1 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2021

While driving my vehicle to work, I lost my power steering. I had to make a turn and nearly struck another vehicle. I was doing only 20mph when this occurred. When I turned off my vehicle, then turned it back on and the power steering assist came back on. This has happened several times, including when traveling down a steep mountain pass at 65mph. There has been a few times when the vehicle was parked and went to start it, that the electrical power steering assist failed to come on. When my husband and I troubleshooted the loss of the power steering, we discovered that there was a recall on the vehicle due to loss of the electrical power steering assist. I was never notified of this recall. I inherited this vehicle from my mother and she and my step-father were never notified of this recall. The vehicle is currently parked in the garage until the vehicle can be towed to be repaired.

Lost power steering it come then goes now not working. Very hard to stee. Was just starring to drive.

3 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2020

A power steering assist failure lit up on my dash and I lost my power steering completely while I was turning into a parking lot and I almost hit another vehicle. After I shut off the vehicle and turned it back on it was working properly again. The same thing happened as I was on the highway and was very scary. I now have no power steering. I called Ford directly as I found out there was a recall on these vehicles for the year pertaining to my vehicle. They notified me that it was VIN specific and nothing could be done to help me since my VIN didn't fall under the ones affected. The right year and model but not the right VIN. Unacceptable considering it's the same issue. This was very upsetting considering it is a known issue and my safety and the safety of others around me is at stake. Doing some research I've noticed many more people like me with exact same issue and I'm not sure why Ford has done nothing to addressed this. Very upset with Ford. This vehicle was purchased for a new driver as well. Luckily it happened to me and not to her. Please address this safety concern before someone is seriously injured.

5 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2018

I was on my to work one morning entering the interstate on ramp and I lost power steering which almost caused me to have an accident. Making it extremely hard to steer the vehicle. Upon taking it to my local Ford dealership they told me my power steering torque control module was failing. This was a recall on Escapes from 2008 / 2011, but they said my particular VIN was not part of the recall??? upon further investigation myself I'm seeing where numerous Ford owners were having the same issue and like myself had to pay for this repair out of pocket. . . Not cheap I may add. It seems that someone will have to loose their life as a result of this defect before a recall is issued for (all) models in this time frame. . . What a horrible thing for Ford to put their consumers and their families in jepordy due to these defective parts. I would like to see full recall on all models between this time frame. Also vehicles to be fixed at Fords expense before someone looses a loved one. And reimburse those of us who have had it fixed at our expense. . . .

11 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2017

While driving on the interstate in July of 2017, the car suddenly lost power steering and lost speed. We were barely able to get off on the shoulder and cut the car off. When we started up the car again, everything was back to normal. However, this happened 2 or 3 times in the next couple of days. I called Ford motor CO. To report the problem, and they opened case #cas-12676591. I found a recall notice on this problem dated 09/03/2010, recall #10e043000 and another recall notice #14s05/NHTSA recall 14v-284 dated July 2014. However, Ford motor CO. Refused to repair the problem telling me it was a different manufacturer. My complaint is that the problem was identical to the recall regardless of the manufacturer. It cost us $1,868. 04 to repair the vehicle. Then it happened again in July of 2019, and cost us another $776. 60 to repair. I would have filed this complaint sooner but just found out how to register a complaint with the NHTSA.

12 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2017

Lost all power steering on interstate at high rate of speed.

13 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2016

The vehicle is losing power steering suddenly while in the midst of left hand turns. The car suddenly beeps, no warning light appears, and for 1-2 seconds the steering wheel feels completely locked up. Apparently this is due to a failing torque sensor, as the dealership reports that it is showing code b2278. The faulty torque sensor is a known safety issue with Ford Escapes, part of recall 14s05. But, rather than fix the problem (from what I can tell they freely acknowledge the original torque sensors were defective, and the new parts are of an improved, more durable, and safer design), Ford is only issuing a software update. Apparently I had this software update completed in 2014, and yet here I am with the same mechanical safety issue two years later. The software update, as far as my research reveals, does nothing to actually improve the safety of the vehicle, it just makes the car beep when it loses power steering. There are apparently 740,878 vehicles affected by this issue, which means nearly a million unsafe Ford Escapes and Mercury mariners are driving around the country with defective steering controls that could fail at any point mid-turn. Ford motor company needs to actually fix the problem (with part replacement) before too many people are injured or killed!.

14 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2016

The contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at 45 mph, the vehicle lost power steering. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was informed that the vehicle experienced the same failures as NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 112,000.

15 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2016

While driving on a public road at around 35mph my 2009 Ford Escape lost power steering. No warning lights came up. Was able to get into a parking lot. Tried several times turning vehicle on and off but steering only came on once then quit again. Was able to drive home in manual steering and was able to get it to summerville Ford dealership the next day. Was contacted by the dealer that the steering module in steering column had failed and needs to be replaced.

16 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2015

I own a 2009 Ford Escape. There was a very large recall on the steering column a couple years back, as the steering column would randomly freeze and you had very little control over your car. I had this issue. I almost got into a serious wreck during one of these freezing episodes when I was making a slow turn onto a road in atlanta, GA. The recall said to bring in the car to a local Ford dealership, and they would either do a re-set on the computer, or replace the steering column if deemed necessary. Originally, they re-set the computer. It happened one time after the computer reset, but I figured it was just a fluke. Almost a year later. . . The same issue started happening more frequently, again, and within 2 days, the electronic steering was completely gone. I lost all power steering ability. It went out completely. I brought it back in to gwinnett place Ford, and the "service" center said the recall had expired, and I would have to pay for a steering column out of pocket ($1,400). I had no choice but to pay out of pocket. . . Even though there was not an expiration date on the recall. Ford hq stated that the dealership could have replaced it free of charge (instead of the $1,400 they made me pay) and then just sent the recall and the bill to Ford hq for a refund. Gwinnett place Ford blamed it all back on Ford hq for an "expired" recall. Per the recall letter, they should have replaced my steering column free of charge. . . . They did not.

17 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2015

Power steering failure: following the first occurrence (14 Aug 2015) there were several other instances within the next couple of days whereby I lost power steering again and had to revert to manual steering. Nine months ago ( 10 Dec 2014) I had my car serviced at Ford's expense for their recall 14s05 that related to their "electrical power steering" defect which only amounted to a computer code reprogram. Then on August 26, 2015, after several more failures, I had my car serviced for the power steering failure in which case the steering column assembly and the housing had to be replaced at my expense which I didn't think was fair. Recall 14s05, to me, was a quick fix which did not address the root of the problem. An attempt to have Ford accept responsibility was not successful and I had to pay for the service which was quite expensive. I am hoping for a recall concerning this defect since I have read many more complaints (same problem) from other drivers with the same make and model and if so, qualify for reimbursement. Thank you for your time.

18 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2015

When I recieved the recall on the powersteering in the fall of 2014, I took it into a Ford dealer where they said it wasn't showing any "codes" but they re-pogrammed it this was 9/2014. In 2/2015 I started to notice occasssional jerking of the steering wheel while idoling. On 2/23/15 it because severe jerking and shaking when the vehicle was in park or idoling, I stopped by the Ford dealer on 2/25 and they told me it had nothing to do with the warranty. On 3/2/15 I lost all power steering and am now paying $1000 to have the entire power steering column replaced. I have seen numerous similar comments of this problem -- what is Ford going to do about it?!.

19 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2013

After backing out of a parking space without incident, then putting vehicle into drive, the vehicle lost power steering. The wheel was extremely difficult to turn, almost to the point of feeling locked up. After pulling over and checking the engine, the vehicle was shut off, then turned back on in a moment and the wheel freed up and normal turning resumed. The vehicle was driven home, a few miles away, without further incident. This problem has been reported about the 2008 and 2009 Escape on the following website with each report having almost the exact same symptoms and "solution", of turning the vehicle off and then back on again. . 20 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2013

On 2/9/2013 I was driving on a city street at 25mph when I lost my power steering. Took car to dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong they said it corrected itself. I took the car and the same thing happened on 2/18/2013. I returned it to the dealer and they did a diagnostic tist and told me the the sensor in the steering control assembly was only operating intermittantly. They replaced the entire module and had to align the vehicle. This cost $1256. 22. I had to wait for the part as it was on national backorder. I checked with another garage in another town and was told that he had just got the same complaint on another 2009 Ford Escape. He said that the national backorder indicated this was a prevalent problem and he felt there should be a recall as this is a serious safety issue, especially if someone were driving at highway speed. I am a pretty rugged guy and it took all I could do to keep the vehicle on the road. I keep my vehicle extremely well maintained and have the records to show all the service I have had done since it was bought. Also I am a professional driver.

21 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2011

While driving during both incidents the vehicle lost all power steering, stalled, and engine started missing. Tuned vehicle off then tried to restart and wouldn't click, continued missing. Rpms would rise without any movement. Turn vehicle off again to restart and it started correctly. While always driving the vehicle it will jolt while moving as if the transmission wasn't catching gears.
