1 Rear Window Wiper Washer problem of the 2012 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

Vehicle was purchased on 2/29/2012. I parked in the driveway after returning from work the following day (3/1/2012). I was sitting in the vehicle with the ignition off, while talking on the phone. The car sat in the driveway for about 5 minutes while off and stationary. The temperature outside was around 35-40 degrees fahrenheit. Suddenly, the rear window spontaneously shattered, and glass was distributed both inside and outside the vehicle. The police were called, to investigate the possibility of someone throwing or shooting a projectile at the window. A police report was filed, and no evidence of human involvement was found. There were no projectiles or items in the vicinity that could have caused the window to break. I was in the vehicle when it happened, and the noise was very loud. After shattering, the window supports were in the extended position outside the vehicle. The rear wiper assembly remained in it's original position. All of the glass except small amounts around the hinges and wiper assembly were shattered. I suspect that a defect is to blame, causing the window to spontaneously break in this manner.

2 Rear Window Wiper Washer problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/24/2011

Rear wiper fails to operate at constant speed, often preventing driver from seeing what is behind, which creates a safety concern. Owner's manual (page 66) states that rear wiper has a normal speed and an intermittent speed. However, dealership and Ford customer care claim that two intermittent settings (one with longer delay) is the design intent. This is absurd. No other vehicle with a rear wiper which I have driven (rent frequently) does not have a constant speed operation.

3 Rear Window Wiper Washer problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/12/2011

I drove 7 miles to work. It was a little foggy/dewey out so I turned on my rear defrost. The temperature was in the low 60's, so cool, but not cold by any means. I parked my car and rolled the windows (all 4) down @ 3 inches. When I parked my car @ 8:00am it was fine. By 9:10am, I was informed that the back windshield of my car was "broken". When I went to check my car, the back windshield had completely blown out. There was barely any glass on the inside of the car as it had all blown out 3-4 feet into the parking lot. I did have the local police respond just in case and the officer shrugged and questioned/stated "freak accident". I've found numerous reports of this happening on these vehicles, yet no public awareness has been made. I am just glad that it didn't happen while I was driving like with some reports I've read. My insurance would cover a "recycled" rear windshield/wiper and I am terrified to use the rear defrost on the new one knowing that it came from the same year and make of vehicle for fear it will happen again.

4 Rear Window Wiper Washer problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/07/2011

2010 Ford Escape limited(hybrid) rear windshield glass exploded sometime during the day while I was working a 12 hour shift in the parking lot of my current job. Location being indianapolis, in, yesterday was in the 90 degree range of temperature. Walk out to my car about 1:30 a. M. This morning and saw glass all over the ground, looked up to my vehicle, and noticed the back window was still in one piece in the middle and glass cracked out all around the edges. No sign of an accident or damage to the exterior of my vehicle except little scratches from where the glass had busted out. Components holding the glass were hanging out of the latch including the windshield wiper component, hinges glass was attached to. , and glass latch you would use to open the compartment. Being that this happened on a Saturday night/Sunday morning, no replacements were done as the Ford dealership will not be open until Monday. Have a 5 year/100k warranty on the vehicle and plan on taking it in the first thing tomorrow morning. The trunk compartment had not been used all day or even the vehicle since about 11 am earlier Saturday morning. Had been sitting for close to 13 hours. Glass exploded out about 4-5 feet behind the vehicle. Very displeased.

5 Rear Window Wiper Washer problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/24/2011

I just leased a 2010 Ford Escape only 10 months old. The hatch back windo exploded 3 times. The last 2 times was in a matter of 2 months. The last time it exploded by daughter was by the glass and most of the pieces shattered on her. This is crazy. Know as I google I see this is an ongoing issue. I am going to Ford. They better do something about this. The glass company I went to to get it fixed said it will happen again. This car should be recalled!!!!!!!.

6 Rear Window Wiper Washer problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/18/2010

My daughter was going through a mcdonalds drive thru with our 2008 Escape when she heard what she thought was a explosion and glass appeared everywhere in the vehicle. It scared the heck out of her! I reviewed other complaints about this and Ford doesn't seem to think this is a problem. I am wondering what might have happened if our granddaughter was in her infant seat facing backwards as she does! I feel that regardless of what Ford thinks, this is a safety issued. As if that isn't enough, the cost of this simple piece of glass is in excess of $600. 00 ! all but $250 of that was covered by that, however to me that is $250. 00 too much to pay for what appears to be a manufacturer design problem! the repair company (safelite glass - national company) says just in the joliet IL office they see this problem almost daily!.

7 Rear Window Wiper Washer problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/15/2010

The rear hatch window on my 2005 Ford Escape exploded outwardly while parked in the lot where I work. Glass blew out in a radium of 15-20 feet and it was just luck that no vehicles were parked behind mine or that anyone was walking behind the vehicle. The window blew out with such force that it damaged the interior and the hatch itself and required that interior panels be replaced and the hatch repainted in addition to replacing the glass. The glass shop where I took the vehicle for repair noted that this was a common problems for 2004-2006 Escapes. Thankfully, my insurance carrier paid for all repair and replacement minus the deductible. However, the internet is full of similar reports and a tv station in my city did a report on a similar incident on an Escape parked in a garage about two weeks before my window blew. Obviously, there is a major problem that Ford refuses to recognize. It is amazing that no one has of yet been reported injured from flying glass.

8 Rear Window Wiper Washer problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/31/2010

The winshield washer failed to operate properly. The rear window waher was operating properly. The vehicle was being driven on an expressway in inclement weather. Therefore the front windshield visability was greatly inpaired. I researched the internet, and found reports of the washer fluid line becoming disconnected near the windshield washer pump. The on line reports said that this was a common problem, told where the fault was and that the right side inner fender had to be removed to fix the problem. I found the faulty connection, and added plastic wire wraps to secure four connections in the area from coming loose again.

9 Rear Window Wiper Washer problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/27/2009

The rear glass hatch imploded just after exiting an interstate highway. Most of the glass was confined to the cargo area, a little glass reached the second row of seats and only a few shards reach the driver front seat area. Conditions at the time we 32 degrees with snow and rain, requiring the use of the rear window heater to keep off icing and use of windshield fluid to permit viewing while in heavy traffic in the cincinnati ohio area. The only indication of a problem prior to the explosion was a low hissing sound coming from the rear just moments before it happened. Repairs the next day found no problems with wiper, wiper motor or shorts in the electrical harness to the window defroster elements of the glass. No injuries were caused to my 2 passengers by the flying glass. However should this have happened just 20 seconds earlier while on the interstate in heavy traffic, the shock to me, the driver, could have caused an accident, since the first impression I had was that the vehicle had been struck, then upon realizing that the window had blown out I thought we might have been shot at.

10 Rear Window Wiper Washer problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/10/2009

I was driving my 2005 Ford Escape on interstate 90-west, and upon reaching the city of brathnall city line I heard a loud explosion and noticed that my rear window had exploded. When I was able to pull off the freeway, I notified the 911 police emergency , and requested assistance. A police arrived within 10 minutes and assisted me. I have just notice that there has been several other persons who had complained of the same problem with their Ford Escape, when will the NHTSA do something about this problem? are you waiting for the loss of lives to occur first before you will do something?.

11 Rear Window Wiper Washer problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/30/2009

Rear window "explodes" for no apparent reason. Vehicle was parked, no one inside - rear defroster had been on prior to shutting the vehicle off.

12 Rear Window Wiper Washer problem of the 2004 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/17/2009

Went to pull car out of garage and found that the rear window had exploded. Found parts of the window more than 20 feet from car. The car has not been driven for a couple of days. Nothing had failed or hit the window to have caused this.

13 Rear Window Wiper Washer problem of the 2004 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/14/2009

Reporting an exploding back window issue on a 2004 Ford Escape. Once in 2005 and now again in 2009. The only thing both times had in common was the running of the rear window defroster. Ford has no recalls or bulletins and will not pay for second repair as it is out of warranty. I am concerned for the safety of people driving these vehicles and passengers they may have. There is no reason for this to happen once but twice is not acceptable. I was given nothing for my trouble and they are not researching this defect. Oh wait, I got a free oil change. The dealership I was dealing with was awesome. . . But the correspondence from Ford motor leaves a lot to be desired! someone needs to check into this issue.
