There is no warning - my Ford Expedition just goes into engine fail safe mode and shuts off - no ability to steer, drive etc. Was traveling on highway at highway speeds (55+ mph) when this happened. The engine fail safe had come on before but was a bit scary upon driving at a speed. The dealership states that the throttle body needs to be replaced. My vehicle only has 55000 miles on it - and from reading other forums I see that this is a problem with a lot of Ford Expeditions. It is in the shop now (at a cost of $700) being fixed, I am going to request to have the old parts saved so I can keep for future reference. I believe this is a major defect that needs to be fixed as it will cause a death one day soon - as the vehicle shuts off during driving.

When the key is taken out of my ignition, the blower motor to the heat and air conditioning goes to full blast. I then have to disconnect the battery in order not to drain the battery. This only happens when it is raining out. Apparently the windshield leaks to the gem box and shorts it out.

Number #4 coil pack, once air condition is turned on dripping water from lines into spark plug area, the #4 coil pack will through a code for a miss-fire. I have replaced the coil packs through out the entire engine recently again. I ran the air conditioning for about one hour and the next day I started the vehicle up and it had a rough idle. I drove approximately 6 miles when the check engine light came on. I hooked up my obd2 to see the problem found out the new #4 coil had misfired once again. I had the single coil pack replaced with 45,000 the first time then I replaced them all at 135,000. And now I had to replace the #4 coil pack again by itself at 143,000. It only throws a mis-fire once I have the air condition on.

The contact owns a 2000 Ford Expedition. The contact noticed smoke rising from under the hood of the vehicle. When he lifted the hood, flames were present. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was destroyed. Prior to the failure, the vehicle had been parked for two hours. The dealer referenced recall # 05v388000 (vehicle speed control), but the contact did not receive a recall notice. A police report was filed. The current and failure mileages were 83,000.
: the contact stated while traveling 65 mph on normal road conditions, a loud popping sound was heard. The contact pulled the vehicle to the side of the road and had it towed to a local dealer. Upon examination, it was determined that the spark plugs blew due to inadequate engine design of the threading. The vehicle was not included in a recall due to the VIN. The dealer replaced the spark plugs and threading. The contact encountered similar complaints about the engine and engine cooling:engine that related to the contact's issue.
The vehicle experienced a coolant leak.
The firewall heater hose connectors in the area of the #4 coil pack on many Expedition with the 5. 4l v-8 will leak hot coolant on the #4 cylinder coil pack. This will lead to the failure of this coil pack. Failure of this coil pack causes a severve engine miss and loss of performance. Failure on highway can make vehicle unsafe. Ford is aware of the problem but is not provding a permanent fix.

Constantly brought to dealership who continually says nothing is wrong with vehicle. No safety defect listed within summary.
When vehicle had 3,789 miles on it, coolant leaked onto plugs & coils. Had it repaired. On 8/30/99, coolant leaked onto plugs & coils. Had it repaired again. Wrote to zone division with copies to ceo and chairman of Ford requesting to be released from my lease. Only got form letters back. On 1/2/2000, same thing happened again. Left car at dealership, putting envelop with keys and note stating problem in their night service window. . Have had other problems with vehicle I. E. Rear wiper blade inoperative. Adamson Ford, where car was leased from kept vehicle from Thursday 8/30/99 until Monday 9/2/99. Dealership very rude and uncooperative, and failed to repair items listed on service order. I believe vehicle is a defective product sent from the factory to the dealership who in turn leased it to me.

Steering has play and dealer has tried to fix three times. Steering has feeling of no control. Cooling system needed one gallon of coolant five days after taking ownership on 3/26/99. Vehicle was a demo model and was still considered new even though it was a 1998 model.
The engine loses coolant with no visible signs of leak found, the steering pulls to right and is loose, feels like you can easily loose control. Drove other new vehicle and did not have this problem, similar to odi id# 702318.
The complete engine failure occured gradually. . The dealer never was able to diagnosis it until coolant in cylinders 1 and 4 caused the vehicle to not start. The control-trac is very disconcerting since the traction control system will not stay in 4 wheel drive when it has been selected to do so. I have turned this vehicle in for servicing for this problem on 8 occasions with no resolution. . . .
Vehicle smells of oil but none visualized on inspection of engine. Seems to be worse with colder temperatures. Oil gauge in vehicle runs higher end of normal engine temperature is normal.
