Ford Expedition owners have reported 207 problems related to engine (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Expedition based on all problems reported for the Expedition.
On 2 separate occasions (both around 40,000 miles), the car just shut itself off, without warning, while driving down the road at about 40 mph. Power steering and power braking both failed. I was just able to coast across several busy lanes of traffic to get to the side of the road. This could be extremely dangerous, particularly if I was on a freeway or interstate. The dealer's diagnosis was that the throttle had gotten stuck wide open, and that the car had to go into failsafe mode to prevent it from accelerating out of control. What if the failsafe mode fails? I've read numerous other complaints of the same thing happening on other 2006 Ford Expeditions. There is clearly a defective part here, and it is clearly a safety issue.

6 days after having sparkplug #5 blow out of the cylinder #4 blew out.
2002 Ford Expedition blew two (2) sparkplugs out in one week. Had #5 fixed at a Ford dealer, 6 days later #4 blew out.
Spark plug pooped out of my truck twice now. . . Lost power. . . . Fuel spurting out of the plug opening into the engine compartment. . . . Very costly repairs. It is happening all over the united states. . . . Probably worse issues then the current Toyota recall in progress now. . Read more...
One of the spark plugs blew out of the head while I was driving on the highway. There was no external damage, however internal damage to the engine is unknown. This could have started a fire under the right circumstances as raw fuel was being blown through the spark plug hole. This vehicle has the original spark plugs, so this is not a case of someone putting too much torque on replacement plugs. This is a serious issue and after reading the posts on the internet from other Ford owners that have had the same problem, I am convinced that Ford needs to do a recall.
Blown #1 spark plug that has occurred 3 times in a year helicoil will not hold.
The contact owns a 2004 Ford Expedition. While parked three sparks plugs/engine misfired. The failure caused $1700. 00 worth of damage. The vehicle was towed to the Ford dealer and all of the wires under the cylinder head were repaired. The failure mileage was 119,680.

We have a 2000 Ford Expedition that blew out a spark plug about 6 months ago and this weekend it blew out another spark plug. The first time it happened I was driving to town and my truck started to run rough and sounded awful. This time my son happened to be driving it and it did the same thing. We had to get it towed back home plus have someone to fix it. The garage that fixed it used a helicoil repair kit. I guess that they will do the same thing this time. I sure am disappointed in the fact that it keeps costing me money to fix. I think that Ford needs to recall the SUV.

2002 Ford Expedition spark plug blow out. What the !@#$%. . . If this is such a huge problem, why isn't anyone taking responsibility. Oh ya they want our money for a problem they are aware of. . .

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Expedition. While driving 40 mph, one of the spark plugs ejected from the engine. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 182,000.
2001 Ford Expedition 5. 4l v8 enginge spark plug blew out of head.
Ford spark plug blow out defect. It is a known defect thousands have experienced. It is where the spark shoots out of engine head stripping threads and damaging the head and sometimes causing fire. My car had this happen and now I am stranded. There are some temporary fixes but no permanent fix. The helicoil can come out. You can replace the engine but it will have the same defect. My car is a 2002 Ford Expedition 4. 6 triton v8. It is affecting 1997 through 2004. Ford is aware but says they wont fix it. I am going to try class action. This can cause fire. This is a 9 passenger vehicle used to carry my kids if it catches fire from it I may not get everyone out in time.
Spark plug was blown out of engine when vehicle was started, breaking the coil which sits on top of spark plug. Found info on internet that this is a common problem with Ford triton engines due to failure of aluminum threads in engine intake; problem presents a fire hazard should fuel be injected into cylinder and ignited when spark plug is blown out.
2006 Ford Expedition, has stopped several times while in route somewhere. Just stops at once and safe mode failure light comes on. Power steering fails, as well as engine stopping. Have had rebuilt transmission, replace the throttle, and several other things including I believe air pump. None of this cheap. But biggest concern is the safety of the vehicle. Have been very blessed that no one has been behind me when this has happened or on the highway. This is very scary and Ford needs to recall and figure out what is causing this to occur.
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Expedition which was purchased used in 2003. The spark plugs were blowing out of the head and causing the coils to break. This failure has occurred three times within 8 months. The dealer stated that the vehicle would cost over $1200 to repair at the owner's expense. There were no recalls on her vehicle nor for her particular model pertaining to the failure. The failure mileages 96,772. Updated 2/22/10 updated 07/27/jb.
I have a 2003 Ford Expedition with a 5. 4l engine. Was driving the truck when I heard a pop and the engine started to misfire. Spark plug no. 7 had been ejected breaking the coil. I have owned the truck since it was new and it has been well maintained, only 65000 miles. I have read many of the other complaints online and I'm amazed at the numbers of issues with this engine. This was obviously a bad design that spans a number of years.
Car keeps dies in traffic almost everyday and the electronic throttle control light keeps coming on . Ford wants $800 to fix. With this safety issue, I believe there should some sort of action Ford should take and fix the problem since it is always happening to this year and model so often.

Coil #1 misfire & had to be replaced. Mileage 97,000.
Plug blew out of head. Had someone look at the truck and they said that it's common for that truck to do that so I checked with another garage to see what they had to say and they told me the same thing . So why is there not a recall on this?.
The spark plug in my 2002 Ford Expedition blew out while I was driving the speed limit on the highway. After this happened, I tried unsuccessfully to get my car repaired at a non-dealer mechanic. Every mechanic I called said that they would not touch my car because of the engine and the threads being insufficient. And that most of the repairs are not lasting so the situation escalates to the point where they are losing money to fix this problem that they did not create. The dealer fixed my car and said that the fix has no warranty even though it cost me $1116. 98 to repair. I was also told that the problem is common. And that 1 in 100 of the repairs do not hold. The spark plug repair is recommended at the 100k tune-up mark. My car has had all maintenance recommended by the manufacturing including the every 3k mile oil changes. This should not have happened to my car. It was near but not over the 100k mark. And even if the spark plugs had been changed as recommended, the coil would have still blown because the problem is with the thread on the engine, not the plug itself. This item should be recalled and Ford knows that they are responsible for putting safe cars on the roads. Thank you, vicki bezio.
Driving home from work, I heard what sounded like a gun shot coming from under my hood. Come to find out it was the #3 spark plug being blown out causing damage to the coil. I took the car to the Ford garage and they gave me 3 options. 1. Heli coil it, but they will not guarantee the work and that will be $600. 2. Buy a new head, that will cost $3000. 00
3. Buy a new motor and that will cost $6000. 00
I feel that I'm getting the short end of the stick. This is a common problem with the 5. 4l trition engines and from what I gather this is a very dangerous defect. Someone needs to protect the people.

I have a 1997 Ford Expedition with a 5. 4l v-8 engine. Within the past 2 months, on 2 separate occasions, the same spark plug blew off the engine. The 2nd incident occurred on oct 22, 2008 when I started the truck in a parking lot. I needed a tow to get the truck and my family home. Now, a new spark plug can't be screwed in because the threads are stripped. I have not taken it to a mechanic but based on the numerous complaints in the consumeraffairs. Com website, it seems this problem could cost me thousands of dollars. Depending on the cost, I may not repair this since this could happen again with the other 7 spark plugs. I will not buy a Ford truck again and will advise my family and friends to get rid of theirs.

I have a 2001 Ford Expedition that blew out the #3 spark plug six months ago. The repair cost at the Ford dealership cost $450. 00 with no warranty. This morning I was driving to work and hears the loud pop and knew that a spark plug had again been ejected. I was seven miles from home so I thought I would drive it home. I drove about 20 mph on the side of the road and the gas fumes were so strong that I had to open my window. All it would have taken it a small spark in the engine compartment for my truck to have been on fire. Please investigate this before someone is seriously injured.
Spark plug blown out on my 2000 Expedition.
I have a 2000 4. 6 Ford Expedition with approx 150,000 miles on it. I drove it from los angeles to san francisco. When I arrived in san francisco I was greeted by a loud pop and an accompanying rattle and sputter. The front driver side spark plug had blown out and broke off the ignition coil. The spark plug stripped the threading of the aluminum heads. I took it to a Ford dealership in san francisco and they blamed faulty installation of the spark plug. In researching the problem I have found that many others have had this similar problem not specific to changed spark plugs. I have also learned that some class actions suits have been filed against Ford in regards to this problem but have not been successful. I am out a couple of thousand dollars and an extended stay in san francisco due to this problem that I am learning what is happening far to common regardless of the age or the make of a Ford product. I am thankful this did not occur in a desolate or dangerous area but I am extremely upset in what seem apparent to me and many others as a factory default.
