I purchased a 1999 expediton. And shortly after buying it notice a tapping noise that goes away after about 2-3 minutes of warm up. I believe ther is other problems causing this. My major complaint is with the constant oil leak on the righthand side head gasket. The is a constant leak of oil down ont the exhaust manifold and catalyst converter, causing a possible fire hazard. I have read of over 53 other compalints for the same problem and question why Ford has not recalled this problem. It all comes down to economics, I feel the are quick to fix small problems I. E. . . Trailer hitches and wiring problems, but when it comes to a known manf. Defect in these particular engines Ford is not willing to stand behind there work. Iwould like to see n. H. T. S. A force Ford to correct this problem. If people are spending over 25,000 for a vehicle they should have the piece and mind that their families will live long enough to pay off the vehicle. My point is that I am a u. S. Marine and my life is at danger whenever we go off to war and its a possiabilty that my life can be ended by a single bullet, and I am willing to make that sacarfice. But I never thought I would be ask to die in my vehicle on the open roads in the land of the free. The way I see it Ford is willing to save a few dollars by not accepting responsiabity of this known defect. But my wife, 5 year old daugter, 3 year old son, and 2 year old son should mean alot more than $1800- $5000 saved by them not fixing the problem. I would really like to see what can be done to remedy this situation. And if they still refuse to fix the problem lets just send all the iraqi's and terrorist a free 99 Ford expediton that should solve our war on terrorism. . . Not so respectfully submitted, gunnery sergeant united states marines.
Problems with headlights blowing out, replaced bulb, still no high beam. Lights completely went out one night. Had to have family member follow me home. Battery detached to get lights inside off. Lights originally went off when I plugged my cell phone in for charging; something that I have always done in my prior vehicles. Vehicle cutting off, shop states that it is due to problem with emission. Ac runs hot when vehicle keep turning off. Vehicle acceleration is bad. Vehicle even when running on interstate appear to be having difficulty maintaining speed, appears to be wanting to cut off. Vehicle cuts off in middle of traffic for no particular reason. Started putting premium gas, but gas smells are bad when I run vehicle in garage to warm up. Shop thinks that once charge ac may improve.

While driving, heard a noise under the truck as if vehicle ran over something. Took vehicle to dealership, mechanic stated it was sway bar link that broke off. Check engine light is illuminated; dealer found hego sensors were not responding; bank 1 and 2 hego sensors were replaced.
The oxygen senor shorted out causing the wiring harness to burn completly through. This then caused the wiring harness below the oxygen senor wiring to also burn through which then caused the computer to the engine to be damaged and in need of replacement. If would seem this is a safety hazard if a wiring harness can completely burn through itself. This could have caused a severe fire in the vehicle. Dealer and manufactuer state this is not a problem and an isolated incident.
We were informed by ritar Ford that the reason the engine" check light came on ,was caused by water dripping from the air conditioner line onto the oxygen sensor. We were also informed that t. S. B. # 00-1-7 would alleviate the problem by re-routing the line so the water would not drip on the oxygen sensor . However even though we purchased e. S. P. (extended warranty protection) this repair was not covered because we exceeded 36,000 miles. I feel as we were "ripped-off being asked to pay for a obvious engineering shortfall by Ford motor company . Aside from the engineering problem, a pontental enviromental problem is possible due to the failure of the oxygen sensor.
Charcoal cannister on fuel tank clogs w/ dirt from gravel road, causes engine light to come on. I paid to replaced it with a re-designed part & dealer still repeatedly has to clean new 1 out. He says this happens to 97s & 98s. This is a pressure relief valve. Now I'm told to buy another new one with no guarantee it won't clog. I'm driving with it clogged. Who knows if pressure will build in the tank. Complaints to Ford have been useless. I live in the country. Cannot avoid gravel road. This SUV is advertised to handle this kind of driving. Our Ford pickup and Jeep cherokee don't do this. I want Ford to come up a part that works.
