Ford had a 2015 recall for power steering problems, during which this vehicle was checked. What if this went out at highway speeds and had a baby in the car? reading online other people's experiences with power steering problems the car shouldn't be driven. Ford should be made to extend their recalls and give trade in credit to get these cars off the road. They are a danger to all. I had all the fuses checked and unhooked the battery. However, there was considerable shaking in the steering wheel with a rattling noise coming from the steering column. This was only the latest incident. Earlier in the morning when I started my car there wasn't power steering. I turned the car off and then on again at which time it worked. This has been going on for about a month happening maybe 1 or 2 times a week. The shaking and noise from the steering column is getting louder while idling.

20 Steering Noise problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/17/2014

Suddenly I began hearing a clicking noise in the dash of my 2008 Escape with 96,800 miles. Next I began hearing a raspy noise in the steering column. While in idle my steering wheel jerks to the left and right on it's own. Both the jerking and the noises come and go with out any prior warning. This seems to be a major issue in many of the 2008 Escapes, and someone is going to get seriously injured or killed. I contacted Ford and they acted like they new nothing of the issue. Until this point I have been pretty pleased with my vehicle, but the fact that Ford has not had a recall after so many incidents, makes me not want to buy a Ford ever again. My mechanic has suggested I replace the electronic steering column. The cost will be around $1300. 00 with parts and labor.

Purchased new Ford Escape 06/01/10, at approx 800 miles it developed a metal to metal clicking sound within steering column when manuvering in and out of parking lots and slow speed turns. Brought Escape to dealer on 06/21/10, dealer said they have to realign motor to frame. Noise returned and Escape was returned to dealer on 07/27/10. Dealer replaced steering shaft and coupling. Noise returned again, Escape returned to dealer on 08/30/10, this time they are replacing whole steering column. As of 09/13/10 dealer still has Escape.
