Ford Expedition owners have reported 17 problems related to gas recirculation valve (egr valve) (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Expedition based on all problems reported for the Expedition.
Vehicle lost power for 3-5 seconds at highway speeds approximately 65 mph on three separate events. Vehicle slowed down due to power loss while in heavy traffic. Three other times at idle speed in drive and in park engine stalled and immediately restarted. Loss of power steering due to engine not running when stall event happened. I performed inspection of fuel pump relay which is internal to passenger side fuse block. Found inadequate solder joint on integrated relay printed circuit and burn marks on outside of fuel pump relay. Located salvage fuse block same make and model and inspected. Same damage on salvage fuse block assembly. Replaced with aftermarket fuse block with revised solder joint and updated relay.

My 2018 Ford Expedition max 4x4 was diagnosed with the issue described in tcb-20-2315 in Aug 2019. The repair was done per the tcb and completed in oct 2019. The vehicle was in the shop for 10 weeks and I had to return it 4 times for additional repairs until the issue was temporarily resolved. The problem reoccured in Jul 2020 and it took over 5 visits to the dealership and intervention from Ford cust service to get the vehicle repaired in Dec 2020. I have already returned the vehicle again this time because the issue was not resolved and now will need to return the vehicle a third time. This will make 7 total attempts to get the vehicle fixed for the same issue. Ford refuses to replace the vehicle and denied my buyback request. This vehicle is a lemon plain and simple. I followed the procedures per state law in notifying Ford and allowing them to repair the vehicle. Clearly, the root cause of the issue has not been determined and the repair just completed is just a repeat of the first. This time, I was on vacation with my family in the mountains of west virginia in the dead of winter with windchills of minus 15 degrees. The check engine light and power train lights came on, the turbo shut down, and white smoke started billowing out of the tailpipe. We could barely maintain speed on inclines and had to stop for low oil pressure multiple times. We could have been stranded in the middle of nowhere with no cell reception. A problem I anticipated and expressed to Ford when I returned the vehicle for the sixth attempt. I want the vehicle replaced with the same vehicle that is not defective. That is all. Why is this such a challenge for Ford to solve? I have literally invested hundreds of hours attempting to navigate this nightmare. Attached is the letter I sent Ford in Sep 2020. The vehicle cannot be operated safely and is stuck in my driveway. I am now without a car.

I was drving 70 mph on highway when my car started to loose power and a wrench symbol appeared. I had no power and had to rolled to side of highway. Message said transmission temp 199 degrees. I had it towed to dealer and they are telling me it needs a new throttle body. I am retired and only drive 2 times a week to see grand children, go to store or doctors and I only have about 43,000 miles. Car has had all schrduled maintanance. I see Ford had a recall for other 2015 and 2016 models for throttle body that expired in 2017 but nothing for 2016 Expedition. This is going to cost me $450. 00.

The contact owns a 2007 Ford Expedition. While driving, the contact stated that the outside temperature gauge displayed 106 degrees. The contact stated that the passenger side floor board was extremely hot to the touch. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that there was no heat shield covering the catalytic converters. The vehicle was not repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 122,700.

The vehicle will randomly shut off at any speed, under any condition. Engine dies unexpectedly at highway speeds creating a panic to get out of the roadway. Power to steering and brakes are gone when the engine dies. Vehicle will restart after a couple minutes. The faulty part is the fuel pump relay. It is integral to the fuse box and cannot be changed without changing the entire fuse box. The fuse box is only available from a Ford dealer for $485. 20 parts only.

Idling at a metered ramp I experienced unintended acceleration while in line waiting for my turn at the metered light. The car in front of me rolled forward and I following suit. I did not touch the accelerator but merely released my foot from the brake pedal. The truck surged forward unexpectedly. I was able to apply the brakes before impacting the car in front of me. As I sternly applied the brakes the engine settled down and all systems worked as expected for the remainder of my commute. 5/23/2016 approx. 7:25 am cdt. Sunny and clear weather approx 63 degrees f. "normal" humidity. My daughter is the primary driver of this vehicle and when asked if this has happened to her the answer to my surprise was yes.

Spark plug shot from engine. Has 112500 miles on SUV. Was ice and snow on back road 30 miles from home at 14 degrees. Sounded like engine blowing up. Then load ping sound in motor and lack of power. Engine shut off on idle. Was stuck. Have not serviced yet. Ford needs to fix this issue immediately. This 5. 4 l triton should run for longer than 110,000 miles. My old Dodge would not and did not have any issue and it had 130,000 miles when it was wrecked.
After an approximate 30 minute drive, vehicle was parked with the ignition off and key removed from vehicle. While unattended, the vehicle caught fire and burned completely to the ground. The vehicle was completely destroyed and is a total loss. Witnesses reported smelling a strong electrical smell before fire was observed, and stated that flames and smoke were first observed coming from under the hood in the engine compartment. The vehicle was not parked near combustible materials such as dry grass, etc. The outside temperature was approximately 70 degrees.

I was driving on a two lane highway, fm 185. I was driving northeast while the other driver was somewhat stopped heading west, trying to turn south onto cattle drive. The other driver was stopped at an intersection awaiting to turn left. The other driver turned left in front of me as I was headed straight. The initial impact was driver's front side and then down the drivers side door. We hit, and then my vehicle did a 180 degree turn which turned my vehichle around facing my intial path of direction. My airbags did not deploy. I had curtain side airbags, driver, and passenger air bags as well. The airbags of the car causing the accident did deploy.

2003 Expedition spark plug blow-out. Yesterday evening driving home with my wife and 10 year old son, we heard a loud pop and the a compression sound. Pulled over and inspected the underside of my vehicle and saw no fluids or exhaust defects. Proceeded to pop the hood and realized the noise was coming from the engine block. It was 113 degrees outside and wasn't going to stick my hand in the engine compartment and get burned. Luckily I was not far from my house, so I limped very cautiously to my home. I proceeded to pop the hood again for a more detailed inspection and with a flashlight I could see sparks firing on the top of the engine block. Looked closer and there was a hole next to what appeared to be a long rubber tube. Grabbed my tools and removed the engine shroud to get a better look and that's when I figured it out. There was no spark plug in the hole, I thought maybe Ford has some new technology that this vehicle doesn't use spark plugs just coils of some sort. The coil housings plastic nub was broken off. O. K. That would be an easy fix, close to 8pm getting dark, so I jump into my wife care and drive the parts store up the street. Ask the manager that was there for the part and he asked if the spark plug was still in the hole fully attached. I stated that I didn't see a spark plug only a empty hole, he replied that I have a bigger issue and that I just experienced a spark plug blow-out. Apparently the model of vehicle that I have has had a serious problem with spark plug blow-outs and there hasn't been a recall. And that I would have to get it towed and repaired at my own cost. Why hasn't this problem been addressed nationally? I searched it online and there are thousands of the exact same issues with others. Do I need to be dead for someone to hear that this is a problem with the manufacturing of such components. 2003 Ford Expedition with 60k miles, 40k miles away from recommended tune-up per Ford.
I have a v8 triton 5. 4l which has blown a spark plug from the engine block. I was not putting undo stress or wear and tear on my engine when this occurred. I kept maintenance up on my vehicle so therefore this should never have been an issue. There was no accident as I was able to pull over and out of the way of traffic but this could be potentially dangerous since fuels being expelled into the engine and a spark plug blowing out of the head leaving a gaping hole where the fuel is still being expelled and there is still a spark is very dangerous. I have researched this and so many other owners of the same vehicle have had this happen to them stranding people and worse. How is a manufacturer allow a design and integrity flaw like this go unnoticed or fixed.

June 2007 while driving to mexico for family vacation, a spark plug blew out of the engine in gila bend arizona where the temperatures were close to 110 degrees. I had our dog with us so we could not go into any air conditioned buildings due to having a dog. My 8 and 10 year old boys along with my elderly mother were forced to sit outside and wait for hours until help arrived. It blew while driving on the highway. May 2015 same thing happened but this time we were heading to a family reunion camping trip and had to cancel as our vehicle would not get us there. It blew while driving on the highway. 141000 miles on the vehicle. Oct 2015, the third spark plug blew while my son was driving 25mph to school. He had to miss school that day as he had no way to get there. 187000 miles on the vehicle. This must be a defect that Ford corp will not recognize as their fault but is common that it must be! 197000 miles on the vehicle.

Ford has recognized a loss-of-power problem with its Expedition and f-150 models in the 2000-02 model years with the 5. 4 l. Engine. Simply put, in ambient temperatures over 100 degrees f, the engine computer will alter timing (in a misguided attempt to reduce engine temperature) which radically reduces engine power. Ford has a purported "fix" under its tech bulletin no. 02-12-3, dated 06/24/02, authorizing reprogramming of the computer and installation of some body plugs. Problem is that the problem remains after the tech bulletin work is performed. On my 2000 Expedition, I continue to experience power loss of roughly 30% in stop/go driving and the hot summer temperatures in the phoenix area. This poses an extreme risk in city traffic, such as when you attempt to clear an intersection or avoid an accident. I've had several close calls this summer, "post-fix", when temperatures hover around 100 degrees--I hit the gas, and barely move.
On my recent purchase of a used 1999 Ford Expedition with the 4. 6l v8 engine, with low miles only approx 31,500 when purchased, and after only adding 12,000 more miles to the vechicle, in which we haven't had the car for a full year, we experienced a blown right side head gasket that I just recently found out was a known problem with this model. The car wasn't under warrenty and the cost for repairs ran up to 1300. 00 which is outragious. I feel that if Ford has known about this defect that Ford should have recalled this defect long before so many have needed repairs. I regret that this is the last Ford I will ever own, which is directly due to the inept customer service that Ford is now known for.
In idle the engine can not hold a smooth idle at 1400 rpm. The dealer service dept. Claims it's the egr valve opening and closing. When driving, this problem does not allow the engine to run smooth and affects power at a range of 1400-1700 rpm depending on loading on the engine (I. E. Towing a trailer, driving up hill. . . ). This is occurs constantly and affects the performance of the vehicle in all driving conditions. The dealer has attempted six times to correct the problem without success. The korum Ford service manager mike powers admitted it being a defect since they weren't able to correct it. Ford has chosen not to take any action to commit to fixing it or providing a fair replacement of the vehicle. I have found one other documented case of this problem on the web.

While driving and applying brakes vehicle continued to accelerate. To gain control engine was completely shut down. Vehicle was taken to dealer, dealer will add a component to the pcv system. Please give any further details.
Speed sensitive power steering: at the time of purchase the vehicle pulled right. The vehicle also exhibited a problem I call steering burst or hang. When turning either left or right the power assist steering would continue to apply pressure to the steering wheel. This continued pressure could only be stoped by jerking hard, back in the opposite direction on the steering wheel. Another issue experienced is when accelerating hard from a stop or passing etc. The vehicle moves to the right of the lane of travel. This occurs in a surprisingly quick and unusual manner as if the vehicle where dog tracking to the right. ?. The vehicle was aligned by the dearler 4 times in the first weak of ownership. Also the frame and the tires were checked. After the forth alignment I noticed the vehicle wondering left & right on the road. Suspecting somthing fishy, I took the vehicle to an independent auto shop. The mechanic ther pointed out visually the caster and camber adjustment slots and how they were maxed out. The caster and camber had been intentionally set to 3 degrees and 6 degrees out of manufactors specifications so as to pull left. Left so as to bury the pull right problem. This steering system is either mal-engineered, mal-assembled or has defective parts. A problem which the dealer nor manufacturer can resolve or don't want to resolve it. Ford had two of thier reps look at the problem. Both times they stated the vehicle operates as per design. The last time they (Ford & dealer) had the vehicle they deactivated the speed sensitve feature which makes the problem feel less apparent but is non the less still there. The power steering is now stiffer and tighter I can only surmise to further attemp to cover -up the problem. Other Expeditions I test drove had the same problem. And on the"Ford Expedition enthusiest" web site there are many of the same complaints. The a/c failure was catastrophic the vehicle had to be towed, late at night I might add. More details please call.
