2 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2020

My steering column started lock up about 2 months ago. It happening more often now. I have to turn the engine off and it reset itself. I was told by mechanic that is is the steering column and would have to fix by dealership because they have the special tools. I also searched y-tube and their was recall on the power steering sensor back in 2009 through 2011- I did not purchase this truck until 2016. This is dangerous and can cause an accident. I should not have to pay for repair, when it was not fixed accordingly during the recall. I see there has been several of these complaints over last 3 months. I used this car to travel out of town, but thank goodness it start happening in city street. This is a accident awaiting to happen.

3 Steering Column problem

4 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2020

My Escape's steering wheel began locking up when I would start the car. I was able to get it working after restarting it a couple times, and thought nothing of it. After awhile I took it to my mechanic, who told me the steering column would need to be replaced at some point but it was not urgent. He greased my wheel to make it less susceptible to locking up, which worked for a bit. The wheel started locking up again when I would start the car, and it got harder to fix it over time. It eventually started locking up while I drove, so I had it towed to a different mechanic near me. They told me to take it to a Ford dealership in lexington, ky, where it was not serviced. I was told again I need a new steering column because my power steering was out by both mechanics. I took it to yet another mechanic, where I was told the same thing. It still has not been fixed. My Escape has already been fixed under the previous steering recall, but this is happening to a lot of people that own Escapes recently, and it will result in a horrific accident if not fixed.

6 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2020

Power steering would go out intermittently without warning making steering control very difficult especially at lower speeds. It eventually went out completely while I was visiting florence, or from seattle, wa. The first time it happened it was on a city street at a low speed, making it very difficult to manuver especially turning and parking. After that it happened any where I drove. I took it to an independent garage for some other problems and mentioned this. They did research finding out about a recall that had been done on these vehicles for that issue. I myself then did some research finding out that it had been taken in for the recall in June of 2014. I then took it to the johnston motor CO. In florence, or. They did testing and found that it is reccomended that the pscm/steering column be replaced, estimated cost is $1690 and since Ford did the "sensor replacement" on the recal l it now my problem. I have read dozens of complaints from people who had the problem fixed through the recall and are now dealing with the same problem. I had to drive home to seattle from florence or with no power steering and pray that it didn't lock up completely. I am a 70 year old woman with back problems and arthritis, I was in pain to the point of not being able to stand up straight for 4 days after driving home, herding that monster down the road. Mileage at time of this is at 67,400.

7 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2020

My power steering went out on my car while driving at highway speeds and did not return once the car was shut off and restarted. Once I was able to return it to the dealership, a diagnostic test showed error codes of b2278 and b1342. Both codes were covered under original recall by Ford recall number 14s05. My car did have the recommended recall in 2014 which included the computer reset. This obviously was not sufficient to keep the power steering properly working and I have now been quoted $2200 to replace the entire steering column. I have read reports that this recall does not pose risks to safety as the power steering usually is off by the time the car starts so it is known when driving the car from the start. I can tell you that, that has not been our experience. The power steering as stopped while driving on the highway. This vehicle is our family car which regularly contains my 4 and 2 year old children. I am outraged by the number of similar complaints I have found online and yet we are told this recall was fixed. this recall needs to be further investigated as it absolutely poses potential harm.

8 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2020

While parked and trying to start the steering column would not unlock. After wiggling the column back and forth while turning the key the vehicle would start. As soon as you put the vehicle in drive the steering column would lock. After a while it would remain unlocked but it was too difficult to steer. No maintenance code or warning light indicators. Two days prior had driven approx. 470 miles from PA to nh with no issues. Initial research suggest an issue with a worn key switch. A less than $200. 00 fix. Had it towed to the local Ford dealer (dover nh). Diagnosis - adaptive collapsible steering column: power steering control module fault. (part of column). This is causing your steering concern. Item description: the adaptive collapsible steering column is an integral part of the steering and safety system. This is the part that transfers your turning of the steering wheel to the steering gear. The adaptive collapsible is a very important safety feature it will actually collapse during a frontal impact accident to keep the driver from being thrown directly into the steering wheel. Reason - if the adaptive collapsible steering column is broken then you will be unable operate your vehicle. Quote 3-4 days for parts - $1,995. 69 to repair. I am a female college student on my own and can't afford a $2,000. 00 repair or a car payment. I need a safe car to drive but unfortunately feel I am being taken advantage of.

9 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2020

I was exiting the freeway, turning left when all the sudden my steering wheel froze and I was unable to turn. I barely got myself to a safe place to park my car and was lucky to not cause an accident. I took it to a Ford dealership/ repair shop where they told me the steering shaft torque sensor needed to be replaced and that they had to fix the steering column too. There was a recall on 2008-20011 Ford Escapes for this exact issue!! however when I called Ford to set things right they told me they would not honor the recall. The previous owner got a software update though this was only 1 of 3 fixes that Ford should have done. Ford knows they have unsafe cars on the road and yet they tell the consumer to pay for their improper and faulty product. I don't see why I should have to pay for this when this has been an issue that was recalled; an issue that is exactly what happened to my car. Ford is choosing to not fix the problem and it is a major safety issue to myself, my family and those on the road. How can you get around not fixing your recall? how is that legal?.

16 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2019

On April 15, 2019, we purchased the used 2009 Ford Escape with less than 33,000 miles. Our teenage daughter drove it to work on April 17, 2019 with no noticeable issues, and when she was on her way home, she noticed something was wrong with the Escape. The steering wheel was getting more difficult for her to move as she was leaving work and coming home. We had purchased the Escape only 2 days prior, so we called the dealership which said there had been no known issues, of coarse. We took the Escape to a local Ford dealer who informed me the computer had been reset for this issue in 2014, when a recall was issued. He said as tight as the steering was, it was definitely unsafe to drive. They tried resetting it again with no improvements at all. Entire steering column had to be replaced. I was given an estimate then. This could have caused our daughter to have an accident from my understanding. We had to pay for the repair work, but was notified from the repair man that a recall had been issued in 2014 for this reason. I have spoken with several representatives today, and one informed me that this Escape was not included in the recall, even though it has had the same issues as others in the 2008-2011 range. I understand the VIN number was run and they said no issues with this vehicle, but I have the repair work to prove it did. So I would like this to be researched further if possible, with this happening, why was it not included in the recall? reimbursed? one representative informed me that this Escape was not manufactured in the location the others were on the recall list so the recall did not include this particular vehicle, yet it had the exact same issue?? this makes no sense to me. Thank you.

17 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2019

Tl- the contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. The contact stated that the steering wheel seized in either direction with no warning. The vehicle was unsafe to drive as it had to be turned off and restarted to reset the computer due to the eps failure. The contact was uncertain if the eps warning indicator may flash in the event of the failure with the steering wheel. The apple Ford Lincoln apple valley, 6961, 7200 150th st w, apple valley, mn 55124, (952) 204-9657 indicated that the vehicle would need to be scheduled for an appointment, the steering column would need to be removed for further testing and diagnosis which had not been authorized as of yet. An independent facility mechanic was to test and diagnose the eps failure. The manufacturer excluded the VIN from NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) however the vehicle exhibited the same failure as the recall campaign, was notified of the failure and provided no assistance. The approximate failure mileage was not available. Dyd.

18 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2019

The power steering went out. The wheel had been shuddering for a few weeks and gradually getting worse. While driving down the highway the power steering suddenly went out. I had to get the entire power steering column and parts replaced. My mechanic said that Ford recalled all power steering in cars made from 2008-2011, but for some reason my car did not have a recall even though it was made during those years.

19 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2019

I stopped to parallel park on a busy main street in downtown clovis. As I was backing and turning into a a parking space between two parked vehicles the power steering quit working without any warning. I was not able to turn tight enough to park into the space. All I could do was to pull out and slowly drive half a block to a large half empty parking lot where I had allot more room to maneuver. I was able to park there and we had to walk back to the restaurant to eat. When we returned to our vehicle and after I started it, I found the power steering was working again. I drove to the closest Ford dealership that was also where we had purchased our Escape from. I went inside to talk with a service writer. I told him about the recall 14s05 and that was the problem I was having. I informed him that the steering column had been replaced before in 2012 due to a steering problem. We never received a recall from Ford over the issue in 2014. He checked our VIN number and said they couldn't do anything for us under the recall. He said I could try to contact Ford motor company and see if they were able to do anything for us.

21 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2019

The steering column is bad and needs replacing and the steering assist relay module and wheel position sensor, this is identical to the models produced at the kansas city plant. My son was driving and the electric steering assist went totally out and required extreme force to turn the vehicle safely. This could have had life threatening potential had he not maintained control.

22 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2018

I was driving on a highway and made a left turn, while steering turning back to the right it felt as though it wanted to lock but eventually broke and went to normal. This has happened 4 different times since vehicle purchased. Took it to my local Ford dealership in fredericksburg, va, they told me after testing, I needed a steering column epas at the tune of $1400. They said you could not just replace the epas part on my particular vehicle and it was not one of the ones recalled earlier. After looking online and checking with another dealer, I have learned that the epas part can be replaced but apparently Ford will not let their service techs just replace that part. This is not right, I have paid a lot for this vehicle, new, and the replacement of that steering is more than I receive a month from disability. Thankfully I have not been in a situation of an accident. What can we as consumers do to demand that Ford take ownership and help out their loyal customers? I am loosing more and more faith in Ford (3 out of my 4) service visits showed that the service tech put a check mark that the power steering fluid was ok?????? another problem, in Feb. 2018 service visit, they said my tread was in the yellow. Back again for service in Aug. 2018, showed tread in green??? this is why I went back for this check up on all things at not charge after speaking to the service manager. If I had not taken it back for a revisit, I probably would not have found out about the steering! I will say my last visit was the best I have had to date, thanks to the service tech. Still I am not sure I would every purchase another Ford!.

25 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2018

A few days ago while driving on local roads at approx 30 mph, the power steering cut out and the battery light lit. I pulled over re-started car, drove another 2 miles and same happened while going around a bend in road causing me to partially go into oncoming lane. This happened 3 more times while bringing car to repair shop and now told I need a complete steering column due to all computerized steering controls being located in the column. Is Ford doing anything to rectify this obvious common and dangerous problem ? I am the original owner of this vehicle.

26 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2018

The power steering intermently goes out it either works when I start the car or it doesn't. I was told I have to replace the entire steering column since that is where all of the electrical parts are located. Ford says this is not under there recall and it will be $1350 to replace. This seems to be an issue from what I am seeing Ford wants to take no responsibility for this.

29 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2018

My daughter would initially have to turn the car on and off anywhere from 8-30 times to try to get the power steering to kick in but eventually she was driving and it just stopped working for good. Though power steering shows as , "fixed" after a software update on 2014,my daughter was nearly in a fatal accident when the power steering went suddenly. I saw that there were two possible error codes-one was a software code which that software update would fix but if you have the issue with two different codes then the whole steering column has toeplaced. We have both codes and yet Ford denied it because of the plant at which it was made. It did say though that some cars made at our plant were included in the second recall. I am certain it slipped through the cracks, as have many others I'm sure. I want Ford to stand by its product and I don't want some other family to find out when their daughter does die in an accident. Please review all cars that should be included.

30 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2018

The car steering column started to lock up while it was parked when you start the car the steering wheel wouldn't turn after awhile it would you were able to turn on the car in the steering wheel were function after a while the car would do it while driving the car was brought over to the dealership steering column was replaced a few months later same issues steering wheel column or steering wheel would hit when turned brought back to the dealership it was replaced the second time now all electronics relating to the brakes are having issues like brake switch starts to malfunction or brakes get locked up. The car would have troubles either parked or while driving. I bought the car from a dealership so I'm not sure if this car had prior issues to that nothing was disclosed when I purchased it. I am aware of other Ford Escape 2009 models have the same issue and have been recalled.

32 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2018

My 2009 Ford Escape xl became virtualy impossible to turn a corner or turn the wheel at all to park my car on may 2,2018. I almost threwh my back out just trying to get home after a 15 minute drive. I had it towed to a mechanic who told me the steering modulator needed to be replaced and this included the whole steering column. This mechanic is aware of the 2008-2011 recall involving the Ford Escape manufactured in kansas USA. My Escape was manufactured there but I was told the vehicles being recalled for the steering issue were from a different pant number. My mechanic disagrees and feels my Ford Escape has the same exact faulty issue and it is a hazard to drive.

33 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. While driving 45 mph, the steering column seized without warning. Brighton Ford (8240 grand river Ave, brighton, mi) was contacted and diagnosed that the torque sensor failed. The dealer and manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in any open recalls. 34 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2018

Power steering went out unexpectedly, have had 14s05 recall and experiencing same issue many have had with this vehicle model. Steering column is defective. Hundreds of others are dealing with this as well in 2009 Ford Escape. Power steering assist fault.

35 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2017

My vehicle was subject to safety recall 14s05. I am the 2nd owner, and according to Ford the recall repair was completed in 2014(reprogramming the pscm. However, the actual torques sensor in the steering column was not replaced. This morning it went out on me on my way to work while exiting i96 wb in wixom, mi. We had 7 inches of snow fall last night, so road conditions were snowy and icy. When the electronic steering assist went out, the vehicle only had manual steering, which is very difficult to use. As a result, I temporarily lost control of the vehicle, nearly striking another motorist. I then corrected the steering wheel back in the other direction, and ran off the left shoulder of the road into a snow drift. I was not injured, and there was no damage sustained by my vehicle. I was able to get the vehicle out of the snow drift under it's own power, and continued on to work. I am very lucky to be writing this complaint today, I very nearly could have suffered serious injury or death, or injured or killed another motorist. I researched this problem on the internet to try to diagnose, only to find that this is a prominent problem with these vehicles, and that the safety recall had been issued. But as I soon learned, like many, many others, after the initial recall repairs are completed, Ford will no longer do any other remedies for this problem. I find this to be alarming, and unacceptable. As of right now, the condition still exists, and I am trying to get estimates on the repairs. I would like this issue to be investigated thoroughly, and I believe that there is more to this problem than simply reprogramming the pscm. I believe that the steering torque sensor and/or steering column is more likely the problem, and that Ford should fix or replace as necessary.
