While my daughter was driving our 2009 Escape limited on the expressway at 70 mph, the steering assist failed without warning causing her to almost crash. After getting the car pulled over to the side of the road she had to restart it and the steering assist began working again. This has happened now on multiple occasions and is dangerous to both the individuals in the vehicle and anyone else on the road. Ford needs to alert drivers of these vehicles of this issue before they hurt or kill someone. When I enter her VIN number it shows no recall. If this was a safety issue and an recall in 2011 why is it not an issue today. I have a daughter currently stranded at her work because her steering wheel will not turn as I type this report.

Steering has completely frozen during operation making controlling the vehicle virtually impossible. I'm absolutely petrified to drive my vehicle. These problems are very irresponsible on Fords behalf. On a straight road traveling about 25-30 mph. Next I had a left turn coming and my steering wheel failed to turn, and almost ran into another vehicle head on. To say I'm petrified of my vehicle at this point is a gross understatement.

Immediate steering failure of the electronic steering with no notice or warning. Steering was working fine in the morning but upon starting the car in the afternoon, there was no power steering. There is a recall for this issue but it does not appear my car was included in the recall. The recall should be expanded as this is a known and widespread issue with this vehicle.
Intermittent loss of electronic power steering similar to those reports listed in those vehicles covered under the recall. All failures happen while parked and in motion. I believe that Ford needs to dig a bit deeper and issue an amendment to this recall to fix these vehicles before the lives of others are endangered and I do not want to risk the lives of him, myself or others on the road due to the intermittent acts of the steering failures within my vehicle.

I received the recall notice in the mail (14s05) effective July 25, 2014. I brought the vehicle to a Ford dealer to have the recall satisfied in August in which I believe consisted of a control module software update. Until this service we had had no problems with the power steering. Shortly after the service my daughter started having the problem with the power steering completely going out. Because she is a college student, I located the closest Ford dealer to her location which is don reid Ford in maitland, FL. I took it to them specifically to address the recall failure. The service manager at don reid said that the recall had already been closed out and any additional work would be at regular charge. Then he said that the problem is with the steering column and it would need to be replaced. I told him that I would like to pick up the vehicle and either reschedule the repair or even have my daughter drive it to the original dealer for the work and to address the fact that the software patch did not resolve the problem. His comment was that "this is a very dangerous matter and would not advise anyone drive the vehicle". I decided it was in our best interest to have the steering column replaced and to address the recall issue after. The repair was $1,000. Ford refuses to reimburse me for the expenses. Now sometimes when my daughter tries to start the car by turning the key nothing happens. She removes the key, reinserts it and it will work. I have called and spoken to several Ford customer service reps who basically agree with my assessment that the steering column replacement be included in the remedy for the steering failure. They also said that the service manager would have to discuss this with the regional service manager and submit the repair as the recall.
Power assist to steering failed. Resulted in very difficult to turn/steer vehicle. Very fortunate this happened at low speed.
While slowing down to make a turn, luckily with no traffic present, the steering wheel locked up and became almost impossible to maneuver. As I was making my turn into my work's parking lot the steering failed, mid turn, and I was unfortunate enough to slam into a snow bank that was piled up on the edge of the corner. This was hardly a crash, but a crash none the less. Little cosmetic or body damage was incurred but the fact that my vehicle, which touts strong safety ratings, was in an instant unsafe for the road due to a design flaw in the eps system makes this reviewing hundreds of posts about this same issue, nationwide, it seems that I am not alone in my frustrations that Ford should do something to make this right. Steering is undeniably an essential function of operating a vehicle and being in possession of such a vehicle, that I still am making payments on while struggling through school makes the neglect from Ford highly offensive. It seems that a nationwide back order for a part that is so essential to a vehicle's operation would be appropriate for some sort of recall / compensation for the part needed. Something needs to be done.
