1 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/27/2021

While in motion, the power steering quit operating. I was on a straight road near my house. No accidents but could have easily been a deadly crash if failed in a different situation. Turns out there was a recall, 14s06 on the Ford Explorer but my VIN was not included. $2700 in repairs by Ford dealer. Obviously, the scope of vehicles that fail was underestimated for this issue of steering failure. Furthermore, in reading the owners manual, it references the failure in the manual and how to reset it by cycling engine power. This obviously was understood by Ford as an issue from the beginning.

10 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2019

I show Ford has a recall #14v286000 dated 5/29/14 for steering: electric power assist system failure. My vehicle has had the steering assist fail twice while I've been driving and this recall does not show up under my VIN. I find it ironic that the same year, make, model vehicle has this recall issued, and the failure has happened to me twice, yet there is no recall for my specific VIN. I just spent $1,700 at north county Ford in vista CA to have this problem fixed, the parts alone were $1,350. I ask that the NHTSA look into this recall further and asses whether there were vehicles missed in this recall. I'd be happy to speak with someone further. I can be reached via cell phone 760. 458. 6080.

11 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2018

While traveling on the interstate my vehicle swayed into another lane involuntarly. I went into the dealership and I was initially told my alignment was due. I explained the issue and asked if it was thoroughly checked. I was told yes. I left the dealership only to have my vehicle almost flip over while turning. I went back in and after checking I am told the steering gear failed.

12 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2018

Tl- the contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that there was an abnormally loud grinding noise heard coming from the area of the steering wheel as the failure was progressing. In addition, the steering wheel had no play when turning left which had required that force be applied to the steering wheel to ensure that the steering wheel was able to be maneuvered in either a left or right direction while operating the vehicle. Sunset Ford, 11700 gravois rd, st. Louis, mo 63127, (314) 843-4431 was notified of the failure and the contact was waiting to determine if there was potentially a faulty power steering control module and was waiting for the manufacturer to determine the guidelines for the dealer which had scheduled an appointment. The contact was not included in NHTSA action number: pe12017 (steering) and NHTSA campaign number: 14v286000n however the vehicle exhibited the same failure as related to the investigation complaints and the recall campaign from the manufacturer. The vehicle was not repaired yet. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 85,000. Dyd.

13 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2018

While vehicle was in motion (parking), error power steering assist fault and service advancetrac error illuminated on the dashboard. No longer able to steer car, the car did not default into manual steering mode. The car will only go straight. The car was towed to the dealer. The dealer reported that the module in the steering gear lost communication and that the entire steering gear needs to be replaced as a result. Nhtsa issued recall id #14v286000 on some Ford Explorer vehicles for some steering gear failures, however the Ford dealer states that my vehicle was not included in that recall in their oasis system.

14 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2018

Electric power steering (epas) completely failed again. This time I drove through deep water over the roadway (16" deep). A day later a noise (like an un-lubricated roller bearing turning) could be heard every time the steering wheel was turned substantially (like when parking). After 4-days the steering system, accutrak, and steering failure messages came on the information screen while driving, but I was still able to drive without effort. I was able to drive to my destination, but when I switched off the vehicle and restarted it, the power steering was totally dead! it required superman strength to turn wheel and drive. Those are the facts. My opinion is that Ford's epas steering system is terribly designed, and dangerous! when an epas fails, it should not be monumentously harder to steer than a failed hydraulic power steering system!!! (you can drive older cars with failed hydraulic power steering forever!) I am very amazed that more people are not dead because of this defective system.

15 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2018

Electric assist steering has started to fail. This causes periodic, sudden loss of steering assist. Without assist, the steering in very difficult to manage and represents a safety issue. There is a recall, but Ford claims all problems associated with the recall were fixed a few months prior to our build date. Apparently not. Now they want 10% of the value of the car for repair.

16 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2017

Power steering assist fault! Ford has recalled some of these for this reason but refuse to accept mine in their recall . It makes it virtually impossible to steer when it fails. Luckily I was in a department store parking lot. I have a 2013 with 66,000 miles on it.

17 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2017

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. While driving unknown speeds, the steering wheel failed to move and the default steering warning indicator illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and did not assist. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 70,157.

18 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2017

Began experiencing some light binding in steering while driving highway speed. Exercised the steering back a forth a little. Advancetrac stability control was turned off by the vehicle control system and steering service warning appeared on the dash. Vehicle became difficult to steer. Vehicles from my model year were recalled for steering gear failure (14s06), but my vehicle was manufactured after the relevant date. Ford is making me pay for the repair (new steering rack) for $1520 (parts and labor).

19 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2016

Steering fails on the highway. The service power assist and service advance trac warnings come on. The vehicle looses power steering assist and it will not reset by turning the vehicle off. The blinkers will also not work when this error happens. It has already been to the dealer to be "reprogrammed" but that fix only lasted 1 1/2 days. Vehicle is now undrivable without replacing the unit, which is under recall for 1. 5 million other Ford vehicles.
