While traveling down a open highway, the sunroof glass on the above vehicle (2008 Ford Escape) exploded for no apparent reason. The glass buckled upward when it broke. The outside temp was @60 degrees and cloudy. There were no other vehicles anywhere near. The above miles are appx. . I will be taking pictures for record.
Wife was driving vehicle, when she heard a pop. When she got home she noticed the sunroof glass had exploded. She told me and I went out to see if I could find a rock or any other foreign object. Could not find anything. The sunroof glass just failed in an outward direction. Ford has denied warranty claim and denied our appeal. I have read several other reports of this same thing happening with their Ford Escapes. Driving along and hear a pop sound. Then later realize their sunroof has failed. This critical situation needs to be brought to attention of Ford motor CO. And have them stand behind their product, if said product is still under the manufacturers warranty.

Was driving my 2010 Ford Escape limited when I heard a very loud pop and the sunroof glass had completely shattered. The person in front of me was about 100 -150 meters ahead of me, mid-60 degree day, highway driving. Was able to close the inner slide before the glass starting falling down.
11/09/09 7:20 a. M. I proceeded to go out to my 2008 Ford Escape XLT to start it when I did I heard a strange noise above me , I thought it was birds or something, I proceeded to slowly open the cover on my sunroof about 1 inch and noticed it looked shattered. I got out of the vehicle it looked like it exploded. The glass was like a volcano erupted. I have never seen anything like it before. I called rub Ford in gardner IL they said it possible could of got hit by a rock, I stated the road was closed on each end due to road work on the spillway and no traffic was going by at the time due to the road was blocked off. I went to the nearest Ford dealer in el paso IL heller and they said it could possible a rock, or frozen ice. But the temperature outside was in the 50's and I found no rock. And I do have a rather long concrete driveway from the road. I asked for copies of the paperwork the dealership had for Ford but they refused to give it to me saying it was private. Ironically the dealership technician told me it would cost $660. 00 to replace the window when I have a 3 yr 30,000 bumper to bumper warranty if they get it from Ford it would take 2 wks but they could it from another source quicker for an additional $25 and get it in 1 day. So it made me feel like they knew it was a faulty glass. They did nothing to resolve this matter they told me to contact my insurance company. We have done a internet search and ironically there are a few people who have had their sunroofs shatter but to no avail Ford has done nothing to fix the matter. I was just lucky I wasn't driving at the time. Like the other consumers on the forum pages.

I was in my driveway after running errands and decided to wash pollen off car. Driver's side door was open, so I just "sprinkled" water on the car and when it hit the sunroof, I heard a pop. Looking at top of sunroof I saw nothing unusual. When I opened the inside roof, I saw the glass was all splintered. As I closed the driver's door, the glass all fell onto the inside roof. Guy at Ford told me I must've had a crack in the sunroof & when the water hit, it shattered. My windshield did have a crack in it, and that didn't shatter so that blows that theory! 70 degrees that day.

On or around April 15, 2005 my 2001 Ford Escape VIN 1fmyu03161kc18103 sunroof began to malfunction. That is, the roof did not move forward or backward. I took the vehicle to my local Ford dealer to determine the problem. The service advisor notified me that the rack Ford part number 5l8z78502c22aa would have to be replaced. I feel that with such little use (maybe a total of 3 hours over 4 years) this Ford part should not have gone belly up. In my opinion, under normal use, this part should not need to be replaced in such a short time with such little use.
While driving sun roof exploded. Consumer pulled over. No injuries reported. The vehicle was towed to the dealer.
