37 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2017

Loss of powering steering in vehicle going 55 mph on a busy highway. No engine lights or safety signals appeared on the dash when this occurred, there was absolutely no warning. Luckily, I was not in a serious accident when the loss of power steering occured and I was able to take the vehicle to the dealership to have it looked at. At this point they said the recall should have fixed everything regarding the electrical powering steering issue, but now that the recall has been closed there is nothing they can do and I am now responsible to have the power steering column replaced. When the vehicle was taken in the recall initially, it took them 2 minutes to complete the check list checking for dtcs and to reprogram the pscm and instrument cluster. The customer information sheet posted with the safety recall bulletin was never give to me even though all dealership service management should have provided a copy to those who only had reprogramming completed on their vehicle.

I went back to dearlership took the print out of safety recall they did something on their computer found they had done a computer reprograming in Aug 2014 and sorry the recall for us was closed. I did not receive a letter but the service dept in Aug 2014 when having a regular oil change they performed this reprogramming for this recall which after now leaves me unable to get help. They recently explained since they did their duty at that time and found nothing than that closed the safety recall for our faulty power steering now gone. I asked them what if you had not done that reprograming in Aug 2014 and now my power steering gone would I now be able to get it fixed under the recall he said yes! this seems to me like a scam to all their customers, they knew exactly the problem and knew I may have a loss later on and covered their a ss ES . They have quoted me $1300 to replace steering column, rack, tierods. The owner of the dealership said to c.

49 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2015

I received a recall notice number 14s05 involving the power steering, I took the car into brian motors in everett washington on December 16, 2015. Recall was taken care. I had no problem prior taking it into the dealer. Approximately 2 weeks later I experienced problems with the steering. I returned the vehicle to brian motors in everett washington and was told that the power steering column assembly needed to be replaced. This was one of the repair options listed in the recall. I was then informed that Ford had closed the recall and the price of the repair would be approximately 1500$ . After calling Ford costumer service in dearborn and being told again that I would be responsible for the repair because the recall had been closed. I have since found out that many owners of this year and model Escape have experienced identical problems and received the same response from Ford. I believe that there is a defect in the power steering column on 2009 Ford Escapes and it is Fords responsibility to correct the problem. I believe that this could pose a risk of accident to anyone driving this car and that Ford needs to address this immediately.

50 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2015

Before 6/18/15 randomly while driving any speed my vehicle had a wrench warning light illuminate and loses complete power along with steering, the car shuts off completely you have to turn ignition off and restart. It would run fine for several days and then randomly happen again or possibly multiple times in a day. 6/17/15 - I brought vehicle to Ford dealership to fix recall (13n03) ¿ tech replaced throttle body for this correction. At the same time they also performed a recall (14s05) ¿ tech reprogrammed pscm for correction. 11/24/15 ¿ was driving my vehicle when the wrench light came on again and the whole steering column froze up. Had to stop and turn vehicle off in traffic and back on. No correction to problem the vehicle was immediately brought back to Ford dealership. 11/25/15 ¿ I was told the torque sensor needs replaced. I advised them the recall was not properly fixed the first time. I was informed that part is not under warranty according to Ford service cite. 11/27/15 ¿ the torque sensor as indicated on their diagnostic testing and replacement of this part failed to fix the problem with the steering being locked up. Service tech contacted Ford hotline to try and figure out why the problem was not addressed with replacement of the part that indicated as the issue. 11/30/15 ¿ Ford service technicians had to work with Ford hotline to troubleshoot vehicle. They said now my whole steering column would need replacement. Ford said I needed to pay for both parts (which did not fix any problem) and labor. I refuse to pay for any parts. My vehicle has been at dealership with this issue so long my tags are now dead. My car needs a safety inspection and service manager said they could perform the safety inspection and just electronically put the ¿passed¿ information into the system. Vehicle is not safe and is still at dealership to date.

51 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2015

Several times upon starting my 2009 Escape, the power steering would not work. It was like trying to steer the car when it was not started. After shutting the vehicle off and re-starting several times, the power steering would then work properly. A Ford dealer said that the only fix for this problem was to replace the steering column. Even though my vehicle had less than 36,000 miles on the odometer, Ford would not cover the cost. I decided to have the problem repaired for fear that the power steering would quit while driving. I had to pay $1137. 07 out of pocket to fix the problem. I am the original owner of the Escape.

53 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

The power steering stopped working while driving on a city street. I was turning into a shopping mall and there was suddenly no way I could steer this car. It is dangerous to try driving the vehicle. You cannot turn it without brute force and it is impossible to steer at slow speeds. It is definitely a safety issue. The problem is a torque sensor which when it goes out, the entire steering column must be replaced to the tune of $1500. Ford should take responsibility for this issue before too many owners end up in crashes.

54 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2015

In February of 2015 I took my vehicle into al piemonte's arlington heights Ford in arlington heights, illinois because our power steering had been going out intermittently while driving. They said it just needed a computer update relating to recall 14s05. Last weekend the power steering went out completely and never came back on. There was no warning, no indicator light or sound as referenced in recall 14s05. I reluctantly drove it into the closest dealership, golf mill Ford in niles, illinois. To be proactive, I called Ford customer care at 800-392-3673 and explained what was going on. They created a "case for me" and said to wait to hear from the service manager at the dealership. He called me last evening and said that Ford won't honor the recall because it had been "cleared" and they wouldn't cover any portion of the repair which will be around $1200 (to replace the steering column assembly). I've had to get a rental vehicle as well. I called Ford customer care last night and asked how they made that decision. The agent said it was the warranty department but they only will speak with the dealership. I asked for a supervisor or manager and they said no was was available. I asked if I could get a call back from one and the agent said his system went down so there was nowhere to save the information. Today I called Ford customer care again and explained in detail specifically that if I hadn’t brought it in back in February they would be honoring this recall. Also the update done in February did not even work. There was no indicator light or sound when power steering went out.

55 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2015

Tl- the contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. The contact received the repair for NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) but the failure recurred. The manufacturers recall remedy did not repair the condition. The contact later experienced the vent controls failing to work after the dealer replaced a cylinder and the ignition switch. The vehicle was also violently shaking causing the steering wheel to be extremely unstable while driving. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who diagnosed that the torque sensor was faulty and needed to be replaced as well as the steering column. The manufacturer was notified and refused to provide a good will option for the contact. The approximate failure mileage was 136,400. Dyd.

56 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2015

In July of 2014 I had the recall performed on my Escape for the power steering. A few months later the power steering went out again and I returned it to the dealership that had performed the recall work and was told that if it went out again I would need to have the power steering sensor replaced. A couple of days later the power steering went out again. In April of 2015 I took it back to the dealership to have the sensor replaced and after replacing the sensor he discovered it didn't fix the problem. He spent a couple of days working with Ford to figure out what was wrong as all the computers were saying it was the sensor. Ford finally said it was the electronic steering column that needed replaced which was over double the price. After talking with the service manager about concerns I had with replacing that at such a high cost I learned that Ford knew about issues with the original steering column components and they have changed them in the replacement parts. Ford refused to work with the service manager on fixing it for me or working with the cost even though everything pointed too the sensor. Ford is at serious fault knowing there are problems with the steering column and just tried to put a band aid on it with the recall that they did issue.

57 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2015

Power steering went completely out. While driving. Car had been recall in July 2014, when a update was done for power steering assist unit. That did not correct issue Ford dealership in lugoff SC that did service offered no warranty, they inspected it and stated steering parts need to be replaced at a price of $2400. 00 I just purchased vehicle less than 30 days when this occurred. From the research I did I am not the only one that has gotten ripped by these faulty vehicles. Something needs to be done and a recall needs to be on the steering column and other related parts that cause this issue.

62 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2014

I received the recall notice in the mail (14s05) effective July 25, 2014. I brought the vehicle into garber to have the recall satisfied in August in which I believe consisted of a control module software update. Until this service we had had no problems with the power steering. Shortly after the service my daughter started having the problem with the power steering completely going out. Because she is a college student at the university of central florida, I located the closest Ford dealer to her location which is don reid Ford in maitland, FL. I took it to them specifically to address the recall failure. The service manager at don reid said that the recall had already been closed out and any additional work would be at regular charge. Then he said that the problem is with the steering column and it would need to be replaced. I told him that I would like to pick up the vehicle and either reschedule the repair or even have my daughter drive it to garber for the work and to address the fact that the software patch did not resolve the problem. His comment was that "this is a very dangerous matter and would not advise anyone drive the vehicle". I decided it was in our best interest to have the steering column replaced and to address the recall issue after. That is where we are today. Ford is refusing to reimburse me for the steering column replacement. I have called and written to Ford several times. They either make excuses or have me contact someone else who makes excuses. I want to be refunded for the steering column replacement.

63 Steering Column problem

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. The contact stated that when making a left or right turn, the steering wheel became difficult to turn without warning. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 105,000. Djr.

64 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2014

Upon starting the vehicle the steering wheel remained locked, as if the power steering went out. I had to stop and restart the vehicle 5-6 times before the power steering would return to normal. I have seen many complaints regarding this issue when I researched it. This is a dangerous defect, because of the difficulty in steering the vehicle when the power steering is out. I also realize that there is no power steering fluid because this is an electrical syatem. I just purchased this vehicle from a Ford dealership, and do not have the money (upwards of $1500 to replace the steering column. Other vehicles that have this problem, kias, toyotas, are reporting this defect on their vehicle as a recall and paying for replacements for their customers. I am very disappointed in Ford for not handling this issue and will never buy another Ford again!.

65 Steering Column problem

66 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2014

Power steering/steering column replacement. 250 miles into my trip I was at a stop light and when the light turned green I accelerated and without warning I had no power steering. I managed to pull into a parking lot to get off the busy street. Hoping for a simple answer I checked the "four wheel drive, electric power steering module (epas) , park aid module" fuse and it was fine. It was late evening - the dealership was closed, no rental cars available. The police ended up taking me, my dogs, my luggage, etc. To a motel. In the morning arranged for a tow truck and rental car. Dealership mechanic was a jerk because I had pulled the fuse and reset the error code. Told him when you're in a strange area with no help to be found, you're desperate and will try whatever you can. Was not in the mood to put up with his attitude. Got on the road in the rental car and hours later received a call from the dealership telling me the steering column needs to be replaced for $1,300+ and that the extended warranty I had purchased had expired 1/21/2014. I have seen so many posts regarding this matter. When is Ford going to realize this is not a random problem? I have had so many problems with this vehicle. In addition to the current issue I have also had to have the transmission replaced (at about 31k); front wheel bearings replaced; the left, front speaker that was replaced has gone bad again. I am not a bad driver (have never had a ticket or been in an accident where I was behind the wheel), I am careful with my routine maintenance. Next time it breaks down I'll be tempted to walk away from the thing and not look back.

67 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2014

While I was driving my vehicle steering would lock. I was not able to turn my vehicle steering column unless I turned my vehicle off and on again, at which time it would work for approximately 200 feet then once again the steering column would lock. According to the Ford dealer, the whole steering column needed to be replaced and now I find that there is a recall on a sensor in the steering column, and not the replacement of the steering column. Replacement of the steering column aren't covered under the recall Ford has issued. There are other complaints out there with the same issue.

68 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2013

I was driving down the freeway from albuquerque to las cruces when my steering became almost impossible to turn the wheel. I quickly pulled off the freeway and called my boyfriend to ask him what to do. He said restart your car see if that resets it. It did work. Then later I parked and the steering wheel just started shaking vigorously. This has happened six more times since then ranging from speeds of 20 to 75 miles and hour. I have read online about this problem and it seems to me to be a very unsafe thing to have happen while driving at high speeds on the freeway. Very scary when all of a sudden you can't steer or its very hard to steer. I also don't understand why Ford would replace the whole steering column versus just the sensor. If I would have been in a big turn and it had stopped working it could have been a horrible wreck. If there is anyway possible that this could be a recall to replace the sensor or column it would make everyone driving feel that much more safer on the roads. Thank you for help with this matter.

69 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2013

Safety issue: my 2009 Ford Escape's steering wheel began to shudder/vibrate at idle. In addition, when the vehicle is started, the steering wheel cannot be moved left or right. It locks up. I have to shut the vehicle off and re-start it in order to get the steering wheel to move. Today, I was driving down the road at approximately 45 mph and the steering wheel completely locked up. I could hardly control the vehicle, but was fortunate enough to get it to the side of the road. This could have been disastrous. I had to shut the vehicle off again and turn it back on in order to proceed. This vehicle only has 57,000 miles on it. It has had the regularly scheduled maintenance on it since I purchased it new in Jan 2009. I am extremely concerned about this being a safety issue. I have researched online and have read other complaints on this issue, and would like NHTSA to investigate this based on safety issues. The situation that I experienced today could have resulted in serious injury or fatalities. The consumer had to pay for a new steering column, at 56,000 miles. Updated 02/24/14.

70 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2013

Our 2009 Ford Escape has lost it's power steering, while I was driving, twice this week. It was nearly impossible to control the vehicle, yet it was still running. It is electric power steering so there is nothing that can be done to prevent it (I initially thought my power steering fluid must be low). The first time it happened, on Friday, I had it towed to my mechanic. Nothing showed up on the dashboard at the time and nothing showed up on his scanners. When the truck was started again the steering worked fine. We decided it must be a fluke. We only have 85,505 miles on the vehicle. It just happened to me again, while I was driving. My husband was supposed to drive to our friend's house north of boston (we are south of boston). He cancelled. It terrifies me to think of what might have happened to him at high speed on those highways. We got on the internet and discovered this is a very common problem in 2008 & 2009 Ford Escapes. It turns out the entire steering column needs to be replaced to fix the problem, average cost is $1500. Ford is aware of this dangerous life safety problem yet has not issued a recall. Do people really need to die first?.
