I was driving the down the street going to wal-mart on pendleton pike in indianapolis indiana the car shifted from drive to neutral on its own. I shifted it back in gear drove on to wal-mart then to went to aldis. When I came out of aldis also on pendleton pike the car wouldn't come out of park without key being in acc position foot on brake and playing with gearshit for approx 15 mins it was locked. Then the power windows also went out in the same time that this all happened. Now my car will not go into gear without messing with gearshift for several minutes and messing with ignition switch mutiple times before I can get car into motion.

2006 Ford Expedition. Consumer states vehicle will activate the engine fail safe mode and vehicle will shut down while driving
the consumer stated when the vehicle shut down, loss of power steering occurred. The consumer stated upon stopping, he discovered that turning the ignition switch to the off position and turning it back to the on position, the engine would re-start. The dealership was unable to find any problem by running a diagnostic check. The consumer stated no warning lights appeared, except when the engine fail safe mode activated. The engine safe mode warning disappeared upon starting the vehicle.

This is the fifth incident regarding this vehicle. In each case, the car was traveling at a normal rate of speed under ordinary traffic conditions. Without warning, the car either lost power and shut off suddenly or lost the ability to accelerate and slowed to a stop. In each case the dashboard message center warning "check electronic throttle control" (or something similar) appeared. In each case the driver turned the ignition switch to the off position, waited several minutes, and then started the car. The warning message no longer appeared and the car ran fine without any further immediate incident. In this particular case (incident #5), the car was traveling at approximately 25 mph south on 14th st NW in washington, DC, when the car lost the ability to accelerate, and the "check electronic throttle control" warning appeared in the dashboard message center. Due to traffic and street parking conditions, the driver was unable to move the car out of the active traffic lane, thereby temporarily blocking traffic. The driver turned off the ignition, waited approximately 3 minutes, and then started the car. The dashboard warning light was no longer illuminated, and the car was able to accelerate normally. Incidents similar to this have been reported on various websites.

This is the fourth incident regarding this vehicle. In this particular case (incident #4), the car was traveling at approximately 10 mph and was turning right into a supermarket parking lot in chevy chase, maryland. As the car pulled into the parking lot, the car lost the ability to accelerate, the "check electronic throttle control" warning appeared in the dashboard message center. Thankfully, the car had enough momentum to safely pull into a parking space without further incident. The driver turned off the ignition, waited approximately 5 minutes, and then started the car. The dashboard warning light was no longer illuminated, and the car was able to accelerate normally.
This is incident 3 of 3 with respect to this vehicle. In each case, the car was traveling at a normal rate of speed under ordinary traffic conditions. Without warning, the car either lost power and shut off suddenly or lost the ability to accelerate and slowed to a stop. In each case dashboard message center warning "check electronic throttle control" (or something similar) appeared. In each case the driver turned the ignition switch to the off position, waited several minutes, and then started the car. The warning message no longer appeared and the car ran fine without further immediate incident. In this particular case (incident #3), the car was traveling at approximately 25 mph on a two-lane (one lane in each direction) DC city street. The car lost power completely, and the driver was not able to move the car out of the lane of traffic, thereby blocking the heavy line of traffic behind her. After several minutes, the driver was able to restart the vehicle.
This is incident #2 of 3 with respect to this vehicle. In this particular case (incident #2), the car was traveling at approximately 60 mph on a four-lane (in each direction) interstate highway (the inner loop of the capital beltway in montgomery county, MD). The driver was able to move the car from the second lane from the right to the shoulder before losing all power to accelerate, although at rapidly decelerating speed, this maneuver was extremely dangerous. When the car was next taken to the dealer for service, the dealer did not report an on-board diagnostic code that would account for this incident.
This is incident #1 of 3 with respect to this vehicle. In this particular case (incident #1), the car was traveling at approximately 35 - 40 mph on a three-lane (in each direction) state highway. The driver was able to move the car from the middle lane to the right lane before losing all power to accelerate. This road has no shoulder, so the car blocked traffic in the right lane until it was restarted. When the car was next taken to the dealer for service, the dealer did not report an on-board diagnostic code that would account for this incident.
The contact owns a 1997 Ford Expedition. On July 23, 2007, the ignition switch failed to turn as the contact attempted to start the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the ignition switch cylinder needed to be replaced. She was not informed of any recalls at that time. Upon returning home, the contact realized that she had two different invoices; one stated that there was a safety recall on the vehicle and the other charged her for the recall repair. The purchase date was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 88,695.

On may 18 2005 my 2001 Ford Expedition VIN # 1fmru17w31lb14596 stopped working while at a local walmart store I had to call roadside assistance to tow my vehicle to my home being that it was about 11 pm and no shops were open I had the vehicle towed to my address and parked in the driveway the next evening while parked in the driveway undriven or started for 24 hours a neighbor ran into my home to get myself and my children out of our home screaming that our truck was on fire in the drive parked directly in front of the garage after pulling my family out we then called 911 where the local fire dept was sent out to our home to put out the fire. The fire marshall at that time told us where the hot point was and that we should contact Ford I contacted Ford immediately that morning and they denied any part of a recall for that or my other 98 Ford Expedition we then contacted sherry pullen at NHTSA to try to get asst. In this matter we also had our 98 Ford Expedition towed to the local Ford dealer after this in fear of this happening again and they replaced the switch at no charge to us and said there was a recall sent to them by Ford I faxed the work order and all info to sherry pullen and weeks later saw on the news that Ford did expand there recall to include both of my vehicles I have contacted Ford on numerous occasions with no response and have also files complaints with the bbb as well as that attorney general's office.
While placing the key inside of the ignition vehicle would turn off. But consumer could turn the ignition switch manually without the key inside. Vehicle would turn on, and the windows would roll up. Consumer took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, but mechanic could not duplicate the problem. There were times when the consumer was unable to get the key out of the ignition, and there were times when he did get the key out, the radio continued to play.
While in the driveway, the vehicle was in park and the key was out of the ignition switch. Vehicle caught on fire, under the hood. Dealer notified. Please provide further information.
Dealer said the ingnition switch sticking between start and run was the cause of many problems but the safety issue is that the vehicle suddenly lurched when at a stop. Engine raced and much pressure was required on the brake to restop vehicle. If there had been a stopped vehicle in front of me - I would have struck it.

Vehicle will start on its own, without key being in ignition. Consumer has disconnected battery. Vehicle has not been inspected by dealership.
While driving about 65-70 mph vehicle suddenly stalled, and all light on dashboard were on/off. Driving off the road had to turn off ignition switch. Then turn it back on, and it worked as normal. Taken vehicle to dealer three times.
The vehicle lost power while consumer was traveling due to a defective ignition switch. The loss of power resulted in brake and steering failures.

If the ignition switch is turned to ignition position #3 as defined in the owners manual, (p61), the gearshift lever may be moved out of park, without depressing the brake. Position #3 is supposed to shut off engine and all accessories without locking the steering wheel. The problem is that it also unlocks the brake shift interlock safty mechanism that is supposed to prevent the gearshift lever from being moved from p (park). Our 2 year old son was able to knock the gearshift lever down 1 position out of park(reverse) and the car rolled forward, down a hill and into a pond, wth him in it! the vehicle door locks automatically locked as the vehicle started to move. Luckily the passanger window opened when the vehicle went into the water (must have shorted out) we were able to rescue him before the vehicle sank (approx 1 min). When the vehicle was removed from the water, the gearshift lever was in reverse position and the ignition switch was in position #3. We are concerned that the brake shift interlock is not activated when the ignition switch is in position #3. Is there a valid reason for this, or is it an oversight in the design. I have since tested this on a 1997 Expedition and it does the same thing. Has there been any other reported problems with this? we called Ford and they said that they do not do their own safety testing and that we should contact the NHTSA. What should our next course of action be?.
Vehicle was parked in school parking lot and the vehicle just started up with no keys in the ignition. The second time this happened the vehicle was parked in a grocery store parking lot. Consumer went in, came out, and the truck was running. Key was in the consumer's pocket. This has happened at least five times. Contacted the dealer. They admitted there was a problem, but couldn't resolve it.

While vehicle was in park with ignition turned off and with driver standing outside of vehicle and reaching into ignition to take keys out vehicle began to roll backwards and slammed into the pavement, hitting a parked car before coming to a stop.
