by passing vehicles and move to the emergency lane. I had to turn off the car in order for the accelerator to work again. After the first incident the vehicle kept on stalling. Took the vehicle to the dealer and it turns out its the throttle body thats malfuctioning. The warranty I purchased does not cover this type of part, I dont even have a year with this vehicle. In doing my research I find out that there has been an investigation on this vehicle on foresaid problem around the time I purchased the vehicle. The investigation is still opened. Investigation number pe13-003. The Ford dealership is charging me close to $700 in order to get this part fixed. They did not provide this information to me I had to look it up my self. They also did not provide me with a renter car I had to purchase one on my own. Its just unfair.
Vehicle stalled while driving down highway at 60mph. Happened again a week later- three times in same trip. Had to pull off side of road, put in park and turn off engine and restart each time. Trouble code p2111 indicated defective throttle body. Internet search showed this issue is under investigation. Ordered new part from dealership and dealer informed me it is on backorder for an undetermined amount of time due to high volume of replacements. In the meantime I cannot drive my vehicle.
Vct solenoids and cam sensors are faulty. The vehicle stalls randomly, engine lags and exibits poor fuel mpg. The problem occured just out of warranty and upon research; I have discovered this issue is very vast with 2009-2011 Ford Escapes, Mercury mariners, 2010-2011 Ford fusion and Mercury milan vehicles equipped with the 3. 0l engine and built on or before 3-1-2011. My 2009 Ford Escape and many others vehicles should be recalled at no cost out of warranty.
While entering a main highway from an exit, during acceleration the vehicle began "spluttering" and stalled. Car was turned off and restarted successfully. Again, leaving a parking lot onto a main highway pulling out of median begain "spluttering" and stalled. Car was turned off and restarted successfully. Again, stopped at a red light, when light turned green and began accelerating, car stalled in the middle of the intersection. Car was restarted and took to local dealer for inspection. Found to need a new throttle body. Upon research, found that this has been a frequent complaint. This has the potential to result in fatalities.
The contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact mentioned that the failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be replicated. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 39,000 and the current mileage was 39,500.
As I pulled out of my driveway my car appeared to stall. A wrench warning light came on and the car had very little power. It felt as if I was in neutral. I was able to pull it in front of my house and called a Ford dealership who had it towed. The problem is the throttle body but the part is on back order. I was told that there are 8,000 requests for the part but it is currently not being produced so the wait could be months or longer. I was told that I would have to pick up my car and drive it as is, as a replacement car was not available. I asked if it was possible to get the part threw a different company and was advised that the part cannot be found anywhere but I may be able to get a used one from a wrecked car. When I picked up my car and drove it home it stalled twice. I did as I was advised by Ford, I turned off the car, waited a few minutes and then restarted the car. This worked both times but is not a very safe way to drive. Fortunately I had someone following me and we both had our hazards on as the cars behind us were not happy when I had to stop in the middle of the road.
A week after I bought a 2009 Ford Escape from a used dealership, I began having problems with the SUV. First the battery died, leaving me, my boyfriend and his 3 year old nephew stranded in malibu until 10pm. The next day, we replaced the battery at an auto zone. As we started to drive home, my car surges and stalls. I turn the car off and on again and continue to drive but in about 20 feet, the car surges to a stop again and the "wrench light" turned on indicating a throttle control/powertrain problem. I have my car towed to the nearest body shop and the next day they tell me they cant fix my car and that I needed to get it towed to a Ford dealer. I contact the privately owned dealership where I bought my car (which is 40 mins away from my home) and they tell me they will get someone to tow my vehicle to them. A couple days later they tell me its a throttle body issue and that I needed to get it replaced. After they gave me a quote on how much repairs would cost, I told them I couldnt afford it so they tried cleaning the throttle body. After they cleaned it, they said my car was operable again but I would need to replace the throttle body as soon as I could. Since then I have driven my car almost 300 miles with no problems but I am still weary that my car will stall on me again so I will definitely have the part replaced once I have the money to do so. For a week while my car was in the shop(s) I did a lot of researching on my make and model SUV and I have read many complaints of people with a similar issue. What I dont understand is why the government hasnt issued a recall yet. Anyway, I'm just thankful I wasnt on the freeway or a busy street when my Escape decided to crap out on me. I could have been in a way worse of a situation.
Driving in town and it just had nothing. . . Pushed on accelerator and it would not do anything. Car did not stall out, sounded like it was going to but didn't. Still had all power just would not move when giving it gas. ***took to mechanic error number shows bad throttle body part***.
The contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer, who performed a diagnostic test but could not generate any failure codes. The vehicle was not repaired and the contact was not aware of the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 84,902.
P2111 error per computer - throttle actuator stuck open. Vehicle will not accelerate and engine shakes violently, feels like it wants to stall, but does not. Needs to be shut off and restarted to accelerate again. Problem has now happened 6 times in the last 2 days.
Wife was coming home form work; she was in the parking, suddenly the power train light came on and the car surged then had no power, pressing gas peddle did nothing, she thought the car stalled and could not restart it. After a few minutes of waiting she started it back up and the throttle responded, so she continued to pick up our kids. Once she was on the road traveling approximately 40 mph the exact same thing happened again. Her father was following her, and after a few minutes of waiting, they where able to restart and continue the drive. Her father drove the car the rest of the distance and, the problem happened again. Fortunately in all 3 situations they where able to pull over and off the road. Car has been in the shop since Thursday of last week awaiting for a new electronic throttle body which apparently is on major back order. Attempted to contact our Ford dealer but was greeted with less then friendly customer service from the service center. Car is out of warranty, and repair is going to be over $325 (quoted) if our repair shop can get the part. My wife and myself are very concerned about this as the problem happened once before several months ago, and happened on a very busy street, fortunately no one rear ended her. At that time we had Ford tow the car to their service center and inspect the car, they claimed there was no problems found and no service codes, and returned the car back to us as is.
On Friday, may 31, 2013 while I was on my way to work, my vehicle suddenly stopped accelerating. Luckily I was able to pull off into a bank and turn my car off and then back on again. I pulled out into the street and into the left lane to make a left turn. Half way through the intersection the vehicle stalled/stopped accelerating again. I just purchased this vehicle two weeks ago. I had to have it towed in to the shop where they determined that it was, surprise surprise the throttle body assembly. After reading through hundreds of complaints in just the last two weeks regarding this exact same issue, I am confused as to why there is no action being taken by the NHTSA? shouldn't there be a recall or something? I would like to know if my car is going to be safe to drive even after they replace this part. Something obviously needs to be done here. This issue not only affects the public safety, but my major investment seems to be turning into a disaster. Please address this issue immediately.
While operating the vehicle, it stalled on me without warning. Details are as follow. I came to a complete stop at a intersection. When the light went green and went to accelerate, the vehicle stalled and engine stopped. I had to put my vehicle in park and started it back up. This has occurred a total of four times so far. Only occurs about once a day. Three of them were at complete stops. The most recent stall was when slowing down I was below 5 mph, it stalled. I have taken the vehicle to a Ford dealership that services Ford's but could not find any issue or get it to stall. They drove about 60 miles doing various speeds and stops.
Driving on interstate I-95 at approximately 60 miles per hour, car lost power & stalled. After pulling off the road onto shoulder, turned ignition off & restarted, driving away normally. This occurence has repeated itself 3 or 4 times since may.
While driving the vehicle there is frequent surging and stalling with eventual result in a nonresponsive gas pedal. The check wrench service light and the engine light were illuminated and the vehicle would become responsive again if the engine was turned off then back on. After restarting the vehicle would soon begin to surge and stall again.
