A warning light "engine fail safe" flashed and the engine stalled. I was fortunate there was a parking lot
I could force the vehicle into, as I was in morning rush hour traffic in houston TX, and was almost rear ended. Apparently this is a very common problem among the 2006 Ford Expedition, I have done some research on-line and viewed many complaints about this same thing. I checked with one auto shop, which says the throttle body needs to be replaced at a cost of $800. 00, the Ford dealer/service dept quoted 686. 85. They both told me they each have another 2006 Expedition in their shop at this time for the same repair, and have had several repairs for this same issue. I believe this is a very dangerous defect with an engine shutting down with only a half second notice. I am glad I was not on the freeway (in houston!) doing 60 mph. My vehicle has a little over 38,000 miles on it.

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. The contact was driving 20 mph the vehicle stalled with the illumination of the check engine fail safe light. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 168,000.
While traveling 60-65 mph, in the fast line of a four lane interstate, my 2005 Ford Expedition suffered engine failure. I was able to safely get my car off the interstate without harming myself or my children. The mechanic informed us a rocker pin had broken and caused damage to a piston resulting in the need for a new engine. I am reporting the incident to you because when we picked up our car at the service department, having had the engine replaced, we were told that there were two other Fords (1expedition and 1f150) that came in after ours with the same issue.

The vehicle enters engine fail safe mode. At this point, the vehicle will shut off and you will lose engine power and steering capabilities. This is particularly dangerous when driving 70 miles per hour on the highway. It will eventually kill someone if it has not already. Ford has dropped the ball on this one. The repair is a $600 - $800 throttle body assembly. Ford should be eating this cost.
I was preparing to make a left hand turn into a busy office complex, and the engine in my 2006 Ford Expedition cut off. The system generated code was 'engine failsafe mode". I turned on my hazards, put the car in park and waited a few minutes to restart. The engine car started, but the fact that it cut off, without warning is extremely alarming. I've contacted Ford corporate who said that there were no recalls, and that I needed to go to a service center. After researching the internet and this site, I am convinced that this issue should prompt a recall, but Ford's cost-benefit analysis indicates that it is waiting until there are enough fatalities to make the determination to fix what appears to be a $600-800 issue. Ford should be and can be held liable for gross negligence in their deliberate decision to disregard the engine failure complaints. I have been a loyal Ford customer for several decades. That is no longer the case.
2006 Ford Expedition on 2/2/11 while I was driving on freeway the vehicle goes into "engine fail safe mode. " not knowing what this meant I was going to proceed to exit up ahead which was an exit up a hill. When I stepped on the gas I realized the engine was off. I was able to move slightly to the left to stop on the shoulder at the bottom of the exit. This is very dangerous and Ford needs to make a recall before a life is lost!.
I own a 2002 Ford Expedition with a triton 5. 4l v* engine. While driving I heard a loud ticking type noise from the engine. I immediately pulled the vehicle over. My mechanic stated that a spark plug had been ejected from the block. He stated that this is a common problem with the Ford triton engines. I feel that Ford should make this right with the consumers that have had trouble with this. I have yet to find a mechanic that will do the repairs for a reasonable amount. The truck has been sitting in the driveway for 3 months, un-driveable. I have not been able to get the repairs done and fear driving it due to the risk of fire and engine failure.

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the engine fail safe mode warning light illuminated, causing the vehicle to stall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The current mileage was 46,000 and the approximate failure mileage was 39,000.
With no warning, my 2006 Ford Expedition will lose all power while driving. The light on the control panel comes on saying "engine fail safe mode. " after coasting to the side of the road, I restart the car and all is fine. I have taken it to two mechanics and they say there is nothing wrong with the car. It has happened twice so far.
My family (me, wife and two children) were on our way home from a restaurant. We normally take the highway but decided to take the side road home and thank god. Driving 45 mph the "engine fail safe mode" came on and it completely shut off. I pulled over to the side of the road and turned the engine off. After a few minutes, I restarted the vehicle and it started fine and no warning signs. This is the first time it occurred but I do not want this to happen again. The vehicle is inside the garage and I'm calling the dealership tomorrow to make an appointment. This is a family car and we are always on the highway. This is a fatal fail that needs to be corrected. This failure occurred at 61,408 miles. I checked the Ford website and there is no recall. However, there are numerous complaints on the internet for the same issue. I'm afraid for my wife and children while they are operating this vehicle.
The contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the engine fail safe mode activated without warning while the vehicle was being driven, causing the vehicle to stall. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer three times and they had not been able to duplicate the failure. The failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 77,000.
2005 Ford Expedition 5. 4 engine, misfiring 3&5 cylinder. Rough idle. Car has 127,000 miles and since we have had it I had issues with it idling in park and almost at times wanting to stall. Engine has on more than 3 occasions while driving 60-70 mph on the highway become un responsive while driving. Engine would run but no acceleration when the gas pedal was pushed; it was like the car was running in neutral. Indicator light came on showing "engine failure". Pulled off the road and restarted car and then it ran fine again. Ford svc dept. Could not replicate the situation when I took it to them, so it was never repaired. (clearly there is a faulty problem) currently car is in the shop replacing all 8 spark plugs, coils and boots. Mechanic indicated a lot of carbon buildup in throttle body. (seems to me possibly some other faulty component could be why I'm having to spend $800 to fully repair my car).
1. There were no events leading up to the failure. There is no warning that this is going to happen or is happening. Under normal driving conditions, my 2005 Ford Expedition simply lost all power and the words "engine fail safe mode" appeared. 2. This occurred twice (oct. 6, 2009 and Nov. 16, 2009). I was able to pull to the side of the road both times but during the second incident, I lost the power steering as well and struggled to pull over. The consequences of this "engine fail safe mode" is that the car stops working. You become a sitting duck wherever the car has decided to go into this mode. You are unable to accelerate -not fun when this happened on the freeway the first time-and if you do not lose your power steering, you can pull to the side of the road. 3. The electronic throttle body was replaced for approximately $700. Nowhere in the car manual does it let you know that this code could lead to this repair. I had a hard time figuring out what the code meant using the owner manual. The most frustrating part of this failure is that if this had occurred when I was traveling at 65 mph on the freeway, I probably would not be here to enter this complaint. I would like to prevent this from happening to someone else.
Ford Expedition 2001 triton v8. Two blown spark plug engine failures within the last 6 weeks. First was original equipment failure, #7 was fixed, thorough and careful replacement of all spark plugs. Just experienced a second and violent blowout during labor day holiday traffic.

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. While driving in a parking lot at about 15mph, the vehicle just shut off. A light on the instrument panel indicated that the vehicle was in " engine fail safe mode". The contact put her hazard lights on, put the vehicle in park and turned the engine off. She restarted the vehicle and it operated normally. The contact stated that this has happened about 6-7 times. She reported the failure to the manufacturer and they stated that they never heard of anything like this. The driver does not feel her vehicle is safe. The failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage is 52,691.

Engine shuts off while driving down the street. Engine fail-safe light is displayed. Was barely able to steer the vehicle to a safe area. Restarted engine, everything came back up again.
1/8/09 while driving at 65 mph on highway vehicle's "engine fail safe mode" alarm sounded & message flashed on panel. Vehicle immediately lost power. I was able to coast to shoulder of road. Turned off vehicle, restarted and was able to drive approximately 1 1/2 miles. I was in turn lane, started to turn left, alarm sounded, message flashed and all power was gone. I quickly turned vehicle off and back on to try and get out of path of oncoming tractor trailer. I was able to get just off roadway after 15 mins started vehicle, drove 4 miles failed again. It was towed to mechanic. After calls to Ford and further testing the electronic throttle body assembly was replaced. On 1/30/10, 35 miles from home, driving on highway at 55 mph when "engine fail safe mode" alarm sounded & message flashed on panel. Again I was able to safely pull to shoulder of road to avoid accident. I called Ford dealer located in that town, had vehicle again towed to shop and they replaced an additional part. I called Ford after 2nd event, I was told by Ford that they are aware of the problem, however since they don't have a solution to it they do not have a recall on this. On 4/20/11 while driving home from work on highway at 60 mph the "engine fail safe mode" alarm & message flashing on panel. I was in far right lane so again was able to coast to shoulder before steering locked from no power. If I had been in left lane I would not have been able to get off roadway. (on 4/19/11 I had vehicle inspected, in nys, no codes were on this vehicle). Towed to shop, after running tests and calls to Ford they have again replaced the electronic throttle body assembly as it had failed. Still no recall. This is extreme safety issue. I have avoided accidents 3 times, if I had been in left lanes I would not have been so lucky. This happens with no advance warning. Ford knows there is a problem.
My 2006 Ford Expedition suddenly shuts down for the third time now while driving on the road. The engine shuts down suddenly and gives out the engine fail safe mode message on the board. Dealer says nothing showing up on the diagnostics. How could that be. There's got to be a reason why that SUV suddenly shut its engine down. Accident will happen if this will not be resolved.
I own a 1999 Ford Expedition. Yesterday, my fiance and kids were on their way to school when the engine failed. Upon inspection, we found that the engine had ejected the #3 spark plug on the passenger side. This caused the coil pack to "shatter" as well as the plug cable attached to it. I've done extensive searching on the subject, and there have been incidents reported of fires caused by these plug ejections. Also, hundreds of consumers have been stuck with repair costs of several thousand dollars. This is a common problem and should be addressed as a recall. Lives are at risk.

Engine failure on my 2003 Ford Expedition having a 5. 4 liter triton v8 engine. Number 2 spark plug was blown out and the cost to repair is $3000. Ford has known of this issue for some time but will not accept blame. The number of threads to hold the spark plugs is too few.

I purchased my 1999 Ford Expedition used, with 50,140 miles on it. I also purchased an esp warranty plan. My engine always had a knock when cold. I thought that was "normal". On the week of April 12th, the engine knock became severe and the vehicle had been using more oil than usual. I brought it to johnson Ford for repair. My service advisor told me not to worry, I had the best warranty plan there is, and that this is a very common problem with the 5. 4 engines. He even told me that he spends much time calling in similiar claims. The diagnosis was "spun rod bearings". After two weeks, my claim was "denied", and I removed the vehicle from the dealership after a $6400. 00 estimate for a new motor. I brought the vehicle to a reputable independent, and had to purchase a used motor for my Ford. After much research, I have found that numerous people have had complaints about defects in the 5. 4 ltr engine. I find it very frustrating to have spent $1100. 00 on a rental car, $4300. 00 on repairs, and $335. 00 to johnson Ford to tell me that my engine failed. (I knew that when I brought it in!) in addition to that, I spent $2395. 00 on an esp warranty that was of no use to me. Johnson Ford is claiming that my engine failure was due to lack of maintenance. Mobile tech (the independent) has stated that my engine was sludge free, and that their opinion is that is was not lack of maintenance. I have written at least 20 letters to the dealership, the bbb, and different departments of Ford motor company since April 30th and am getting no answers or satisfaction. The motor remains at mobile tech as I have requested an examination, again, from Ford motor company. To date, I have been repeatedly denied my request.

Consumer was staying in below freezing weather conditions and part of engine failed. Engine skips/shakes, and runs hard. Vehicle is driveable. Ford says it's because vehicle has 4. 5 tectron engine, all Expeditions have this model.
